As you can guess by this album's title, this 2-disc set was recorded to aid in Willie Nelson's tax problems. But instead of merely compiling older tracks or demos, Willie netered the studio to record two dozen fresh solo interpretations of some of his more interesting early compositions.

With his guitar and voice demostrating equal drama and emotion, he brings back a few obscurities, many genuinely hearbreaking tunes (he no doubt wanted no-one at the I.R.S. to crack a grin), and a few tunes made famous by other performers. Thoughout the whole of the program, his performances are intimate and intriguing -- the listener feels as though they are in Nelson's tour bus or living room, sharing a true moment.

Rather smartly, this set was initially marketed only through direct marketing. Unfortunately, it remains out of print, deserving a kinder fate. Here's your chance to hear music as its creator intended: raw, often painful, sometimes goofy, and leaving you wanting more.

This band has great talent but the album was totaly flat their intent is noticable but not felt,the musical arrangement was horrible and i was REALLY LET DOWN,especially for the price i paid i would have been better spending it on any other album. I give them 1 star for effort but thats about all they will get out of me.I expected alot more especially since they talked about the "OLD SCHOOL SALSA FEEL" it felt alot like reggeaton beat...the same beat over and over and over.

I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.

While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.

This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).

For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.

For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.

I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!

I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!

I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!

It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

      Well, not all that contemporary perhaps...the title track is a Howlin' Wolf composition featuring a thumping rhumba beat, and guitarist Lil' Ed Williams and bassist Willie Kent cover two Elmore James tunes and a little-known song by Lil' Ed's uncle, the late, great J.B. Hutto.

      The band is top-notch, featuring Allen Batts on piano and Hammond B3 (he used to play keyboards for Otis Rush and Albert Collins), drummer "Baldhead Pete" Williams, and veteran West Side guitarist Eddie C. Campbell. The liner notes are even kind enough to inform the listener that "the clean sounding lead guitar on the title cut is Eddie C. Campbell. Throughout the CD, all solos and rhythm guitar sounds of this tonality are Eddie C's while the slide, fuzz-tone and generally raw sounds are those of Lil' Ed"!

      The two featured performers share lead vocals equally. Willie Kent contributes two original songs, Lil' Ed Williams three, and the rest is a well-chosen batch of covers highlighted by a swinging rendition of R&B pioneer Don Robey's mid-tempo shuffle "As The Years Go Passing By", Elmore James' intense slow burner "My Bleeding Heart", and the semi-obscure Milton "Monk" Higgins/Maurice Dollison shuffle "Bird Nest On The Ground".
      Lil' Ed's swinging, lighthearted "Going Shopping" and the tough "Your Love Is So Strong" are the best original songs, and while the title track doesn't quite live up to the Wolf's awesome original, it is a fine rendition in its own right.

      This is a very enjoyable, well-played, well-arranged and very accessible late-90s blues album. Great musicianship and a fine and quite varied batch of slow and fast(er) songs makes it an excellent purchase for blues and blues-rock fans alike.

      Fans of contemporary Chicago Blues will recognize the two names of the artists on this CD. This is the first recorded teaming of these two blues artists. Lil Ed is the nephew of the late great JB Hutto. Ed plays JB's actual guitar and carries forward his great slide guitar and blues boogie tradition. Lil Ed's vocals reveal a big voice from a little guy. Willie Kent is known to blues fans as the leading blues bass player today. Willie's earthy and down-home blues sound, both on the bass and in vocals, lays down the backbone of the great sounds on this CD. This is a wild and raucous ride. These two can't lose with the stuff they use!
