Critics have always been singularly unkind to Jimmy Buffett. Or at least they have since the singer became immune to their jabs, commanding a nation of Parrotheads who sell out his shows, snap up his records and books, and eat and drink in his nightclubs in Key West and New Orleans. By now, you've made up your mind as well: To paraphrase Buffett himself from his song "Volcano," you either lava him now, or you lava him not. Songs You Know by Heart is a friendly little best-of collection that features concert perennials such as "Margaritaville," "Fins," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," and the immutable "Why Don't We Get Drunk." If by some chance you've not yet been introduced to Buffett's music, this album is the best way to say hello. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars If you only could have one Jimmy Buffet CD this is it!.......2007-06-11

All the best songs, a must have if you don't have any Jimmy yet. And a great addition to your existing Jimmy collection, and a great spare with all the great songs for the car CD, and what would Jimmy do? You guessed it! Go for it, you will not be disappointed because there is no bad Jimmy Buffet songs.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one that hooks you.......2007-03-24

I've been listening to Jimmy for quite a few years. A friend recommended I get this album, and after that, I had to have everything else. If you've read my reviews, you know I've been rough on Jimmy's incessant string of repetitive live albums. This is the good stuff- All the songs are pulled from Jimmy's (non-Barnaby) albums up to but not including Coconut Telegraph. It skips the album Havana Daydreamin' entirely. I agree with other reviewers that the song selection leaves out a plethora of great Buffett tunes, but you'll find them eventually. This is a sampling of the artist in his prime, and if you like it, it's safe to say you'll enjoy the larger body of his work. If you don't like it, none of his other work is going to do it for you. I always thought Jimmy would come through with a greatest hits vol.2, or at least a double cd encompassing his larger body of work. That's what "Meet Me in Margaritaville" was supposed to be, but that collection just isn't coherent and definitive as Songs You Know By Heart. After becoming a hard-core fan, I have to say that this collection is really going to be the pinnacle of his compilation albums. So, if you're interested in trying out the works of Jimmy Buffett, start here. I'll bet you won't be disappointed. This stuff is solid gold. Thank you for reading my review!(note to Jimmy- why not consider putting the title track to "havana daydreamin'" on this as a bonus track for future pressings of the cd? It's a heck of a song, and it's from the era. It would fit right in.)

5 out of 5 stars Parrotheads Unite!.......2007-01-13

Truly songs we all know by heart. Great music - hard to pick a song that doesn't go well with a Corona or Margarita, and hard to pick a song since that he's done that would push one of these off the CD. The song vividly captures the spirit of Margaritaville - we are turning into the people our parents warned us about, or so we would like to believe.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect recipe for summer.......2006-10-07

Step one: buy this cd
Step two: buy new blender
Step three: buy lots of rum and fruit mixes
Step four: mix the rum and fruit
Step five: pour the mixture into a glass
Step six: put on the cd
Step seven: repeat steps three through six as often as needed

If you don't drink alcohol then you'll still enjoy this greatest hits collection. All the early hits are here and it's really all you need to know about the guy. But there is a lot more good stuff out there. Make sure you give it all a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best collection........2005-12-13

When I started listening to this CD, I was surprised that I found it devoid of the energy I associate with Jimmy Buffett. His newer material (both studio-recorded and live albums) have an enegry that is lacking in this older collection.

If you enjoy a more mellow JB form 20 years ago, or if you just like him for his radio hits, this is the album for you.

But if you're into the hard-core, serious partying, spontaneous, energetic JB, if you call yourself a Parrothead, skip this album.

I recommend _any_ of his live albums or "Meet Me in Margaritaville" instead of this one. You'll be getting more music for your money, anyway.

It's often said that this 1974 set, Ronstadt's true commercial breakthrough after a half decade's worth of minor hits, set the formula for the platinum successes to follow: some underrecognized singer/songwriter jewels, a couple of semi-obscure early rock tunes, always with something for country radio as well as Top 40 to grab hold of. But Heart Like a Wheel does it with a magic Ronstadt and her L.A. session crew would never touch again; for one thing, she was rarely again as convincingly tough ("You're No Good") or as fragile (the Anna McGarrigle-penned title track) as she is here. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Heart Like a Wheel.......2005-04-17

Rarely is a recording released that contains 10 potential hits. There is not a bad song on this CD. I remember having the LP back in the 70's when it was released. Linda Ronstadt has one of the most beautiful voices in all of music. This CD has up-tempo songs like "You're No Good" and "When Will I Be Loved" to the country classic "I Can't Help It if I'm Still in Love with You". The title track, "Heart Like a Wheel" is a beautiful ballad in Ronstadt's voice. This CD is certainly a classic for lovers of good music. It is highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Linda Ronstadt's first #1 album.......2005-03-02

YOU'RE NO GOOD,the #1 smash from this album is probably what made the album a #1 smash. There was only one other Top 20 hit,a cover of the Everly Brothers' WHEN WILL I BE LOVED. YNG came to the attention of Van Halen around 1978 and the band decided to cover the tune. The other songs are good. Linda Ronstadt's Asylum Records labelmate Andrew Gold plays guitar and sings background on YNG.

5 out of 5 stars Classsic.......2004-12-29

Even after 30 years, this sounds great. It is a true classic.
Everyone should own it.

5 out of 5 stars a journey through heartbreak.......2004-03-26

Linda Ronstadt's 1974 breakthrough hit Heart Like A Wheel represents her greatest musical accomplishment and one of country pop's definitive moments. The album opens with the visceral rock 'n roll of "You're No Good," a No. 1 pop hit. But it is the suite of ballads that follows that make Heart Like A Wheel so memorable. Never again would Ronstadt be able to capture the chillingly fragile heartbreak of the title track, the guilty love of "Dark End of the Street" or the frustration of "When Will I Be Loved?"

Ronstadt's voice is well suited for the melodic banjo lines, rolling piano notes and horns of country pop, but she also uses her higher register to good effect. When she sings the line "and my love for you is like a sinking ship," her wavering voice nearly cracks with heartbreak--a sharp contrast to "Dark End of the Street," when she intones "please don't cry / tonight we'll meet / at the dark end of the street."

Elsewhere on the album, Ronstadt's voice blends perfectly with the musical arrangements. Her cover of Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" rolls along with an insistent drum-line that echoes the song's theme of reluctantly but assuredly moving on after a tedious break-up, while the blaringly loud chorus of "Willing" is as hopeful and the lyrics are determined: "I've been warped by the wind, driven by the snow...But I'm still willin'."

Heart Like A Wheel is not a celebration of love but rather, an exploration of the anguish and power of heartbreak. Relationships here are unhealthy or hopeless ("Dark End of the Street," "Faithless Love"), breakups are overwhelmingly sad ("Heart Like A Wheel," "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You") and prospects for the future are tenuous, at best ("When Will I Be Loved," "Keep Me From Blowing Away"). And yet, Heart Like A Wheel suggests that a failed unhealthy relationship is better than a successful but harmful one ("It Doesn't Matter Anymore," "You're No Good"). The album concludes with a promise of a bright new day ("You Can Close Your Eyes"), suggesting that even when you think everything is lost, time proves to be a great healer of a broken heart.

Heart Like A Wheel is a full and complete experience--a lovely set of country-pop gems encompassing the ups and downs of a relationship. Linda Ronstadt's voice carries, unites and embodies these intense emotions with such passion that it is impossible not to be moved. Each song stands beautifully on its own, but it is the stunning cohesiveness of the album as a whole that is most impressive and memorable.

5 out of 5 stars In need of a remaster.......2003-12-03

The pinnacle of both Ronstadt's country-music phase and of her career as a whole, "Heart Like a Wheel" is one of those albums that does everything right to an almost uncanny degree. Sure, it contains some of her finest vocals, and yes, Peter Asher's production is as supple and modest as his work for James Taylor's "Sweet Baby James" was five years earlier. (After "Heart," Asher would adopt an ever-more rigid, formulaic approach to Ronstadt's releases that seemed to put her on a pedestal, or in a cage.) And it's inarguable that the material Ronstadt and Asher selected for "Heart" is uniformly strong. But there's something else at work here, something greater than the sum of the record's many impressive parts. If I knew what it was, I'd be in the music business; since I don't, I'll settle for calling it "kismet," or simply magic. This stellar album deserves better than the cut-rate, noise-ridden mastering of the original CD release that's still on the market. In the remastering era, it's as overdue for a sonic upgrade as any album in print.

Singer and guitarist extraordinaire Jorma Kaukonen was a devoted aficionado of early-20th-century rural music long before he cofounded Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and Hot Tuna some years later. On his new solo album, Kaukonen has found an imaginative setting to remind listeners how a fusion of styles and influences from both black and white musicians defined American country music in its formative decades. Included here are gems, both familiar and obscure, by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, Jimmie Davis, Cliff Carlisle, and other country musicians who were clearly inspired by their blues cousins. Backed by the Nashville All-Stars, a supersonic string band comprising bluegrass masters Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (Dobro), Béla Fleck (banjo), and Byron House (stand-up bass), all playing on vintage 1920s and '30s acoustic instruments, Kaukonen revives and vividly reinterprets these blues-drenched country classics for a new generation of listeners. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Jorma's best and most unaffected work.......2006-08-16

Jorma Kaukonen has said in interviews that this was the kind of music that got him started on guitar--that in fact, his father made a deal with him that if he learned to play 2 songs, the elder Kaukonen would buy his son a guitar. Both the songs Jorma learned were old-timey country songs (I recall one of them as being "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy"), so it would appear he has come full-circle.

And how beautifully so--this album so moved me that, by the time I got to "Free From the Chain Gang Now," I had tears in my eyes. Nothing flashy, nothing showy--just Jorma and a few of his best professional friends (including Sam Bush and Bela Fleck) having a Sunday-afternoon jam on the porch. It could be rural Tennessee, a house in the Catskills of upstate New York (where I'm now writing this from), the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio, even a suburban bungalow in Topanga Canyon, California; whatever the setting, you fully expect to look out on your porch and see Jorma and the boys out there, jamming away and inviting you to come listen and maybe even sing a few songs with them...real easy-like, friendly smiles all round.

I, for one, would happily accept that invitation. So will you.

4 out of 5 stars Flying A Different Kind of Airplane.......2004-10-16

Though the title of this CD gives a hint of what is to come, I had no idea what to expect when I bought it. When I first popped it into my CD player the music sounded so okie that I laughed aloud. This is Jorma Kaukonen? And unless you have followed all of the ins and outs of his career, you might have the same reaction.
I won't go into his musical past because if you are reading this, you are likely already familiar with him and his music. What you may not know of is his obvious fondness for bluegrass style music. If you are expecting guitar heroics, you won't find them here. If you are expecting a hard-driving rock recording, you won't find it here. But if you have any fondness in your heart for traditional American musical styles, this is a record for you! With Blue Country Heart, Jorma Kaukonen brings the listener forty-five minutes of fine toe-tappin', corn huskin', hoedown music.
My favorites here are Blue Railroad Train, Just Because (which features some magnificent banjo picking by Bela Fleck), Red River Blues, Bread Line Blues, Tom Cat Blues, Big River Blues, and Prohibition Blues. The listener will find that Kaukonen's voice is perfectly suited to this type of music and his musicians are first-rate.
I read a number of the reviews of this CD. A couple musical chauvinists complained of lack of authenticity. Do they really think that only people of a certain race can bring authenticity to the blues, that only hillbillies have bluegrass in their hearts? If they love the music of the original artist that much, they should be proud that Kaukonen is bringing that music to a new generation. If no one covered old songs, then memories of the great old songwriters would die with them and their contemporaries. I care less about authenticity than I do skill of interpretation, and on Blue Country Heart Kaukonen and company show great skill and feeling.
Yeah, I could listen to Jimmie Rodgers, with whom I am familiar, if I just had to be strictly authentic in my musical tastes. But until I heard this record, I never heard of the Delmore Brothers or some of the other writers. Now that I have, I am more likely to seek out the originals.
I think the record company missed an opportunity here to introduce Jorma Kaukonen to a new audience. With the current popularity of musicians like Allison Krause, and the attention to bluegrass generated by the popularity of the film "Wherefore Art Thou Brother?" this CD could have become a major seller. Kaukonen himself could promote the album by touring with Krause.
Jefferson Airplane/Starship/Hot Tuna fans might be surprised to find Jorma Kaukonen flying a different kind of airplane, but country music fans might find themselves wondering why they had never heard of someone as good as Kaukonen is before. They certainly would be surprised to know where he came from after hearing this.
I hope he does another like this soon. Four stars only because forty-five minutes is just not long enough.

5 out of 5 stars Finger-pickin' Good!.......2004-10-01

After hearing Hot Tuna live recently I had to check this CD out. Like Jerry Garcia, Jorma began to study and play American roots music long ago. Those who enjoy late 60's Grateful Dead (Cumberland Blues) or Jerry's work with mandolin-bluegrass master David Grisman may find similar pleasures await them here.

Some will complain about Jack Cassidy's absence, but Jorma compensates by assembling the likes of Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and Bela Fleck, modern bluegrass elites and Grisman associates. Whether this music may be blues or bluegrass, Jorma's partners have chops and authority second to none, and they break out with blazing spontaneity between verses.

Jorma's warm grainy voice is in fine form and his distinctive tone seems just right for his amusing survey of depression-era songs about railroads, rivers, critters, and the tough life in general. If you like music that sounds like a bunch of hillbilly hippies pickin' n grinnin' on the back porch, this CD is worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Something special, no pretensions.......2004-08-05

Anyone familiar with Jorma Kaukonen will know that he has been playing this type of music off and on -- mostly on -- for many many years. Here he not only gets to display his own virtuosity, but he can do so in a way that is true to the music, something that wasn't always the case when he played in rock-oriented bands. Blessedly teamed with stellar bluegrass musicians, the band comes off as sharp and confident in this first-class recording. The sound comes through clear and pure, but not "produced", all the while maintaining an aura of witnessing a bunch of friends sitting on the porch, jamming on a Sunday afternoon. This recording is the closest thing I've heard to date that captures the essence of old-time musicians and musicianship back before music became an industry and a commodity.

PS: I see a previous post that disparages this recording based on the color of the artist's skin. I'm not sure of his motive, but the inference is that this record should be dismissed based on a belief that only one race 'owns' or can 'legitimatly' play the blues. The blues may have started in the Mississippi Delta, but it borrowed freely and cross-fertilized from all popular music at the time. Whether the idea for the blues originated from specific conditions by a specific group is irrelevent -- the blues represents the blending of creative forces throughout the country. Just as the blues have evolved past its roots as field chants, it has become first an American institution, and now an international one. Any musician can tell you that where ever he goes on this planet, if the people have heard about America, they want to hear him play the blues.

Judee Sill
Judee Sill was just 35 when she died of a drug overdose in 1979, never having extended what seemed to be an unlimited potential on this, her debut record, released just eight years before. With the wits of a poet and the intonation of an angel, the post-hippie Californian laced her original compositions with astral and religious imagery--and feelings of hopelessness--and then executed them with the pop lavishness of Karen Carpenter. Sill's contemporaneous acoustic folk is sparely backed, while her multitracked vocals add to the redemptive eeriness of supernatural songs like "Lopin' Along thru the Cosmos," "The Phantom Cowboy," and "Enchanted Sky Machines." That Graham Nash produced the minor radio hit "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" (and later saw it covered by his former band the Hollies) attests that Sill was running with the right crowd. But despairing lyrics like "Guess reality is not as it seems / So I sit here hoping for truth and a ride to the other side" ("Crayon Angels") suggest that Judee Sill was conscious that her life could be brief. Thankfully, she left this behind. --Scott Holter

Heart Food
Judee Sill's follow-up to her 1971 self-titled debut sadly also turned out to be her final album, yet Heart Food stands neck and neck with its wondrous predecessor as a near-flawless slice of 1970s pop-flavored Laurel Canyon folk. The production and arrangements here are much grander then on Judee Sill, with her original piano- and guitar-driven songs enhanced by strings, church organ, harmonica, pedal steel, kettle drums, and even male vocals. But no matter the song--be it the Brian Wilson-influenced "The Vigilante," the country-flavored "There's a Rugged Road," or the piano-solo delight "When the Bridegroom Comes"--it all comes back to Sill's virginal voice, which twists and teeters in varying octaves and moods, sometimes within the same track. Sadly, her deliberate songwriting style denied her any chance at a third album. Drugs claimed Judee Sill's life just five years after Heart Food, which can serve as an alluring introduction to this brilliant artist or as a proud bookend to her more-appreciated debut. --Scott Holter

I love the music, but the copy I received (from Amazon) was missing some pages from the liner notes. I wanted to exchange it for another copy, but Amazon said no. I tried contacting Rhino, and they never did anything. How can I get the liner notes without having to buy a whole new CD?

5 out of 5 stars Essential Sill in one package.......2006-08-19

Regardless of the shoddy slipcase that totally LOOKS budget (and really, I didn't buy this set for the slipcase) - this is an essential item in any serious music collector's library. Judee Sill went overlooked in her lifetime and it really is dumbfounding as to why when listening to these CDs. She's got a plain, yet completely touching voice -- slight twang, and remarkably similar to the motherly Kate McGarrigle -- and this voice cannot lie when lyrics are sung through it. She believes what she is singing about, and I love that. Everything you've read about her arrangements and tunes are true: they are grand, understated at times, overstated never, and utterly get under your skin even after just the first play. To get her brilliant two albums in one set for a very low price is a gift. The booklet is fabulous, great photos of Judee with sensitively written liner notes and great detail into the mastering of these CDs (particularly about 'preserving' the distortion in the masters.) The material on these discs are the exact same as the two Rhino Handmade discs released a few years ago. [and believe it or not, a bit of a better mastering job!] so stop staring at those $50+ copies here on Amazon -- unless you are a true Judee Sill COLLECTOR in the sense that you need every edition pressed ever, this is what you want. You get her two timeless records, and those great great demos and that STELLAR live performance all here for next to nothing. Lovely, brilliant, about time!

5 out of 5 stars Best thing in 2006.......2006-08-08

I discovered Judee Sill in internet activities. Buying this 2-CD set was my first opportunity to hear her singing at a volume and sound quality that I can appreciate. On some Warren Zevon web page, I found words and chords for "Jesus Was a Cross Maker," a Judee Sill song that was on his `Mutineer' CD in 1995. The original version by Judee Sill that I found at MySpace.com introduced me to her abilities as a Gospel pianist, which are particularly powerful on the renditions of "Enchanted Sky Machines" that are on Disc One of this set.

"Crayon Angels" has one of the lines that gives me one of the biggest Judee Sill laughs I've had in the last month. After the false prophets caused her heavenly visions to disappear:

"the angels came back and laughed in my dreams,
I wonder what it means."

a complilation like this should have been assembled by rhino years ago. instead, rhino handmade released limited editions of sill's first and second asylum recordings as individual packages, both of which included studio "demos", and live performances as added bonus cuts.
the reissue producer gives a technical statement of how this compilation differs from all previously released versions of both albums in terms of distorted vocal levels that were/are part of the existing master tapes. for those familiar with the recordings, the distortions were part of the mixing and mastering process, and thus cannot be corrected. enough said.
the music is some of the most gorgeous, powerful, and haunting recorded material i have heard from anybody. let the music of judee sill take you away. the packaging is beautifully assembled. for those of you who could not buy the rhino handmade series, here is your chance to have most of what was issued on those limited releases.
at the price of this admission, you must pick up a copy immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Judee is magical..........2006-06-21

I bought her first album when it was released years ago. This was the age of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and so many other wonderfully talented singer-songwriters. I thought Judee would be a star right along all the rest of them. Her spaced-out spirituals were haunting and mysterious to me. Her troubled life ended her singing career after two albums, however, and she seemed to disappear. I never purchased her second record and looked for it for years in used record stores. I continued to listen to the album I had and later read about her early death. It made me sad. I was happy, however, to learn that she wasn't forgotten when I saw her two albums re-released with great additional tracks on CDs a few years ago. Now Judee's music continues to take me to far away places. She is a classic hippie-chick songwriter of the early '70s. Listen to songs like "Lopin' Along Thru the Cosmos" or "The Phoenix" and you'll get the flavor of the times. These folk spirituals are colorful and lyrical. Her voice is pure and simple.

This is exactly the kind of soundtrack you'd expect to complement a movie that takes a humorous if sentimental look at the power of love and friendship. Natalie Portman, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing, and Joan Cusack star in the film and they have musical counterparts in Beth Nielsen Chapman, Martina McBride, and teen blues star Shannon Curfman. All tracks are manicured performances high in cinematic gloss and often enveloped in swooning strings or other effects of grandeur. It's only appropriate then that a stylist as accomplished as Lyle Lovett would smooth over Ray Charles's "What'd I Say," and that eternal studio pro and road veteran John Hiatt would contribute the workmanlike R&B-influenced "Let It Slip Away." One sure surprise is Joan Osborne's collaboration with Tommy Sims for the hip-hop-R&B of "Rowdy Booty Time." Most successful is Emmylou Harris and Patty Griffin's duet of "Beyond the Blue," on which their complementary voices merge with a subdued rhythm track for one of the soundtrack's few inspired moments. --Rob O'Connor

There are a couple of good songs, but a few not so good ones. But I really love that Beat of a Heart song, so I had to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Where The Heart Is..........2006-08-01

I'm not a big fan of country, for that is what this soundtrack is mostly made of, but I actually kind of liked the country songs. They got to my heart. The music is heartwarming and just "stroll down the city streets" type of music. Some of the music is upbeat and some of it is sad. This is highly recommended if you love country, but if you hate country, this isn't for you then.

5 out of 5 stars Love the CD.......2006-06-04

I bought this CD because I had bought the movie. I loved the movie. Then I heard the CD. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. I think it is a great CD. I would recommend this CD to anyone. Every song on it is wonderful. There isn't a song that I dislike. One of my favorite songs on the CD is "Just Might Change Your Life". The whole CD is great.

4 out of 5 stars If you love the movie..........2005-01-31

...get this soundtrack. It's a really fun album. I must admit, there are a couple of songs on there that I skip past like (What'd I Say - Lyle Lovette)&(Let it Slip Away - John Hiatt). But that's just my taste. I love having the Corrs song "So Young," so much that I think I might just go buy THEIR album. And the song "Beat of the Heart" has actually grown on me and I like it more and more every time I hear it.
I'm happy to have this album. It's feel-good music and it makes me feel happy. I would definitely recommend this album to someone who loved this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD in Time.......2002-07-24

I LOVED this movie, so I was psyched to get the soundtrack, and I love it! I fell instantly in love with "Shake my Soul" and "beyond the Blue," but it did take some time for me to enjoy the whole CD. "Few and Far Between" and "Rowdy Booty Time took some getting used to, but now I can honestly say that I enjoy every single song on this CD....besides "Beat of the Heart"...I wasn't a fan of the song in the movie, and I guess I still don't like, but don't let that stop you from missing out on the rest this CD has to offer!

5 out of 5 stars Great Gig.......2007-04-04

The Commander and his Airmen were my favourite rockin' country band of the 70's and this album shows them at their very best. Since there is no definitive Commander "Best Of" album out there, (the "Too Much Fun" album is probably the best but still less than satisfactory), Cody fans should just go out and get all their early albums (i.e. those albums released prior to 1976). Start with "Lost in the Ozone", "Hot Licks, Cold Steel and Trucker's Favourites", this Armadillo live album (and its companion piece "Sleazy Roadhouse Stories" - the rest of the Armadillo concert) and then go from there. The Airmen were not just a bunch of stoned, drunk musos but instrumentalists (and songwriters) of the highest quality. Many are still making a living from music over 30 years later. They may seem rough and ready on the albums but that was the effect they sought. Listen closely and you will hear superb musicianship, arranging, singing and songwriting (including inspired selection of covers).

CCAHLPA burned hot and bright for a short time and this live album is the pinnacle of their recorded work.

5 out of 5 stars Commander Cody at His Best.......2006-06-25

These are all of the Commader Cody songs that have made him a legend. Highly recomended for any one into Rock-a-billy or Texas Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been a double live..........2005-12-08

...And it almost was a double live...the commander wanted it that way, record company said no...what do record companies know? Not much, sadly, becuase there WAS a WHOLE LOT more music from this concert at the world-famous Armadillo World Headquarters...the rest of this concert can be found on one of three albums...Sleazy Roadside Stories, Bar Room Classics, or Texas Roadhouse Favorites...the third mentioned is hard to find, apperantly a UK only release. Sleazy Roadside Stories has two tracks missing from the other two, but any of those are good if you want the rest of the concert. This is a great album, it has, arguably, the BEST version of "Riot In Cell Block #9" ever recorded...was that July 27 1973 or 1963? Hmmmm Anyway, crank this one up, crack open a lone star, and drift away to 525 and 1/2 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX...in 1973, was there a better place to see the greatest progressive country band in history?

4 out of 5 stars Good Rockin Tonight.......2005-08-19

There were a lot of groups that I enjoyed in my wilder 20's and 30's. Asleep at the Wheel was my favorite until I discovered Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. These guys could really rock and roll. Their early albums showed them finding their style and they kept getting better. Unfortunately, when they had really hit their stride, the real talent of the group went elsewhere and we were left with the Commander and a new group. He may have put the group together and his name at the front but Commander Cody was not the heart and soul of this group.

"Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas" is one of those great later albums when the group had found their sound and wasn't afraid to show it. My favorite cuts are "Sunset on the Sage", "Git It", "Diggy Liggy Lo", "Mean Woman Blues", and "Too Much Fun". They show that they can do ballads, rock and roll, and out of control rockabilly. I thing what gives them their special sound is the liberal use of the pedal steel guitar and the fiddle. It gives their sound a sort of "take off" to a higher level.

I saw Asleep at the Wheel live on several occassions (including the original cast) but I never had an opportunity to see Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. There's nothing I can do to fill the void except continue to listen to their live albums. If you can't get excited about this album, you're on too much medication.

5 out of 5 stars Superb live album of hippie-country-rock-swing.......2003-08-06

Following a third album that didn't shine as inventively as their first two, the Airmen returned with an absolutely brilliant document of all that their music meant. Recorded live at Austin, Texas' "World Armadillo Headquarters," the Airmen sound like the Buckaroos in their prime: relaxed, confident, and deadly across a wide variety of inter-related musical genres. They even cover Owens' "Crying Time," much to the crowd's delight.

The band swings effortlessly from the opening fiddle-driven instrumental into a rousing take of Elvis' "Good Rockin' Tonight." They cruise along with Johnny Horton's trucker themed "I'm Coming Home" only to plow headlong into the misery of the band's signature "Seeds and Stems (Again)." They harmonize with equal beauty for the cowboy tune, "Sunset on the Sage," and the doo-wop "Git It."

The Commander gets his boogie-woogie slot on the band-penned "Oh Momma," and his spoken-vocal leads a guitar-and-sax heavy take of Leiber & Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9. The Cajun-influenced "Diggy Liggy Lo" bursts with incredible, manic energy, and the band's "Too Much Fun" shows what a fine dance-combo they were, as does the rousing closer, "Mean Woman Blues."

This would be the last record the band would make before jumping to Warner Brothers, and it's a pitch-perfect document of all they created in their time at Paramount. All that's missing from this album is the dancer's sweat and a cold Shiner Bock -- the good times are preserved here for all to hear.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

And back in 1971, the purchasers of this debut LP (originally The King's Singers: By Appointment) found overwhelming proof in its vinyl grooves that a refreshingly new quality product was on the market. Soon the unlikely lads known as The King's Singers were all over television screens in the company of the likes of Val Doonican, Shirley Bassey, and Nana Mouskouri--also, of course, performing bucketloads of serious repertoire in concerts. For those who rushed to buy the original, this re-release is a real trip down memory lane, the excellent sound enhanced by the extra detail and color in the CD transfer (though, please note, there's less than 35 minutes of music). "Cherry Ripe," "Scarborough Fair," and Bacharach's "Wives and Lovers" are here, along with lots more, performed with that familiar mix of vocal perfection and effortless poise and complemented by the discreet contribution of the Gordon Langford Trio. --Andrew Green

4 out of 5 stars King's Singers Debut.......2007-01-12

I am a real fan of the King's Singers, and this album was very well received. I loved it. Recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Thirty years old: still terrific.......2003-02-02

We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.

The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?

It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.

Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the orignal sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.

The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and Garfunkel arrangement, whereas The Oak and the Ash and Blow Away the Morning Dew are special creations for the group by Gordon Langford.

Time Was and The Green Leaves of Summer show the group's ability to create a wonderful mood through slow, soulful singing.

Highly recommended. Timeless music.

5 out of 5 stars This is vintage King's Singers!.......2001-06-09

In the thirty or more years that the King's Singers have been going, they've released dozens of CDs. And as much as I adore some of their recent recordings, I still regard this first album as some of their best work.

This performance is both of a very high quality and is also a magnificent showcase of the variety of things the King's Singers sing. I doubt you would find many other recordings which contain works by Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Bacharach as well as traditional folksongs from the British Isles and America - especially not recordings that are of such a high standard. The vocal harmonies are just delicious, and the Gordon Langford Trio also provides a brilliant accompaniment and gives songs like The Peanut Vendor, Shenandoah and Summertime a delightful relaxed feeling. Then there is also the lighthearted and whimsical What Kind of Things - a song all about what sort of music the King's Singers sing!

I was going to give this CD four stars rather than five (mainly because I hesitate to give top marks to anything ever - I know, I'm picky), but in the end I honestly couldn't think of anything which would justify taking a star away. It's worth all five!

2 out of 5 stars Didn't care for this...........2007-06-16

First of all I am not a Mary Chapin Carpenter fan. There is only one song that I love on this CD..."Something of a Dreamer" which is the only reason I bought this CD (at a used CD place). That song is a perfect marriage between artist and song. I don't like her voice (it isn't country)and I'm not surprised that her career has fizzled....just like most artists who called themselves "country" in the late 80s and 90s.

4 out of 5 stars This CD.......2006-03-16

I probably shouldn't even be reviewing this because I don't have much of value to add, but after reading all the differing comments on the song This Shirt, I was amused and couldn't pass up the opportunity. Some say it's too "writerly", one thought the idea was kinda gross, some treat it as allegory. Instead, I totally relate to the song because of an old sweatshirt I had for many years. For me the song is literal and as another said, "poignant". That's the beauty of music though, that a writer creates something that seems to reach into our lives and speak to us in a way no one else can. Mary Chapin Carpenter is especially skilled at this, but her wide variety of topics is always going to cause hits and misses among those listening.

State of the Heart isn't my favorite MCC album, but it's solid and gets its fair share of listening as I'm rotating through my collection. Mostly, I'm glad I own This CD for This Shirt. I really miss my old sweatshirt and those parts of my life experienced while wearing it, sleeping on it, and swimming in it, but the song lets me remember.

5 out of 5 stars Women aren't the only ones..........2006-02-18

This is the MCC CD I first heard, and it for many years was the soundtrack of my life. This was the CD in my portable CD player when I took the bus to move from Muskegon, Michigan to Denver, Colorado in 1994. How Do, I never have really taken to. I always felt she wrote it at the request of her record label to make it more country radio friendly. I just never felt her heart was in it. Then there was Something of a Dreamer. Has Chapin met me? Does she know me. This IS me! This song describes me so well, I am an extremely romantic man, who knows that now at 45, I will never have a partner in my life, but I will always dream of it. Never Had it So Good is the song I would like to tell the very few lovers in my life so they would understand. It reminds me of a line from the movie The Way We Were, When Katie tells Hubble (I'm paraphrasing here) That he will never find anyone who will love him as much and be as good for him.

I read a couple of reviews that kind of say that This Shirt is more a writerly type song than a true performance. I would disagree. I think many of us look at life by possessions that we keep over the years. We open a drawer, there is that article, and it makes us realize how our lives have turned out and make us wonder about the things that might have been. Quittin' Time continues the mood in a different tempo (The slow version on the CD Party Doll and Other Favorites actually makes me cringe) that makes me understand my own failures in relationships.

The next two songs bring out different moods. Down in Mary's Land to me is just a great summer time song, cruising down to the shore. It reminds me of my years living on the Lake Michigan shore, which actually has sandy beaches very similar to ocean beaches. "Goodbye Again" is my life-that's it in a nutshell. I read another review where someone said that it reminded them of an old spinster. Well, if I was a woman, it would be me. It has been my life for 20 years. Except there is no one that calls.

I reread this review and it sounds like I am full of self pity. Nothing could be futher from the truth. I am just saying that Chapin writes universal feelings, and you do not have to be a woman to understand them. An outstanding album, and my pick for the best CD of any genre the year it was released.

4 out of 5 stars Nice listening, if a bit on the sad side.......2005-03-20

This album includes some very touching numbers:
"Something of a Dreamer" is sweet, sad, yet catchy
"This Shirt" is poignant and sentimental
"Mary's Land" is rhythmic, upbeat, and fun
"It won't bring" is sad but wise
The songs mostly describe a woman in differing situations regarding love relationships--not very unusual for popular music, let alone country music. It has a number of quite good songs but no real breakout number like "Passionate Kisses" etc. on her "Come On Come On" album. Still, it's a nice album and tends to capture emotions.

5 out of 5 stars Master Carpenter.......2005-02-12

I love "mwreview's" Spotlight Review of this album and don't think there's much I can say to improve upon it. I laughed out loud at the "Would anyone keep wearing this shirt?" line. Except that, actually, MW, there are some weirdos out there who probably would wear a shirt that their cat had given birth on if that was their all-time favorite shirt and they had washed it in Lysol.

But I do understand those critics of Carpenter who find her a little too given to "writerly" lyrics. This album has "This Shirt" and a few other moments; and of course, there's "I Am A Town" (not from this release). But unlike some of those critics, I don't call these songs "Creative Writing 101" exercises at all. The songs may be a little transparent in their conceits, but compared to most tunes out there, they're good enough to be at least grad student level.

I've only recently started seriously listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter, which is odd in a way, since I've known about her for years. I remember seeing her on Public Television and other broadcasts and being duly impressed--but somehow not really following up on her music to the extent of actually purchasing any. But I do recall, after catching her on Austin City Limits or a similar program, thinking that this was a "solid" performer. "Solid" became my buzzword re: Mary Chapin Carpenter, and so far everything I've heard seems to bear out this initial perception. The singing, the songwriting, the level of musicianship--it's all there.

To say that there is not a bad track on STATE OF THE HEART scarcely suffices. All the tracks are darn good. If I could be allowed another buzzword, I'd have to opt for "confidence." She seems completely at home with this material--a nice balance between the wry upbeat country and sensitive ballads. From the sly delivery of the opener "How Do?" to the powerfully emotive closer "It Won't Bring You," she doesn't miss a beat, literally or figuratively. She is just, well, "solid" throughout. And "confident."

I tend to prefer lyrical and impressionistic songwriters to storytellers--more Laura Nyro than Joni Mitchell. Mary Chapin Carpenter, however, is a lyrical storyteller (like Joni at her very best, actually). A song like "Goodbye Again" is thematically similar to a Nyro classic like "Lonely Women," but stylistically, it's of a different order. Not better or worse, just different. There's more than one way to tell a story of heartbreak. Mary Chapin Carpenter opts for a more narrative approach than, say, Nyro would--and in her case it works beautifully. She knows how to construct a three minute short story. That's a rare talent. And, you know, it's OK to be a little "writerly" when you know how to write.

Bob Wills meets Glenn Miller meets Esquivel's space-age bachelor-pad music as steel guitarist Jon Rauhouse blurs the distinction between hipster retro and postmodern cool. Though many of the cuts are instrumental, including a cartoon romp through "Holiday for Strings" and a revival of the theme from TV's Mannix, Rauhouse also spotlights the vocals of some luminaries he's served as a sideman. Kelly Hogan nails the Marty Robbins gunfighter ballad "Big Iron," Neko Case delivers a dreamy "East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)," and Sally Timms sounds particularly breathy and torchy on "I'll Be Seeing You." Guitar partner Tommy Connell and members of Calexico provide much of the musical backing, as Rauhouse plays Hawaiian guitar and banjo in addition to his signature steel. The 18 selections place a premium on tone and ensemble interplay rather than displays of hot licks. --Don McLeese
