4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass harmonies meet honky-tonk twang.......2002-10-17

Named after a moonshiner from the original Andy Griffith Show, the band members originally hail from North Carolina, though they're now mostly relocated to Nashville. Their sound weds bluegrass harmonies and picking to country and honky-tonk sting, and though they liken themselves to Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and the Grateful Dead, a better touchstone might be The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Throughout this CD, the band shows a reverence for their sources, with superb twang and harmonies, but without any sort of slavish retro-devotion; they're equally at home with their country roots and non-country influences. A cover of the Beatles "I've Just Seen a Face," for example, provides an opportunity to bring the song's melody to a light shuffle beat, backed by mandolin and reverb-heavy baritone guitar. It's that sort of synthesis that often marks the band's approach.

But even with the variety of flavors brought to each song, there is a definite lean charted by the writers. "Savin' Up For a Cadillac" wears its Bakersfield twang proudly, while "Six Days From Sunday" and "If It Ain't Love" feature tightly-packed hill-harmonies, and "Ragin' River" takes a country-swing turn. "I Know You Rider," long a regular of the Grateful Dead's set list, is rendered here as in a wonderful folk style (no whirling dervish dancing, no 15-minute extended jam).

Though this debut is low-key -- it's not filled with the hot-picking of a bluegrass band, or the twin-telecaster sting of Bakersfield -- it harbors significant charms in its smooth mix of styles and lovingly recorded sound. Perhaps the only real disappointment is that the band didn't take a stab at the Andy Griffith Show theme ("The Fishin' Hole"), as co-written by Everett Sloan -- the actor who portrayed Jubal Foster. Here's looking forward to their sophomore release!

5 out of 5 stars These boys are going to be big!.......2002-08-22

I've listened to this cd countless times and never seem to grow tired of it. The songs range from soulful to knee-slappin'...not to mention the great band name (any Andy Griffith fans out there?).

One of my personal favorites is "Six Days From Sunday." It's an original tune that is really catchy. I find myself humming it throughout the day. They do a great job of covering the Lennon/McCartney song "I've Just Seen a Face". The entire cd is a good mix of cover tunes and original compositions.

I actually saw them live before I heard the cd and nothing is lost in the transition. I recommend playing this cd on your way to work to start your day out on the right foot!
