Old and in the Way.......2007-05-12
If you likes The Grateful Dead and if you like bluegrass, then this is something you have to have
Jerry Garcia and former Blue Grass Boys put on a good show.......2006-02-25
This awesome album combines the signature rough vocals of Jerry Garcia (who also plays banjo!) with the crisp mandolin sound of David Grisman, agile fiddling of Vassar Clements, and solid guitar of Peter Rowan in a collection that pulls heavily from the repertoire of Bill Monroe's old Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass fans and Garcia fans alike will enjoy this enthusiastic live performance by Old and In the Way.
Just gets better and better ..........2002-01-17
I bought this album because it's considered a classic, and because I love the fiddle stylings of Vassar Clements. At first I was irked by some out-of-tune vocal harmonies (it's live, after all). But I kept the album on and set the CD player to continuous play. Well, the second time it started at the beginning, I was hooked. I listened a couple more times and had to force myself to turn it off. It is really a true gem of an album. Vassar's fiddling is top-notch, a great example of his classic licks and style. Garcia, Grisman and Rowan also rock. This is indeed a classic bluegrass album, and should be in any respectable collection.
Bluegrass lovers.......1999-07-28
This CD is great! If you are not a bluegrass fan, it will certainly make you one! Some of Jerry Garcia's finest work without his electric guitar. He sure picks a mean banjo!
top notch stompin' fun!.......1999-02-11
Listen to this classic, bluegrass sound and you'll be hard pressed not to become a foot stompin', leg-smackin bluegrass fanatic in no time. This is blue ribbon bluegrass!

Vince Gill Sings My Heart.......2005-07-29
I love Vince Gill's music. His sweet, mellow vocals embrace you and take you on a journey of heart and soul. His musical versatility makes him a singer for all seasons. I highly recommend "High Lonesome Sound"!
Diverse, Well Written - Appeals to Country & Mainstream Fans.......2004-11-10
In the 1990s, the Country Music began to go through some transitions. Country music which had for the most part stayed in a vacuum began to go mainstream and embrace other genres of music. As a result, the sound started to change. By the end of the 90s, Country Music had full blown established music superstars in Shania Twain and Faith Hill. One may argue that Twain and Hill have deviated from their Country Music roots - and to some extent I can agree with that argument. I do think that other Country Music artists have found a way to go toward the mainstream while keeping to their Country Music roots. One such artist is Vince Gill, who proves his album "High Lonesome Sound" that it possible to go mainstream and keep to the roots of Country Music. In addition, Gill also proves that the end product can be something that is very enjoyable.
By no means do I consider myself a Country Music expert. The nice thing about "High Lonesome Sound" is that I believe it caters to a fan like myself that may not be deep into Country Music, but can appreciate many of the elements Country Music can bring to the table. While Gill's Country Music could be directed to a more casual fan like myself, I think Gill does an admirable job at addressing the fan who is deeper when it comes to the Country Music genre. Vince Gill also isn't afraid to explore some different directions - and I think this goes a long way for helping this become more appealing to the mainstream fan.
Gill assembles a nice cast of studio musicians to help him on this effort. The most noteable musician is Leland Sklar on Bass. Sklar is best known for being a part of Phil Collins "Serious" band. He was the long hair, long bearded bass player. Sklar does an admirable job on Bass on this collection. There are also some noteable vocalists that help Gill out. Patty Loveless does harmony vocals on "Given More Time" while Shelby Lynne lends vocals on the tune "You and You Alone". Lynne's vocals really connect well with Gill and I wish they would do more work together. Other vocalists, Jeff White and Kim Richey lend some terrific background vocals on multiple tracks.
The opening track is "One Dance With You". When you listen to "One Dance with You", there immediately is a feeling for a country sound. However, there almost is a Doo-Wop-ish type of theme to this song. This Doo Wop-ish theme can be heard in the melody as well as some of the names that are in the lyrics ("Peggy Sue", "Mary Lou", etc). This is a very nice track and appealed to a casual fan like myself.
The title track "High Lonesome Sound" appears on the collection twice. This is a very Country sounding tune that is a very catchy tune. This song is the second track and the last track. The difference is the latter track has Alison Krauss and Union Station helping out with this song. You will hear a stronger fiddle element on the latter track that will give it a much more of a "Dixie Music" feel to it. Alison Krauss plays fiddle on that track and also lends background vocals to both of the tracks. I find the earlier track is the one that will appeal to a more mainstream fan, but the latter track isn't bad either.
The most popular track is the ballad "Pretty Little Adriana". This is definitely a cross-over track. Although it does sound more Pop/Adult Contemporary-ish - the gentle melodies and powerful vocals of this song I still think remain true to the Gill's Country Music Roots.
Another song where Gill does things a bit different is the song "Down to New Orleans". While Gill explored a Dixie sound on the latter version of "High Lonesome Sound", Gill integrates some Jazz and Blues sounding elements into a definite "New Orleans" feel of a song. Once again, Gill doesn't abandon his Country Music Roots and the end result is another great product.
Gill also proves he can be an outstanding storyteller. This is shown on the track "Jenny Dreamed Of Trains". This is an oustanding written song by both Vince Gill and Guy C. Clark. A lot of this song reminds me of Dan Fogelberg. It has a Dan Fogelberg-like soft piano introduction for about one minute. The song then proceeds to be a story in which he tells the story of a girl named Jenny who had a love of trains and then deals with the decline of the railroads in the U.S.. Another song in which Gill tells a nice story is "Given More Time" in which Gill portrays himself as a Working Man trying to balance time with his family. The song "Worlds Apart" is also very well written and deals with a couple going through empty nest syndrome and starting to question the love between them. There is a pause a little after 4 minutes into the song - giving it a very powerful effect.
Another good track that is very enjoyable is "A Little More Love" is another example of a Country Music song that appealed to a mainstream fan like myself.
The liner notes do contain all of the lyrics to all of the tunes. They do a nice job at lining up the studio musician credits to each song. This album pretty much surprised me. I originally wanted it for the song "Pretty Little Adriana", but I ended up discovering so much more. I especially got hooked on the title track. I also discovered what a diverse musician and talent that Vince Gill is. I think this is the perfect album to introduce yourself to Vince Gill and I think Gill fans will not be disappointed with this collection. I'd recommend adding it to your collection.
Maintaining the expected quality.......2004-06-10
Vince has a very distinctive voice, which he uses to good effect on this interesting collection. Vince wrote or co-wrote all the songs, which are an excellent mix of ballads, mid-tempo and up-tempo songs.
Perhaps the strangest song is Jenny dreamed of trains, about a girl living near a deserted railroad. I wonder what inspired Vince to write this song, which was covered by John Denver for his train song album, All aboard.
Two versions of the up-tempo title track are included, both with Vince singing lead and Alison Krauss sing harmony but with one featuring Alison Krauss's band, Union Station, giving the song a bluegrass treatment. Apart from Alison, other harmony singers featured on the album include Kim Richey (A little more love), Patty Loveless (Given more time) and Shelby Lynne (You and you alone).
Other outstanding songs include Pretty little Adriana and Down in New Orleans, but every song here is worth hearing.
While I don't regard this as Vince's best album (my favorite is When I call your name), it has much to commend it. No self-respecting fan of Vince's music should be without it.
My First Vince CD Won't Be My Last.......2003-02-28
I bought this because of "Pretty Little Adriana" and "Worlds Apart", which are two of the prettiest songs I have ever heard from anybody. I ended up discovering some of Vince's most outstanding material that never got the attention it deserved. "You and You Alone" is a really good love song, and the 2 versions of "High Lonesome Sound" are one of a kind. I would recommend this album in a second, especially if you like songs with plenty of heart and true emotion.
a classic from Vince Gill.......2003-02-27
A very nice album from Vince Worlds apart are a classic and one of his greatest songs definately get it if you are vince gill fan he has one of the nicest smoothest voices in theis album so definately listen to it

Though his outlaw persona defined the late Waylon Jennings in the minds of many, this tribute underscores the expansive range of both his artistry and his influence. As with Dualtone's Dressed in Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash, producers Dave Roe and Chuck Mead (from BR549) go beyond the obvious in both artist and song selection. Guy Clark's laid-back acoustic rendition of "Good Hearted Woman" makes the song sound like one of his own, while the sophistication of supper-club piano informs "Wurlitzer Prize (I Don't Want to Get Over You)" as interpreted by Norah Jones. Punk-rock renegades John Doe and Henry Rollins, roots-rocker Dave Alvin, and country mainstays Cowboy Jack Clement (in a trans-generational duet with Pam Tillis) and Kris Kristofferson all find a kindred spirit in Jennings. With "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," Robert Earl Keen subjects one of Jennings's best-known anthems to the album's most radical rearrangement, but many of the interpretations are more faithful to the originals. Junior Brown's "Nashville Rebel" could pass as a Waylon soundalike, and Radney Foster slips as comfortably into "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)" as if it were favorite flannel shirt. --Don McLeese

A Fan Girl's Dream Come True.......2007-03-16
I've been a Waylon fan since I was a little girl listening to my Grandmother's vinyls. I've been a Rollins fan since I was a teen punk. To have them together is awesome. I was going to skip this, then I saw Rollins on it and had to go for it. I gave it 3 stars for the lackluster Norah Jones. Dragged the whole album down. I'm sure many disagree.
A Nice Way To Remember Waylon.......2007-02-08
This Album Got A LOT Of Great Songs That WE All Know From Waylons CD`s
There's Always Another Way To Do Things. . .Your Way........2006-04-09
Waylon Jennings was an influential American country singer and guitarist, born in Littlefield, Texas. He taught himself to play guitar as a young child, and formed his first band two years later. He worked as a DJ throughout his high school years, dropping out of high school to look for a career in music. During his time working as a DJ, he met and befriended Buddy Holly.
"On the night of February 3, 1959 (The Day the Music Died) the airplane carrying Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (aka The Big Bopper) crashed outside of Mason City, Iowa, killing all passengers. Jennings had given his seat to Richardson, who had the flu and desperately needed rest. In his 1996 autobiography, Jennings admitted for the first time that in the years afterward, he felt severe guilt and responsibility for the crash. After Jennings gave up his seat, Holly had jokingly told him that he hoped the tour bus would stall. Jennings replied, with equal jocularity, that he hoped the plane would crash; these words would haunt him for years."
Wikipedia.com
Tribute albums are the way many of us are introduced to artists, and 2003's 'Lonesome, On'ry and Mean: A Tribute to Waylon Jennings" was released a year after Jenning's death. This CD serves as an introduction and tribute to one of the greats of both country music and American popular music in the 20th century. Some of the songs are performed by Waylon's friends Kris Kristofferson on "I Do Believe" and Junior Brown's "Nashville Rebel" or even sung by their songwriters Jack Clement's "Let's All Help the Cowboys Sing the Blues". There's no shortage of love for Waylon here. You do not get more alternate-country than the outlaw Waylon Jennings and his music. This is the sort of music that gives country its true message. Guy Clark opens the CD in fine fettle with "Good Hearted Woman" and is followed by that melodious woman, Nanci Griffith, on the excellent "You Asked Me To." New artists are also featured and Norah Jones sings the "Wurlitzer Prize." Her lovely voice blends so well with piano, guitar and bass. "Amanda" with Dave Alvin gives is a great surprise here. He has a special knack for old country and blues.
Junior Brown sings "Nashville Rebel," a song that reflects Jenning's personality. He has things to do and things to say in my own way. The next track written by Jennings, "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," tells us that he had a new voice and attitude when he took to country music. Carlene Carter gives us a beautiful rendition of another of his songs, "I've Always Been Crazy." Although not written by Jennings, "Luckenbach, Texas" is as close as you get to a biography of the country outlaws. The title track comes at the end of the CD, performed by Henry Rollins.
Waylon Jennings was well known for his hard life and ways. He had a cocaine habit that he was able to overcome, but his reputation has an "outlaw" has grown to epic proportions. He and Johnny Cash, Kris Kristoffersen, and Willie Nelson became the outlaws, and performed on CDs and concerts across the US. He and his last wife Jessie Colter, had a son, Shooter Jennings, who carries on his parent's singing tradition.
For all his cult successes, Jennings was modest to the point of even putting down his own guitar playing. "Hell, I ain't no great guitar player," he said. "I just play my stuff. I'm very self-conscious about my guitar playing for some reason. I'm a singer, I never practice on my guitar."
This is a CD of remembrance to Waylon Jennings, and it lives up to his memory. Highly Recommended. prisrob April 8, 2006
A Fitting Tribute.......2004-03-10
This tribute album is filled with beautiful renditions of Waylon Jennings' songs. Dave Alvin's "Amanda", Nanci Griffith's "You Asked Me To", and Allison Moorer's "Storms Never Last" are exceptionally good. Junior Brown's worn, tattered vocals in "Nashville Rebel" sound remarkably like Waylon Jenning himself. The tribute to Jennings' life and music contained in the liner notes is moving; each of the performers briefly comments upon Jennings and his influence. However, as a tribute to Jennings, Kris Kristofferson's rendition of "I Do Believe" is worth the price of the album in and of itself.
Fine Set.......2004-01-27
This tribute to Waylon is a fine set. The musicians all seem to have an affinity for Jennings' music, even some of the less obvious choices. Guy Clark is one of the country outlaws; and "Good Hearted Woman" is given an affectionate dusting. Nancy Griffith's "You Asked Me To" highlights the Jennings/Shaver lovely melody, without grandstanding. Norah Jones' reading of "Wurlitzer Prize (I Don't Want to Get Over You)" is a real high point on this excellent set with her bluesy piano giving the track a new sound. Joe Doe relates to the punk side of Waylon's persona and smokes sassily through "Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line." "Nashville Rebel" has a great trad country feel with Junior Brown's deep bass voice and Lloyd Green's steel guitar diving deep into country. Radney Foster with Roger Credager does a nice job on the catchy "Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)". Allison Moorer does a dynamite job with Jessi Colter's gorgeous tune "Storms Never Last," highlighting the rare softer side Waylon showed. Kris Kristofferson sang "I Do Believe" at Waylon's funeral; his version here is heartfelt with a great slow build. "Lock, Stock & Teardrops" by Alejandro Escovedo works extremely well. The liner notes give great information on Waylon. I forgot he was part of Buddy Holly's band; so the Cricket's version of "Waymore's Blues" fits well. Although it might seem unusual, I really like Henry Rollins' rocking version of the title tune. This is a nice set that Dualtone has put together, a tribute to one of our country greats. Enjoy!

This one will grow on you . . . .......2006-09-17
This is the album that Waylon begins to break away from the packaged country sound to his own style. Although he does'nt make a clean break with this album, there are some songs that show his talent and what is to come. Of course, "Lonesome On'ry and Mean" is the ultimate Waylon song. Other songs complementing this album are "Freedom to Stay, Lay it Down, Good TIme Charlie ". . . and "Laid Back Country Picker, and Big, Big Love" assist as well. The others are "Ehhh, I could take em or leave em". "Pretend I Never Happened" is not a song that has done much for me, in fact I skip over it. In my humble opinion, it is the worst song on this album and is much overrated. This Album is worth getting. It is an integral part of the Waylon story.
"Outlaw" country coming into its own..........2005-04-19
This is one of the classic "outlaw" country albums, with two of Waylon's greatest performances ever -- "Lonesome, On'ry & Mean," and "Just Pretend I Never Happened," as well as some off-the-radar gems, such as his version of Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues" and Mickey Newbury's "Frisco Mabel Joy," which is a superior reading of a highly regarded song. It's worth noting that the best songs on here are the ones Waylon produced himself; Nashville studio heavies like Danny Davis and Ronny Light (who also contributed to this album) were really just in the way, proving that all that jive that Waylon was saying at the time about "creative control" was 100% right on the money...
If you're checking Waylon out, this disc's a must-have.
Waylon At His Best.......2004-01-18
"Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean" is Waylon Jennings at his best. If it weren't for the fact that he recorded "Honky Tonk Heroes" right afterwards -- which is, hands down, the greatest record of all time, in any category you care to name -- this album would probably get the attention it deserves.
"Lonesome, On'ry, and Mean" was the album on which Waylon decisively broke away from the "Nashville sound" and started to define what "outlaw" music was about. Waylon was moving into uncharted territory, and a sound which I can only describe as the sound of raw freedom echoes from the Telecaster snarl of the first track.
This album includes songs written by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Mickey Newbury, and Kris Krisfofferson, and some of the musicians include Billy Ray Reynolds and Randy Scruggs on guitars, Charlie McCoy on harmonica, Ralph Mooney on steel, and Richie Albright on drums.

Supercharged Bluegrass.......2004-11-09
The Lonesome River Band at the time of this recording included Dan Tyminski on mandolin and lead vocals, complimenting Ronnie Bowman's voice. Alison Krauss wrote the liner notes for this CD and remarked on the magic way that those two voices blend - just a few years before hiring Dan to join her own Union Station. In the time since Dan has received as much acclaim as any male vocalist in Bluegrass, notably providing the singing voice for George Clooney in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"
The LRB changed personnel every couple of years, completely changing everyone except Sammy Shelor, who has played his hard-drivin' award winning banjo for them since 1990. Tim Austin on guitar completed the quartet for this version of the band and it is no understatement to say that this was an "All-Star" band: The Bluegrass equivalent of the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan of the same era.
"Carrying the Tradition" was an appropriate title because the style on this recording honored the roots of Bluegrass while still showcasing innovative arrangements that make you sit up and take notice. The first time I heard this band was on the radio - "The Game is Over" was being played and I remember thinking "I don't recognize this band - but they're as good as anyone in Bluegrass...." I rushed to the music store to get my hot little hands on this recording and couldn't wait to slip it into the car's player. "Sittin' On Top of the World" came roaring out and my eyes bugged out, my jaw dropped and I must have looked like something out of one of those old Tex Avery cartoons.
This album was a landmark for Bluegrass. Get it!
Superb Bluegrass - not a bad cut on it - serious Bluegrass........1999-08-06
Having listened to Bluegrass for over 40 years and the traditional sounds of Flatt and Scruggs, Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, the Lonesome River Band has proven once again the precision and beauty that is traditional Bluegrass. This CD has given us the pleasure of showcasing a young band that has all the power and drive of the best in Bluegrass history. The mix of the old with the new is wonderful and the songs tie themselves together with comfort and technical virtuosity. Keep this CD in the front of your collection because you are going to play it a lot.
A terriffic CD for those fans of "newgrass".......1999-02-14
Don't come looking here for the downbeat, I'm gonna kill my dog and then there's a bullet for me kind of bluegrass that used to exist, this album is for the most part just hot pickin' and understandable vocals, nothing too nasal here!
Simply Put : Some of the Best Bluegrass ever recorded.......1999-01-07
Coming from a fan of both traditional and contemporary bluegrass, I can honestly say that this CD contains some of the best pickin' and singin' ever captured in a studio recording. Buy it, you won't be sorry, enough said.
One of the best bluegrass albums out there!.......1998-12-17
This CD is full of hard-driving bluegrass. The Lonesome River Band plays a well mixed blend of traditional and modern styles. I just can't say enough good things about them. If you love bluegrass, you'll love this CD!

Lonesome Standard Time Review........2006-11-10
Kathy Mattea has a pretty voice, and this was the first album she made after recoveing from an operation on her voice. It acutally came out stronger than before. Her interpetation of Larry Cordle and Jim Rushings Lonesome Standard Time is great, as well as Knee Deep In A River. An album with good songs.
A forgotten gem.......2003-08-04
Kathy's most successful years were the late eighties, but this 1992 album is every bit as good as the brilliant albums she recorded back then and the style of this album is similar.
The title track has a very upbeat tune that defies the sadness of its lyrics, but it is in that sense typical of the album - the music is bright and cheery, but the lyrics are often about loneliness and yearning.
The most famous cover here, Amarillo, is an amusing song about a woman who loses her man to a jukebox and a pinball machine. Amarillo was an Emmylou song that first appeared on her Elite hotel album in 1976.
Kathy's music may not be as popular today as it was in the late eighties, but it still sounds as good as ever and this is a fine example of her work despite the absence of any of her really big country hits.
Mix of gospel and classical country harmonies.......2001-10-14
This CD is a great mix of pure country and gospel tracks. The songs seem heart-felt and the voice is one-of-a kind.
Listen to this CD--and fall in love with Kathy's voice.......2000-04-05
That was the first CD from Kathy Mattea we had, and all the family, old and young, just fell in love with that voice. We still feel the need to listen to it over and over again. I wish she were better known in Europe and came here on a tour!
An Honest Voice.......2000-02-14
Kathy Mattea does not possess the same cover-model's looks that bless the likes of Shania Twain, but her voice and her material are more substantial than most of what one hears from the current crop of "airbrush beauties" that Nashville is dealing these days. Her interpretations on this CD are honest and mature, relating some common human experiences that are accessible to just about everyone. The wistful ballads "Seeds" and "Knee-Deep in a River" are emotionally affecting without being sappy, and the title cut and "33, 45, 78" are clever without being cutesy. No culls at all on this one. Some CDs are interesting for a while, but soon disappear. This one will stay in my "often-played" stack. I even plan to cover a couple of the cuts myself at my next gig.

Best Album You've Never Heard.......2005-09-15
This is such a wonderful album. Unfortunately for a while it was very difficult to find. Thankfully as Jack's popularity grew, so did the demand for them to bring back this album. Jack does a great job covering Jerry Jeff Walker's "My Old Man" and adds classics of his own such as "Still Got Scars," "One Light Town," "Beat Up Ford," "Crazy Like The Moon," and "Younger Days." An album you can listent to over and over. If you are a lover of grat music get this and every other Jack Ingram album.
Asking the Right (Lonesome) Question.......2002-04-14
A solid record that slips through the cracks, maybe because some of the material appears again in his other recordings. Still, Jack Ingram's music's meant for driving, and this easily overlooked record lends itself to just that. Give it a closer listen, and you'll discover how the theme of restlessness sits behind most of Ingram's work. His characters are always on the move, driving through one light towns, looking for work, searching.
Life's mostly attitude and driving, he writes, and this record shows he believes it. The same guy who named his band after a beat-up Ford has the good sense to cover Jerry Jeff Walker's "My Old Man," and I believe this is one of Ingram's very finest songs and it's easily this record's highlight. When he sings, "My old man, had a rambling soul," you'll hear Jack Ingram at his best. Almost conversational, instrumentation subdued, something much like old Merle Haggard but still remarkably good on its own. Listening to this record on 441 through south Georgia, heading north through Fargo and Homerville and Douglas and Dublin, the miles and minutes flew past.

Very fun.......2007-04-23
This is quite exciting traditional country. The singing is quite excellent as is the guitar playing. However the production is not great by today's standards. This group deserves a better recording.
too much fun.......2007-04-22
plain good fun, with some fine guitar playing, and a creative lyric or two - with pretty fine vocals
alt.western.......2007-03-08
i first heard these two on samantha murphy's SMtv internet pod cast and immediately had to go to amazon to buy the city. i real mix of tradition western swing sounds with gritty lyrics. not to say lynda's voice is anything but smooth as silk. take a leep and pick this cd up, i don't think you will be sorry.

Blue Highway.......2007-01-27
This is a terrific compilation of sides recorded by Blue Highway that appeared on 3 previous Rebel CDs (IT'S A LONG, LONG ROAD; MIDNIGHT STORM; and WIND TO THE WEST), all from the mid-late 1990s. Shawn Lane and Wayne Taylor share vocal leads, and their high-pitched stylings are attractive though not particularly powerful. The groups material is very appealing: songs such as HE WALKED ALL THE WAY HOME (inspired by the book/movie COLD MOUNTAIN perhaps?) and BEFORE THE COLD WIND BLOWS are interesting ballads that tell compelling stories. THE ROUNDER is about Jesse James and it and BETWEEN THE ROWS end abruptly with starltling (and good) effect. LONESOME PINE has a beautiful and haunting minor C section that is a highlight of the CD. There are also a couple of instrumentals included which reflect older mountain string band influences. This is a most enjoyable CD that makes this listener eager to check out the group's earlier releases in full.
A very good sampler & great introduction to some of their best music previously released from 1995-98.......2006-05-15

"Lonesome Pine" is a collection of 3-5 cuts apiece from three Blue Highway albums on the Rebel label: It's A Long, Long Road (1995), Wind To The West (1996), Midnight Storm (1998). So this compilation of previously released material is a fine "Best of" retrospective for the band from Johnson City, Tennessee that performed its first gig on New Year's Eve in 1994. It's great to see internationally-renowned bluegrass groups as prolific as Blue Highway releasing projects with their best hits. Blue Highway's original lineup included Tim Stafford (guitar), Wayne Taylor (bass), Shawn Lane (mandolin/fiddle), Tony Brown (banjo/fiddle), and Rob Ickes (dobro). Brown doesn't appear on this album, as Jason Burleson took his place and plays banjo or mandolin on these cuts. In 1996, Blue Highway won IBMA awards for "Emerging Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" (for "It's a Long Long Road"). In 1997, they won the IBMA award for "Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year" for the song "God Moves in a Windstorm." I wish that song would've been included in this set of hits. In 1998, Burleson left the band and was replaced by Tom Adams who also doesn't appear in any of these cuts. Burleson returned to the band two years later.
Over the years, Blue Highway has carved out their own niche in bluegrass. Their musical vision has always incorporated accessible melodies, bright lyricism, and interesting dynamics. They can't go wrong with songs like "Blue Ridge Mountain Girl." Taylor's, Stafford's and Lane's songwriting abilities are showcased. Ickes and Burleson have also penned some groovy instrumentals, but none are included in this set. Instead, they choose the old-time "Cold Frost Morn" and rootsy "Flannery's Dream" for the instrumental offerings here. The band has a side with considerable emotional depth, with moving songs like "Some Day" and "Before the Cold Wind Blows." The former, arranged a cappella, shows clearly how splendid their vocalizing can be. The latter, along with the title cut, are both Wayne Taylor originals and are among the band's most requested numbers. Since this CD features previously released material, I wish that the producers would have given us just a bit more than a 43-minute set. I would have lobbied for inclusion of some other originals such as Taylor's "Keen Mountain Prison" and Stafford's "Find Me Out on a Mountain Top." Being from Oregon, I've always liked Stafford's song called "Clear Cut," another hit that isn't included here. Jack Tottle has contributed a fair amount of material to Blue Highway's repertoire, and I was glad that they included one of his to close the album.
No slouches on their instruments, the guys in the band are award winners. All told, they've released 6 albums, been nominated for a Grammy, topped the Bluegrass Unlimited chart, won a Dove Award and 11 IBMA awards (either as a band or individually). Blue Highway boasts an impressive track record as a contemporary bluegrass band. "Lonesome Pine" only tells part of the story with its documentation of the wave they rode in that time period from 1995-1998. All three of the individual albums sampled were given my highest marks in the past. However, being a compilation, I'm giving this CD a "B+" only because I simply think it should have included about 17 more minutes of their fine music. "Lonesome Pine" is a very good sampler and great introduction to their music. This 13-track reasonably-priced sampler could very well lead you to purchase all three of the albums from which the cuts are taken. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
