The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Mad about Baroque.......2007-02-12
This is a terrific CD. The music is breathtaking. Just buy IT !!!!!
The beauty of the songs brings tears to my eyes.......2002-08-21
Absolutely beautiful baroque music! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well."The Sparrow and the Gentle dove" is alone worth the price of the album! I can not stop playing it!
Brilliant.......2001-10-31
Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.
These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.
Be Welcome then, great Sirs (and Mesdames)........2001-10-20
If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.
This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.
A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.
it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.
Brilliant Purcell Disc .......2000-11-30
With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.
An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.
Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

old west songs.......2006-03-17
If you like Western songs then this is a great one to have.
No originality.......2006-02-24
If you like the Sons of the Pioneers then you have already heard the songs on this album, proformed almost identically. The only diference is Dale Evans, but since Roy was a member of the sons I guess it should be expected. If you haven't listened to any of the son's albums then Songs of the old west is worth your buck.
Tumbling Tumbleweeds?.......2004-05-18
Sorry, Boys!
Although I thought the world of Roy & Dale, this album won't cut the mustard. I only had to listen to the previews to tell you that. This is not one of the better Sons of The Pioneers with Roy & Dale albums. This is one of those "times are changin' so let's slick this one up" albums. They slicked it up alright. Slid right outta my fingers and back to the rack.
Sorry, but I like the albums that have the "old" sound to 'em. Like they were singin' on the trail...not in the studio, with all those fancy voice enhancers. Just my two cents worth.
Vaya Con Dios,
Sinful
Ride Down Happy Trails!.......2003-05-26
Roy and Dale sing a collection of songs from their movies which record the flavor of the Old West. This is a great CD for Saddle Pals of all ages.
Roy and Dale: Always!.......2001-06-22
If you are a Roy Rogers and Dale Evans fan, you might want to add this one to your collection. The songs are vintage King of the Cowboys and Queen of the West material. The backgrounds are sweet and maybe a little too "orchestrated" for my cup of tea, but the vocals are crisp and of excellent quality. Dale is featured with equal time on the C.D., and her voice is one of the most beautiful you'll ever hear. Roy's "Colorado Trail" is,in my opinion, worth the price of the album. I've often wondered what the world would be like if there were no Roy Rogers. Thanks to recordings like this one, we'll never have to find out! So, saddle up, there's open range ahead--where the air is clear, the sage is always in bloom, and cowboy music comes drifting through the gloamin'. Would-be cow punchers of all ages will like this collection. Trust me.

Product Description
"Many guitarists dabble in slide guitar, but the number of modern masters can probably be counted on one hand- Roy Rogers is surely one of them..."- Guitar Player Magazine. This Roy Rogers' first ever live CD. Drawing on inspiration and material from a career that spans decades of performing, Roy Rogers is considered one of the world1s leading parishioners of modern slide guitar. This is a Bandlink Enhanced CD which enables you to access new and exclusive Roy Rogers content- instant tour dates, news alerts, bonus music tracks, live video footage and direct chats with the Roy. Nominated for 8 Grammy1s for his production and performing work in the recording industry, Rogers1 has been immersed in the blues and roots scene and performing professionally since the ripe age of 13. This longtime Northern California resident picked up a nomination for the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in the Best Instrumentalist Guitar category last year for his release "Slideways" which hit #3 on the Blues Billboard chart. In addition, Rogers' recently co-wrote the song 3G1Nawin on It1 (on 'Silver Lining') with Bonnie Raitt which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category. Rogers is currently being featured on OSierra Center Stage1, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company-sponsored television series which seeks to bring exposure to underexposed American Roots and World musicians. The CD includes special guest performances by pianist Phil Aaberg, harmonica wizard Norton Buffalo, vocalist Shana Morrison and fiddler Tom Rigney. "I am first and foremost a performer and I have been playing with these players for a long time. It's great to lay it down and not have to bother with the added textures of studio polish- but keep it as gritty and fresh as possible. I also wanted to capture the band at this moment in time and I think we did that," adds Rogers.
Customer Reviews:
Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

Roy and The Sons of the Pioneers.......2005-08-23
If you want to listen to Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers together this is the set for you! Beautiful "cowboy" songs sung with perfect harmony along with Roy's well-practiced yodeling. You will recognize many of the songs even if you have never watched Roy Rogers on TV. This is the complete set of music for both present and future fans of the music of Roy Rogers.
These RCA Victor Studio Recordings Are Some of the Best!.......2001-05-26
Originally a trio, Roy Rogers co-founded the Sons of the Pioneers with Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer in 1934. The group's original 1934 version of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" (recorded on August 8, 1934 and featured on this album) was a No. 13 pop hit for the group on Decca Records.
Roy was still part of the Sons of the Pioneers when three Bob Nolan-written songs, "The Devil's Great-Grandson," "When the Golden Train Comes Down" and "Hold That Critter Down" were recorded in L.A. on December 14, 1937 for the ARC label, which shortly afterwards became Columbia Records. The Pioneer harmony is tight here with Bob Nolan and Lloyd Perryman sharing the lead vocal spotlight with Roy on all these tunes.
Roy was an accomplished square dance caller. RCA Victor used fiddler Spade Cooley & his Buckle Busters as Roy's backup band for a square dance tune called "Round That Couple Go Through and Swing." This recording was made in Los Angeles on September 3, 1940.
Afterwards, Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers went their separate ways. RCA Victor re-united them on August 10, 1945 and cut "Along the Navajo Trail." This version is one of the best recordings of this song ever made. The Pioneers limits itself to handling the backup vocals, while Perry Botkin's orchestra provides the music for the session. "Rock Me to Sleep in My Saddle" (recorded January 10, 1946) is an easy going tune with some nice steel guitar work and an infectious clip-clop beat. "I Can't Go On This Way" (also recorded January 10, 1946)is one of the best songs on the album--with its catchy lyrics and decidely pop music sound supplied by the Morton Scott orchestra with its violins, horns and accordion.
Roy Rogers had his own radio show by 1946 when he recorded "I'm Restless," "My Heart Went That-A-Way," and "My Chickashay Gal" on September 4, 1946 in Los Angeles. Country Washburne & his orchestra, who were regulars on Roy's radio program, provided the music on these recordings. "I'm Restless" effectively uses the same steel guitar element, as well as the familiar clip-clop beat again. The bouncy "My Heart Went That-A-Way" (written by Roy & future wife Dale Evans) and "My Chickashay Gal" (co-written by fiddler/bandleader Spade Cooley) are great little numbers too! One of the highlights on the entire album is "Dangerous Ground" (recorded February 24, 1947. This song features catch lyrics and a bouncy beat.
The rest of the tracks are well-produced studio recordings of songs featured on the radio show or in Roy's movies. "On the Old Spanish Trail" was recorded May 18, 1947 in Los Angeles, but "San Fernando Valley," "Roll On, Texas Moon," "Don't Fence Me In," "Yellow Rose of Texas" and the novelty song "Hawaiian Cowboy" were recorded on October 23 and 24, 1947 in Chicago. All of these Chicago tracks are well-done, but "Roll On, Texas Moon" is outstanding and is one of Roy's best recordings ever. Music was provided by the Dave Boehme orchestra.
On December 1, 1947, Roy Rogers & the Pioneers went into the studio in L.A. and recorded a new rendition of "Home on the Range" along with two songs which were featured in the Pecos Bill portion of the Disney animated feature film, "Melody Time." Both "Pecos Bill" songs are included in this album.
One of the songs which Roy recorded in the session, "Blue Shadows on the Trail," is regarded today as the best western recording ever made. This song is magical with its haunting lyrics and wonderful harmonies. All of the Pioneers were featured on the recording--Lloyd Perryman, Ken Carson, Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, Hugh & Karl Farr, Pat Brady and even Shug Fisher.
The song "Blue Shadows on the Trail" alone is worth the price of the album, but be forewarned. When Roy & the Pioneers sing: "Move along blue shadows, move along. Soon the dawn will come and you'll be on your way," this recording may touch your soul as it does mine. To this very day, every time I hear the Roy/Pioneers version of "Blue Shadows", I get goosebumps and wander back in time to when I was eight years old in Waco, TX. I'm sitting in a darkened theater watching the end of "Pecos Bill" when Roy & the Pioneers are singing "Blue Shadows" for a group of kids. The campfire is flickering, coyotes are wailing in the distance and I'm longing to be with Roy and the gang. What a memory and what a powerful recording that can have that effect on a 55 year old man. If you cherish this music like I do, you will want to add this album to your collection. Highly recommended.

Rhythm & Groove - Roy Rogers.......2003-03-12
This was one of those purchases you often make hoping that the disk is as good as some of the other titles you have by a particular artist. I had not seen any reviews on this disk and until recently I didn't know it existed. What an oversight. I've been a Roy Rogers fan for awhile but I was unaware of this recording and was pleasently surprised by its content. From the opening track this disk cooks. There simply is not one throwaway on this disk and I highly reccommend its purchase to loyal fans and first time listeners as well.
snakelike new orleans groove.......2000-09-26
this disc has the juke joint sweat and the color of bourbon st. my favorite songs" built for comfort" and " vida's place" have the best groove for me. polyrhythems keep them moving like thimbles on a washboard."wrong number" has a great hook and great for getting things done on your "to do" list. all in all a great time will be had by all!!

Blues producer and slide-guitar virtuoso Roy Rogers's eighth solo outing continues his exploration of roots music with an all-instrumental selection. Nearly an hour's worth of slide guitar is a rich confection, but the variety of styles and tones adopted here will keep the aficionado amused. A few of the cuts are simply grooves, rather than artfully prepared tunes, but the majority are blues based, and all are raunchy and uptempo. The opening "Avalanche" is a gloriously sweaty blueswailin' stomp. Other highlights include "Duckwalk," a rocking tribute to one of the unsung heroes of the slide guitar, Chuck Berry, and "There Is Only You," which climaxes in a manner reminiscent of some of Ry Cooder's best soundtrack instrumentals. Meters drummer Zigaboo Modeliste lends a New Orleans flavor, and Snortin' Norton Buffalo's harmonica is a key foil for Rogers's slide throughout. --Rob Stewart

Great Technician Not Great Music.......2007-03-08
Love a good slide guitar. This is a good player. After 5 minutes it just sounds like variations of the same lick over and over and over again. I would like to hear him play with others. Not enough on his own.
Worth adding to any blues collection.......2002-12-13
This album has a level of energy that I haven't found on many recent blues albums. Overall I think many of the other reviewers are being a bit too critical--this one is great for driving or background music during a loud party. I play it at work frequently, and almost every time someone will walk past and say "that's good stuff--who is it?" Considering some of the major disappointments I've purchased in the blues vein recently, this one deserves a solid recommendation.
Could be better.......2002-11-25
I bought this after hearing the NPR piece, and thinking that this sounded like my kind of album. But...
Roy Rogers is certainly a virtuoso guitarist and he knows his stuff too. In this album you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Clapton, Hendrix, even John Fahey. But the problem is that all the compositions are by Rogers, and while Rogers is a great guitar player, he is not much of a composer.
This album would serve very well as a cv for Rogers if he was applying for a position as a studio musician, and I'm sure he would get the job. There are also a couple of tracks that I really like, particularly #6 which is a kind of atmospheric blues with a nice harmonica accompaniment, and #10 that reminds me a bit of Thorn Tree In The Garden, the final instrumental track on Clapton's Layla album. But tracks 1-5 and 13 are tiresome and do not improve on repeated listening.
The album could be improved by cutting out tracks 1-5 and 13 and add some good standards like, maybe, some Hendrix numbers like Up From The Skies or Little Wing, and some classic blues or gospel tunes. The mark of a really good player is that he can take someone else's tune and make it his own, as for example Santana with Tito Fuente's Oy Como Va, or Peter Green's Black Magic Woman, come to think of it.
So maybe Rogers is not quite up to that stature? Well, that's why I haven't given this album five stars.
This sounds like a pretty dire review, but I do think that Rogers has a great album in him, though this is not it.
Artificial, Disappointing.......2002-11-14
Like others here, I ordered this CD after hearing the artist on NPR. He has chops but to paraphrase Albert King's complaint about other players, he "just plays fast, ain't got no soul." I don't hear it, anyway. The tracks are mildly entertaining but there's nothing moving or particularly rewarding, much less memorable. "Uninspiring" and "two-dimensional" are references that come to mind. I deleted it from my iPod after just a listening or two.
You Gotta Get This CD.......2002-10-31
Oh My God, Oh My GOD, OH MY GOD!!!!! I've listened to a lot of instrumental music in my life, but always thought "slide guitar - are you kidding, that's for backwater hillbillies". Boy was I wrong. I heard the NPR feature the other day on Roy Rogers and this album and was intrigued to say the least.
If you have ears (even one will do), you must run out right now and get this CD. It made me jump, it made my laugh, it made me cry, it made me want to live forever, it made me feel like I died and went to heaven. There are no words to describe it.

As quintessentially American as corn on the cob or the rodeo, the blues-streaked music created here by slide guitarist Roy Rogers and harmonica player Norton Buffalo marks their first studio collaboration since two early-'90s releases. Buffalo, a longtime Steve Miller Band member, and Rogers, who has played with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker, are so musically in synch that all 13 of their original songs on this CD serve as engaging testimonials to their friendship. Each West Coaster is a virtuoso on his instrument, but neither engages in showiness. Instead, their phrases combine in low-key expressions of faith, longing, struggle, and triumph. Rogers and Norton aren't outstanding singers, yet they get by without disrupting the special guitar-harp rapport at the crux of the music. Buffalo does deliver his all-time best studio vocal on "If I Were a King." --Frank-John Hadley

Roots Music Done Right!.......2002-09-25
Norton Buffalo and Roy Rogers once again team up for their brand of delta style root music. This Northern California duo seems to compliment each other in both vocal and musical harmonics. The disc consists of 13 originals comprised of 2 instrumentals and the vocal duties split equally with Buffalo singing the lead on 6 tracks and Rogers on 5 of the tracks. The acoustic duo doesn't break any new ground on this disc but their consistent roots style of music will be welcome listening to their fans.
