There is no one else like the Doo-Wah Riders. For over 20 years they have been riding their own patch of the musical range throughout the west. They possess the rare combination of many years of experience and youthful energy, fired by a love for what they do. The Doo-Wahs are country, with a unique, original sound. They define their style as "high energy country with a cajun twist". Their tight musicianship and powerful arrangements have made them favorites everywhere they go.

Product Description
This is the most recent release of the Doo-Wah Riders and their best album to date. Once again, produced by Gary Morse, this cd combines all the Doo-Wah's best qualities: Great Harmonies, High Energy Country with a "Cajun Twist", and Great New Original Material. The Doo-Wahs wrote nine out of the ten songs. We highly recommend this cd!

Technofied, groove-intensive Asian crossover sounds for the '00s, Big Drum: Small World showcases the dynamic Dhol Foundation weaving its Punjabi drum magic within a cavalcade of beats, keyboards, flutes, vocals, and strings both acoustic and synthetic. The group is lead by Johnny Kalsi, who is currently a principal drummer in Afro Celt Sound System, and who has also played with Transglobal Underground, Asian Dub Foundation, and Talvin Singh. This CD by no means attempts to be a purist effort, or, conversely, to jump on a bandwagon of sampling Indian instruments and then regurgitating them in digital dance form. The results are somewhere in the middle, with the group's live playing interacting with programmed elements. As electro-organic bhangra-style dance, this music can be intense. Some repetitive sections scream out for greater motion, while others are balanced nicely between the organic and the electronic. A couple of tracks even offer gritty bursts of electric guitar. On the whole, the recorded output by Dhol Foundation is pretty good, although their live performances are probably more smoking. The album includes notable guest appearances by like-minded world crossover artists: British-based Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas appears on "Shin the Mechanic" and "Tere Bina," while "Iridian" sounds like uncredited samples of Afro Celt Sound System. --Bryan Reesman

5 out of 5 stars big drum indeed.......2005-03-17

Whoever these guys are, they certainly can rock the house (or the car, or the beach).
I came across this CD by accident, sampling at a local music store and had to buy it.
The drumming is amazing! Reminds me of the Varanasi drummers of India. Fits seemlessly with Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale. Too bad they don't get more local air play.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! .......2004-11-20

This is a great CD. There are some funky mixes. My favorite ones are the smooth ones which are not too fast.

I love the mix of eastern rythyms and styles with the west...and the upbeat music.

Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars The Transcendental Beat of a Drum...........2003-07-11

No matter where on earth you come from, this instrument (the dhol) will make you want to move every inch of your body. The people of the northern Indian state of Punjab have long enjoyed its mezmerising and entrancing rhythms, but now, thanks to the hard work of Johnny Khalsi and The Dhol Foundation, more people across the globe have a chance to experience the extremely powerful effect of this instrument. The dhol drum forms the backbone of Bhangra music and is one of the key reasons for the genre's success on the dancefloors of the UK, Canada and the US. This album celebrates the instrument by staying true to its vibrant and robust energy but also demonstrates its versatility, by incorporating transient and "New Age" sounds.

5 out of 5 stars All Hail the Drum Master.......2003-04-04

Bottom Line: A solid solo debut from a consumate musician. An excellent introduction to bhangra fusion music and the dohl drum.

Johnny Kalsi is one of the giants of the Asian Underground scene in London. His impressive resume includes stints with Alaap, Transglobal Underground, and Afro Celt Sound System. Kalsi is in great demand because he is the master of the dhol, a two-headed wooden drum from north India. The dhol produces a distinctive sound that lends readily to intricate fast-paced rhythms. Kalsi teaches the dhol and other drums at a studio in London and many of his pupils now play with him.

Kalsi is now the front man for the band Dhol Foundation (also the name of his school) and in early 2001 released a single with Natacha Atlas. "Shin the Mechanic" was a big hit world wide and left fans of world fusion eagerly awaiting Dhol Foundation's full-length release. Big Drum : Small World was worth the wait.

The first song, "Eik Din" opens with a bird singing; appropriate for the organic nature of this music. A human singer joins the bird and is in turned joined by a bell, cello and frame drum. The pastoral feel bursts into electronics and dhol, with the beat kicking in at an outrageous 180 bpm. Despite the pace, the melody and rhythm are controlled and uplifting, not frenzied.

"Iridian" sounds very much like an Afro Celt Sound System song, light and happy with the distinctive flute melody and violin solos while Kalsi's dhol sets a bhangra rhythm. The song takes an abrupt detour to a jazz piano solo (not my thing but others would enjoy) for a few seconds then returns to the main melody.

"Healing With Tumeric" turns up the energy with a bhangra dance number. It features sitar and flute-sounding keyboards, electronic atmospherics, and multiple dhol players. The dhols set the tone here, when they are playing, the track is hard driving dance, when they aren't, the track is atmospheric, almost ambient. That may sound weird but the interludes and changes work very well.

Next, Near Eastern chanteuse Natacha Atlas graces us with "Shin the Mechanic." The song is classic Natacha with Kalsi ably accompanying on dhol. By classic Natacha I mean a catchy song with a pop feel, beautiful singing, and foot-tapping rhythm.

The down-tempo "Poseidon" is perfect lounge music featuring light keyboards and superbly understated table and dhol. Turning to Indian classical music, "Seven Heaven" features santoor and hammered dulcimer in a very pleasantly relaxing tune.

The DCS in "TDF Meets DCS" is Shin DCS (You guessed it, he's also the Shin in Shin the Mechanic). Shin sings on this song which has an urban groove with gang vocals, electric guitar and mass drumming. He has a great voice, articulation, and range. I searched all of the liner notes, press releases and the band's Web site but couldn't find any info on who Shin is or where else we might find his work. That's a shame.

Natacha Atlas and Shin DCS return for the sweeping ballad "Tere Bina." A beautiful romantic duet in the Indian tradition, it shows off the vocal talents of both, accompanied by strings, keyboards, tabla and dhol. Very nice song.

The title track and "Drummer's Reel" are bhangra drum jams that will satisfy the primal cravings of any drum fanatic. "Big Drum Small World" is what American drum-and-bass should sound like. "Drummer's Reel" features a massive array of 42 drummers (all students of Kalsi) providing the beat for an Irish reel. In between "Big Drum Small World" and "Drummer's Reel" lies "Colours of Punjab," a light-heartedly melody with intricate percussion. Pleasant and pastoral.

Fans of drums should definitely get Big Drum Small World, as should fans of Indian music.

5 out of 5 stars Big Drum, Big Winner.......2002-02-28

I've been listening to "Big Drum: Small World" (great title) for months, in fact, it seems to have earned a permanent place in my CD changer. My tastes are pretty eclectic (for example this week I'm listening to Bela Fleck/Flecktones, Nitin Sawhney, Pierce Turner and Outkast), and I tend to bore easily, so this is quite some achievement. The dhol drum was new to me before seeing the Afro Celts, and I understand Johnny Kalsi is the best. This is very easy to believe. (The drum itself is extremely loud, and in the wrong hands... I shudder to think. Luckily there's no need to worry here.) Kalsi's dhol is the backbone, holding down the groove with great engaging rhythms, and only really taking center stage on "Drummer's Reel". At first listen these rhythms just captivated me.

"Big Drum" builds from the quiet dawn of "Eik Din" to the thunderous "Drummers Reel", featuring an ensemble of dozens of dhol drummers and Nigel Eaton's hurdy gurdy. "Iridian" is exquisite. The dervish-like "Healing with Turmeric" segues into the wild fusion of "Shin the Mechanic", with guest vocalists Shin and Natacha Atlas. Other standouts are the bhangrafied "TDF Meet DCS" and the title track. That said, there's not a dud on this CD. The production values are excellent, and the acoustic and electronic elements are very well balanced. Yes, the overall style is hard to categorize, as some of the reviewers below have alluded to, but don't let that scare you, "Big Drum" is both cohesive and very accessible. Everyone I've played it for finds something great about it, and it hangs together as a complete work, it's certainly not a hodgepodge. "Big Drum: Small World" was been a breath of fresh air in my CD collection. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars U2 Fan? Then you want this ...........2005-10-29

U2.com had this version of If You Wear That Velvet Dress on their website, in Quicktime format, for only a short while.

Well, the song is lyrically very nice, but the version on the Pop album wasn't that swift, and the POP Live in Mexico version is only somewhat better.

Holy cow ... the version of If You Wear That Velvet Dress on the website was fantastic - just beautiful. However, I couldn't find it anywhere.

Well I'm searching and here it is!

If you like U2, then for this song, the CD is worth the price of entry.

I play the song for my fiance and she just loves it, but it was an Apple Quicktime and I could not get it onto a CD. Well, now I have the CD coming.

    Just beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Another fine mess you've gotten me into..........2003-08-04

A terrific follow up to Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues, More Friends boasts an impressive array of guest singers from Bryan Ferry to Chrissie Hynde. All the usual suspects are back of course; Sam Brown does a nice turn dueting with Sam Moore on Together We Are Strong. Bono's remake of the U2 track If You Wear That Velvet Dress is actually sharper and superior to the band's version of that track. Holland and his band bring a sophistication to the tune that was totally lacking before.

Holland's collaboration with Robert Plant is a wonder; Plant hasn't sounded this invigorated in years. The same could be said for the MIA Ray Davies. He hasn't recorded an solo album or with his band The Kinks in years. His performances seem to have taken over his life at the moment so it's nice and refreshing to hear him again particularly on such a great tune as Yours Truly, Confused. Badly Drawn Boy makes an appearence on a self penned tune which fits in neatly with Holland's style (not a surprise given Holland's past membership in Squeeze). Holland also continues working with a roster of talented he admires but that has been overlooked by mainstream radio including Jimmy Cliff, Tom Jones, Marianne Faithful (performing Dylan's You Gotta Serve Somebody), George Benson (!), Dionne Warwick, Edwin Starr and more popular contemporary talents such as Stereophonics, Huey (from Fun Lovin' Criminals), the ever popular Robert Plant and the obscure but great Blind Boys of Alabama.

It's clear on all the tracks that this was a labor of love for Holland and that the performers got caught up in the spirit of the recordings. If you're concerned that Holland has forgotten any of the major talents of the 60's and 70's, Jeff Beck drops in for a searing performance of Drown in My Own Tears. There are a couple of omissions--I'm surprised not to hear Holland work with Glenn Tilbrook, Elvis Costello or Paul McCartney on this follow up. I also think that Tom Petty, Roger McGuinn and Peter Green would make interesting collaborators for future installments (should there be any).

While More Friends won't benefited from any high profile deaths a la George Harrison and Joe Strummer from the last CD, perhaps it'll win sales and airplay on merit alone; it's every bit the equal of the previous album although it lacks the extra guest star power that a former Beatle and member of The Clash brought to Big Band. More Friends is a step forward and back; the collaborations and performers gathered on this collection are more diverse and, arguably, some of the songs are better as well. Again, there isn't anything that quite matches the stand out track on the last album (Harrison's searing Horse to the Water)but the overall quality is higher. The step back? Well, it doesn't have anything that jumps out at you as being radio ready (meaning crap I suppose)material. Kudos to Rhino for putting this out and to Jools for continuing to do the music and stuff he loves best.

5 out of 5 stars How Great are Alex Chilton & Big Star?.......2006-11-01

Big Star is SO GOOD that this All-Star list of performers and bands do very little to the songs of Chilton and Big Star!

Usually when tribute albums are conceived and artists assembled the goal is to have said artists cover songs of the honored in THEIR STYLE. But the influence of Chilton, Stevens, Hummel and Bell is just too large, too profound on ANYONE who has crossed their path.

It would be like Joshua Bell throwing out Tchikovsky's Violin Concerto score and rewriting the piece "in the style...of Josh" Or Cliburn playing something of his own writing influenced by Beethoven and calling it "Fur Elise."

Sweet, Hatfield, the boys of Wilco, shoot, EVERYONE on this tribute album HONOR Big Star by doing VERY LITTLE to the music of the honorees.

Some might argue, "What is the point of covering a song and NOT trying to make it their own." I myself argue that if a song is good enough to be covered then it will stand up to being RIPPED APART and put back together again by another artist. Why even today I ran across a cover of John Lennon's "Cry Baby Cry" by Bardo Pond. If you know Bardo Pond just imagine what a different sound the song had. But that's ok.

Now it may seem like I'm making an argument AGAINST this disc, but honestly, I'm not. This disc is much more like Todd Rundgren's "Faithful" record. On it Rundgren covered a number of his major influences like The Beatles, Dylan and others. He played all the instruments and created spot on versions of the originals. All in an attempt to show how these past performers shaped HIS sound.

I think this collection of artists are doing the same. I'm sure they all think, "You can't F#2K with PERFECTION!" They don't and have created one WONDERFUL tribute album. Big Star fans, fans of Power Pop, anyone who loves intellegent rock and roll should consider getting this record!

With some brilliant songs by guest musicians George Harrison, Sam Brown, Stereophonics, Eric Bibb, Chris Difford, Mick Hucknall, Taj Mahal and Eric Clapton. As it says in the sleeve notes: 'For optimum results play as loudly as possible in comfortable environments.'
Just don't annoy the guests and neighbours.

    5 out of 5 stars A Superior Album.......2002-02-08

This is a wonderful mix of Rhythm & Blues songs by top artists and musicians, with a couple of odd (but good ones) thrown in. George Harrison's "Horse To The Water" is a great one and a wonderful final song for him (recorded aprox. two months before his death). The John Lennon and Bob Dylan influence is obvious, but it is definitely George's! Eric Clapton is also great with "What Would I Do Without You." The piano and guitar work on the album stands out as superior! I would recommend this CD to anyone with an appreciation for good, solid Rhythm & Blues music! Get it while it lasts & sit back and listen!

OK, this is an odd mix! but some of the tracks are great! It has everything from the blues to Ska! However, the track which will gain most attention is George Harrison's. Harrison's voice sounds in faltering shape! The Eric Clapton is a good track, and there are many gems in this album!

3 out of 5 stars One great George Harrison songs and 21 other tracks to skip.......2002-01-12

This is an interesting last statement for Harrison--he's a bit angry and rocking. The song basically sounds like a Cloud Nine-era Harrison track (a great one), but the rest of the disc does nothing for me. A bunch of swing [junk]. Even some of my favorite artists (Joe Strummer, Van Morrison) are not at their best here.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

5 out of 5 stars Another great production!.......2004-01-18

I just got this CD. I ordered it last week and waited anxiously for it to arrive. I loved the other two friends albums. This one is on the same level as the previous efforts--it's a lot of fun! I especially love the Solomon Burke/Eric Clapton numbers (there's two); Smokey Robinson, Ringo Starr, and Michael McDonald (with Candy Dulfer), but every track is a pleasure to listen to. I wish I could see the TV show that inspires these tracks. My town is too small to get BBC programming, unfortunately. Please Amazon USA carry more of Jools work. I just ordered a number of CDs from the U.K. site. Why aren't they available in the U.S.?

        From Amazon.co.uk

In More Friends Jools Holland (and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra) return with a growing motley crew of musicians that have appeared on his eclectic music show Later With Jools Holland. Again, the focus is on what Holland calls "big band blues"--there's a rock & roll big-band extravaganza with Tom Jones, a boogie woogie piano jam for Robert Plant and a classic cover from Dionne Warwick to mention but a few of the performances from the great and good that appear here. But Jools' show has always been about championing new and cult artists too, and female jazz vocalist of the moment Norah Jones just had to put in an appearance with her cover of the Nina Simone classic "In The Dark", along with indie regular Badly Drawn Boy. In fact his offering, "The Can Is Open" in particular shines given the Jools treatment with all the big easy listening Bacharach trumpets and playful piano melodies giving it the simple but epic sound so characteristic of his recent album. Likewise the ever charismatic Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals is perfect for a good old croon with the band on the old Sinatra standard "Fly Me To The Moon". Sounding like a late night music fan's fantasy jam session, (just listen to Huey joking "hey is there anything left in that bottle?"), More Friends is essential for fans of that big band sound--young or old. --Caroline Butler

        4 out of 5 stars Good listen & I'm not a Big Band fan........2003-03-26

Saw a few names with JH on the "friends 1" installment, that I passed on because of the Big Band thing (will likely pick it up after listening to "More Friends" CD). It starts off with a rollicking tune by Sam Moore & Sam Brown (one of my favorite female vocalists) cooled off by a nice cover by Norah Jones. Then turn up the volume, Edwin Starr rocks through "Snowflake Boogie". Above average tunes with Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones (never thought I would ever be listening to Tom Jones!), Chrissie Hynde, Blind Boys, Marianne Faithfull, Beverley Knight & Jimmie Cliff. One of the highlights for me is the haunting cover of "First Time Ever I Saw you Face" with the Stereophonics. Overall a very good CD (it was worth the price just for the first 9 tunes!), good enough to make me go back and buy Vol I. Cheers!

I saw these guys performing in Las Vegas while I was on holiday - I live in England - and I immediately went backstage in between sets and asked if they had any CDs to sell. They had 2; I bought them both, and my house is one of probably only a few in Britain that now rocks to wicked cowboy music. Highly recommended, particularly the track All Cried Out.
