Old music, fun listening........2007-02-11

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

I am enjoying this CD, though I hadn't expected the recordings to be so old. The sound quality is good, nevertheless. Good choice for a ragtime fan.

I, too, grew up listening to an old castte tape of this recording. I have been looking for the cd for many years. Why didn't I look for it at Amazon before ?!

This is a recording that makes any moment a pleasant and joyful time. You will never stop listening to it for years and still enjoy every track as the first time. It is so light... You will also enjoy the charming sound of each instrument, and you'll shurely discover a whole new aproach to Joplin's music as a band, rather than the original piano. Of course, the piano versions stand for themselves, but the deep bass lines, the charming flutes, the rithm of drums, you could almost belive it could have originally been written for a band.

A must for anyone who apreciates Ragtime.......2000-01-07

Anyone who apreciates the Ragtime music of Scott Joplin should own a copy of the New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. I grew up listening to an old cassette recording of the Ensemble and was so excited to find that a CD was still available. It is wonderful and exciting to hear Ragtime played by an entire enseble of instuments, rather than just a piano. Once again, a must for any lover of Ragtime.

Some wonderful pieces in this collection.......1999-10-02

Two words..."Bink's Waltz" worth the price of admission here. While an entire CD of these songs begins to feel strident, this music is very evocative--a brave wash of gaiety over sadness. A good addition to any collection of "American" music. Hope the Ragtime Conservatory records more. J. Makil

Great album!
I just sat back,closed my eyes,and relived great memories of these great serials that I saw as a kid.The music is so accurate
that it could have been lifted from the films instead of re-creations.I reccomend it highly!

I've been a huge fan of Republic Pictures serials for many years and was thrilled to discover this collection. James King and the CinemaSound Orchestra have captured the pulse pounding tempo of those classic Republic Serials perfectly!!! The music brought back fond memories of watching Commando Cody (The Rocket-Man), the Masked Marvel and all the rest. If you are a Republic Serial fan or just love great motion picture music, this CD is a must have for your collection.

RED LEAF could easily be described as bluegrass for the adult contemporary set, with Becky's angelic Alison Krauss-like voice rising above her band's skillful picking.

The first track, "Alabama Sun" is a heartbreaking memoir of a farmer so elderly that no one in his hometown even remembers him. "Little Janie," about a mother who kills her daughter during a flu epidemic, is as morbid as a bluegrass song can get. Becky's songs run the gamut from personal and heart-achey to sweet and homey.

RED LEAF was recorded at the renowned MasterMix studios in Minnesota. It features the talents of acoustic luminaries Peter Ostroushko, Marc Anderson, and John Niemann.

The new Alison Krauss?.......2003-12-02

This is an enjoyable recording of very pretty almost-bluegrass songs, all written by the singer with the Alison Krauss-like voice, Becky Schlegel. The lyrics are generally passable but unremarkable, with subjects ranging from sappy love songs - and her sweet voice goes well with these - to the joy of country life. On occasion they're remarkably touching ("Red Leaf") or remarkably annoying ("Sister Sam", which seems to be written from the point of view of someone who approves of the petty conflicts often arising between siblings about who's the favorite or who's not doing their share of taking care of the aging parents). But you wouldn't buy this for the lyrics; it's the gorgeous sound that takes liberties with traditional bluegrass, either by being more spare or by occasionally adding a forbidden instrument like an electric or pedal steel guitar. All in all, while comparisons with Alison Krauss are inevitable, and to my taste Ms. Schlegel is a tiny notch below Ms. Krauss as a vocalist, this is an enjoyable CD that should appeal to fans of modern bluegrass. If you like Alison Krauss, it's certainly worth a listen.

Must be better live.......2004-11-24

It's quite apparent that the Rebirth Brass Band knows how to jam. The energy, the excitement...it's all there in the album; you can tell these guys are having as much fun as their audience. But this album is just awful for two reasons: 1) The recording is bad. 2) The musicianship displayed is NOT top-quality.

The recording levels, combined with the proximity of a snare drum add a constant buzz to the sound--particularly the sousaphone--that will drive you nuts! I want to hear a powerful, booming rhythm section, but fuzzy sound just sucks the enjoyment right out of what is obviously a jumping set.

The CD is fun, and it's obvious everyone is having a blast, but don't hope much for a good sound or brilliant technical artistry. This is a party band. Their attacks are shaky, their intonation suspect, and their abilities obviously not at acme during the session. Solos are repetitive and unmusical. Musical dynamics are all triple-f. The band loves to scream hip-hop rhymes and catchphrases during lulls and between tunes--rap-stuff like the ubiquitous "now somebody scream!" Poor sound feedback at the venue? Too much drinking? Who knows? The CD becomes one long, monotonous, atonal mass of squawking brass and silly audience-prodding. It all adds up to something resembling a drunken pep-rally.

I had very high hopes for this CD, and I still hold out some hope for the band. I love Dixieland. I love brass. I didn't love this album, and that really, really disappoints me.

Almost as Good as Being There.......2002-01-30

This is a great CD - a must have! The only better is seeing Rebirth play live at the Maple Leaf on Tuesday nights - a true NOLA tradition - eat next door at Jacque-IMOs to make it a perfect night of NOLA food and awesome NOLA music!

Rebirth Represents! ! !.......2000-01-25

Great live sounds from a great brass band. It's fun ... classic jazz brass kickin' it live with a bit (too much) flava at times. A whole lotta kick-as* horns in your face. It'll make you feel like you're dancing with the band at The Leaf. Gave it 4/5 because there's a bit too much singin' on a few tunes.

Reliving the experience..........2000-01-06

I was in New Orleans last week, and just happened to stumble across Rebirth in the Maple Leaf! Can you believe that a brass band can jam a jazz-like improvisation for 20 minutes? Rebirth can, and it's hypnotizing! Who would've guessed that a snare drum and a sousaphone could produce such a powerful rythym section... If you have a hunger for live music, then this CD is for you.

The ressurgence of brass band music in New Orleans, a tradition deep-rooted in the culture of the city, came about with the Dirty Dozen. However, ReBirth has picked up where the Dozen left off and this album is the proof.
