George Strait's first three greatest-hits albums (now made redundant by the four-disc Strait Out of the Box) collected essential examples of contemporary country music. In his finest singles, Strait seemed to resolve, both commercially and artistically, the tensions between hardcore twang and New Country pop. His 2000 best-of set, however, documents Strait's decline. Oh, the radio play has continued unabated--12 of the 15 tracks here made the country Top 10--but emotionally it is a sad and tedious tumble from the Cajun stomp of 1994's "Adalida" and the deliberate self-deceptions of 1996's "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" to pop-rock successes like 1998's catchy but insipid "True." The two new tracks leave the future as anybody's guess: "Murder on Music Row," a duet with Alan Jackson, pledges allegiance to tradition (both in message and execution), but "The Best Day" is devoid of any of the adult ambiguity, previously a Strait staple, that would grant it poignancy. --David Cantwell

5 out of 5 stars The mid-nineties hits.......2005-06-11

The album picks up George's career where the boxed set (Strait out of the box) ends, so it covers the period from 1994 to 1998. It shows that George's style was evolving but still firmly rooted in traditional country music.

The album opens with two songs specially recorded for the album, the first (The best day) being an excellent ballad. The second song (Murder on music row) was first written and recorded by Larry Cordle, a bluegrass performer. Here, George sings it as a duet with Alan Jackson. George rarely sings duets but although there is no obvious reason for this particular song to be a duet, George and Alan clearly enjoyed recording this song. While both George and Alan have made some concessions to the requirements of the contemporary market place, they have both managed to be hugely successful with music that is much closer to traditional country music than most of the music recorded in Nashville these days.

The remaining tracks are taken from just four albums, these being Lead on (Adalida, Lead on, You can't make a heart love somebody), Blue clear sky (the title track, Carried away, I can still make it to Cheyenne, King of the mountain), Carrying your love with me (the title track, Round about way, One night at a time, Today my word slipped away) and One step at a time (True, We really shouldn't be doing this). Of these songs, Today my world slipped away is a cover of a Vern Gosdin country hit but the others (as far as I know) are original songs.

Picking out highlights in such a strong collection is difficult, but I'll nominate Murder on Music Row, Adalida, Blue clear sky and King of the mountain. If you are new to George's music, this compilation makes a great introduction.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest of the Greatest.......2005-02-22

I am a huge country music fan and this is one of five CDs I would choose to have with me if I were stranded on a desert isle. I loved this CD. It has all of George Strait's most recent hits as well as two new songs - 'The Best Day', which is another in a string of fantastic father-son songs that Strait has done (starting with Love without End, Amen). The second new song is Murder on Music Row with Alan Jackson. It took me some time to warm up to this one, and its a strident defense against New Country.

So it should come as no surprise that the rest of the CD is all done in an old country style. My personal favorite is I Can Still Make Cheyenne, which is one of the best (and most depressing) songs I've ever heard. This CD does not contain any of the really classic Strait stuff like All My Exes Live in Texas, and anyone who is interested in Strait should really start with his true golden age. But if you have any tolerance at all for steel guitars and songs about people cheating, drinking, and dying, then you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars the most beautiful song i'v ever heard.......2003-11-30

when i firt heard this song i really liked it .he'z cute too.xo

5 out of 5 stars excellent!.......2003-03-16

You can't go wrong with this purchase. If you want some of the best songs George has done over the last few years, this CD puts them all in one spot. I enjoy every song on this album and would recommend it to anyone who is a die-hard GS fan or is just getting into country music. George Strait is THE MAN!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST HITS ALBUM EVER!.......2002-10-27

This is my favorite cd I own, and the Road Less Traveled cd is #2. My favorite song EVER is "Blue Clear Sky" with the lyrics and the catchy music, I heard it when I was like 8 years old and I actually knew the lyrics to the song!Bob DiPiero has written so many great hit songs, but this one is the best!

"True" is another great song! The lyrics again are mastered and the music is terrific!

"Best Day" is another Father/Son Song penned by GS and tells about the son's life with fishin'/drivin'/ and gettin' married'.
Things I wish I did more often with my far away dad.

"Murder On Music Row" is one of the most inspiring song I ever heard. I always said that many country artists have turned to the pop charts and murdered country music on murder row! This song tells how someone committed murder to country music and we're not really sure who did it. This song is a traditional country song with the use of the STEEL GUITAR and the FIDDLE.
I love how Strait and Alan Jackson attack this ongoing problem.
Leeann Womack does great on the vocals!

"Carrying You Love with Me" is a classic!

"Adalida" is a upbeat Cajun melody with unforgettable singin' by George.
"Lead On" tells a story of how people lead you on, pretending like they love you.
"Carried Away" is a great song with unbeattable music!
"We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This" shows the Elvis in Strait's voice and a great song also.
"I Can Still Make Cheyenne" is a great story of a Rodeo Cowboy who is always gone so his grilfriend is going to leave him but he says he'll leave right now and speed to Wyoming.
I like "King Of The Mountain". It has a very classic traditional country sound and is very catchy.
"Round About way" is a very underreated song with an uptempo music sound in it.
"You Can't Make A Heart Love Somebody" has very memorable lyrics and is a song that contradicts other propasal song by saying 'No' to the 'Will you marry me?'

"One Night At a Time" isn't my favorite but has very catchy music and words
"Today My World Slipped Away" is okay, definitely not my favorite, I find it too slow but you may enjoy it.

These are the reasons why you should by this GREAT CD! It Has Strait's latest hits but sadly doesn't include the
#1 hit "I Just Want To Dance with You"
Strait will ALWAYS be the all time greatest country KING of country music, who has stayed country throughout his career!

1 out of 5 stars Before You Buy.......2006-03-19

When I first bought this Great White compilation, my only reason to get this was because I wanted to up my update from "Best Of Great White : 1986-1992". I liked the idea that "Mista Bone", "Lady Red Light" and at the time from their new '99 album "Rollin' Stoned" were on this compilation. Well after i bought it, I soon realized that all of the old tracks were remixed (re-recorded for that matter), not just the drums, the guitars, the keyboards, the bass guitar and yes even the singing. Just stick to older best of comps and the albums. Great White pulled a fast one on me. The first example, listen to the drumming, it doesn't have a 80's bassy drum snare sound to it anymore. The sound is not digitally remastered, the reason why it sounds so clear like some mentioned before, well it's called re-recording, and for laughs let's package it like "best of". Whatever!

5 out of 5 stars great collection from an underrated band!.......2005-09-22

if you have a metal/hard rock collection, this is worth your salt to get. standout tracks are "Rock Me", Once Bitten, Twice Shy", and "The Angel Song", but the whole thing rocks as well. it is too bad that Great White is an underrated band, because they covered a big hit.

2 out of 5 stars Correction to the March 2nd 2002 review.......2004-02-10

Rollin' Stoned isn't new for this album. It was on 1999's Can't Get There from Here.

I don't really understand the point of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great White Brings It At You.......2002-03-03

This is one of 4 greatest hits albums of Great White that I know of and own. It is one of the best and a must have for all rock lovers. There is one new song called "Rollin' Stoned" that just rocks the house. It definately gets you ready to see a show by pumping you up. That song is worth the cost of the album alone. Although there are some other excellent tracks that are not on the other greatest hits albums. Two that stand out are "Lady Red Light" and "Can't Shake It". Other songs are modern versions of all their older stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Richie's Build'in Houses, Bill's the President.......2001-04-25

"Rollin Stoned" could have been the theme song of the Clinton presidency, if only this group could have gotten itself played at times other than 3:00 a.m. when even Bill was probably passed out, or too distracted on the phone. It's a hauntingly accurate reprise of the 1970's--that formative phase of things in Arkansas. I'm disconcerted that this band was apparently left out of the "Joe Dirt" soundtrack. Go figure.

4 out of 5 stars ARS.......2007-07-05

i DIDN'T REALLY CARE FOR THIS CD AT FIRST BUT AFTER SEVERAL LISTENINGS, IT GREW ON ME. I LIKE THE LIVE STUFF AND THE OLD ARS CLASSICS. SOME OF THE COVERS DON'T APPEAL TO ME, BUT I DO LIKE "CALL ME THE BREEZE," AND THE ZZ TOP SONGS.I THINK THESE YOUNGER PLAYERS ADD A LITTLE LIFE TO THE OLD MUSIC.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-06-05

I agree completely with the previous reviewer. Unfortunately, I ordered prior to that review being posted. This is not Ronnie Hammond and the original ARS...it may as well be a new band performing covers of their tunes. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Not the original ARS.......2007-05-21

Being an ARS fan from back in the day, I was interested in seeing how this was---sadly, I was disappointed. With only one original member on board (Dean Daughtry on keys), this is just basically their biggest songs rehashed (with no improvement over the originals) and some poorly chosen covers. The packaging was done in a way to mimic the ARS "Greatest Hits" album down to the logo and colors (probably to try and get some poor sap to buy it by mistake). While the songs are competently performed, the newer production leaves a lot to be desired---it sounds way too polished and doesn't have the vibe or groove of the originals. It's very sterile sounding. The new singer doesn't have the soulful vocals of Ronnie Hammond---he doesn't even come close. As for the cover choices I mentioned above, everything is pretty much generic sounding due to the production and lack of urgency in the performances. Thin Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" should be played with some sort of ferocity but it's effectively neutered here by the laid back shuffling approach. The ZZ Top covers "Sharp Dressed Man/Gimme All Your Lovin'" suffer a similar fate. Trotting out a tired remake of BTO's "Takin' Care Of Business" wasn't a good idea either. Nor was the horrid take on "Love Hurts". Only "Call Me The Breeze" fares ok and that shouldn't surprise anyone since it fits their genre and style but at the same time, they screw up another southern rock song, .38 Special's "Hold On Loosely". I hate to bash it being a fan of the band, but this really is horrible effort as far as continuing the ARS legacy and the "Best Of" album cover ripoff ploy only makes it look worse.

Besides an excellent name, what Average White Band has going for it is timeless, grown-up funk. The trouble with Latest & Greatest, though, is that it cinches together a myopic sample. While the disc doesn't lack for length (16 tracks) or talent (in addition to the usual lineup, Chaka Khan and Daryl Hall step in for a couple of groovy joints) or special features (a bonus DVD is included), it's limited by the era it culls, 1989 to 2003. The AWB calling card "Pick Up the Pieces," presented in a "NuJazz" but still deeply satisfying mix, perks ears as early as track two, but by the time we reach "Do Ya Really" —does anybody remember "Do Ya Really?" —we can't help wishing the door to this best-of had been propped open wider, allowing entry to such earlier AWB staples as "Cut the Cake" and "Queen of My Soul." That said, somebody involved in this disc's sequencing was onto something: Midway through, when mild dissatisfaction is about to set in, the powerful grooviness of "Oh Maceo" —lookout —comes along to save the day. There's a track to prove that when you fortify the funk, all is forgiven. --Tammy La Gorce

1 out of 5 stars Very Average White Band Album.......2005-09-06

The only song I liked was "Pick up the Pieces."
"Pick Up the Pieces" on the Kenny G Duets album with David Sanborn is a better version of this tune.

4 out of 5 stars awb - latest and greatest.......2005-09-01

heard the "work to do" cut on the radio and had to explore further - was very surprised to find the rest of the album has new stuff in addition to some remakes of their good old stuff. Allan Gorrie's voice is still strong and it cares the album - I wish Hamish was back but you can't have everything. Overall, a great buy in that it's not just another mix of old stuff AWB is still alive and well!

5 out of 5 stars It's cooool! A little bit of everything...check it out!.......2005-07-12

I love work to do & pick up the pieces...it's got a Jazzy new sound! Let's go aroung again live! among the other tunes...it's a real treat!

4 out of 5 stars Highlights Of The Later Years.......2005-05-08

What the Amazon reviewer apparently didn't recognize is that this compilation isn't meant to be a career-ranging overview. Rather, it focuses on AWB II, the years when the band re-formed after breaking up. AWB I has been the focus of at least 7 different compilations at my last count. So, that compilation has been done to death. AWB II material has been released on a variety of labels (much of it hard to find), so its helpful to have the best of that material compiled onto a single disc. For the "average" fan that isn't interested in having it all, buy the two disc "In The Beginning" and "The Greatest & Latest" and you'll have everything that you need, other than "You're My Number One" from "Cupid's In Fashion".

3 out of 5 stars The Latest & Greatest?.......2005-04-28

Overall Review

I have to admit that while I am a avid R & B, soul and especially funk fanatic there is always a special place in my musical tastes for this type of music. So, Average White Band, the guys responsible for the CLASSIC funk song "Pick Up The Pieces" fit well within that range. Their newest release, due April 19th, is Greatest and Latest. Well titled, the album is a collection of prime moments in their 16 year history along with a couple new tracks and a few unreleased live recordings. Honestly, it may be the funk leanings of my tastes, but they really seem to shine the best on the faster paced funk numbers. Still, even when the music doesn't gel as well as other times, it still works. The collection includes a bonus DVD (although my review copy did not - so I can't comment on that) and should make a great addition to the collection of AWB fans and fans of R & B and soulful funk in general.

Track by Track Review

Spirit of Love (with Chaka Khan & Ronnie Laws): With an acapella intro, this funky cut is a cool one that feels a little like The Doobie Brothers at times. It's poppy, but still has some meat to it. It has a very cool bridge and a rather electronic texture at time. This has a nice sax solo.

Pick Up the Pieces: This classic funk cut should be recognizable to everyone, and it still has it. The sax solo on this jazz inspired funk piece is exceptionally tasty.

In The Beginning (live at the Mt. Fuji Festival, Japan): A killer funk bass line starts this fast paced live jam. It includes a nice scat with the sax and the vocals following each other.

Let's Go All the Way (with Chaka Khan): This is a sultry jazzy ballad with a very cool vocal arrangement.

I'll Get Over You: This cut is rather generic with an '80's rock style. It has its moments, but is just a little too cliched.

Love at First Sight (with Alex Ligertwood): Another slower cut, this is a rather cool balladic groove.

Every Beat of My Heart (with Klyde Jones): This slow one is solid, but doesn't do much for me. Still the vocal arrangement is powerful.

When We Get Down To It: A mid tempo piece, this one has a cool groove, and is pretty potent.

Oh, Maceo (live at the Fillmore Auditorium): Another live one, horn starts this and the band join in for a killer funk grind. This jam is one of the strongest on the album.

Do Ya Really: Another killer funk groove; this also is a highlight of the collection. The horn section really smokes.

I Wanna Be Loved (featuring Daryl Hall): This is another slower cut, and quite soulful. It is better than some of the slower pieces on the album, and has a nice sax solo.

Window to Your Soul: Another slow one, this has a classic '70's R & B sound, funky and sultry. This one is very cool.

Living in Colour: With a rather Latin rhythm, this one is somewhat jazzy. It's not bad, but not the strongest material on show. The vocals are truly its saving grace.

Work to Do (Nu-Jazz Mix): Back into faster territory, this is another jazz-oriented cut. It is a fairly smooth and entertaining piece, although not a real standout.

Love Won't Let Me Wait: The slowest piece on the disc; this ballad is a bit weak.

Let's Go Round Again (live at The London Empire): Another live one, the funk lives again on this fast paced romp. This killer jam has a great arrangement, and while there are better choices for album closer, this works pretty well.

5 out of 5 stars One of BTO's top albums.......2006-02-01

Before writing anything further, it is important to note that this is NOT a 'Greatest Hits' compilation, nor is it really meant to be. This is often considered to be the group's 10th studio albums, originally recorded by the label CMC as Trial By Fire: Greatest & Latest in 1996. This reissue, released by Disky, drops Trial By Fire from the title, which apparently leads people to believe that this is a compilation. If you are looking to purchase a compilation of BTO's 1970s hits, then this is not the CD for you, as the 1970s titled included here are remakes (which the original record label apparently insisted on recording).

The ten remakes are actually quite good in my opinion, although most are not quite as good as the originals. Blue Collar, Hold Back The Water, and Gimme Your Money Please are particularly good, although many BTO fans have complained about the last of those three. RODTH, FWD, and TILAM do not seem to have the same driving force of the originals but are still good (FWD also includes part of Free Wheelin', which I liked). Not Fragile is even heavier than the original, if that is possible. The two tracks on the album that were originally sung by Randy Bachman (Hey You and YASNY) are a little difficult to get used to for some - I really liked the new version of Hey You but wasn't struck on the YASNY remake. The vocalist (Randy Murray, the newest member of the band) is very good though, and I would have liked to have heard him try some more songs.

The five new songs are the best points of this album, especially the two that were written by the group members. All five are sung by C.F. Turner. Trial By Fire and Nothin' Comes Easy are now two of my favorite BTO songs of all time (Nothin' Comes Easy is my second favorite of them all) - both sound very modern and energetic (much more so than anything on their last four albums, although I liked those too). House of the Rising Sun (a cover of the Animals' hit) was released as a single in Europe I believe, and is the best version of the song I have ever heard - it sounds just as good in concert too. Testify and A Sense of Danger are not quite as good as the other three - Testify is more lightweight pop and has unusual lyrics for a BTO song, and A Sense of Danger is more retro boogie (reminds me of Texas Cannonball by Union for some reason). Both are still pretty good though.

Anyway, if you're looking for a collection of BTO's classic hits, this is not the CD to buy. But if you're looking to expand your BTO collection with something new and have enjoyed some of their earlier work, you just may enjoy this album for what it is.

      1 out of 5 stars stinks.......2004-04-13

"roll on down the highway", is too slow. of the new tunes, you can keep "rising sun", and "nothin' comes easy" like listening to this.

who is this randy murry guy? his version of "you aint seen nothin yet", is torture, and his "hey you" is life less.

pack it in, bto, it is over for you.

2 out of 5 stars Let's call it what it really is..........2003-02-06

This is really "TO" (minus the "B", the real Bachman...sorry Robbie and Tim). Not that the CD is that bad, let's just be upfront with what it really is! These are all either re-recordings of some of BTOs greatest hits, or some of the newer stuff recorded and release sans Randy Bachman (the true force behind BTO). Must have something to do with their fights over music publication rights I guess. Now onto the music...

The C.F. (Fred) Turner stuff is nothing short of phenomenal. He has re-worked some of his classic BTO tunes...particularly well with "Blue Collar". Some re-works are nicely mixed and give the songs a fresh new sound or even a new attitude. Some of them are note for note replicas, but good ones at that.

Here's where I have a problem...please leave Randy's songs ("Aint Seen Nothing Yet" and "Hey You") for Randy! "Hey You" is Randy making his post-Guess Who break-up statement to Burton Cummings...why is it even here in the first place? This is a total disgrace having this "Randy-wanna-be" guy singing Randy's songs. It totally ruins them and ruins to me what could otherwise be a very good CD. Now don't get me wrong...I am not blinded by Randy either...he does the same thing on his "Songbook" collection, trying to replace the vocals of CF and Burton. Although his "Burton" sound-alike is actually VERY good, I don't think ANYONE could possibly imitate the gruffy vocal so C.F. Turner and get away with it successfully!

I'm looking forward to more in this continuing BTO-Bachman-Guess Who saga...

        4 out of 5 stars Greatest & Latest.......2000-08-06

It's great to see one of the best party bands coming out with a CD of their greatest hits with a few newer songs. This CD comes packed with some of the great beer drinking songs from "Blackout In The Redroom" along with at least one song from Love/Hate's next three releases. If You think these songs are the orginals burned onto one CD then you are wrong. All the older songs were re-recorded in Gilby Clarke's (Guns n' Roses) studio. The songs sound as if they were recorded in one or two takes, giving them an almost live feel. The last three songs are real studio produced songs. They are taken directly from Love/Hate's "Living off Layla" with was only available directly from Skid until now. This CD is a great addition for anyone who ever listened to Love/Hate back in the early 90's. It gives you a fresh look at some of their classics along with a few songs you might have never heard before.
