This wonderful five-disc box is an indispensable collection of prewar, prebop jazz that belongs in the company of your finest Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman sets. Technically, this isn't a true box set--it merely collects five single-disc compilations under one slipcase--but it is infinitely rewarding nonetheless. Disheartened by what he thought were sonically subpar Reinhardt collections, Ted Kendall undertook an ambitious mission to find the best original sources for this classic material and then meticulously remastered them. He wisely opted to leave in some of the surface noise to maintain the clarity and integrity of the music. And what glorious, jubilant music it is! Dating to the very first Quintet of the Hot Club of France sessions in September 1934 (before they'd even established that moniker), the collection includes all the landmark recordings Reinhardt made for Ultraphone, Decca (its English and French labels), and HMV up through the Quintet's 1939 breakup on the eve of World War II. Reinhardt's guitar work is spirited and adventurous throughout--lightning-quick runs, insistent rhythm work, and hybrid "riffs" that seem to split the difference. Nearly all the cuts feature the elegant but vivacious violin work of his most famous foil, Stephane Grappelli, who certainly deserves co-billing on the set. The way the two feed off each other's energy is magical. Despite their well-documented personality clashes, the twosome remains perhaps the most synergistic in jazz history, constantly engaging in their incredible cat-and-mouse games. Often overlooked are the songwriting talents of the two musicians, who contributed several standards to the jazz canon. Though mostly focused on the Quintet recordings, the set detours for such oddities as a pair of solo Reinhardt cuts from 1937 and collaborations with Coleman Hawkins. Simply delightful from beginning to end. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful - for the Purists among us.......2007-07-02
Django Reinhardt's music is a study in Jazz influence, improvisation and sheer exuberance. These recordings take you through his early years and maturity as an astonishing guitarist. If you understand guitar and what it took for him to play as he did, your appreciation for the technical virtuosity cannot but respond to his work.
The digital re-masterings themselves faithfully reproduce the original sounds, complete with all of the surface noise that attended those early 78's. For the purist this is no problem because the desire is to not have any of the music also filtered. For those who are into casual listening or background music while you drive, especially if you listen at high volume, you might find it a bit distracting.
One of the most delightful aspects of Reinhardt's group is Stephan Grappely's Jazz violin. We don't think of the violin as a jazz instrument very often, but these folks made it work wonderfully in group. Reinhardt shared the lead often with his band and it gives the music a diversity which enables sustained listening without boredom.
Good group, good selections, good music.
Django Reinhardt , Classic Early Recordings.......2007-04-12
Like the Supreme Court Justice opined about obscenity [I'm informed],
he said if he saw it he would know what it was. I have sonically seen
Django and I know what JAZZ GENIUS IS!! He and his consorts swing from
the beginning to the end every time they do a tune. Being an un-recon-
structed Stan Kenton fan of some 60 + years, I recognize that except
for some Shorty Rogers charts and particularly "Stompin' At The Savoy"
by Bill Holman, Django could have made even the Kenton band swing! How
he could swing so hard with a wounded wing is an education. If you dig
jazz or think you might, this is the ONE to buy.
Tout Sweet.......2007-01-08
Imagine yourself luxuriously pouring time down the drain in some obscure cafe, contemplating the crumbling Parisian skyline through an absinthe-induced fog, puffing on a Gauloise sans filtre securely plugged into an ivory cigarette holder. At the adjoining table a taciturn J.P. Sartre is cheating at solitaire. Out back, on the cobblestone street worn smooth by centuries of horse hooves, Gertrude Stein is rebuilding the transmission of an American Jeep. This is your sound track.
The Classic Early Recordings of Django Reinhardt is one of the best deals in the entire Amazon jungle. From sound quality to song selection to sheer quantity, this superb 5-CD set recreates a whole environment; it transports you to another place and time. Perhaps the only flaw is that Stephane Grappelly does not get equal billing - the real magic of this music is found in the interplay between these two giants.
It is tempting to say that Reinhardt was the Hendrix of his generation; it is perhaps more accurate to say that Hendrix was the Reinhardt of his generation. Django Reinhardt, (believed by some to be the best guitarist ever), belongs in the same pantheon with Art Tatum and Charlie Parker - he exhibited almost Faustian brilliance, worlds beyond other players. Green bananas are advised to remember that everything Reinhardt played - he actually played - these recordings were made long before technology took the place of talent.
Reinhardt's style is extremely athletic, he strums as if he is trying to rip the strings off. Lightning-quick riffs are tossed off almost thoughtlessly, creating a vibrant, racing energy. Grappelly's elegant, lyrical violin is the perfect counterpoint, where Reinhardt drives, Grappelly soars. As staggeringly fast as Reinhardt is, Grappelly never strains to keep up, his work here establishes him as heavyweight champ of jazz violin. This music is relentlessly joyful, upbeat, and sweet. While it is always possible to analyze it for sheer technical virtuosity, the temptation to fall under its magical spell is far greater. Absolutely enchanting.
Guitarist Supreme-Django Reinhardt.......2006-08-20
This is a first for us to hear Django play guitar.A simply wonderful set of his recordings. We love his way of playing. So expressive and uplifting and up to date.He is very accomplished musician. "Ted Kendall" (sound engineer) did a fine job of restoring of original recordings. The CD and case like new. Arrived on time. Seller highly recommended!
if you have the mosaic and you're wondering..........2006-05-05
it may have been pointed out another reviewer, but:
if you have the mosaic swing/hmv set and you're concerned about overlap, go ahead and get this set. there's only about a disc and a half of overlap. 3 1/2 hours' worth of non-duplicates, of sessions which preceded those in the mosaic and, even better, the complete paris and london decca sides from '38-39. restoration-wise, these are a little noisier than the mosaic, but also sweeter top end. different approach, i like both. pure joy.

It's difficult to pinpoint the most phenomenal detail of the Mills Brothers' five-CD 1930s Recordings. Is it the audio? The unbelievable genius of the Mills family from Piqua, Ohio? The tune selection? Rest assured that you get gobs of genius from this set--in performance, in audio quality, in scope of music. In terms of sound, John R.T. Davies, whose work on the Louis Armstrong Hot Fives and Sevens JSP 4-CD set makes that set the premier Satchmo set, remastered these 116 tracks meticulously. In terms of music, the package's scope comprises virtually all the Mills Brothers' great early hits, from 1931's "Tiger Rag" and "Dinah" (a duet with Bing Crosby) to 1932's "Bugle Call Rag" and Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," and more than 100 other cuts recorded between 1931 and 1937.
The Mills Brothers were originally billed as "Four Boys and a Guitar," and their utterly unique sound shines under Davies's light, with the bass thump of oldest brother John resonating deeply beneath Harry (baritone), Herbert (tenor), and Donald (lead). They mimic horns beautifully, so much so that when real orchestras back them, it sounds richer but also more tricky--where does Cab Calloway's band kick in on 1932's "Doin' the New Low Down" and where do the mock horns end? Ditto for the mesmerizing mix of Louis Armstrong and the brothers on 1938's "My Walking Stick," where Herbert's trumpet squares up beautifully with Satchmo's. They were still unassailable even in the late 1930s, and the last volume here catches the Mills Brothers as their popularity was waning. Perhaps it was the advancing power of swing big bands as the Depression eased, or perhaps their material was becoming tiresome. Whatever the cause, the Millses' approach begins to sound more like standard pop-cultural fare on "My Little Grass Shack in Kealakekua, Hawaii," but they hadn't even come close to the height of their enormous fame--that would come with 1943's "Paper Doll," 1952's "Glow Worm," and an overall impression that the Mills Brothers were an institution. Here you get what came before, sometimes simple exuberant talent taking on silly little ditties, and sometimes inspired brilliance adorned only by a nice ditty and flabbergasting vocal chops. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
a little goes a long way.......2007-06-26
I am a big Mills Brothers fan and thought I just couldn't live without this 5-disc set of their earliest recordings. Frankly, I've become bored. The producer decided every recording, in chronological order, even those recorded twice, three times, even four, should all be included. I've struggled to listen all the way through, and am still working at it; after all, I paid $60 bucks for this set. At the same time I purchased THE ANTHOLOGY (1931 to 1968) which is nothing short of delightful. That's the one I recommend!
Outstanding!.......2005-05-10
What a great collection of music! I knew very little about the Mills Brothers prior to buying this set, and pretty much found this item by accident (you know how it is on Amazon). But I have purchased JSP sets before, and was familiar with their high quality and value. So I took a chance on the Mills Brothers, and since getting these I've listened to the set over and over, I never seem to get tired of it. Yeah, a few of the songs are repeated now and then, but it's all good. I have to say that this is one of the best music purchases I've ever made. I'm just glad that CD's don't wear out.
Boyoboyoboyoboyoboyo!.......2003-02-20
JSP has done it again! I'm a big fan of their CD box sets--I've got the Jelly Roll Morton set, the Louis Armstrong set, and the Carter Family set. They're all excellent! This one is no exception. The remastering is by John R. T. Davies, so naturally, the sound is superb. From the earliest 1931 recordings through the 1938 sessions here, the recordings are crisp, clear, and rich-sounding. Each piece is a gem. The Mills Brothers voices blend so smoothly together, I could listen to their records for hours. And with this 5-disc box set I *can* listen for hours! Each disc is packed full, and I appreciate having the alternate takes. Occasioanlly on these discs, the Mills Brothers are joined by Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Alice Faye, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Dick Powell, and a few others. The liner notes are good, and for five CD's, you can't beat the price. My only complaint--and it's a small one--is while the recording dates and master numbers for all selections are given, no indication is made of the original record labels or numbers.
A Ton of Music for Very Little Money.......2000-11-28
My reason for not giving this five stars is due to the large number of alternate recordings of duplicate songs, but this is really due to the utterly documentarian approach the folks that put this CD together followed. Every single recording from the Mills Brothers earliest years are here (in stunningly good sound), presented in chronological order, which means that the listener is subjected to multiple recordings of "Caravan" and others. If you are a Mills Brothers fanatic (as I am), this is an indispensable set to own. If you are a more casual fan, pick up one of the greatest hits CD's listed here.

Great compilation, that's not just the usual stuff........2002-05-01
I've owned a number of the song-books for years, and love them. If you want something more, or different, though, it's hard to sort through all the other albums out there. I think this collection gives a great overview of her other work, especially the early stuff. All of the performances are good, although one or two of the songs are duds (like the sequel to "A Tisket A Tasket"). A number of the tracks feature the "Ink Spots" and Louis Jordan as well. With 50 tracks there's a lot here for any taste. For my money, this was a great buy.

Customer Reviews:
what a comeback!.......2007-04-14
I have also been a fan of REO Speedwagon for many many years. But as a fan, I don't just blindly say that everything the band records is better than the last thing they did.
However, this is! This CD is something special. There was a lot of potential for this to not live up to the likes of Hi Infidelity or the Tuna record. It is hard to top those. But REO fan aside, I do believe this does. There is a crafty mix of rockin tunes (Smilin' in the end, Everything you feel) to slower power ballads (I needed to fall, Find your own way home) to name a couple.
"Everything you feel" sounds like a lost late 70s REO song, with a fresh new edge to me. Listening to it makes you feel like you're on an amusement park ride and when it's over, you get off the ride with a feeling of "Wow, that was fun!"
The CD takes the listener on a journey from the first to the last song. Like reading a good book. I absolutely love it and cannot stop listening to it. If this does not get radio play, then I will have lost the little bit of faith I have left in the radio station production business, or whoever is responsible for what gets air time and what doesn't.
If you are a REO fan you will love this. If not, you will become one after a listen.
Not to mention the extra two CDs. The unplugged XM radio concert DVD and the Hi Infidelity live then again recording as a bonus. However, the true gem is the brand new CD "Find your own way home".
Music Fans Couldn't Ask For More!.......2007-04-12
As a long time REO fan, I was beginning to think that maybe their recording days were over. It had been 11 years since Building the Bridge came out. I really liked that album, but it seemed like they were still trying to find their sound. NOT with this album! REO is back with a vengeance, as evidenced by harder edged tracks such as "Smilin' in the End". This whole album is very worthy of getting major airplay. Of course, REO are known for their polished ballads, and there are plenty of those as well... "I Needed to Fall", "Everything You Feel", and "Let My Love Find You" stand up well to any classic REO songs. Plus, with this box set, the band practically gives away a new live recording of the whole classic Hi-Infidelity album, with the current lineup, as well as an unplugged DVD- XM Artist Confidential! REO has always gone above and Beyond for their fans, and this project is no exception. If you can't find the box set, because they were only sold at Wal-Mart in limited numbers, I would HIGHLY encourage you to buy the single cd. Like I said, I have been a lifelong REO fan, but I am not talking just as a fan here. This is a bonafide hit album... or at least it deserves to be. If you're a music fan, it should be in your collection. It would be a shame if this doesn't get the praise it deserves!
