Wilco's de facto frontman, Jeff Tweedy, sports a colorful past, one where he wrote paint-peelers dedicated to late Minutemen founder D. Boon as a member of the feted (and maybe fated) Uncle Tupelo and where he dolefully crooned Woody Guthrie lyrics on 1998's Mermaid Avenue. But Wilco's Summer Teeth shows hardly a tatter of Tweedy's herky-jerky postpunk intensity or the agrarian rootsiness that so often came in the past from him. Instead this layered album spreads its digits far into guitar-heavy Britpop, with full-group backing vocals carrying bouncy choruses and synths whistling over the melodies. The tunes sound like a crosshatch of orchestral plans and an execution drawing on Alex Chilton and Big Star, the Kinks, and, only distantly, Wilco's debut, A.M. "We're Just Friends" and "Via Chicago" stand as harmonized twists on ballad formulas, the latter recalling Mermaid Avenue's "California Stars" with the opening line, "I dreamed about killing you again last night / And it felt all right to me." So it's not always uplifting or cheery, but it's got dozens of surprises in a mere 15 songs. --Andrew Bartlett

Definitely CAN Stand It..........2007-06-21

Summerteeth marks the point where the wheels officially fell off the wagon for die-hard Uncle Tupelo & AM/Being There Wilco fans. From the opening pop-rocky "Can't Stand It" (intentionally made radio-friendly by the record label), it became clear that alt-country wasn't going to be the name of the game anymore. "She's A Jar" briefly confuses you into thinking otherwise, but "A Shot In The Arm" - possibly the best song on the record - sends the album in yet another direction with the help of a looped piano track and synth effects.

The first three tracks pretty much set the tone for the remainder of Summerteeth. The album continues swinging between up-tempo toe-tappers ("I'm Always In Love", "Nothing'severgonna...", "ELT"), borderline alt-country ("Via Chicago", "When You Wake Up...") and slow, soft tunes ("We're Just Friends", "My Darling").

Overall, I like this record because it's so ecclectic. You never get bored due to all the variety, and the hidden/bonus tracks provide a nice little surprise at the end. Not as good as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but VERY close.

Wilco's Deceptive Masterpiece.......2007-03-29

If this album was playing at a pool party and you could only hear the melody and beat, you might think, wow, what a fluffy little pop album, sounds like the Beatles or something. HOWEVER, when you start to listen to the lyrics and examine the dark lyrical content, you realize that this album is not what it appears on the surface. The arraingments are a little more complex than you think. "I'm Always In Love" ranks with the best of Wilco's material, a song with cryptic lyrics and a real toe-tapping rythym. "I Can't Stand It" is also addictive. Overall I would say the album explores the lonliness of life on the road. I put this up there with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as Wilco's best.

Quite possibly my favorite Wilco album.......2006-07-30

Maybe it's because I live out in the country and don't listen to the radio, but I got on the Wilco boat after most folks had been around the lake a few times. There was a huge buzz surrounding Wilco after the release of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in 2002, but I didn't get my hands on it until much later. After I fell in love with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I was recommended Summerteeth. While I'm on the boat now, I still consider myself a newcomer to the Wilco. I don't have all the albums yet and I haven't read the books (though I did enjoy the documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart), so this review is for all those other newcomers that I eager to find out what this Wilco band is all about.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that across the board, Wilco is classified as a country band. I'm not sure how that happened, but to all those narrow minded folks out there saying "I like all kinds of music except country," don't be like that; give it a shot. I maintain that truly great music transcends genre. The arrangements of these songs are rich with harmonicas, piano, guitar, and ambient electronic noise. The lyrics are nothing short of brilliant.

Summerteeth is not as intricate as Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. That isn't a criticism, just an observation. Summerteeth is a shining example of Wilco's beautiful and humble beginnings.

Great Songs!!! Don't Miss Out!!.......2006-07-13

Of all Wilco Cds, this one is by far my favorite! I absolutely adore Jeff Tweedy. These songs just wouldn't be the masterpieces they are without his vocals. "Shot in the Arm" "How to Fight Lonliness" and "She's a Jar" are the outstanding songs of the disc, however all the songs are great. I just can't say enough about this cd!! I love it. If you enjoy this cd, you may also like Mermaid Avenue. While both volumes are great, I highly suggest the first.

Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

Nanci Griffith first built her audience through intimate, well-timed, and energetic concerts. This live set, recorded in August 1988 at the legendary Anderson Fair in Houston, contains her best performances of originals like "Workin' in Corners," "The Wing and the Wheel," and "Love at the Five and Dime," as well as songs by Bill Staines, Eric Taylor, and Julie Gold, songs she helped bring just shy of fame: "Roseville Fair," "Deadwood, South Dakota," and "From a Distance." Griffith learned her craft and got her chops down at Anderson Fair, and her gift for narrative shines brilliantly in her (often hilarious) between-song stories, and her unaffected, twangy whisper. Great CD! My mom and I used to drive around in our old camry listening to this (audio cassette) when I was younger. I recently purchased this CD for her as a present since our tape got eaten up a long time ago. Nanci is great appeals to all listeners in my opinion.

A moving series of songs intertwined with Nanci's set up stories, from first to last this is a great CD. The pace and tempo of songs ebbs and flows carrying you on Nanci's well crafted journey. From the romantic "More Than a Whisper" and the enchanting "I Would Bring You Ireland" culminating in the fast paced, toe-tapping, vibrating "Spin on a Red Brick Floor", this is a collection to enjoy and treasure.

Same Material - Much more impressive recording.......2007-03-22

God this is a great album. Nanci Griffith is a national treasure.

Emerging on the wobbly legs of a foal in the late 70s, with anonymous production from people who didn't understand how to package her mousy persona, what MCA sold us was a cutesy, virginal, perky gal. This is not where Nanci's presence is now. If I play one of the early MCA CDs for someone, I know the first question will be "Are you sure this is the right speed?" because she has a high, nasal delivery. Griffith hung in there and has become a deeply affecting & personal singer-songwriter. Without changing terribly much about her voice, and singing the same songs at her live shows, and on this cd, Griffith has transformed both herself and the material. A tribute to taking your licks and developing your delivery/voice at live shows.

Usually live versions of studio songs suffer by comparison. Not here! Stripped of the earlier folky instrumentation and resung as a wiser, older woman, some of these songs become astonishing. In other hands, her standard topics (spinsters, wallflowers, living alone) would be ruminating or miserable, but Nanci's talent is to make anyone love these songs; witness Pearl Jam fan below, and I'm a young urban guy.

She pulls emotional devastation out of the one-two punch of "Working in Corners" and "More than a Whisper" in newly austere, stripped down versions. Both of them embody a "hanging in there despite my pain & regret" mood. I have a hard time getting to the other songs, which are almost all great, in deference to these two; over and over.

My favorite cds complement her voice with minimal, calm orchestrations. When a producer steers her back to over production, I've not enjoyed them as much. I allow myself to forget this CD (and Flyer) every now and then, so that I can rediscover them again. The impact of a fresh listen has never diminished. Both provide a rich pick me up.

Nanci Griffith is profound without being pompous. After a listen you want to write her a thank you note.

(Note: This review focuses on her emotional depth, but she's also darned funny & charming on this cd.)

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

There are some early masterpieces here.......2006-04-12

From the ethereally plaintive 'Talking in Your Sleep,' to the romp of 'Cotton Jenny,' this is quintessential Gordon Lightfoot. I'm haunted by 'Ten Degrees and Getting Colder,' but it's a good haunting. This is one of the earlier great 12 string songs that Gordon has continued to pour out over time. The 'Summer Side of Life' itself is a subtle treatment of the Viet Nam experience that combines Folk with soaring Gospel. 'Nous Vivons Ensemble' seems to be from another era, but still draws your attention, and Miguel has a warm and catchy riff that you find youself tuning back to...

In some ways it's a period piece, bringing you back to 1970. This is clear in the Cotton Jenny riff at the end of each verse (after the wheels of love line) - it actually has a late 60s pop feel. Above all 'Talking in Your Sleep' stands as timeless. It could fit in today's music, and is the crowning work of this collection.

The other songs have their points, it may just take a little longer for them to sink in, as is sometimes the case with Lightfoot. You start out with two or three hooks and end up wanting to listen to almost everything. I would have bought it just to hear the following verse "Now he's traded off his Martin, but his troubles are not over, for his feet are almost frozen and the sun is sinkin low."

Life Is Good For Gordon.......2006-03-18

Gordon Lightfoot's 'Summer Side of Life' released in '71 was his seventh album overall and his second under the Reprise label. Continuing his rise in popularity in the U.S. this -11 track- collection contains many memorable tunes, some of the best being; 'Miguel', 'Cotton Jenny' and my personal favorite, "Talking In Your Sleep.'

This Album Is Worth the Price of the CD Just for "Miguel".......2004-06-27

Buy this CD right now! If "Miguel" isn't one of the top 100 most beautiful songs ever written on the planet Earth, then I've never ever heard a gorgeous Gershwin or Cole Porter or Lerner & Lowe or Paul Simon or Bob Marley or Woody Guthrie or Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan or Lennon & McCartney song in my life!! Curiously, "Miguel" isn't on GL's relatively recent 4-CD boxed set (which is complete craziness!). The rest of this album features some of Gordon's most compelling writing, as well, with "10 Degrees and Getting Colder," "Cabaret," "Cotten Jenny" (a textbook example of metaphorically perfect lyrics), "Nous Vivons Ensemble," and "Talking in Your Sleep" being absolute keepers. From 1966 to 1982, Gordon put out about 12 perfect albums, where you wanted to hear every melodic, literate, high-quality song (with no "filler" on any of the records). Summer Side of Life is definitely one of the "magnificent dozen!" But "Miguel," all by itself is worth the price of the CD. By the way, I'm a songwriter myself, and I guarantee I would sell my soul to old Mr. Scratch and/or any of his minions for the privilege to have written such a compellingly memorable tune!!!

Outstanding Lightfoot.......2004-05-28

This is a great CD, probably his finest. Ironically, "Cotton Jenny" - the one song that most will be familiar with - is the weakest song here. The second "side" in particular is far more diverse than most Gordon Lightfoot tends to be. Songs like "Same Old Loverman" and "Love and Maple Syrup" are just as good if not better than his singles from the era. Even if you have the Complete Greatest Hits, this is well worth owning!

This is Lightfoot's Best.......2003-11-23

The first artist I ever got into was Gordon Lightfoot and bought many of his albums in my early years of music listening. Since then I moved onto others such as Pink Floyd, Beatles, Neil Young, Al Stewart among others. I love all of them, but Lightfoot has stayed with me and when listening to him I get into a very special place. So from this Lightfoot fan, while he has put out many wonderful albums and songs (many of which are too good to be hits) Summer Side of Life is his best. If you love Lightfoot and don't have this album get it now you will be sooooooo glad you did

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.

Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

A Good Feeling.......2002-06-20

This album is one of the best from the late 80's. I mean that's when the Olympics still meant something. Something changed with this world in the 90's and it went to hell in a handbasket. I mean you hardly ever hear of an Olympic album nowdays. "One Moment In Time" is a song that everyone can relate too. We all have had our one moment in time or we will have eventually. I was starting college back in Oklahoma in the late summer of 1988 when this album was released and it takes me wayyyyyyy back to a better time. Also, something a lot of people don't know about the song "Indestructible" by the Four Tops, is that this song was played at the end of the 1988 movie "Alien Nation". It is a great song as well and if you watch the movie it really gives you a good feeling inside about making new friends and trusting people and giving them a chance. I highly suggest buying this cd, I had mine stolen and am preparing to purchase another one immediatley. I am going to purchase two of them, just in case it ever goes out of print.

This album was my favorite growing up. It brings back so many memories. I love this album and recommend it to anyone who likes to reminise on the 80's!

A Moment In Time That Should Last Eternally.......2000-07-30

This album is magnificently done. It is extremely impressive. I am especially impressed with "One Moment In Time" song by Whitney Houston. There wasn't a more perfect person that could have song this song the way she did! The feelings and effects that were put into this song make it the more satisfying. This song truly gives you the motivation and incentives to live for. The words are so inspiring. Each time I hear it, I am nearly in tears because it tells a person that 'in one moment in time you can change the world'. The fact that the song was put on an Olympic Games album is also very nice. The games are all about making dreams come true. This song as well the others songs on the album tells you to think about when your dreams come true not if they will!

Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time" is a PERFECT 10.......1998-12-13

"One Moment in Time" as performed by Whitney Houston is the most powerful and moving piece of music ever recorded or performed in the English language. Neither the "Star Spangled Banner" nor "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" has the ability to move a person in the way this piece can and does and they are probably the closest thing to "One Moment in Time". If you can listen to this piece of music and are not immediately ready to go out and take the world by the bootstraps then you had better check your pulse. You probably don't have one.

Poco Indian Summer.......2007-01-23

This is a four or five star album, but I have only given one as Lemon Records cds are often mastered from vinyl. This is no exception and the Japanese edition is far better with no vinyl noise. Unfortunately, it is more expensive, but if you like this album, it is certainly worth it.

Pleasant, Melodic effort though somewhat ordinary.......2006-10-17

I think its ludicrous to call this the sound of a desperate band as one reviewer has. Its overall a very pleasant outing, well sung, well played and typical melodic songwriting from the various band members. I listened to it a lot when it first came out. It hasn't quite stood the test of time and does show some signs of a band on their last leg (at least in this formation as T.B. Schmit was to leave soon thereafter for the greener pastures of the Eagles).

Strong melodies and great singing do have their place in rock music and there are some nice ones here. Lyrics have never been a Poco strong suit and are typcially slight here. T.B. Schmit's 3 songs are all very good. I always thought it was unfortunate when he moved to the Eagles where he would be limited to 1 song per record rather than the 3 he would normally get with Poco. If you listen to the body of work he did with Poco as compared to the Eagles you will understand. That said none of his songs here are quite as good as his best, but all are worthwhile.

The Paul Cotton songs are pretty good. The title song is one of his best and the rockers such as "Living in the Band" and "20 years on" pretty much delivery the goods. The 10 minute extended 3 part Rusty Young song, "The Dance" is o.k. Unfortunately, when you do the Eagles comparision here to lets say, "Hotel California" you do get a sense of how the Eagles grew as a band while Poco seems to be treading water at this point. None of this should be taken to diminish the impact this band had whether that be on country rock in general or specifically the Eagles.

At this point, Richie Furay was long gone and nobody can dispute the fact that he was the true architect of this sound and Poco itself. Still, this record brings a smile to me even to this day. For die hard Poco fans its still recommended. For others, there are better places to go rather than this effort. In conclusion I would say for the end of the T.B. Schmit Poco era, you would really be better off looking for the live cd, The Last Roundup. It contains a number of songs from Indian Summer in arguably better versions plus outstanding versions of other Poco songs including Rose of Cimarron and a guest appearance by none other than Richie Furay.

Compare and contrast.......2006-07-02

I was always a Poco fan from the very beginning, but when I saw them open for Marshall Tucker Band in Shreveport La. I was completely blown away. I didn't even stay for Marshall Tucker.
It was general admission and I stood at Rusty Young's feet the entire show.
I saw the Eagles twice and other country rock bands but no one ever came close to the show I saw that night. Every member was on and the crowd was too. The performance was one of the best I have ever seen from any band, and I have seen most.
I have the entire Poco collection on LP and am collecting on CD.
Listen to the album Deliverin and it will sell you on the band.

Very Solid Close to the Tim Schmit Era.......2005-12-14

Indian Summer is a very solid, though not particularly remarkable release. Tim Schmit shines on the album, particularly on the fantastic Find Out in Time which may be one of the best songs Schmit ever performed. Unfortunately for Poco fans, the album would turn out to be Schmit's swan song with the band as he jumped ship to join the Eagles after Indian Summer was released.

Paul Cotton stands out front once again on Indian Summer, delivering big time on the laid back title track, and the rockers Twenty Years, Win or Lose and Living in the Band. Rusty Young is not as much of a presence on this album as on the preceding albums, but still delivers some fine steel guitar work as well as giving us a taste of things to come in the future through his song Downfall, his first out-front full lead vocal.

Indian Summer doesn't stand up among the best works in the Poco library, but it is still a very listenable album with some very good moments on it.

One of their best!.......2005-09-01

I am a long-time Poco fan, and gradually acquiring their works on CD. This is one of their best, with great tracks. Paul Cotton shines on this one too, and the title track is good.

Guys, if you don't know, what it is - besides the obvious - don't buy it. I almost regretted the purchase and started to enjoy it only after I overcame the shock. On this LP Sarah Brightman sings English songs that were popular in the XIX century and the musical tastes changed since then rather dramatically. So check out the samples first!

A great showcase for Sarah's exceptional tone .......2007-01-29

While other people may think this collection of songs does not do Sarah's voice justice, I strongly disagree. Indeed, if anything her New Age-sounding albums (such as Luna or something or other) I find horrendous and I think they completely scatter the good qualities of her voice. Not so in this album. True, the songs here are not well-known nor are they decorated with operatic frills which Sarah has the well-known ability to perform, but there is a different beauty here, my friends. The legato, angelic quality of Sarah Brightman's voice can truly be heard in these simple melodies, light and free from the heavy chains of pulsed pop and mediocre attempts at an Enya-like portrayal. THESE songs she sings well, THIS is one of her better albums, and HERE is her beautiful sound which I missed in some of her other albums.

Sarah in Recital.......2006-06-08

I believe I own all of the CDs Sarah Brightman has put out and yes, this one is quite different from all the others she's done.

In this CD she sings (in a strictly classical style) some of the many British folksongs collected and arranged by Benjamin Britten; she is accompanied here by only a piano. Thus if you like classical singing and traditional Brit folksongs, then this is the CD for you. If you're wanting something more pop, hip, musical-theatrical, or celtic--look elsewhere.

Sarah has developed her voice over time and this CD is a good example of how all those singing lessons have paid off as she has a beautiful classical voice (amply evident on this CD) as well as the big, full belt style she delivers in musical theatre production numbers (on other CDs).

This is a great CD for these reasons, but not one for the masses.

Folk songs are not suited to The Divine Sarah's voice.......2005-08-24

When Sarah sings in her soprano voice, I describe her voice as "liquid silver notes of perfection." However, even though her voice sounded lovely, it isn't suited to folk songs and folk singing.

I am definetely a fan of English/Irish/Scottish folk songs and have a fairly large collection of them, but this album will be one of those albums I rarely play.

Because she does have such a gorgous voice, it has the effect of making these songs sound, for lack of a better phrase, artificial and somewhat forced. I think her voice might be a little too trained and operatic, even though she is not an opera singer, for these kinds of songs.

In other words, I think her voice might be too good to sing such simple songs, which is not meant to cast aspersions on people who have lovely voices and sing folk songs. Examples of these would be the Angel of Riverdance, Katie McMahon and Connie Dover! Both of these womyn have high, lovely, voices but they don't sound as trained as Sarah does.

So I can't really reccomend this album.

Unique and Distinct Voice Quality.......2005-02-25

There's a gallery of professional singing Sopranos today, and each has her own specific strengths, history of accomplishments, recognition and influence. The uniqueness that Sarah Brightman presents the listener and viewer is that of a totally dedicated artist who has expanded and refined her voice in an area that other Sopranos haven't - youthfulness, diction, control and width. Starting at an early age she succeeded and excelled in a variety of styles and genres. On this CD, with the simple piano accompaniment that enhances her distinctiveness, she's able to maintain the most melodious range, diction and duration. She enhances the meaning of the folklore (whether English or French) and the classics, as it has not been done before. The selection of music pieces offers and tests her voice skills exceptionally well. Any voice student and expert must not miss the opportunity to identify the voice features that Sarah Brightman's talent offers. Her voice uncovers Soprano skills that usually remain hidden.

Going for Baroque.......2003-01-09

Here lies master collection from ten years and fifty discs of examples from baroque era performed by choirs, soloists and instrumentalists.

Conducted by energetic Robert King and his King's Consort, this is just superb!

It will introduce one to baroque or add to one's enjoyment. Especially enjoyed Purcell's "Hear my prayer, O Lord" and Gabrieli's "Salvator noster."
