Hargrove, who was a pioneer among women musicians and songwriters in Nashvile in the 70s recorded for 3 major labels and had hits with major artists until she contracted leukemia in the 80's. 4 out of 5 stars A Blast From The Past.......2004-02-20

Listening to this CD is like finding the missing link between the minstrel music and modern bluegrass. Snuffy places the banjo into the context of a lighthearted and entertaining skit for several of the songs. It takes the listener on a time warp back to the late 40's and early 50's era when country music had an all together different vibe. If you're interested in the roots of bluegrass/country music or are just tired of the over-processed, over-mixed, squeeky clean perfect digital recordings of today, you'll probably get a kick out of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Old-timey to bluegrass, the missing link.......2001-04-21

This is simply a joyous and wonderful CD. Snuffy Jenkins is widely credited with influencing Earl Scruggs' banjo style which makes him the grandfather of bluegrass banjo. And what a fun grand daddy he is! The material on this release is wonderfully varied, from blues to old-time novelty songs ("Television" is priceless) to fiddle tunes to early bluegrass. The ensemble which features the great Pappy Sherrill is awesome. Some of my favorite material is sung by Julian Medlin in a loving and gentle tribute to minstrelsy. The old time brother duet style is beautifully represented in their version of "The Sweetest Gift". I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys early country music and bluegrass.

5 out of 5 stars Folky Country Classic .......2004-12-26

If you want to hear the BEST of Kinky - get his 1st LP - Sold American - (which has just been re-released by Ace with a couple of extra tracks). After that I would completely recommend this.

The humour, irony, melody and political incorrectness of Kinky run thru it in abundance (and despite the right-ish image he trys to give off - if you listen to his words and think about it - I actually think he is a bit of lefty!)

The reviewer who gave this 1 star and said "it stinks" is quite frankly an idiot. If you are that person and you are reading this - go and buy a Celine Dion CD, it sounds like she would suit you.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it for years.......2000-07-20

I'm amazed at the previous review. I received this album as a gift several years ago along with one of Kinky's books, and I have to say I've continued to play it and enjoy it. Kinky is fun, creative, and completely irreverent and politically incorrect. Not only that, he's a good musician -- some of his renditions of Woody Guthrie's work are great! If you want to laugh -- and think -- even at the same time -- look no further.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth buying!!.......1999-04-18

This CD sucks. I ordered it for my husband's birthday after we had bought and enjoyed "Pearls in the Snow." But this CD was not worth any of the money it cost. I would send it back for a refund if I could. It Stinks!!

Perhaps due to his reclusive nature or perhaps it was his iconoclastic vision, but Mickey Newbury slipped through the cracks. His peers--figures such as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Townes Van Zandt--have often celebrated his genius, but his own artistic output, some 15 albums in 30 years, remains little known. Frisco Mabel Joy, his 1971 debut for Elektra, is his masterpiece: an ambitious, orchestrated concept album, a commanding vision of the American soul. Rather than picking and choosing from his vast output, this tribute addresses Newbury's neglect by matching a mostly younger generation of singer-songwriters and alternative-country troubadours with that great Newbury album. Interpretations from the likes of Chuck Prophet, the Walkabouts, Dave Alvin, and Bob Neuwirth alternate between acoustic intimacy and lush soundscapes. Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell contributes atmospheric instrumental interludes between songs and helps bind the distinct voices into one elegiac whole. And though the song was absent from the original Frisco Mabel Joy, Kristofferson's gruff but perceptive version of "San Francisco Mabel Joy" closes this fascinating, loving, and successful homage. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Affectionate tribute with an original-sounding approach.......2005-01-05

An ambitious and effective, delightful if somewhat dour tribute to songwriter Mickey Newbury, whose original versions of these songs had an aridity of their own... For the most part, these covers -- from the likes of Dave Alvin, Gary Heffern, Meredith Miller and Chuck Prophet, with guitar interludes by Bill Frisell -- capture the whistfulness and whimsy, as well as the utter self-importance of Newbury's work, and add something new as well... Nice record!

1 out of 5 stars ONE STAR FOR THE EFFORT.......2001-10-05

I'm so sick of these tribute albums. Now that it's back in print, get the real thing. What's the point?

4 out of 5 stars A view from across the ocean.......2001-04-13

Interesting to see such a negative perspective of this record. I wonder if perhaps it is seen in a different light from the European audience, as a magazine over here recently named it one of the Top 100 albums released in 2000. It is certainly true that the album doesn't do justice to Newbury's original work; but for one thing, nothing ever really could (the original Frisco Mabel Joy is an unparalleled classic); and secondly, it seems clear that the intent was largely to interpret the work through the eyes of the artists who took part, rather than to simply rehash Newbury's version.

Whether or not it worked is, obviously, a matter of personal taste -- but I, for one, was pretty fascinated by Midnight Choir's dark reading of "An American Trilogy" (by a Norwegian band, no less); enjoyed Dave Alvin's roadhouse take on "Mobile Blue"; thought the hootenanny-style arrangement of "How I Love Them Old Songs" captured that song's spirit perfectly; and was amazed at the instrumental touches that Bill Frisell provided for the "interludes" and segues from the original album.

One other publication I recently ran across (this one from England) stated that this album "must now be considered the template for these enterprises." I haven't heard enough tribute albums to know whether I'd agree with that or not, but it's probably the most adventurous and rewarding one I've heard so far.

    1 out of 5 stars Poor mick.......2001-02-10

I have been a fan of Mickey Newbury since 1960,this cd does no justice to Mickey newbury sad songs as willie nelson would say.I had purchased two of these cds and gave them out for christmas gifts to other newbury fans..they mailed them back to me and one advised to use it to scare the cats away the other one had no comment...again, a poor rendition of the Great Newbury Frisco Mabel Joy...

The first album in Arhoolie's superb Tex-Mex series, this traces the roots of the modern norteño-Tejano-conjunto sound. We hear the early accordion players and duet singers, then see them come together in the 1930s and '40s, forming the heart of the style as it has existed ever since. All the key names are here, from the blind fiddler El Ciego Melquiades to the magnificent Texan diva Lydia Mendoza, accordion pioneers Santiago Jiménez and Narciso Martinez, and the trend-setting Alegres de Teran. A 36-page booklet puts the music in context and makes this an essential purchase for anyone interested in border music. --Elijah Wald

5 out of 5 stars A Poet For The Ages.......2006-01-12

In the history of American reverence toward Nature, Bob Nolan's place is right up with Thoreau, Aldo Leopold and John Muir. Nolan was prime songwriter, and spiritual/musical center, of the Sons of the Pioneers from 1936, when Roy Rogers left, to 1949, when Nolan "retired." He rode the "cowboy" wave, but his best lyrics transcend any genre. Without a word wasted, his moving song-poems about wandering loneliness, and finding God in desert and stars, convey an authentic manliness that his resonant voice made hugely popular in those days before faith became so political, and before "Western" meant the violence of Clint Eastwood. Nolan's memory deserves a much better fate.

That voice still haunts on this unique recording, made a year before his death. The real treats are two of his best post-retirement songs (the only Nolan recordings): "He Walks with the Wild and the Lonely" and "We'll Go A-Wandering" - plus Nolan's moving version of Marty Robbins' "Man Walks Among Us."

There's a line from the Nolan song "The Mystery Of His Way" which could easily apply to his own body of work: "And He will find a way/ To speak with you some day."

    5 out of 5 stars A "true" Pioneer.......2003-11-22

If you are one of those, who are captivated by the the very special sound of the Sons of the Pioneers, you will absolutely love this cd. As far as I know it is the only recording Bob Nolan did on his own. His voice is probably the most recognizable of all the "Sons", besides Roy Rogers.
All the selections and arrangements on this cd are most "special".

Richards is probably best known as a latter-day member of The Sons of the Pioneers. Having joined the group in 1963, his tenor quickly became an integral part of the Pioneers' legendary harmony singing. But a few years before, in 1959, Richards cut this solo debut for Jimmy Wakely's Shasta label, reproduced here with a handful of bonus tracks.

The album's original title, "Folk Songs," spells out the song content. Recorded amid the folk-revival and story-song boom of the late-50s and early-60s, Richards sang traditional songs of British ("The Roving Gambler") and Scottish ("The Riddle Song") ancestry, as well as banjo-driven tunes like "Middle Hand Road" and soon-to-be folk-classics like "Sylvie" and country standards like "The Convict and the Rose." Bonus tracks on this reissue include surprisingly rockin' takes of Dallas Frazier's "Don't Let Me Down" and W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues."

Richards has a blue-edge to his fine tenor (bringing to mind one of the 50s first folk-revivalists, Bob Gibson, among others), and was accompanied on this outing by some of Los Angeles' best studio-hands. The guitarists include Neil Levang (who waxed studio dates with Duane Eddy, Dean Martin and Elvis, and found great success with Lawrence Welk), Roy Lanham (who played with the Burnettes, Johnny Horton and The Browns, and who joined the Sons of the Pioneers in 1961), and ace flat-picker and banjoist Joe Maphis. Legendary steel player Noel Boggs added his twang, and Richards showed himself to be no slouch as a player, flat-picking his acoustic for "China Nights."

Those who came to know Richards through his work with The Sons of the Pioneers will enjoy this peek at his earlier work, and fans of folk-revivalists like the Kingston Trio, Burl Ives and Chad Mitchell will certainly cotton to this rare gem.

    Album Description

Hell's 1/2 Acre, a four member band from Louisville, Ky., has released a second LP. Under a Whiskey Moon, produced by long-time John Mellencamp producer and band member, Mike Wanchic.

Under a Whiskey Moon is clearly the mark of a band that has come into its own. The band's influences of bar room alt-country and cowpunk have not been forgotten, but now are mellowed by a rough yet melodic sound, at times more rock, others more pop. Band songwriters bassist Rankin Mapother and front man John Woosley found their new inspiration for the album while digging deep into their roots.

Undertones of the Band and Rod Stewart-era Faces woven together with a rootsy sound create big tracks with incisive edges. From the twangy opening cut, "Silver Dollar," to the moving acoustic "One Lonely Night," and the jangle of "Kindness of Strangers" and catchy thump of "Hold," Under a Whiskey Moon covers a lot of ground with genuine emotion and ample musical chops.

The album's new direction came after two years of regional touring success and strong internet album sales or their 2003 release "Blacktops & Blackouts.

The new album features contributions from noted artists such as guitarist Andy York (Jason & the Scorchers/Mellencamp), keyboard player Moe Z MD (Wallflowers/Tupac Shakur) and Louisville indie stalwart Peter Searcy (Squirrel Bait/Big Wheel) on cello.

Take four parts Louisville twang, one part big-time producer, mix liberally with serious musical chops, fun songwriting, and serve hot. What you get is Hells 1/2 Acre's new CD, Under A Whiskey Moon. Ranging from the Beatles influenced "Sun Comes Up" to the irony of "Kindness of Strangers" to straight-up existential twang on songs like "Big Black Car," Hells 1/2 Acre shows a breadth and depth in their songwriting that really shines. They clearly have a single in "Silver Dollar" and maybe a few more past that. The production work of Mike Wanchic, who has played with and produced for Mellencamp, is really wonderful. Wanchic could be the fairy godmother who turns Hells 1/2 Acre from a fun, talented regional touring act into a group we get to hear on our car stereos. If for nothing else, this CD is wonderful for the ironic and perky death-row song "Kindness of Strangers" about a bad man who can't see that he's bad, and "One Lonely Night" where the protagonist tries to win his love by comparing her to Eva Braun and a hooker in an alleyway. If country radio had any cojones or sense of humor, they'd play this CD. Get the CD, enjoy it as much as I have, and help stick it to The Man.

    5 out of 5 stars Hell's 1/2 Acre "Under a whiskey Moon".......2004-03-28

"Insurgent cowpunks Hell's Half Acre reconvene their clever variety of influences for this evolved follow up to 2003's Blacktops & Blackouts. Taking off from the band's rockabilly roots down gravelly roads, skimming tear-stained bar tops and breaking bottles Under A Whiskey Moon, these tunes have a more rough-hewn, melodic jangle-pop sound overall. Passionate vocalist John Woosley handles everything from smooth, engaging twang-pop to bluesy swagger. The raspy warmth and tongue twister lyrics of "Kindness Of Strangers" conjure an alt country Elvis Costello, while Woosley's breathy honesty color the glittering acoustic groove of "One Lonely Night". The band's nimble, driving twang-pop progressions have at once an urgency and an ease, brought out by Mike Wanchic's production (longtime producer for John Mellencamp)" -- Miles of Music.

5 out of 5 stars A deep and wide approach to American music........2004-03-28

On the follow-up to their 2003 debut Blacktops & Blackouts, Louisville's Hell's Half Acre have undergone a kind of musical transformation. While their first outing was a boisterous, drunkabilly, cowpunk vision of excess, Under a Whiskey Moon offers a deeper, wider approach to American music. The songs by frontman John Woosley and bassist Rankin Mapother here reflect a wider, varied palette. One can hear the Faces, and the early-1970's era Rolling Stones in their countrified roots rock. That's not to say that Hell's Half Acre have given up writing about getting drunk, getting high, or raising hell; they just do it differently. With John Mellencamp's guitarist Mike Wanchic at the production helm - and the album being cut in Bloomington, IN rather than Louisville, KY, the sensibilities are striking, more urgent, wonderfully melodic, less frivolous, but no less raw and rockin' an attack. There are guests in the mix as well, such as Andy York from Jason & the Scorchers and Tupac session keyboard player Moe Z.M.D., and cellist Peter Searcy. In case you are raising your eyebrows about this last cat, he's the most punk of all, having done time with everyone from Squirrel Bait to Big Wheel. Standout tracks include "Doctor Please," "Silver Dollar," "One Lonely Night," "Big Black Car," and "Lonesome River." A very solid sophomore effort. - Thom Jurek/All Music Guide

    Album Description

Peppered with MRK's signature style which teeters precariously between alt-rock's pioneer days and a wide swath of vintage jams, The Devil's Dutchman also delves deeper into sounds only hinted at in their previous release No Band in the Happy Place; gospel, retro-country, Vaudeville and Delta Blues. From the strawhat shuffle of "Hittin' on The Queen" to the tent-revival finale of "Shackle and Chain" to the 60's surf-vibe of "ATF", the developing maturity and diversity of the band is clearly evident. The lyrics revisit time-tested classics; love, loss, road-weary artistic anguish, addiction, and canine attacks, while dredging up fresh buckets from MRK's bottomless well of emotional and cleverly-delivered themes.

"Dutchman" was recorded with a mix of reckless abandon and meticulous craftsmanship. Basic tracks were recorded at The Trench by Gregg Williams whose album credits include The Dandy Warhol's 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia among others. MRK sought out local Seattle producer and friend Jon Goff to put the finishing touches on their third release. The results are a record that is as well-polished and pleasing to the ear as No Band… but more reflective of the aggressive style and diverse musical palette that MRK has developed over the years. This CD is certain to please the tired-and-true and push the fence-riders onto the lush green grass know as "The Devil's Dutchman"…

5 out of 5 stars Devil's Dutchman rocks my socks off!!.......2004-05-19

The album The Devil's Dutchman is the third disc by The Memphis Radio Kings. It employs a number of unique stylistic efforts that reflect the band's roots sound. You can hear the album open and closes as if it were being played on a phonograph, classic!! 25 will get you 10 opens musically as if hearing the sounds of an on-coming train, Tony's drums and Tim's harp serving to provide the effect. Tony drives those drums home and Tim pushes the sound with his soulful harp playing. Charlie Beck's lyrical delivery is reflective of the human desire to leave a legacy on this train destine for a reckless end.

Another masterful track on this record is "shackle and chain", an old south themed track as the lyrics reflect the desire and search for independence. The chorus bridges into a soul, gospel influenced harmony in the Blues tradition. Some skillful "picking" by Mr. Jones breaks the band into a free spirited jam before the final chorus.

I think the bands focus on harmony this record is apparent particularly on lucky one. I'm only an aspiring musician who grew up around this sort of music, but what I like about this bands harmony is that the inspired work of Charlie Beck, is complimented by divergent vocal harmonies provided by Tim Jones and Tony Leamer. They each bring their own qualities to the harmony and I think they do it with intent. "Venture to guess", harkens back to the bands post-punk/ indie-pop works with the intense delivery of Charlie's vocals. The riffs are faster and more intense than other numbers on the record.

Ah, yes!!, what I believe to be the highlight tracks on the record. Dixieland, I wrote these guys and said how much this song reminded me of the honky tonk sound. Listen to the twang of Tim's vocal back-up to understand what I mean. Then when I saw their show in Portland, Oregon recently, it just kept me enthralled. The lyrics are so Old West/ Honky Tonk I wondered where my boots and duster were. The storyteller tradition is alive and well here. The sound is so intense that like Waylon, Hank jr., Johnny, George and the other outlaws I wonder who pissed the MRK off.

Hittin' on the queen, it's a worldly adventure of faithful travels. Tim sports his talent for the Kazoo here. Talk about stylistic effort. The harmony here reminds me of a barbershop quartet, sorry guys. You know I love it though, that is just how seamlessly the harmony was put together. Nice work!! Lastly, with Double line, post punk rears its head again with a ting of Johnny Cash, check that chorus to see what I mean.

These are just my favorites but undoubtedly, to use a clich? "like fine whine they just keep getting better". I was talking to them last week and urging them to do a live record because their live work is so awesome. They mentioned something about a live holiday record, he he. I CAN'T WAIT!!

    4 out of 5 stars Wow, what a progression!.......2004-03-21

This is the third record by this unique and (so far) relatively uknown band outside of Seattle. Have seen this band live several times and this is the first of their records that captures the energy and urgency of their live show. Plus, they are more experiemental on this one, adding bass, lots of keys, harp, even a kazoo. Not to mention the cool drum effects on Dixieland (which kills live) or the big vocal/keyboard break on Lucky One. I'm saving the 5 star review for their next one - if this band keeps developing like this, they'll definitely deserve it.
