Album Description
THE ALBUM: Early country music was primarily dominated by men, often over shadowing the women of the genre in historical retrospectives when it comes to their many contributions to the music, and their all-important female perspective on life, love and the wicked ways of the world. Fortunately, the ladies of Dallas' influential Big D Jamboree were more outspoken and assertive in their willingness to give the men a run for their money when it came to whoopin' it up on stage and putting on a show to remember.
Dragon Street follows up its acclaimed double CD The Big D Jamboree Live!, Volumes 1 & 2 with this long-overdue 29-track tribute to some of the most fantastic female performers to grace a stage in Texas...or anywhere! This set combines rare studio cuts and live performances together on one CD, bringing sharp focus to such overlooked performers as Helen Hall, Sherry Davis, and Doreen Freeman; as well as legends such as Janis Martin, Wanda Jackson, Charline Arthur, and more. Folks, it doesn't get much better than this!

Neko Case, you sly FOX.......2007-02-11
I bought this today at the BuddyHolly Museum in Lubbock, Texas. I am a real music buff, if there is such a thing, and I was caught by surprise when I spotted this. Then I played it.
Holy ShipBuilding, Waldo. This is the STUFF!!
I'll bet Neko Case knows these recordings inside out.
I am adding to what has already been written here. Read the first review for exact describers.
Biased opinion.......2005-12-21
My mom was one of the singers on this album. Pat Smith, who later became Patricia Johnson, had the biggest, most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Unfortunately, she passed away earlier this year in May and we miss her terribly. Her voice brought enjoyment to many...
WHERE ARE THE LOVETT SISTERS NOW ?.......2003-10-18
I GREW UP IN DALLAS LISTENING TO THE BIG D JAMBAREE AND I LOVED ALL OF THE SINGERS, ESPECIALLY TWO VERY YOUNG GIRLS CALLED THE LOVETT SISTERS. I LOVED HEARING " BACON AND EGGS", AS I USED TO LISTEN TO THEM SINGING IT LIVE ON THE RADIO AND WATCHING THEM SING IT ON TELEVISION. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM? ARE THEY STILL PERFORMING ?
Early "Girl Singers".......2001-10-13
Some of these are better than others, but none are dogs. I history lesson, if you are interested.

Various Artists The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree Dragon Street DCD70101
For the uninitiated, the Big "D" Jamboree was a weekly variety show broadcast over 50,000 watt radio station KRLD beginning in the late 1940s. It was a weekly event much along the lines of similar music-oriented live entertainment programs like the Grand Ole Opry, the Louisiana Hayride and the National Barndance. Held weekly at a Dallas, Texas wrestling venue called the Sportatorium, the Big "D" Jamboree's heyday ran from the late '40s through the early '60s. In continuing their superb Legends of the Big "D" Jamboree series which in addition to a wonderful 2-CD various artists collection from last year (The Big "D" Jamboree Live)as well as other single artist releases focusing on such stalwarts as Groovy Joe Poovey, Johnny Dollar, and Gene Vincent, Dragon Street Records rolls out what is easily its most humdinger collection yet with The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree. Clocking in at over an hour's worth of music spread cross 29 tracks that are culled from a combination of live material, studio demos and 45 RPM records, it's a collection that presents both known quantities (Janis Martin, Wanda Jackson, Charline Arthur) and unknowns (Helen Hall, The Lovett Sisters, Abbie Neal & the Ranch Girls, Pat Smith, Doreen Freeman, Sherry Davis, Betty Lou Lobb and Ramona Reed) from the Big "D" gal corral. In comparison to many of their Nashville feline country contemporaries, the gals were a more hard-edged, saucy bunch of honky tonkin' ladies for whom a cigarette and a bottle of beer with the fellows was likely never out of the question. More importantly, these were Virginia Slims types (remember those old TV ads??) who weren't afraid to speak their mind in song. Heck, all it takes is a listen to piece-of-mind pieces like What Else Does She Do Like Me? which opens with the not so lady-like line "She smokes the same sort of cigarettes as I do" or Wasted Life about a malcontent husband who can't pry himself from the barstool ("Sitting all alone at the bar / No one knows or cares where you are / You don't care about your home / You don't care about your wife / You're a perfect example of a wasted life") to understand what I'm talking about. Each of those cuts come from the tough-talking honkabilly pepper pot Helen Hall who takes the cake in this collection. Quite frankly, it doesn't get more hardcore honky tonk country than numbers like these and even better, The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree is filled with plenty more from where these two came from. All too often overshadowed by their C&W male contemporaries, The Gals of the Big "D" Jamboree is an insightful look at a vital chapter in the annals of female country music. Accompanied by a deluxe, 20-page booklet featuring discography, artist biographies from noted Texas country music historian Kevin Coffey, and an intro by current female rockabilly star Kim Lenz, this is a first rate package overflowing with hot tunes that comes highly recommended.

JUST EXACTLY WHAT I HAD HOPED FOR!!!.......2005-08-31
The CD of the original cast rcording of this musical was exactly what I had hoped for. It convinced me because of the clarity of the music and words that it is indeed a show that I shall agree to direct for a local community theatre group. Having no knowledge of this show, number 3 in the series, I needed to hear the music before I made my decision. This CD made my decision easy to make!
Very well done, if you get the jokes.......1999-12-08
So just when you thought you were safe from Sister Amnesia and the rest, out came "Nuncrackers" on the DRG label with its seasonal spoofs. Okay, I thought: any more would get us nun-plussed. So more came and we are! Witness now
(12623) with Vicki Lawrence. The premise is now that Sister Amnesia, having gotten back her memory in "Nunsense I" and a recording contract in "Nunsense II" is now able to do her stuff at the Grand Ole Opry House. To get the joke, one must know about the musical genre being parodied here. For example, in "Bye Birdie," the spoofs are hard to tell from the music they are mocking. I feel that same problem exists here. "Mini Pearls of Wisdom" has a cleverly punning title and really funny lyrics as it stands; but whether one gets the jokes in songs like "Dial 411" and "Seven A.M. in Phoenix" depends on how well one knows the country-western lyrics. Written and directed by Dan Goggin, "Jamboree" is loud, spirited, full of fun, and boasting a good supporting cast: Deborah Del Mastro, Nancy Johnston, Jennifer Smith, and Scott Wakefield. Now perhaps a little rest for the Sisters for maybe a decade or two?

From 1948 until the 1960s, Dallas's Big "D" Jamboree stage and radio show was the region's Grand Ole Opry, offering local favorites and major stars every Saturday. Unlike the conservative Opry, the Jamboree's music reflected Texas's more freewheeling sound. Drums and saxophones were common and, from the mid-'50s on, so was rockabilly. Beyond visiting stars (Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, and a youthful Johnny Cash) the show was sustained by house acts like the explosive, sensual Charline Arthur, whose hard-edged vocals anticipated Patsy Cline's. The Jamboree house band's vibrancy can be heard in the hot bass-slapping behind Copas and Hank Locklin that makes their traditional country tunes rock. Hearing Carl Perkins, Warren Smith, Sid King, Gene Vincent, Jerry Reed, and Ronnie Dawson in their youthful rockabilly prime proves yet again that this seminal music had twice the immediacy and primal impact live. Captured in near-flawless monaural, these extraordinary, well-packaged performances (one disc each devoted to country and rockabilly), complete with announcements, introductions, and the odd commercial, summarize a golden era too rarely preserved for posterity. --Rich Kienzle
Album Description
This historic double-CD release culminates over 3 years of research on the legendary barn dance that was Dallas version of the Grand Ol Opry. Countless country and rock & roll stars of the 50s got their first taste of performing in front of large audiences on nationally syndicated radio at the Big D, and many of those great live performances are made available here for the first time. Hear Sun Records-era Johnny Cash performing I Walk The Line to an adoring Dallas audience, or marvel at a sizzlin version of Blue Suede Shoes performed by the Carl Perkins band, both captured here in all their early glory. And country fans are sure to enjoy the vintage honky-tonk performances of Cowboy Copas, Ferlin Husky, Hank Locklin and Jimmie Heap, as well as female artists Charlene Arthur, Wanda Jackson and Ramona Reed.
All in all, this is a must-have time capsule of mid-20th century American roots music thats entirely unique, and apt to start a new trend in the release of other barn dance transcriptions from the period.
Customer Reviews:
Not Just For Music Historians.......2000-05-03
It's almost hard to believe all the acts that have fallen between the cracks in Country and Rock history. This stunning collection is a reminder that indeed, Rock and Roll Never Forgets. Besides stellar live cuts from Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Gene Vincent are a host of others giving their all on the Southwest version of the Grand Ole Opry and the Louisiana Hayride. Divided in to 2 Discs- Hillbilly and Rockabillies you'll find yourself wondering what happened to names like Charlene Arthur, Sherry Davis, Tommy Mitchell and The Belew Twins. Thankfully the excellent liner notes have info on the whereabouts of these and others. For those of you wondering if the history of Rock has already been written, its collections like these that remind us that there's still a lot to be uncovered.
A Big 'T' for Talent at Big 'D' Jamboree.......2000-03-28
"The Big 'D' Jamboree--Live, Volumes 1 & 2," a two-disc collection featuring live recordings by Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, is a fascinating musical snapshot of the intersection between country music and rock 'n' roll in the 1950s. Nashville's Grand Ole Opry was the major leagues of country music, but its organizers--like most adults in the '50s--frowned on the upstart rock 'n' roll. But there was another layer of country music showcases around the nation, one that was more tolerant of young rock performers because the owners saw that the music could lure new fans. Among these minor league operations: the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport, La.; Town Hall Party in Compton; and the Big "D" Jamboree in Dallas. Like the Opry itself, several of these "barn dances" were broadcast over radio and/or television, thus offering invaluable experience and exposure for such future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members as Elvis Presley, Cash, Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Given rock's rebellious image, it's interesting to see how folksy and polite some of these rockers sound on the Big "D" Jamboree appearances. The shrieks in the background when Perkins sings "Blue Suede Shoes" indicate that lots of young rock fans were on hand, but the tone of the show is very traditional and adult. Introducing "I Walk the Line," for instance, Cash speaks to the crowd with the same kind of patter you'd expect from a country veteran such as Roy Acuff or Ernest Tubb. "Thank you very much, friends," Cash says during a show that was probably recorded in 1956. "It's a real pleasure to be here with you all tonight at the Big 'D.' It's always one of our biggest thrills to come to Dallas to play for all the wonderful folks down here . . . and here's our latest on Sun [Records]. We hope you folks will enjoy hearing [it] maybe one more time." There's a similar exchange when Perkins introduces his signature "Blue Suede Shoes" by calling it a song about "a pair of slippers." Disc 1--titled "Hillbillies"--features such name acts as Ferlin Husky, Hank Locklin, Cowboy Copas and Leon Payne, as well as such relative unknowns as Charline Arthur, who is described in the liner notes as "a talented country singer, tough and energetic, who not only responded to rockabilly, but in some ways anticipated it." Her two tracks--including one written by Mae Axton, who also co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel"--are intriguing enough to make a rockabilly enthusiast seek out the compilation of her music on the Bear Family label. Disc 2--titled "Rockabillies"--offers a variety of cult and hit artists, including Gene Vincent, Warren Smith, Johnny Carroll and Jerry Reed. Presley isn't featured on the album, which was released by Dragon Street Records, but his presence was so dominant in rockabilly in the middle to late '50s, when these recordings were made, that it's only fitting that three artists perform songs associated with him. It's also symbolic of the somewhat outcast nature of country music and rock at the time that the Big "D" Jamboree was held at the Sportatorium, a building mostly devoted to pro wrestling. In fact, the musicians performed on the same mat that the wrestlersused. In the liner notes, album producer David Dennard describes how Ed McLemore, who ran the wrestling programs at the Sportatorium, saw the potential of country music in the area and became what Dennard describes as a mini-version of Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker. McLemore apparently became an important regional music force, "a mini-empire of management, publishing, booking, road shows and artist publicity concerns under his direction." But the rock 'n' roll sounds that initially helped draw new fans eventually ended up taking audiences away. "I think rock and roll just done us in," Johnny Hicks, a DJ who was associated with the show, recalls in the album booklet. "After all, the generations were changing, the music tastes were changing. It was just one of those things that happened." While the Big "D" Jamboree lasted, however, it served as an important cultural bridge between country and rock. The music and recording quality are uneven on the two discs, but the spirit of the shows still comes through.
Amazing Performances On Big "D" Jamboree.......2000-02-12
I was really impressed when I first listened to this cd. Artists you never dreamed of you would ever hear perform live are present on this cd. Great live acts from the fifties by Carl Perkins and other greats. I was especially impressed by the Belew Twins live stuff. Great sound, great quality. If you love rockabilly like I do, go for it!

Very essential release.......2002-04-30
Once again, another cornerstone of my collection. If you are going to own one release by Moon Mullican, this needs to be it. One complaint though: The notes don't even mention the songs included. They just say "The music speaks for itself." That is inexcusable for such an important CD.
Moon's Moonshine.......2000-09-22
Get this CD...it's what Willie Nelson and the rest of them have tried to sound like. You can smell the Eastex piney woods when Moon sings and plays.

The original crazy hillbilly at the piano.......1999-12-11
Moon Mullican wrote the book for every rock & roller who ever sat at the piano and sang. The only white performer on the King R&B label, his music is unique and American.
The First King of rock 'n' roll.......1999-06-30
Moon Mullican was the first King of rock 'n' roll and the only artist that ever lived to be the equal to Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmie Rodgers and this CD is the best to demonstrate why. "Pipeliner blues" & "What's the matter with the mill" are 2 excellent examples of Moon's blues, while his hit,"I'll sail my ship alone" is one of the most touching country songs ever."Rocket to the moon","I done it" & "Rheumatism boogie" are exactly the kind of blues that would be called rock 'n' roll in the '50s. The music on this CD demonstrates possibly the best of Moon's work - which has always been excellent and consistant and this is an ideal introduction to his music.

The Holy Grail of Bluegrass.......2007-03-27
There are two Flatt and Scruggs albums that sum up all you really have to know about bluegrass music. The first is the album "Foggy Mountain Banjo" and the second is "Foggy Mountain Jamboree". Here you have Flatt and Scruggs, two of the icons of the genre, at their peak vocally and instrumentally. The bluegrass classics of "Flinthill Special" and "Earl's Breakdown" are recorded here and are two standards every 5-string banjo player wants to master in order to become worthy to be known as a bluegrass player. The vocals, especially "Blue Ridge Cabin Home" and "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy" are classics that mark a certain era in the development of bluegrass music and define the way it should be done. If you are beginning to build a bluegrass library, this is the cornerstone for your collection. One listen and you'll understand why Flatt and Scruggs were revered the way they were by lovers of this style of music.

Album Description
This collection of rare and unreleased recordings is a companion piece to last year's The Gals of the Big D Jamboree, and completes the various artists releases scheduled for this historic project. It features outstanding studio and live recordings by some of the southwest's most talented and overlooked performers, including two very early unreleased tracks from singing legend Lefty Frizzell. Other standout cuts include Riley Crabtree's Go Cat Go (live), Jimmy Fields' Your Picture On The Wall, blind performer Leroy Jenkins' Hard Luck Hard Time Blues (which sounds like a track that's straight out of the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?), and Orville Couch's Wait's What Broke The Wagon Down, just to name a few. Packaged with a fabulous 36-page booklet that includes artist biographies, a discography, and loads of unreleased photos; this is a must-have CD for all country enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone with a taste for real Texas honky tonk.

Let's hear it for The Guys of the Big "D"!.......2002-03-04
Another outstanding release in the Legends of the Big "D" Jamboree series. Like last year's "Gals" disc, this one mostly features studio cuts alongside just a sprinking of live recordings, but it also emulates that release with its fine mix of artists, ranging from a couple of rare recordings by the legendary Lefty Frizzell to outstanding cuts from guys like Riley Crabtree, Jimmy Fields, Leroy Jenkins and Orville Couch. A personal favorite, Gene O'Quin (the guy Wayne Hancock got his sound from), also is represented with two cuts. This disc is more country and lighter on the rockabilly than previous releases, but it's still essential stuff. - Roots & Rhtyhm
