Although Cliff Edwards, also known as Ukulele Ike, was one of the most popular entertainers of the 1920s he is almost forgotten today. He was the first performer to do the classic "Singing in the Rain," he debuted Gershwin's "Fascinatin' Rhythm" in 1924, and he acted in over 100 movies. Unfortunately, he received no screen credit for his most famous role--as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's Pinocchio. His version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" is still the definitive version of that classic song. Cliff Edwards deserves to be remembered, and a good place to rediscover him is on Singing in the Rain, a collection of songs from the 1910s, '20s, and '30s recorded for radio in the early '40s. He accompanies his jazzy vocals with his virtuoso ukulele playing. His performances have a surprisingly modern feel with none of the stilted quality that performers from the '20s can have. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Cliff at his Best.......2007-03-09
Before he was "Jiminy Cricket", Cliff was a great jazz skat singer. These recordings capture his sense of rhythm, range and inventiveness. His range is amazing. He can go from baritone to counter tenor effortlessly.
I've often thought that the Disney drawings of Jiminy Cricket were intentionally made to look like Cliff.
One of the great personalities of the Jazz Age!.......2006-07-27
Wow! Ever since I've watched a few Cliff Edwards movies, I've gotten addicted to his voice. The song selection on this CD is good, and is really a great tribute to him. Still, I was dissapointed to not find the song Night Owl on it. I thought it was really a catchy tune and I would have loved it to be on this CD. It was a song from a musical called Take a Chance, with him(Cliff Edwards), James Dunn, Lillian Roth, June Knight, and Charles(Buddy)Rogers. It's a good movie other than Pinocchio of Edwards's.
Cliff Edwards: A Great Talent!!!.......2005-06-05
Cliff Edwards was a big star in the 20s and 30s. No, he wasn't a handsome crooner and he didn't enter into the Swing movement. His career as a successful singer was too brief. But just listen to this wonderful album from ASV/Living Era. I was captivated by the first song! I was totally entranced listening to his excellent voice and unique style of singing. He can be lighthearted on songs like "Who Takes Care of the Caretaker's Daughter?" but he can also put his heart into songs such as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". Today people think Gene Kelly was the originator of "Singin" In the Rain" but just listen to Cliff sing it! It was his song and a momumental hit for him. He introduced the song in "Hollywood Revue of 1929", an MGM film that was a box office hit. Cliff Edwards had a knack for comedy, after all, he knew he was not the type women would swoon over, but he was a very superb musician and this CD is evidence of his diverse talent. I love this album and I am so glad I have it in my collection of music from the 20s and 30s. Why Cliff isn't given the credit due to him as a innovative musician is a mystery. If you like Jazz from this era, this CD is for you!!! I cannot recommend it highly enough. The notes that Cliff could reach are amazing. He transformed every song he recorded into his own. That shows true artistry. If anyone knows who he is, they know him for being the voice of Jiminy Cricket which he was excellent at but he left behind these superb recordings. From songs with a touch of humour to heart-felt songs all done so very, very well. This CD is seventy-three minutes of great music from a truly gifted musician. Buy it!!! You won't regret it. You will be captivated by his music. I hestitated but I remembered his great performance in "Hollywood Revue of 1929" of "Singing In the Rain". I have come to appreciate and treasure Cliff Edwards' talent so much more from this superb collection of his recordings. I believe that you will too. I would give it six stars if I could but it deserves five stars. Don't hesitate and treat yourself to a talented artist whom you will thoroughly enjoy.
one of the true originals.......2005-05-06
Cliff Edwards, what a talent! Nobody knows who he is anymore, but his music is a segement or original Americana, just listen to this CD and you'll be feeling great. It's a real pleasure to listen to music so stripped down yet lyrical nevertheless. And there are 32 great tracks on this CD (even though they run a couple of minutes each, each one is a gem)! I would love to see a movie made about Cliff's life someday, a true American tragedy. This recording was made from a radio transcription in 1943, long after Cliff had initially made his mark. He was singing "scat' back in the 20's before that style of singing even had a name. And don't forget that he is the voice of Jiminy Cricket ("When You Wish Upon A Star")!
The Saddest Story.......2005-03-04
Wait till you hear the passion and the wit with which Cliff sings the famous Billy Rose number, "The Night Is Young (And You're So Beautiful." I love the optimism and the subtlety of the lyrics, "When the lady is kissable, and the evening is cool, any dream is permissable--in the heart of a fool." Elsewhere the track uses the word "overamorous"--when was the last time you heard that in a song lyric?
Cliff was born in Hannibal, Missouri and had the class to brag that he hailed from the same burg as none other than Tom Sawyer. Like Tom Sawyer, he was a boy at heart. Even his trademark uke had a boyish charm to it, and he could wield it like nobody's business. It is said that at the top of his popularity, music stores were selling ukeleles at a rate of 250 a week, a feat unmatched ever since.
This LP, made in the 40s while Cliff's voice had attained a golden lustre, shows him at his best. It's simple, and unadorned, but you will surely get a tear in your eye when you hear him whisper:
"Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in to see you through/
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true."
It didn't happen for Cliff Edwards, but it can still happen to you.

Pendergrass's second album after his departure from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes continued his solo ascent. Life Is a Song Worth Singing masterfully mixes and matches moods, flowing from two very different anthems (the dramatic title track and the party jam "Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose") through seductive classics such as "Close the Door." His rich vocals ride tasty Philly tracks on one of the city's true masterpieces. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
The peak..........2006-06-12
I was only 4 years old when this album came out, but I remember WELL the day my father came home with THIS album. The first song he put on was "Only You", and that did it for me!
For me this IS Teddy's peak because this album has a great balance of upbeat and more mellow material while the albums after this focused more on the bedroom. They were still good albums, but the funk factor was sacrificed. This album and his self-titled solo debut are the ones I remember most and bring back the most memories of Teddy from my childhood before his injury.
Anyway, the balance, again, is what makes this album so great. I mean he can come out with FUNK on "Only You", disco-ish on the title cut, he gets DOWN, gets FUNKY, and gets loose (which sounds a lot a like the song Rerun always danced to on "What's Happenin'"), "When Somebody Loves You Back", and of course, "Close The Door."
Like Luther Vandross, a lot of people forget that Teddy had a hell of a way with dance-oriented and upbeat music. This album is proof positive. If you're looking to buy ONE album from Teddy, this is it.
The album that made Teddy a solo superstar!.......2003-08-24
This was Teddy's second album and "Close The Door" virtually guaranteed he would continue to be the #1 male R&B singer of the 1970s. His self-titled solo debut had set the prototype for his subsequent PIR releases but this one became his most successful project thanks to "Only You", "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose" and the above-mentioned classic ballad.

THE ENTIRE CD IS GREAT, BUT CLOSE THE DOOR IS A SONG FOR ANY ONE TRYING TO BE IN LOVE. LISTEN AND LEARN

The Best of the Gaither Series.......2001-12-04
This is the very best of the Gaither Series -- it is made great by the Hoppers' rousing rendition of "Shouting Time". The excitement and enthusiasm of this group brings the audience to a near fever pitch. A MUST HAVE in the Gaither Series!
Atlanta Homecoming-All Day Singin' At the Dome vol.1.......2000-05-03
This CD is one of my very favorites in my collection of Gaither Homecoming CDs. I was actually there at that all-day concert in Atlanta in June of '98, so I was able to see them record the CD and the video live. It's a wonderful compilation of songs by some of the best southern gospel singers of today. If you like good southern gospel music by many different artists, this is the perfect CD to buy.

This is southern gospel at its ABSOLUTE BEST! I first heard Bill & Gloria/Gaither Vocal Band/ Homecoming Friends on a TNN special and since then, I have purchased 4 cassettes, 3 CD's, & 2 videos. You can't feel anything but joyfully blessed and humbled after hearing these. Plus, this is one of the last recordings of our dear friend and brother, J.D. Sumner of the Stamps quartet. This album and the "Kennedy Center Homecoming" are a MUST for your collection.

In the late '70s the Cheap Suit Serenaders--fronted by comix legend Robert Crumb but also featuring fellow old-time music artistes Robert Armstrong, Bob Brozman, Al Dodge, Tom Marion, and Terry Zwigoff (who would later produce a whole film on Crumb)--were the only group around who would even think about still producing 78s. After all, that's where all their favorite music came from. Those platters are now highly collectible, but their albums live on, reissued on CD. Singing in the Bathtub collects some of their best work--humorous originals such as "Suits Crybaby Blues" and plenty of covers of tunes from obscure 78s. Their playing is flawless (you probably haven't heard the steel guitar, banjo mandolin, or musical saw played with such virtuosity as here), the tunes are mostly fun and spirited, and the music styles are varied. In the hands of the Cheap Suits, old-time music is alive and well. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
I wish there were 6 stars.......2006-11-10
This is a great interpretation of some old treasures. The first (title) track will knock your socks off when Bob Brozman comes in with his Resophonic guitar. And there are some new(er) songs in the same vein, especially "Shopping Mall Blues". See also "Chasin' Rainbows". If you don't have both, take the buy-2 deal. You won't be sorry, except that you'll never get some of these out of your head.
Singing in the shower's like singing in the rain........2005-08-31
R. Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders were an "old timey" band fronted by the legendary underground cartoonist. This CD features their third (and last) album, originally titled "Number Three". On this album, the group was expanded from four members to six, which resulted in them having a "fuller" sound. The music here is a lot of fun and it's very well played. The CD is in mono, except for "My Gal Sal", which is inexplicably in stereo. If you enjoy "old timey" music, you will definitely enjoy this CD.
How can music so quaint "rock" so hard?.......2004-10-31
These guys tackled old time music with such enthusiasm, musical talent, and just plain "hep", this collection is entertaining without any sense of feeling like a museum piece. Their talent and pure love of music are unmistakable in the instrumentation and vocal work of these songs. If you think you are too cool to smile and sing along, maybe even dance around a little, then don't buy this cd.
MAKES YOUR FEET TAP AND BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE!.......2003-12-17
An all too forgotten music brought back to life, by this amazing band of well humored and talented musicians. Find modern day albums are sufficently lacking in the playing of a saw?!! well search no further! This CD resurects instruments and music long past, but never out of style. Mr. Robert Crumb has certainly left his mark on this world in very unique ways :)
"Sensitive guys who play old outdated tunes"; what a treat!.......2001-01-18
I have all three of the original vinyl LP albums and thought I'd never get to hear these wonderful tunes again when my turntable broke and I switched to CDs. Crumb & Company complain in their self-mocking Suits Crybaby Blues: "Nobody likes our music, they all want stuff that's loud". Whatever the market may be, this music makes my soul soar. It's not "Camp", that 60s fad where truly bad pop culture was held up as unconscious self-parody. These multi-talented, multimedia artists lovingly render these obscure, high-spirited and quaintly corny echoes from a more innocent era. Naive, a bit goofy, and even somewhat racist in an innocent way ( "Sing Song Girl" portrays cartoonish orientals)this music evokes the enthusiastic rowdiness of an America on a binge. Much like R. Crumb's comix, the stuff may be a bit politically incorrect and even grotesque, but it is raucously entertaining.

Eden Regained.......2004-07-10
After Salamander Crossing's breakup, Rani Arbo and her band Daisy Mayhem went their own way. "Gambling Eden" takes a different approach than 2001's "Cocktail Swing." Whereas the previous disc focused on 20's & 30's jazz, "Gambling Eden" is more in the folk-rock-country territory of a band like Nickel Creek. One of the first records I bought as a boy in the early 60's was "Stewball" by Lonnie Donnegan. At Arbo's hands the track pulses with energy with Arbo's violin giving it a traditional feel, particularly compared with Donnegan's earlier rockabilly take, "Way out in California where Stewball was born, all the jockeys in the country say he blew there in a storm." This set contains some fine originals such as the slow melodic "Finland," "Is it raining in Finland? I want to know; It's covered up with snow & I want to see you if you're ever coming home." "Turtle Dove" is a traditional tune traced to 1835, given a great energetic rendition that will be embraced by "O Brother" enthusiasts. John McGann & Chris Moore's "Closer" is such a lovely haunting slow song polished to a shine by the Mayhem band, "The answer always came back in a tangle like vines climbing up the side of a hollow tree, Now I think that looking up & wondering is just the place I really want to be." "O Death" that appeared on the "O Brother" soundtrack by Ralph Stanley is given a haunting arrangement and impassioned Arbo vocal. "Sparrow" is a country-swing original that brings to mind some of Toni Price's great recordings. The CD takes its title from "Eve" that traces the fall in the garden, "Paradise is only what you feel, everything else is so real, Who told us we had this power? I gambled Eden in an hour." "The Farmer Is the Man" is another familiar tune given another sterling rendition. My favorite track is the uproariously energetic "Road to Heaven," "I'm gonna find my own road to heaven, I'm gonna find me mine." The CD concludes with Dave Carter's "Farewell to Saint Dolores," a turgid lament. Arbo may have felt that she was "Gambling Eden" with the new direction she's taken on this disc, but the level of success here encountered might better be termed "Eden Regained." Enjoy!

Stunning introduction to an array of music.......2000-07-08
This album is a superb introduction to the variety of gospel music at its roots. In remastering early recordings the engineers have done an excellent job of cleaning enough surface noise out for one to enjoy the music - but not removing too much noise to distort the original intent.
You get a bit of Northern gospel as well as Southern gospel, accompanied and a cappella, solo and congregation, professional and "just plain folks". Every track is a gem of its type - only your personal preferences will distinguish the "best" tracks.
Today for best tracks I'll nominate God Leads His Dear Children Along by Rev Joseph Callender and I Want To Go Where Jesus Is by Slim Ducket/Pig Norwood. But that says nothing about my vote tomorrow.

Amazing Collection of Live Tracks.......2005-06-14
This double-CD set contains 19 previously unreleased numbers, one of which, All the Little Things, is included in both live and studio versions. Most of this collection was recorded the California Tour of Summer 2003 (a fantastic tour, by the way) with a couple of exceptions, along with the studio version of Little Things to end the second CD. Something for everyone here, Blues, Funk, Pop, ballads.
Nina is perhaps one of the best singers alive today, certainly one of the most under-recognized. She is not only an amazing singer but she has the ability to add her voice as another instrument - check out Summertime and Elevator! Her songwriting talents are showcased on this collection, and I think that once you hear this double-CD set you'll be hopping over to her website to find out where she is playing! These discs will definitely keep finding their way into your CD player.

I cannot fathom a more perfect voice. Nina Storey can take your breath away, leave your heart pounding, or drift you into a hazy, ecstasy-filled torpor as you drift, drift, drift away with her voice. I picked up the rest of Nina's Work, but nothing compares to this collection from her live performance in Dallas. You can just imagine the presence this woman has on stage. From the distorted bass background in 'All The Little Things' to the lullaby of 'Summertime' Nina delivers a powerful, addicting series of vocals that will have you coming back for more, and more, and more . . .
