Well, you've got to give them credit for diversity, as well as for impressive vocal and instrumental chops. On the follow-up to their gold-selling One More Day, Diamond Rio run the gamut from old-style country shuffle ("If You'd Like Some Lovin'") to jazzy Western swing ("Something Cool") to middle-of-the-road pop ("Completely"). And there's an ambitious instrumental that sounds like Aaron Copland on snuff ("Rural Philharmonic"). But with Lonestar eating their lunch these days, you can tell they're dancing as fast as they can. They describe "The Box" as "Steely Dan meets Flatt & Scruggs" but forgot the cool factor. Their declaration of eternal love ("I Believe"), marred by an overblown orchestral opening, is more syrupy than Touched by an Angel. And the title tune is Diane Warren's least interesting ballad, which is saying something. Where they shine is where they started, in bluegrass-flavored country: "Beautiful Mess" manages to be both sexy and melancholy, and the Bill Anderson-Steve Wariner collaboration, "Make Sure You've Got It All," captures the gut-dropping devastation of romantic D-day. A smorgasbord? Pick and choose on this one, friends. --Alanna Nash

3 out of 5 stars not thrilled with the album.......2007-01-03

My husband and I are huge Savage Garden fans. We were both disappointed with this album. It seems like towards the end of the CD they were just trying to fill in space. It is ashame because there were so many other wonderful songs they created that did not appear on the album. I would reccomend buying the original CD's separately, get more for your money that way.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not a Best of.......2006-12-06

I have to agree that this could have been better due to certain track choices. And instead of having the dvd they could have input another cd and had a complete library of Savage Garden songs including all the B-sides the two Darren Hayes songs on this cd and the never released in America song "Mine" which I have to say is one of their best.

All in all I don't regret getting it, but it could have better.

after 6 years apart, the best of savage garden cd has finally been released & i am happy to have a copy of my own. the album definetly does not disappoint except songs such as "gunning down romance", "two beds & a coffee machine", "i don't know you anymore", "carry on dancing", "universe" and "mine" which were great songs could have been on there. the two songs by darren hayes were awesome and better than ever. my fav. song would have to be "i knew i loved you". Fantastic album overall

4 out of 5 stars If only it had Tears of Pearls!!!.......2006-03-16

Savage Garden is, without a doubt, a band that left behind music that has lived on though they split up. And this is one of the first times I find such a complete compilation for any artist... though that's easy to accomplish when you only have two discs under your sleeve.

Nevertheless, they were both two great discs and the best of them has been brought over to these new album, spotless... the only thing that holds me back from giving this a 5 rating, is the fact that it misses my favorite Savage Garden song: Tears of Pearls, from the first record...

Still, it's forgivable: even though the song was good, it wasn't that much of a hit as other that are included...

A must have if you don't have the originals and are interested in Savage Garden music.

The tragic events of 9/11 produced their share of unexpected heroes, few more unlikely than Daniel Rodriguez, the NYPD's "singing cop." The Puerto Rican-American tenor's by now familiar rendition of "God Bless America" won over the hearts of his city, then nation--but took shots from a few cynical critics, too. Rodriguez emerged from the experience with career mentoring from no less than Placido Domingo, and this sophomore release gratifyingly proves that Rodriguez was no marketing fluke. Tellingly, the musician bookends this collection with personal tributes to the singer he obviously hopes to pattern his career after, Mario Lanza, including the unabashed romantic bluster of "Be My Love," the song Rodriguez proposed to his wife with. The singer and producer Tom Scott chart a course through a slate of familiar modern ballads and Broadway standards both old (Carousel's "If I Loved You") and new ("Only Love" and "She Was There" from The Scarlet Pimpernel). But the album's most intriguing selections are a pair of Spanish language love songs ("Jurame," "Solamente Una Vez"), recordings whose warm, sumptuous flavor seems to hint at even brighter horizons for the sturdy tenor and improbable modern American hero. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Rodriguez, the Best !.......2006-11-11

Daniel Rodriguez is one of my favorite vocalists. This CD has a mixture of songs, including very beautiful duets. It is good listening for home and driving. Exceptional, as are his other works.

2 out of 5 stars Fine voice, but everything else needs improvement.......2006-05-02

I'll admit, I bought this CD because Kristin Chenowth appears on it (she sounds fabulous, by the way!). Turns out Daniel Rodriguez is a decent singer.

However, one listen to this CD is probably all it will ever get from me. For starters, the choice of songs is horrendous. It was as if a bunch of people got together and voted on the sappiest, most overblown, most tired songs ever written, and these were the top choices.

On top of that, the arrangements are completely unimaginative. Several of these songs could have been saved by interesting arrangements, but apparently "boring" was the theme the arranger was seeking.

My biggest complaint, however, is about the production. So much reverb has been added to Daniel's vocal as to almost obscure it. Usually reverb like that is only used to cover up serious flaws in the performance, which doesn't seem to be the case here -- the vocals themselves seem fine. That would indicate to me that it was justa a terrible choice made by the producer. Adding to the production problems is the poor use of the stereo sound field in regard to the orchestra: a full orchestra can be used to create a rich and wide sound field quite easily, but the producer has chosen to mix most of the orchestra toward the center of the sound field, both burying it beneath the vocals and leaving the overall recording sounding like something more appropriate for AM radio than for the high-fidelity sound systems that have been in existence for, oh, the past 50 years.

I'm sure there is an audience for this sort of thing, but the flaws in the production and material make it something I cannot recommend. Mr. Rodriguez would be well advised to bring on a new production team for future projects, because I think he really does have the talent to make a career out of his singing.

Very talented tenor...had the pleasure of seeing him in person twice...will buy all his cd's..

5 out of 5 stars Love, Love, Love It!.......2005-06-12

I can't remember when I last bought a CD I've enjoyed as much. Received it yesterday, started playing it this morning and just keep listening to it. His voice gives me chills, the song selections are wonderful, I especially like "Completely" which I had never heard before, great lyrics, perfect rendition. Just came back to Amazon to order his "Spirit of America", know his voice singing these songs will probably bring me to tears, but that's OK! Buy it, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Beautiful.......2004-03-10

Daniel's singing is wonderful on this CD. I gave everyone I know copies. His incredible looks and his voice are magnificently nostalgic and yet he brings a freshness to opera. He has this Caruso like charm and his voice comes so close to Caruso's yet, Daniel sounds like Daniel. I think this man can play Caruso if given half a chance. Everything about Daniel is classic. I've seen him perform live and his voice and presentation are great. We saw him sing on Valentine's Day this year and he brought down the house that night. I cannot wait to hear his next release!

5 out of 5 stars "Cold as a frozen waffle"? .......2005-11-30

Hardly, Amy. She claims in "Why Do I?" to have a cold heart, hence the frozen waffle reference. That line alone is enough (it's a simile, right? Help me, creative writing majors), by my lights, to earn five stars....But anyway, this woman is far from cold hearted - in fact, she probably has a little too much heart, if that's possible. And the great thing about her stuff is that it's expressed in an extremely witty, self-aware way - there's nothing sappy about it. She doesn't bleed her broken heart all over you, like many lesser female singer-songwriters (do I have to name names? OK. Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis M., Dido, etc. I could go on and on...). Folks, we're talkin' some extremely wry, sharp, literate stuff...Randy Newman, Loudon Wainwright, Elvis Costello territory...And this one ranks up there in her canon. It's possibly her best and would make a great starting place for someone interested in checking the amazingly talented Ms. Rigby out.

4 out of 5 stars Late nights with NPR.......2004-12-04

I first heard of Amy Rigby when she was interviewed by NPR; I was driving along I-80. Her album seemed like the perfect soundtrack to driving alone, at night. She so impressed me with the candor of her songs. I bought this album and have not regretted it in the least. 'Don't Ever Change,' 'Break Up Boots,' and 'Even the Weak Survive' continue to be favorites that I'll listen to on repeat, over and over. Her lyrics are smart, snappy, and insightful. I've always been a sucker for lyrics. Rigby's voice sometimes waxes thin and reedy, but her lyrics more than make up for what might be musically lacking.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, whimsical, soulful folksy, entertaining collection.......2004-05-21

In Til the Wheels Fall Off Amy Rigby provides an eclectic collection of mainly folksy songs that will definitely hit home with the more mature crowd. These are songs of introspection, retrospection and, occasionally, frustration with the complications and pace of life for the middle aged.

Rigby's voice has limited musical range but tremendous emotive range. Her voice stands as an excellent barometer for the emotional pressure that builds up in some of these songs, such as Don't ever Change, O'Hare and Even the Weak Survive, as well as an effective emotional counterpoint to her more whimsical entries, such as Are we Ever Gonna Have Sex again.

The sequencing and arrangement of some material on the album gives it a somewhat scattered feeling, creating a sort of rollercoaster emotional feel to the album which I think distracts from its overall effect. That's not a major complaint but it's enough to bump this one down a star in my ratings.

All in all, a very solid little gem of an album, one you will find as incredibly engaging as your teens will find totally boring!

4 out of 5 stars Great for grownups.......2004-02-11

As another New Yorker transplanted to Nashville, I have a special little place in my musical heart for Amy Rigby. I can't compare this CD to her other recordings, as it's the only one I've heard, but it's a good listen. There are a couple of great songs, and the rest is, well, just fine. It's too good to be called filler, but it a little lackluster half the time.

The first track uses wordplay seemingly for its own sake. Maybe that's the influence of being around southern songwriters, who do delight in words, as do I. But the protagonist who likes to pull wings off butterflies is unsympathetic. The title track is lyrically uninteresting, and I can't imagine why it's been singled out, but "Shopping Around" is a good relationship song. "Don't Ever Change", on the other hand, is absolutely breathtaking - I can't imagine anyone with a heart being able to listen to it without eyes getting a little moist. "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again" is hilarious and right on target, but I think the reviewer who said it was hard to write a funny song that isn't just a novelty had it right - this song is a (fun) novelty. I'm going to go out on a limb and make an allusion to another semi-obscure middle-aged Nashville songwriter who may be familiar to some Amy Rigby fans. I'd compare this song to Marshall Chapman's "Alabama Bad", not to her "Call the Lamas". It makes you laugh, but doesn't get to the heart of the matter.

"The Deal" is a nice enough whimsical song about the notion of having a relationship without having to compromise, "O'Hare" is a decent song, and "How People Are" is a low point on the CD. But "Even The Weak Survive" is, to me, a brilliant song, and one of a few reasons to buy this CD. The rest of the songs are fine, some, like "Last Request", are better than others, and some sound tailormade for some country star to re-record them.

Overall, I recommend the CD as a chance to hear a good songwriter with a mature viewpoint, a delightful wry sense of humor, and a sometimes-waifish voice that can express the most profound emotions with pure unadorned achiness. I love her voice. There is some truly great songwriting here, the recording is professional, and the instrumentation tasteful. The only drawback is the uneven quality in the songwriting. It never dips below mediocre, and rarely below pretty good, but several, if not half of these songs could easily have been omitted.

5 out of 5 stars A mature, funny album for.......2004-02-07

A longtime fixture on the New York indie-altie/power-pop scene, songwriter Amy Rigby has given the world another little gem with this fine, episodic album. It's not an entirely cohesive work, as she shifts from somewhat dense, introspective rock songs to folkie acoustic numbers and back again... Not that I have a problem with artists who won't limit themselves to one style of music, it's just that the the transitions aren't always that smooth. Nonetheless, in this case the parts are more than the sum of the whole, and a handful of songs on here made this one of my favorite records of 2003. The blisteringly hilarious novelty song, "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?" made me laugh out loud when I first heard it: it's the all-too-familiar tale of the modern-day couple whose erotic life has been curtailed both by busy schedules and everyday routine; the tart, too-true lyrics and Rigby's dead-on delivery make this an instant classic. Other favorites include the opening track, "Why Do I," a power-pop exploration of the neurotic impulse towards self-sabotage, and "Don't Ever Change," a touching embrace of normalcy and imperfection in those we love, and in acceptance of the quirky flaws of the world at large. As with the other two songs, it's Rigby's wry, gentle, deft slice-of life observations that make this tune such a winner. Overall, this album shows its greatest appeal in its sense of maturity and un-corny wisdom; it's nice to see that as Baby Boom indie-rockers age and mellow out that they can still make such great music.

4 out of 5 stars Diamond Rio delivers a genuine, hopeful, heartfelt album.......2004-04-07

While the cover of Diamond Rio's Completely intially struck me as cheesy-almost low budget, the contents quickly wiped away all my preconceptions and replaced them with smiles, tears, anguish, and laughs, touching on emotions the kind of which very little music these days ventures into. This album is a tour de force of well composed and heartfully delivered songs by one of musics finest harmonizing bands. The standouts here: I Believe, a song that speaks not only to the infinite bond between those of here and those who have passed, but also to those of us who have "The Faith". We All Fall Down, this song is just incredible-a song of hope and inspiration that reminds us that you cannot always be on top and that its okay to not be-that what is important is how we respond and make good things happen in the face of adversity. This song touches me deeply as a devoted husband and father. Wrinkles, this song is tears and smiles all at once. Just an awesome lyric about how wrinkles come from time and true love, and how its okay-even cool-to get the "wrinkles" that come with life, literally and otherwise. A Better Idea, this song makes me think of my wife. She is truly Gods Better Idea and this song is just a really sweet (and craftily written) way to express how so many of us feel about those people we love. Beautiful Mess, the leadoff single. This song is too good not to like. The video is the epitome of cool and the lyrics are about that feeling we have all had when someone drives us crazy-in that really good way we never forget. Big Ol'Fire, a positive uplifting song-with just a tad of how do you like me now-about making something of yourself in the face what others say (with a twist of the "fire" you light causing them to see the light). I relate to this song alot because I grew up in a small town where people would tell me I would never leave and I have since moved away and done quite well thank you :)The rest of the album is exceptionally well put together as well with a cool mix of soft pop and edgy country. I only give it four stars because five is reserved for albums that are near perfect (there are few of these, see all of Tim McGraws albums since Everywhere for some examples). The 6 songs I have singled out are hard to find on 6 different albums much less one, much less as heartfully and with such polish as Diamond Rio does them here.

This album is one that would be a welcome addition to anyones collection.

5 out of 5 stars I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE BEST.......2003-04-17

The first time that I saw the video for I Believe, I cried. The song is so touching and moving! I have always loved Diamond Rio, and this song is one of their best. What a beautiful mess is just as wonderful. It is true, you do things half in a haze when you are near a person that you are deeply attracted to. I know that I have fallen victim to those circumstances. Over all I really enjoyed the CD.

5 out of 5 stars WELL WORTH THE MONEY.......2003-04-03

The radio stations in the Atlanta area have just begun to play "I Believe", and I give 5 stars on that song alone. I have not yet bought the CD, but I plan to as soon as possible. In my opinion, "I Believe" and "Beautiful Mess" make the CD well worth the price. I can't wait to hear the rest of it.

3 out of 5 stars Has some REAL Gems, and some Coal to boot!.......2003-02-27

Being my first real experience with Diamond Rio, I had heard "Beautiful MEss" a few times on the radio and was drawn to get this CD. Of course its a great, catchy tune, but I wanted to hear what else D.R. had up their collective sleeves. I will agree completely (pun) that this CD contains nearly the entire spectrum of country music, both modern and conventional CW formats... but the one fault here lays in that the band has gone a little too far in the production department.

Let's get the coal out of the way first. A few tunes ('I Believe','Something Cool','Completely') fall way short, or just way outside, the mark; 'Completely' is just out of its league here on this CD... a bit too much sap, not enough groove... 'I Believe' sounds like some Michael W. Smith/Christian Pop Band trying to touch uninterested heart strings that don't need touching... sure it's a love ballad, but its way too sappy for it's own good and WAY over-produced... not appropriate for a great country band such as these guys... 'Something Cool' reminds me of poor Alfalfa trying to impress the girl in the old 'Our Gang' series... awkward, schreechy, and WAY off key. It's a light hearted tune, but just falls WAY short of it's intended mark, and nearly makes the band look like a joke. Fortunately we all know better. The rest of this CD makes up for these shortfalls.

'Beautiful Mess' is the diamond (pun) in this mine. Catchy, country and powerful, if you cant find yourself singing along with this radio hit your mostly likely not alive.

'Big 'Ole Fire' is a fine tune, standard, if somewhat generic country material, but it works, is very listenable, uplifting and positive, and tastefully produced.

'The Box' weighs in as acceptable, great groove, although the acapella "the box!" spiked throughout the tune tends to embarrass the listener. Not to mention the vocals have moments reminiscent of Stevie Wonder in the 1970's... Odd... But the tune has its high points, its definately got funk. Perhaps it could have been produced more tastefully, but it works, somehow... still a good tune.

"We All Fall Down" and "Wrinkles" are both awesome tunes. powerful, emotional, catchy, well produced and well sung, the band pulls together here to recover from the tailspin of the above mentioned shortcomings!

'If you'd Like Some Lovin' is a great old-style Buck Owens-ish tune. Great vocals, just the right amount of production, perfect genre country-western crooning. These guys can really pull off some excellent stuff when they want to! This is the lighthearted approach that (unlike 'Something Cool') really does work well.

'You'll Find Me' hmmm... not bad... a bit whiny, not bad... nothing gained nothing lost... much of this material falls outside what many would consider "country music"... but this is what makes Diamond Rio so great. They are not staying within "the Box" (ugh!) of country music... and this is a good characteristic of any successful band...

As has been stated "Rural Philharmonic" works perfectly... a great break and very cool. Instrumentally, it could very well fit into the soundtrack of a great western epic. Fun, full of depth and complexity, (instrumental and choral)... a piece composed of several "parts" to come together as a fine instrumental country-groove-bluegrass-orchestral exhibition. This is quite possibly the most musically exceptional component of this CD.

"Make Sure You've Got It All" is a fine way to close out the CD. A more convential contemporary country sound, akin to a (not so nasal) Randy Travis sound... A good way to wind down the momentum of the CD's second half. Good song writing, mandolin playing and production value.

Sure, this CD has it's flaws, but there's no question i will now explore more of Diamond Rio's catalog, and thats a good indicator of the overall quality of this release.
ENJOY!

3 out of 5 stars Instrumentals and Vocals Shine On This One.......2003-02-09

As we've come to expect, Diamond Rio delievers some tight harmonies and amazing instrumentals on their latest album, "Completely." I think they would have been better served to find some better material to sing and play. "Beautiful Mess" is definitely the pinnacle of this CD, while "I Believe" is a decent yearning ballad. The rest of the songs seem to be more filler than anything. The band's harmonies can make up for some of it, but if you want a great Diamond Rio CD I would reccomend "IV" or "Greatest Hits."

Minneapolis-based Connie Evingson combines her experience in musical theater with her jazz singing in I Have Dreamed, a 55-minute set of Broadway standards backed by a crack ensemble. If there's a fault here, it's that the selections seem a little too safe--an overreliance on My Fair Lady and Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes that we've heard umpteen times before. That's probably why the highlight is a searing take on The Golden Apple's "Lazy Afternoon," with guitar and percussion providing her only accompaniment. Evingson fans will want this CD, but novices would do better to start with her more straightforward jazz releases, Fever: A Tribute to Peggy Lee and Some Cats Know. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Showtunes in jazzy disguise..........2000-05-16

All three of Connie's discs knock me out, but this one -- her recording debut -- is still my favorite. Cool, mature, textured jazz covers of some unlikely material from the Broadway stage. The songs may seem familiar to you, but they seem completely new and redesigned. Ranee Lee tried this approach on a disc in 1992, but Connie pulls it off without the gimmicks. This woman has a voice and she's not afraid to use it -- if you're a fan of female vocalists soaring above expert arrangements...GET THIS. Each time I play this disc for a friend, I create an instant fan with one listen.

5 out of 5 stars Standards Unstandardized.......2000-01-13

This CD is sung with such obvious passion, with such true devotion to the beautiful lyrics written for musicals such as "My Fair Lady," "The King and I," and "Oklahoma!" that it is almost irresistible. The music is familiar, yet sounds completely new (even to the listener who could recite every word spoken and sung by Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady"), and Evingson's voice is very soothing to hear. She makes the songs come alive, makes you want to sing along, and makes you wish she weren't only appearing live in concert in Minneapolis-St. Paul. This CD is a must for lovers of musicals and for those who appreciate clear, stylishly uncomplicated and genuine vocals. (And the music behind the voice is quite wonderful, too!)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album by one of the top Christian Songwriter/singer.......2002-09-04

Dallas Holm is undoubtabely one of today's most inspiring songwriter and singer. The title song on this album is such a descriptive example of someone who has had a personal meeting with Jesus as your Saviour and Lord. I have collected most of his albums and found that the song he wrote on the album "Before Your Throne" on the cross of Christ where he reminds us that 'the blood was red and the pain was real' is a great reminder of how far Jesus went to redeem us.

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening!!!.......2001-08-29

I really enjoyed this CD!! It had the right blend of music for the contemporary listener. It puts one's mind to the Lord and His worship!!! Great stuff!!!

5 out of 5 stars YET ANOTHER FANTASTIC PRODUCTION FROM DALLAS HOLM.......2000-08-10

I've been listening to the music of Dallas Holm for almost twenty years and I have yet to find fault with any of his great and inspiring music. The CD under review was bought for me by a friend in August 1994, as he knows that I enjoy any song by Dallas Holm."Completely Taken In" is special in that it came to me shortly before my father passed away in September 1994. Throughout funeral preparations and beyond all the tracks on this CD ministered to me, especially "COME ON IN".

Dallas has a unique way of expressing the great love that God has for people, and that comes through forcefully in this CD. So if it is solace, encouragement and comforting you are looking for, look no further than this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Dallas.......2000-03-25

Dallas does it again! Once again, he is able to showcase his incredible vocals with songs that touch the heart and soul of all.

The only complaint I have is that we don't get enough of Dallas on the airwaves. Keep it coming Dallas!

5 out of 5 stars The Hip at their peak.......2006-08-07

Their best album is Road Apples, but this comes in at a close second.

It was the last straight rock album before venturing into the obscure with Day for Night. At this time the band would sell out colosseums 3 nights in a row, and be the main attraction at outdoor festivals, building the crowd into a frenzied sea of bobbing heads, jumping up and down in unison as Gordon Downie balanced on top of the speakers on stage, held the microphone stand over his head and passionately screamed out lyrics while the band rocked their way to the climax.

Check out "Locked in the Trunk of a Car".

4 out of 5 stars Classic Canadiana, But That's OK With Me.......2006-05-04

Gordon Downie's prowess as a lyricist has always astounded me. His songs, from the "inside jokes" that no one outside a small group of people is supposed to get to the lyrics that make me go "What the F^#$ is he talking about?", I always appreciate his genius. This album is chock full of all of that.

There is a bit of a dark side to this album, but there is enough levity and pace to counterbalance it. From the opener to the closer, this album contains enough of the quntessential Hip quirkiness to satisfy the long-time fans, but also has enough mainstream substance to attract the casual fan. The acoustic "Wheat Kings" gently reflects on life on the Canadian prairies, but the songs that stand out on this recording are the rockers - "Looking For A Place To Happen" and "At The Hundredth Meridian" open the album, but it is "Locked In The Trunk Of A Car" that emerges as one of the top rock songs ever to come out of the frozen North with its sizzling guitar solos and great driving beat.

5 out of 5 stars this is as good as music gets.......2006-04-23

if you're not a hip fan or don't know the band - this is place to start. they had a large work of excellent music, but this album is amazing from start to finish. hard to classify because the range of their music, i guess the best way to describe them is guitar driven rock. fans of pearl jam are often times fans of the hip. whether the acoustic backed "wheat kings", the epic "eldorado" or my personal favorite the anthem like "fifty mission cap"; this album is wonderly different song, after wonderfuly different song. it's hard not to sing along, tap a foot and just plan enjoy a great band that's definitely unlike any other out there. enjoyable driving, partying or just hanging out. the finest canadian export since rush and that's saying alot. enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Quintessential Canadian record.......2005-05-20

Let me first say I have never been a Tragically Hip fan. THAT being said I can't ignore this albums perfection.

Albums that have a dark lined undercurrent to them, really speak to me, and Dowie's lyrical prowess here seems to reach into some real angst.

Needless to say as well, and I can't explain why, this is an absolutely quintessential "Canadian" album. The reasons though are not very easy to explain, but if you really want to understand the landscape and the feeling of a country, listen to this album.

That being said, this was without question the "Hip's" most successful album in terms of classic songs. Numerous videos were made from this album, and were staples of the then Muchmusic video program (Courage, At The Hundreth Meredian, Locked In The Trunk of a Car) up in Canada. It made the band household names, and has pretty much solidified them as the domineering band in Canada for years to come (yes more than Rush).

It's strange, many of the songs on here I enjoy immensly, Courage's catchy chorus, The weepy pigeon camera, the tragic Wheat Kings, the madness of Locked in a trunk in the car, to the almost Judas Priest riffing of Fifty Mission Cap.

I constantly have run into many Tragically Hip fans up North and 90% of them tell me this is their favourite album and their best.

I kind of got sick of the band's over-exposure, and the majority of their albums really do nothing for me minus one or two songs. However, this was the album where the band struck gold.

5 out of 5 stars Just a correction for how the Hip got their name.......2005-05-10

First of all, the song Courage is for Hugh Maclennan, a favourite mid-20th century Canadian novelist of Gord Downie's. And secondly the term 'Global Village' was coined by a Canadian philosopher of sorts named Marshal McLuhan.

One of B.B. King's first pop-inclined efforts, this CD features the support of rock- and blues-raised session players. King's progeny, in a sense. Keyboardist Al Kooper is the most notable, but it's guitarist Hugh McCracken who engages the master in a six-string duel on the jam "Cryin' Won't Help You Now/You're Mean." The album also contains King's breakthrough hit "The Thrill Is Gone." King didn't particularly enjoy the tune when he recorded it. But when he returned to the studio the next day to hear the strings that were added to sweeten its chorus in his absence, he was as taken by the transcendent, majestic sweep they lent his performance as the rest of the world was soon to be. Indeed, his visceral vocal and stinging guitar leads define the bittersweet aftertaste of lost love. While the sheen of the hit's production stands out among this album's cuts, the unvarnished emotion of its lyrics is what the blues is all about. --Ted Drozdowski

I'm a fan of B.B. King's work and have plenty of his albums. This one simply did not measure up for me. I give it three stars mostly because I am a fan. I would suggest instead getting either Live at the Regal or Live at Cook County Jail. There was a CD available with both on it but I think it may be out of print.

    5 out of 5 stars BB's greatest.......2002-02-19

This is still my favorite BB record, one that always improves my day. It should be combined with "Live and Well" to get more of the BB-Jerry Jemmott combination. Jerry's bass pushes BB and the band to even greater heights than usual. CD burners: combine the "Well" section with the "Completely well" set for complete bliss. It's nearly always in my car's CD to combat road rage.

5 out of 5 stars B.B. KING: Professor Of The Blues!.......2001-07-08

Ain't it the truth? "The Bluesmeister" B.B. King never misses a step on "Completely Well". In fact, "The King Of The Blues" is just smokin' with his "gal" Lucille the entire way, from the very first note of "So Excited" to the final fade out of "The Thrill Is Gone", which is B.B.'s first and only Top 40 hit single here in the U.S.. With each and every song on "CW" a true winner, you'll want to hit the ol' continuation button on your stereo to derive maximum musical pleasure from this one. As your doctor will tell you, he'll/she'll suggest that you listen to "Completely Well" (or any of B.B. King's masterworks) twice daily, and will ask you to call him/her in the morning! Yes, folks, "CW" is a sure fire cure for the blues, or for whatever else ails you. Heck, you don't even have to be sick to reap the benefits of great listening pleasure from "Completely Well". This is one CD you definitely need to have in your collection. With this remastered edition, complete with artwork and liner notes, you can't lose. Don't let this one pass you by!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Blues Album.......2000-03-16

I bought this album in '69 when I was fourteen and have been loving it ever since...nice to have the remastered CD. B.B. King breaks out of the blues into the realm of soul on this collection (recorded over two days). The backup band is excellent, although, never mind the Amazon.com review, Al Kooper doesn't play on it (Paul Harris handles keyboards). The most amazing thing going on here is the interplay between King and the legendary bassist Gerald "Fingers" Jemmott, who played on some of Aretha's best Atlantic sides. King authors or co-authors most of the titles and they are all solid songs. He's never sang better and Lucille wails. Besides, every record collection must include "The Thrill Is Gone," one of the greatest soul/blues cuts ever.
