One Of JD's Best.......2007-03-03
I love the tracks on this one. However, its really a shame that they didn't re-release this in John's lifetime. With many great re- releases of his since his passing, I'm glad to have many now which were unavailable before. Except for the fact that RCA shamefully had to wait until his untimely demise for the great cash in with these releases. Well at least we have them now..
Windsong John Denver.......2006-08-09
The music is glorious. I'm a big fan of John Denver, and this is my favorite of his ablums. I highly reccomend it for anyone who likes John Denver.
John Denver at his best........2005-07-28
By the time this album was released John Denver had practically become a household name. He had carved out his own little notch in music history. With his fan base secure he seems to have, in WINDSONG, put together an album that catered to his fans. Somehow, through the combination of lyrics and his own unique vocal sound, Denver is able to take the listeners mind off of whatever is occupying it and enables the listener to relax as he/she gives into reflection and imagination.
As I read the reviews here at Amazon.com I began to notice something I don't often find in many album reviews, and that is a lack of a few stand out tracks that appeal to all. Many albums have a few tracks, usually the ones that get a lot of radio play, that everyone comments on. The rest of the songs usually receive little or no attention. Here, in WINDSONG, I've noticed that while most people like the entire album, save a song or two, most have different favorites. I can't identify any stand out songs that drown out the others.
My favorite two songs are "Looking for Space" and "Fly Away." It would take too much time to try and describe just how these songs affect me. Suffice it to say that they, each in their own way, relate to me on a personal level. It's like Denver captured my thoughts, reflections and hopes and put them to song. As for the rest of the album, I enjoy all the songs with "Calypso" being another favorite.
Here's a little trivia for those of you who like "Fly Away." In case you've wondered what female sings back up on that song you may be surprised to find out that it is a young and not quite famous, at that time, Olivia Newton John.
Breezes.......2005-04-29
You can hear wind scraping over bare rocks and miniature plants of the alpine tundra, violently bifurcating through forests of coniferous trees, and you can feel wind swirling over the churning waters of a river, and you can see wind ripple and flow in waves through the deciduous leaves of aspen.
How would someone translate this invisible warmth into a song? John Denver begins by metaphorically expounding upon the strengths and human-like emotions and cries of the wind, announcing that the wind offers wisdom and to listen to her, finally culminating into an aural humming, representing the wind itself. It is a beautiful testament to the shifting and settling of air.
This is the original recording of the song, and John Denver re-recorded it twice in his later years (e.g. on the Very Best of album), taking advantage of newer and better recording materials. While these versions are like listening to Denver in surround-sound-super-stereo, and are almost more passionate in verse, the original track on the Windsong album will always be the first way original fans heard it. It commands more respect with its age.
Windsong, as an album, is filled with Denver's trademark layered-hums and drawn out singing styles that, I feel, make the songs more atmospheric and spiritual. This includes Cowboy's Delight, an almost haunting approach to mountains and the (to me) light that strikes them during different hours of the day. From the darkness of the Hour of the Wolf, to the dim outlines of the zodiacal light; the golden-pink bathing from the sunrise, and the noon sun sparkling off gold and muscovite, and biotite and garnets in granite, to fiery rocks in the sunset and purplish-pink lulls of alpenglow, to the silvery-blue moonshine or red-blue-silvers of starlight...
Also spiritual are Looking for Space, I'm Sorry, the pseudo-minimalist Spirit, and Fly Away (to a lesser degree). Your heart will soar at Calypso's plein-aire oceans and Love is Everywhere's upbeat folk/bluegrass fiddlin'! Shipmates and Cheyenne is a slower song with a beautiful chorus, Song of Wyoming is a calm end to the album (so calm, I can never recall the tune), and Late Nite Radio is a fun quirky truck-drivin' tune. As others have pointed out, Two Shots doesn't really belong here, but it's grown on me and I appreciate it for what it is. The song just starts off a bit too loudly.
Windsong is an immediate classic, with tracks that have unfortunately been released on many other albums...ones I got to first, so I feel this album isn't entirely new to me. But I sure wish I had been around when it was released. I would've done exactly what I do today: pop it in the tape-deck of my car, and drive off into the sunshine.
Spirit and Astronomy.......2004-04-14
I like all of the album, but "Spirit" has a special place in my heart. I was walking outdoors about 2 hours ago, and the song just sprung to mind. It's a wonderful song, especially for someone like me, an astronomer.
But you can do it too: just walk outdoors on a dark and bright night and look UP. Andromeda is there, and Vega lights our way... And there are those smoke rings in the galaxy (nebulae).
Now the album is at my parents place and it is very late in the night and I am longing for those songs.... Sigh

ZZZZZZZZZZZ.......2005-03-12
I've tried a few times but I just can't make it thru this CD. While I'm listening to it I find myself saying out loud "This is BORING". The story is dull, the music is dull. I got really tired of hearing "where is the love to shelter me?" The drummer sounds like he's beating on garbage cans half the time. I didn't care for his singing either, it was too whiny. I didn't think there was even 1 song I'd ever care to hear again. I can't see me ever putting this CD on again. However, a couple of other people really liked it as you can see from their reviews. I think the only people this might appeal to are really young people who haven't experienced much and think this junk is meaningful. There are HUNDREDS of MUCH better CDs than this dog.
essential WASP.......2003-12-09
This is the greatest album by WASP... anyone really familiar with their history knows this. Personal, deep, beautiful, heartwrenching, melodic, catchy, rocking, heavy... TIMELESS. What else can I say? Chances are, when you listen to this album, you just might see a bit of your own personality in it -- I know I did. And, hey, isn't that what makes music great in the first place?
THE BEST WASP ALBUM.......1999-12-16
This one goes in my TOP 5 top-to-bottom all-time favorite albums along with: Judas Priest-Screaming For Vengeance, Iron Maiden-Somewhere In Time, Pretty Maids-Future World, Def Leppard-High'n'Dry. I own well over 1000 cds, so these 5 must be special.
A masterpiece of rock!.......1999-09-26
The Crimson Idol is special in more than just the obvious sence as the songs have been written so that the listener is able to relate to them in some way, Blackie has written them from different perspectives so that everyone's experiance of 'The Crimson Idol' is unique. That truely takes a certain amount of genius!
What a masterpiece!!!.......1999-09-16
This album shows the true musical genius that is Blackie Lawless. If you are into Hard Rock/Metal music, YOU MUST OWN THIS CD!!!....This thing is wild and beautiful at the same time...It sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. ***** isn't enough to rate it....GET IT!!!

Bluesy, slick, emotional, pure class.......2005-06-21
Randy's music is always a very evocative and personal experience for me. This album in particular reminds me of being a kid in the very early eighties and the relationships in my family - my mum used to play these tracks non-stop. I say this because it's really what this type of album is about - it's a song cycle of beautiful, but lonely, heartbroken themes, tempered by Randy's defiant sense of soul and pride. This album will make you smile and cry. The musicianship is very reminiscent of the post Steely Dan L.A. session scene from late 70's/early 80's. Think Quincy Jones/George Benson from that era. For me, the playing is a little more bluesy and genuine than a lot of the hit machine stuff played by the same muso's (ie Thriller). A few of the band are also members of Toto to give you some flavour of how it sounds. But make no mistake, Randy is the focus and the band perfectly complement her incredibly warm vocalising. If you've ever heard Randy live, you'll understand that her voice is SO perfect you can't quite believe it's real. Combine that with her gorgeous sense of spirit, and this is really music to treasure. There are no duds on this very soulful, pop-savvy record. I have a definite soft spot for 'This Night Won't Last Forever' and 'One Hello'. I love the self affirming 'Look Who's Lonely Now' and the lightly funked up 'We had a love so strong'. But there is so much else to enjoy here. I gave this record full marks for being right up there with the best of it's kind. If you like this, you will also enjoy Secret Combination, Nightline and Abstract Emotions.
Great Listening.......2004-03-18
This album is som much like what Al Jarreau does when he goes from jazz to pop. This is Randy doing her touch on pop tunes with so much flavor and tatse that I can listen to this one forever. I thas such a different feel from my other Randy Favorite- "Raw Silk" (I have EVERY Randy recording) that if her voice weren't so distinctive you would think they were different people! Yet she has such beautiful delviery and dynamics, song selection- She is one of very few artists that I buy totally unheard out of the box- and phrasing that I cannot prase her enough. Randy is one of the most underrated and underappreciated singers of our time.
"One Hello" is my personal favorite from here but ALL are great!
My 1st Randy Crawford Album!.......2003-05-27
I bought this album when it first came out and here I am some twenty years later looking to find some more wonderful and fascinating albums by her. I just heard "One Day I'll Fly Away" (from a different album) for the 1st time and was amazed all over again and that's what prompted my search.
Randy Crawford is one of my All-Time Favorite vocalists and I do own her many of her albums such as "Nightline", "Abstract Emotions" & "Every Kind of Mood" (which I submitted a review for some time ago). As I was searching I just couldn't believe no one has ever reviewed this great album! It's still my favorite album ever.
This is an outstanding album from start to finish. Satisfying and lush with excellent production values with a little bit of something for everyone. The title track is lilting and soothing and always makes me think of warm breezes while on vacation. No duds on this one...so check it out!

Step Back in Time!.......2003-08-27
In preparing for a recent long drive in my car, I began assembling some cd's that I hadn't listened to in a while. This was one of them.
It remained untouched until the return trip, and when it finally made it into the cd player, it remained for the rest of the trip and is still there three days later.
What a marvelous representation of what must have been a terific show. From the first song, "Wait" (Wait 'til We Get Home - from the first album), to the last, a rendition of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane", this is a raucous, thoughtful, sweet, and uplifting concert. My only wish is that I had actually been there.
Great stuff and perfect for a road trip!!

Sadly underrated band who scream originality.......1999-09-20
Although this live recording doesn't do as much justice as it could (ever heard that before?), Lone Star were a superb band who achieved power, imagry and emotion on both their albums, 'Lone Sar' and 'Firing on all six' and most of this is in evidence on 'In Concert'. They did unfortunately occur at a time where fashion ignored them but as we become more retrospective by the generation, perhaps they will now be recognised as a band that could have developed to champion the heavy rock genre as others fell by the wayside. To hear is to believe and this reviewer strongly recommends that you do both, not least to the studio albums - they certainly rest in my top ten.

Customer Reviews:
A modern masterpiece.......2005-07-12
This is an absolutely luminous piece of music, living up to the name Jarrett gave it. Hard to believe anyone could think it dark. Like most serious modern music, it reflects the human condition in our age, and that means moments of tension and anguish. Indeed one could say that one of the great themes of Jarrett's music is the resolution of such anguish -- crossing the "personal mountains" in each human life.
But the overal experience of these pieces is of sublime beauty. Jan Garbarek is the perfect soloist for this sonata-like composition, an artist who produces one of the most beautiful sounds in modern jazz.
Luminessence isn't easy listening jazz. It might be better to approach it via the path of modern classical music than via any popular tradition. It is serious, heavenly music that needs to be respected. In return, it will reward the listener with intense pleasure.
Cannot be recommended too highly.
An interesting, if curmudgeon, release........2001-08-29
This is a very interesting album; the first of Jarrett's self-composed classical/new-age work. Whilst Jarrett doesn't actually play, the musical landscapes he creates with the stings sets up a conflict with Jan's saxaphone improvisation. Jan plays with, against and inbetween the landscapes in what results as a very cerebral and contemplative effort on behalf of all parties. The three selections range from the sorrowful to downright angry and occasionally show some glimpses of happy major; throughout, however, this album is searching, dark and dreary (albeit doing a wonderful job of being dark and dreary). The soundscapes created seem alien and oblique, punctuated by Jan's equally crystalline, stark tone and contemporary improvistations. If you are a fan of Jarrett and have his more articulated orchestral works, such as Arbour Zena, Celestial Hawk or Bridge of Light, give this one a try. If you are new to Jarrett and/or his orchestral/classical works, try one of the afformentioned before biting in to this one. As far as Jan Garbarek's improvisations go, they aren't his absolute best (Officium, a Garbarek/Hillard Ensemble release, is his best improvisation over classical meanderings), but - as usual - are very original, inspired, and often lift the accompanying strings from musical adequacy into greatness. This is not Jazz; its not really classical music either. It's experimental, and though not completely succesful, it does provide for a good listen and a good think.
Purely experiemental... and misses........2001-05-29
An experiemental effort to push the fusion limits, but it falls flat. Some virtuosity is evident, but Keith fails to pull it together. The result is a somewhat sour and confused orchestral rambling that tantalizes briefly in spots, but fails to deliver or even enlighten.
Another Jarrett must have........2000-07-13
Keith Jarett has written and performed for quite a number of different formats. Large scale solo improvisation, short precise piano gems, music for his American Quartet and his Scandinavian Quartet, Trio music, Symphonic works and Duo work with Jack Dejohnette etc... On Luminesscence, one of a number of must recordings of his, Jarrett writes parts for Mladen Gutesha and the Strings of the Sudfunk Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart. Jan Garbarek improvises to these string parts. The result, sweeping , contrasting strings with Garbarek's searing and sometimes bittersweet tenor and soprano playing is very special, very emotional music making. A must for anyone interested in Jarrett, in Garbarek, or in modern music making. If you like this you may also want to pick up Jarrett's In the Cave in the Light and Arbour Zena.
