The seductive music of Don Williams has an insulated quality about it that makes it hard to resist. It's as if the world is swirling out of control around the Gentle Giant, yet he barely raises an eyebrow, blithely singing his soft, calming tunes. Give a Hot Country Star these songs, and their simple truths about love, faith, and country life would seem like platitudes. However, in the caress of Williams's warmhearted baritone, they come off as sincere, timeless nuggets of wisdom. With the barest of accompaniment, Williams took 10 of these 12 songs to the top of the country charts (while the remaining pair reached No. 2) in the '70s and '80s. Though he penned hits for many others, his own smashes usually came courtesy of writers such as Bob McDill and Wayland Holyfield, though Williams, a Texas native, clearly relates to their unpretentious, bucolic sentiments. l love the soothing, rich sound that Don Williams has. His voice is so mellow and I just find myself relaxing and forgetting the stress of the day frome the sound of his voice. I really think this is one great cd.

What a great album. I have this one and I can honestly say that I don't know which one is the best. But how can I say that anyone of Don's song aren't the best. Don has been a favorite of mine for along time. He has such a gentle voice and when you go to one of his concerts - OH MY!!! what a show. They are well worth attending and you will definitely fall in love with this gentle giant and that beautiful voice. I am never afraid to buy any of his albums or CD'S because I know that I will never be disappointed.

What bad things can you say about Don Williams? Nothing comes to mind. His voice makes the simplistic, pure songs that he sings sound like nothing else. Mr. Williams' voice is like a warm blanket. If you feel bad, put on "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good." Feeling a little reminiscent? Play "Good Ole Boys Like Me." There is not a bad song on this album, not one. From "I Believe In You" to "Tulsa Time" and finalized by "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend," this album has it all. I didn't give it five stars for the simple reason that I listen to other artists a little more than Mr. Williams. However, this album ranks as one of my all time favorites and I love listening to it.

If you're a Don Williams fan, you certainly don't need a review to tell you about the songs on this CD. If you're not yet a fan, then this CD is a great place to start. This CD provides the basic "Don Collection", his older works. I don't believe anything on this work was recorded after about 1988...which is good news for you. I believe Don's best work is his oldest. He has a truly beautiful mellow, barritone voice that stands above any other you'll ever hear. Once you've enjoyed this CD, do yourself another favor and buy the oldest works of his you can find (Greatest Hits Vol. 1, or Listen to the Radio).

This Collection is a great place to start for any fan of Americana/folk styled country music. Smart arrangements, thought-provoking lyrics, and Don's flawless vocal delivery transcend this music to a higher level than typical country. I consider Don's music in the same realm as Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons and the other greats of "roots music"; and that's saying a lot.

Don is the most underrated country singer of all time in this old cowboy's opinion. He is a class act all around. This album is the epitomy of what Don Williams is all about. I have listened to this CD probably at least 500 times and am not tired of it yet. You will not go wrong with this selection.

Second of two CDs sampling songs from Archie Bleyer's Cadence Records label. Following the lead of volume one, among the 14 charting tracks included, are major hits from the labels' mainstays - Andy Williams, the Everly Brothers, Johnny Tillotson and the Chordettes. More big hits come in the form of Lenny Welch's exceptional "Since I Fell For You" and Bleyer's own version of the Ames Brothers' cutesy "The Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane". Rounding out the repertoire are Jamaican-born pianist Don Shirley's "Water Boy", a couple of Eddie Hodges pimply teen tunes, Link Wray's dark instrumental, "Rumble" and Charlie McCoy's minor pop hit, "Cherry Berry Wine". Sound quality is excellent overall with some hiss on some of the older tracks, not to be unexpected given the vintage of the original recordings. The eight-page liner notes booklet provides backround on the performances and some insight into the label's history. While a tad stingy on track count, this is a well-executed, diverse sampling of one of the 50's small but prolific independent record labels.

Over and over again, Don Williams continues to put out albums for his loyal fans. Even if they are just re-released old favorites, we still love them and are never disappointed. This is one of the best of his collections and has given me many hours of enjoyment. I may just have to buy another one for when this copy wears out.

With a few cuts included from the first live album, "An Evening with Don Williams," this recording features even more songs you can usually hear if you attend one of Mr. Williams' live performances. For the Don Williams fan who has not been fortunate enough to attend one of his live performances, this CD, like the first live recording, continues to give the listener that in-person feeling that comes from attending a concert. The in-person exchange between Mr. Williams and his fans is incredible, and this CD captures many of the reasons why, as Doug Stone says, he's "the only man who can make 'em stand up when he sits down and plays." You can't go wrong with this CD!

    Don has one of the most consistently good voices I have heard and he uses it to great effect in this collection. This is the perfect CD to be listening to when you're on a trip driving into the sunset and feeling nice and relaxed. Beautiful job Don!
