      5 out of 5 stars Among most overlooked of the 90s.......2004-08-16

      Gravelly vocals, a hard rock style that's hard to classify, maybe channeling a little garage, a little southern rock; intelligent lyrics elevating above the mundane.

      Favorite song is "Southern Bells", showing them at their best. Great riff.

      I first saw Mother in concert in Urbana, IL, in 1994. They've remained among my favorite bands since that time, filling a niche that has been unchallenged by others. Coming out of a music scene that saw groups like Poster Children and Hum reach some degree of commercial success, Mother seemed poised to join them. After changing their name to Menthol (Mother was already taken I think) and signing to Capitol, they're major label debut met with little fanfare, in my mind attributable to completely absent label support. That album demonstrated a maturation of their sound and certainly deserved more air play than most of the other pap on the radio at the time.

      Particularly in the midst of the recent "Garage Rock Revival", this album still feels fresh. Since I'm not much of a rock critic and don't feel comfortable drawing any comparisons, I'll offer this: I keep them in the same rotation as two of my other favorites, Led Zeppelin and the White Stripes.
