5 out of 5 stars The British Beats on.......2007-07-04

This CD was really good, it was all the original artists and their music which takes me back to when I was a teenager. What great music we enjoyed then as well as now.......

5 out of 5 stars the british beat.......2007-05-27

I am very glad to add this cd to my "oldies" collection. In the future I will be looking to add more british rock to my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-05-21

A very nice collection of works from British singers and groups of the 1960s. This 3 CD set, as some note, costs a bunch, but it takes one back in time very nicely. Also, in the version that I acquired, there is a bonus CD that includes some of the best works of that decade--The Animals sing "House of the Rising Sun"; Marianne Faithfull does "As Tears Go By"; there are Herman's Hermits classics, "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" and "There's a Kind of Hush." Of course, there are obvious absences, such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, etc. Some strange songs show up, too. Is "Winchester Cathedral" really a song to be included here? Do we need four cuts from Dusty Springfield, good as she might be?

That said, many of these songs are classics of the 60s. Think about these:

The Troggs ("Wild Thing"); The Mindbenders ("A Groovy Kind of Love"); Gerry and the Pacemakers ("Ferry Cross the Mersey" and "How Do You Do It?"); Manfred Mann ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy"); Donovan ("Mellow Yellow"); The Searchers ("Love Potion Number Nine"); The Yardbirds ("For Your Love"); Petula Clark ("Downtown"); Lulu ("To Sir with Love"); and so on.

There is a nice booklet going with this CD set. It provides some nice photos, a brief essay on the British music of the 1960s. Worth the price? If you're someone interested in the British music of that decade, then, yes, it is probably a good investment.

5 out of 5 stars British Beat.......2007-05-13

Really a terrific compilation. These are more songs from our generation, and it's really nice to have them all in one spot.

4 out of 5 stars Very good...could have been great if..........2007-05-13

I totally like the song selection! SOME of the songs were recorded in stereo, and they sound TERRIFIC! However, my disappointment is that some -like Gimme Some Lovin' were recorded only in mono. I have a top-end music system, and I was really looking forward to getting a "room-full of sound"...with different instruments/voices coming out of different speakers.

Had all of the songs been stereo, I would have given this a perfect five. As it is, however, I WILL concede that even the "mono songs" were recorded well. That is, they don't sound tinny like poorly recorded CD's. do. Pricey, but there's a TON of songs! I'm glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01

Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!

I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.

The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.

Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18

This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.

5 out of 5 stars I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23

I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.

    5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23

Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

2 out of 5 stars Bubblegum ditties of the Baby Boomers.......2007-04-14

Here are the obscure recordings of "Flash-in-the-Pan" artists and "hits" of us Baby Boomers! Stuff that was the temporary fodder of Casey Kasum and the "top 40' "Hit" radio stations across the United States in the '60's.

One Hit Wonders that were played over and over in their time then promptly forgotten. They were re'released in the many incarnations of "K-Tel," then forgotten again as these K-Tel records found their way to thriftshops, then landfills.

If you want to reminisce about all that "bubblegum" heard as a child, be more imaginative! Pass this one by and instead purchase The Resident's Third Reich and Roll! Only The Residents could give these "one hit wonders" the ROASTING they DESERVED!

3 out of 5 stars Got me what I wanted..........2007-01-05

OK, I wanted "Then You Can Tell Me Goobye" by the Casinos, and here's a CD that provided it. Very nice. The rest of it? Ehhhh...., could be worse, I guess. Only real disappointment was the version of "Everlasting Love" by Robert Knight. While Knight may have been the original, Carl Carlton certainly recorded what has become the definative version of this song and Knight's pales by comparison. That's the way it works with compilations, you get the good with the bad. Glad I bought it, though!

4 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonders.......2005-09-06

They definately are wonders. Wonderful that is. Great cd, bought for our DJ biz, but it seems to end up in my car alot!
    Can't get enough of them!

5 out of 5 stars Back for more.......2005-06-29

Vol. 2 of Bartley's anthology of one-hit wonders isn't quite as consistently good as the first, but it's still a fine balance of obscuros and hard-to-find well-known hits. It was great to have Robert Knight's original '66 version of "Everlasting Love" at my fingertips, for example, as well as Merilee Rush's "Angel of the Morning."
You can find a couple of the hits elsewhere ("Hang On, Sloopy" can be found in several places, while "Expressway to Your Heart" is on the three-CD "The Philly Sound" Philadelphia International collection), but this was, for years, the only CD where you could find the killer white soul shouter "No Good to Cry" by Connecticut band The Wildweeds (now on a killer 2002 collection called "No Good to Cry: The Best of The Wildweeds"). The song, written and sung by the teenage Al Anderson (before his long run with NRBQ and his successful career as a country songwriter), charted big in its home state (where I grew up) and in the South, but just made the upper 80s in Billboard; you fans from the rest of the country will wonder just how the hell this didn't become one of the all-time great chart hits.

5 out of 5 stars Memories In Every Song.......2007-04-11

i came of age to this music. good times and bad times, war and peace.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to sing with!!.......2006-08-10

These ageless classics are Great. This mix of songs really gets you back to the 60's, crusin' main street, school days, sock hops after the football game, and teenage love. Wow! Great times and Great music!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars '60s: Gold Various Artists.......2006-08-03

This series Gold, put out by Universal Music Co. is usually of top quality. Culling from the vast Universal Catalog, the '60s, has an excellent selection of well known standards as well as several "hard to find " chestnuts. The sound quality is very good and 40 songs, make this a thrifty purchase for the asking price.

    4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...'60s GOLD Will Satisfy That Nostalgia Craving.......2006-07-18

'60s GOLD is the latest release in Hip-O Records' "Gold" series. As usual they do a fine job in remastering and song selection--and amazon.com's discounted price makes this a real bargain! I have purchased several previous "Gold" series releases (SOUTHERN ROCK, '70s, BLUES, among others) and have always been pleased, and this is no exception.

However, here are a few points to consider:

*Most of these tracks are from the mid-Sixties. Twenty-six of the tracks were released from 1964 to 1967--eleven from 1967 alone! [Note: All tracks are presented chronologically.]

*There is a heavy emphasis on Motown hits. [Five of which are duplicated from MOTOWN GOLD.] My only concern is why was it necessary to include three(!) Supremes songs?

*The British Invasion is represented by only three artists--The Mindbenders, The Troggs and Procol Harum. The heavy hitters (Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, et. al.) are missing. Also, two of America's biggest bands--The Beach Boys and The Doors--are also MIA.

*Finally, with each disk under sixty minutes, it would have been easy to add another ten to twelve tracks and perhaps rectify some of the above concerns.

But if you're looking for a collection of songs guaranteed to satisfy your Sixties nostalgia craving, there are few releases that will provide that fix better than '60s GOLD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If you've never seen kids harmonizing on a street corner you didn't grow up in any major city in the 1950s. The music was pure, the lyrics understandable, and the theme was love--unrequited, lost, and found. Where classic doo-wop is concerned, the leader usually boasted the best voice, but his or her supporting cast was of equal importance when it came to vocalizing the likes of "Blue Moon," "I Wonder Why," "Barbara-Ann" and "Get a Job," performed here by the Marcels, the Regents, and Dion & the Belmonts, respectively. Also included among the 20 artists featured on this hit-laden 22-song primer are Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"), the Monotones ("Get a Job"), and the Flamingos ("I Only Have Eyes for You"). Decades after these songs filled the airwaves, they still elicit memories and a desire to sing along--in the background, of course. --Cal Greilsamer

    5 out of 5 stars Good collection!.......2007-06-03

This is an excellent collection of country hits, especially for those of us who grew up during this time-period. This collection may not be suitable for serious country music fans, but it does provide and excellent selection of music by lead performers from the 1950s through the 1970s for those of us who appreciate Country-Western music. I was very pleased to find several songs I remember from my youth, including: "The Battle of New Orleans," "El Paso," "Six Days on the Road," "King of the Road," "Flowers on the Wall," "Big Bad John," "The Three Bells," "Ring of Fire" (I was a big Johnny Cash fan as a kid), "Ode to Billy Joe," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Rhinestone Cowboy," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Convoy" (yes, I had a CB radio), "The Gambler, and others.

Check out the other songs on the title list to see if you remember these. The collection comes with 3 CDs, one for each decade. The sound quality is good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Legends of Country Music:Classic Hits of the 50's,60's&70's.......2007-05-09

If you like country music from this era it is a good sample. Many top ten hits.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful old songs remembered.......2007-01-18

My Parents and my Sister are all enjoying these songs from the days when we remembered Country Legends. This CD Collection is tremendous... has all of the greats on it. Highly recommend it to anyone wanting to hear the good "old" songs.

5 out of 5 stars I can't believe how many great songs are on this set.......2006-12-16

I bought this for my Dad for Christmas, but I can't wait to borrow it. My jaw dropped as I read the song list for this set. While a few don't really fit (When You're Hot, You're Hot???), the set is filled with some of the best songs ever to be played on country radio.

    I hope there's a Volume II.

5 out of 5 stars GREATS HITS. HECK - EVEN THE MISSES ARE GOOD!!.......2006-12-13

Growing up in the '50s and '60s, I remember the songs on this set very well. This is a good review of one off hits like the Browns "Three Bells" (I couldn't stand that song as a kid but kind of enjoy it now), the Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall",Floyd Cramer's "Last Date", "Detroit (I want to go home)", "Abilene", "El Paso" (notice the city name theme), and a host of others. All the major players are represented, Johnny Horton (Battle of New Orleans), Hank Snow (Movin' On), Patsy Cline (I Fall to Pieces), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire), on and on and on. However, its for the more obscure hits that you should purchase this set. A great overview of the period. Hey, I discovered that Webb Pierce was a real rockin' musician!! Bet many of you didn't know that either!! The most interesting stuff is the '50s and '60s. The '70s goes into the Willie and Waylon (and similar artists)thing which you probably have on other collections. However, the sound quality is great and the early stuff fantastic!! If you like country music, buy it!! If you like country music and want to drive someone crazy who does not like traditional country, buy it BIG TIME!!

The closest thing currently available to the Tempts' first Greatest Hits album, this CD actually provides partial redemption for the generally redundant Millennium Collection series. Sticking with one exception (the ambiguous drug song "Cloud Nine") to the group's '60s love songs, it's a quick reminder of what made them such a major part of radio-listening romancers' lives then and now. From the sweet "My Girl" and "The Way You Do the Things You Do" to the rough-edged, nearly paranoid "(I Know) I'm Losing You," these hits demonstrate the many ways Motown knew to say "I love you." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars good intro to the tempts if you're a new fan.......2006-09-14

If you're a new fan (like I was when I 1st bought this) then this is a good CD for you to purchase but if you're a die-hard fan don't buy it cuz most likely you already have all of these songs! I bought this CD a year ago & now I can't get enough of The Tempts!

    1 out of 5 stars Ripoff.......2006-05-26

Universal could, of course, have put both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 on the same disc (22 songs total). And music companies wonder why CD sales are down/illegal downloads are up. Universal isn't the only offender in the cheapskate sweepstakes, but it certainly leads the pack. Great artists, and great music, done in by greed. Very sad.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Cd.......2006-01-02

This is a very good cd, I don't know why the other reviewers disagree. I think this is an awesome cd. the Temptations are the best at what they do. This cd has thier most famous songs on it Like. My Girl, Papa's got A Brand new Bag, Ain't To Proud To Beg(My Fav.) & Others. I recomend this cd to who ever is a true Temptation's Fan.

If you liked this cd Check out the whole Temptaions, Cd Collection.

    1 out of 5 stars Laughable.......2003-02-16

I am a (as another reviewer put it) "die-hard" temptations fan. Always have been. Infact, my latest thing going on is trying to get their rare 80's albums [Together Again, Special, To Be Continued, etc] on CD. It is truly amazing that you can find the songs available in this particular collection on countless "greatest hits" collections. Save your money and buy the Emperors of Soul Box Set. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars For casual listeners ONLY...........2003-01-05

...because if you love the Tempts like I do, you already own these songs on other so-called "greatest hits" CDs or the original albums. This MILLENNIUM COLLECTION is merely a sampling of the incredible music that the Temptations have made over the years...a series like this doesn't really serve a group of their magnitude very well. So-so to start out with if you have absolutely NO Tempts music or if you aren't really a fan of theirs and you want to know what all the hype surrounding them is about.

It's clear that Motown/Universal is once again doing what they do so well: repackaging the same old hits that everyone has already on other Tempts CDs with a shiny, new look, because they know that it is pretty much classic Motown music like this that is keeping the ghost of this once-great label from going under! I gave this CD three stars only because The Tempts are one of my favorite groups and I like the songs on it, but honestly, this is a waste. Do NOT buy this CD - spend your money on ANTHOLOGY or the original albums instead, where the work of this magificent group can be better represented and appreciated.

2 out of 5 stars Why these songs?.......2004-10-19

"A Music Fan" says he only knew one of these songs?!! What cave has he been living in?? His gross lack of music knowlege is scary! You can do better than this compilation - Too few songs and chosen rather arbitrarily. The songs are classics though. Still can't believe previous reviewer didn't know "Sounds of Silence", "Pretty Woman", etc. --- How sad!

    2 out of 5 stars skip it.......2004-05-17

This is definately not the 60's compilation CD to get. Who was in charge of choosing the songs on this boring album anyway? I bought it for Van Morrisson, and was not familiar with any of the other songs but one. They weren't good.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Collection - But There Are Better Ones!.......2003-03-24

This fourteen track 60's collection is good but could have been better had it been a 2-cd set. There are some serious deletions here such as The Mamas & Papas (Monday Monday or California Dreaming) , Lovin' Spoonful (Do You Believe In Magic or You Didn't Have To Be So Nice), Creedence Clearwater (Proud Mary or Bad Moon Rising) to name just a few. You do, however, have some great songs here such as "Turn, Turn, Turn" by The Byrds, "Oh, Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison, "Kicks" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "Sunshine Superman" by Donovan, and "Down On Me" by Big Brother & The Holding Company, etc. For an even better collection I would suggest the 2-cd set entitled "Positively 60's".

5 out of 5 stars smooth AND groovin w/ no sappy duds.......2000-10-15

way cool collection, slow & funky ones without gettin too slow or hard.. a real mix rather than all groovin ones or all slower ones... keeps your attention aroused
