About the Artist
If you can truly judge someone by the company he keeps, you can tell Stewart MacDougall commands a lot of respect from his peers. Proof can be found on the back cover of his second solo disc, Heresay, which was released Thursday Nov. 28, 2001. The first song on the album, Away I Will Be, was co-written with singer/songwriter Michael Shellard, formerly of One Horse Blue. Other names of note dot the credits, too. MacDougall combines with Ian Tyson on the superb If Memory Serves Me and another song, Stubborn Case, is a collaboration with Billy Cowsill. Not that MacDougall has ever needed much help in creating stunning melodies and lyrics full of finely etched images. His songs can be found on discs by Tyson, Randy Travis, k. d. lang and a group he co-led in the early '90s, The Great Western Orchestra.

Product Description
Heresay co-producer Colin Lay, a respected engineer and producer who previously worked with MacDougall on solo projects and GWO albums, knows the artist's strengths as well as anyone. "I think we final1y captured Stewart's superb voice on this album. It's relaxed, up-front and the power of his instrument is there," 1 said. Once again a talented supporting cast contributes effective and unique parts to the songs, including two from the GWO back catalogue: Down Along The Livingstone (written by Sid Marty) and Buffalo Ground.

5 out of 5 stars WOOOOOW!.......2006-03-01

This album is.......I can`t find the words! I got it yesterday and I am impressed. It would be foolish to try to describe this music with words. It is a mystery to me why WINDHAM HILL no longer has it in print! :)

5 out of 5 stars McCandless' Best Solo outing.......2005-04-20

Sadly out of print, this could be (to my ears) McCandles' very best solo recording (apart from his usual group, Oregon).
The music has a very cinematic, panoramic quality to it-as though some of it were written as a soundtrack to a film with allot of ariel scenes of landscapes.
It's not like Paul's usual smaller group more intimate outings. This one is almost orchestral with excellent use of synthesizers and other horn players.
Musicians who appear on this are Trilok Gurtu (hand percussion), Paul on Oboe, English Horn, Synthesizers, and Saxophones and several other wind instruments, Paul's old friend and collaborator (and excellent pianist) Art Lande (Piano) Steve Rodby (Upright Bass) as well as 2 other horn players and a couple of additional musicians helping out on sampled percussion, additional synthesizers and programming. A fairly larger group than McCandless usually works with, but the final results prove that Paul indeed had a master plan for this recording. He certainly was inspired when he wrote and recorded this one back around 1988.
Gurtu's use of percussion in particular is simply perfect-no normal drum kit could do justice to this music, it would simply be too heavy-handed.
Lets hope Windham Hill records (or someone) puts this one back in print .
This one should really have been on ECM records..THEY probably would have left it in print at least (and it SOUNDS like an ECM recording, anyway...)
