Best known for 1951's "The Wild Side of Life," Thompson wed prewar Western swing to postwar honky-tonk and created a sound that proved viable both on the radio (where swing was usually ignored) and in the dance halls. He kept it up with a steady string of hits that included beer-drinking ballads, heart songs, folkish material, and flat-out novelties; though he plied a distinctly Texas sound, he was never shy about looking to the Southeast for material. His bands, often joined in the studio by guitarist Merle Travis, framed his vocals perfectly without ever taking the spotlight off the singer (and also cut instrumental hits such as "Wildwood Flower" on their own). With 20 tracks, this is the best single-CD sampler of Thompson's early work. --John Morthland

The authentic original 40's & 50's Country + TRUE Country.......2007-05-28
I remember him from way back there in the late 40's to now. And whenever I couldn't buy anymore of his albums. That's ok, I just listened to my LPs and cassettes. Now I'm loading up on CDs. It's got everything: swing, western, honky tonk, blues and even twang(y) and "through the nose." I LOVE IT. I know better than to hope it'll come back. Because: it can NEVER be improved upon. I can live very well with what I've got. I've never seen the first thing bad written about him. He always seemed to be a very likable fella when I'd see him on TV (rarely), but we did use to get the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights on TV and the radio. And then there were the individual shows, like Porter, The Wilburn Brothers, and Hee Haw, etc, that he would be on.
Top Grade Honky Tonk.......2007-04-17
This is a real cracker of an album and at the price it's a true bargain. Some call Hank a Western Swing artist however I cannot agree with this moniker. He's much more in the honky tonk mould and quick listen to this album confirms such. Apart from the monster (in depth and price) Bear Family set this is the best Hank Thompson album out there. It covers his period with Capitol Records (1947 - 1961) and, while he made some excellent music after this time, he had his biggest hits with Capitol under the production guidance of Ken Nelson. This album covers just about all those hits plus a couple of Brazos Valley Boys instrumentals (which are more in the Bob Wills Western Swing mould). Hank wrote or co-wrote 12 of the numbers here and shows he was not only a great singer and arranger but a superb songwriter. Another interesting aspect to this album is the obvious development of the artist over time and the improvement in recording technology and techniques. Also, the Brazos Valley Boys were one hot band that could swing it out when required and throughout supply complex, interesting and sympathetic support. Merle Travis supplies his trademark guitar work to many of the songs and he is in fine form indeed. The CD comes with a very informative booklet and the sound/mastering is top shelf making it an essential purchase. I encourage anyone looking for an album of 50's honky tonk in the, then, more "commercial" style at an absolute bargain low price to pop this in the trolley when next ordering music from Amazon. Highly Recommended.

Great 40's and 50's Country.......2007-01-03
This is a respectable collection of popular songs by Hank Thompson and The Brazos Valley Boys, with release dates going from the 1940's to 1960. In my opinion, he hit his peak in the 60's, but this collection clearly shows the progression of early country music, in both style and lyric development. I recall Hank and his band as huge, but my view may have been skewed by my rural Texas surroundings. The later songs exhibit the honky tonk influence, which I consider the golden era of country. If you collect vintage country, this is indeed essential. I had all these on vinyl but the years took their toll, so it was great to have another chance at them.
Vintage Hank Thompson.......2006-11-10
This is a really great CD for those who appreciate the old timey country-western.............it is primarily swing and toe-tappin! If you enjoy Hank Williams, you will love this CD. I highly recommend it! I am very pleased with the CD....the fast service and the continued excellence of Amazon.....................

Any one as old as me (60) will like this if they like country at all.
Texas swing music at it's best.......2007-05-26
This is an excellent sampling of Hank Thompson's best. "Oklahoma Hills", "Squaws Along The Yukon", "Six Pack To Go", "Rub-a-dub-dub" are all first-rate country songs that could hold up well today if sung by the right person (George Strait, for example). H.T. has a unique style and a voice that is instantly recognizable by country music fans.
Best Hank Thompson.......2007-01-11
My husband has been looking for years for a Hank Thompson CD. He is so happy with this one because it has all his greatest hits.
Great Music.......2006-02-26
These songs are classics and still hold up just as well for this generation of listeners as they did for my parents and grandparents.
A fine collection.......2005-10-05
If you take away the cigarettes and whiskey from the voice of Ernest Tubb, and add the smoothness of Charlie Walker, you end up with Hank Thompson. This greatest hits compilation is a "must have" for fans of true country & western music. Hank rarely strayed from the 2 1/2 minute song, and on this album are 12 of his best, including the infamous "Wild Side of Life" and "A Six Pack to Go". I'm not sure if you'll ever hear the politically incorrect "Squaws along the Yukon" on today's wussy Country Radio, but there was a time when country music was not force fed to the masses of the great unwashed. Thank God for Hank Thompson's contribution.

Ever since rock rose to dominate popular music, it has fallen upon country music to deal with matters of maturity. While rock rings with anthems of young love and angst, country croons about marriage, kids, and holding on to the farm. Who better, then, to bring us joyfully engaging tales of aging than country legend Hank Thompson, who's got a half-century of honky-swing classics behind him? Is there sex after 60? Check out "Sting in This Ole Bee," where he sings, "I may be in retirement, on Social Security, but if there's honey in that hive there's a sting in this ole bee." Tunes such as "Condo in Hondo" and "New Wine in Old Bottles" continue the theme in similar lighthearted fashion. Only jazz artist Mose Allison writes and sings about growing old with as much warmth and wit. Rounding out the program are some novelty tunes and some pop ("Scotch and Soda") and country ("In the Jailhouse Now") standards. Wherever Thompson wanders, Lloyd Maines's perky production and Thom Bresh's terrific Travis-style fingerpicking (he's Merle Travis's son, after all) keep the proceedings as honest and weathered as a desert roadhouse. --Michael Ross

LEAVE THE AUDIENCE BEGGING FOR MORE..........2000-07-29
Hank Thompson can do NO WRONG! With that unabashed admission from this Thompson fan of thirty years, I can get on to my thoughts on "Seven Decades." My thirty years are just over half of this astounding legend's 54-year recording career, leading me to disbelieve anyone can sound this good at 74. Believe me, I tried to find flaws in the generous variety of country songs new and old, but except for a rare scratchiness on maybe two high notes, I couldn't find anything. Hank's selection of music for this CD illuminates all the corners of this man's wonderful career, but much of the material is "New Wine" to his followers. Hank continues to write and sing with a rich and tender love for the music that he has created, while preserving his humorous edge.Unlike the critically acclaimed and marvelous "Hank and Friends" CD from '97, this effort concentrates on the voice and, for the most part, lyrics of Hank Thompson, with a just-right seasoning of a pair of female background singers, plus a romping Western Swing track led by guitarist Tom Bresh. Still,Thompson has always been willing to venture out of the friendly confines of his own material, and gives us a sensitive, tear-inducing treatment of "Dinner For One,Please James." I think the best-written song on the CD is "New Wine In Old Bottles," but my personal favorites are "Wreck of the Old '97" and "Nancy Ann's Hotel."Don't overlook the liner notes, either, articulately written by the Hall of Famer himself. Then, when a young person tells you he likes country music, hand him this CD. After he hears a few tracks of "Seven Decades," if he responds with a broad smile and begs for more....he is truly a country music fan.
Plenty of swing and sting left this ol' bee.......2000-07-23
Fifty-three years after his first waxing for Capitol, Country Hall of Famer Hank Thompson is making some of the most vital Western Swing and Honky-Tonk around. Now in his 70s, Thompson's bravado is fully intact (if not more than a bit piqued by the ravages of age), and the hand-picked backing band (including guitarist Thom Bresh picking brilliantly in the style of his father - and one-time Thompson band member - Merle Travis) keep step nicely with the old man.
In addition to the steel-laden honky-tonk tunes (including the superb lead track, "Sting in This Ole Bee"), Thompson stretches out on his cover selections. Jimmie Rodgers' "In the Jailhouse Now" and Cindy Walker's "Triflin' Girl" are mated with less obvious picks such as the Kingston Trio's "Scotch and Soda" and Nat King Cole's pop oddity, "Dinner for One, Please James." Eduardo Lopez's accordion adds a Tejano flavor to the retirement themed "Condo in Hondo," and the tales of "Abdul Abulbul Amir" and "The Night Miss Nancy Ann's Hotel for Single Girls Burned Down" brings to mind the stories of Tom T. Hall and U. Utah Phillips.
Thompson has the same drive (and ability) to make great music that he had for his first session in 1947. Lucky for us he can find players that can keep up and a record label that's not hung up on radio hits.

The best of "Honky Tonk".......2006-12-27
"Classic Country: Honky Tonk Heroes" is a 2-cd set from Time Life Music. I really appreciate the huge "Classic Country" collection of cds which this is a part. It is really hard to find the great old country music songs. Honky Tonk is definitely a special niche within country music, sad songs about guys who spend way to much time in barrooms. The artists on this set are true greats: Hank Williams Sr., Webb Pierce, Red Foley, Buck Owens, Conway Twitty, and many others. Some of these songs will be familiar old favorites to fans of "Country Gold Saturday Night", such as "Crazy Arms" by Ray Price, "I Can't Stop Loving You" by Don Gibson, and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" by Freddy Fender. My husband, born during the Great Depression in a family of Okies and Arkies, absolutely loves these sad cheatin' songs, and even I got a kick out of hearing the original "Honky Tonk Man" by Johnny Horton which was remade by my favorite, Dwight Youkum.

I loved this album! It has so many good songs and artists - just wish that I could find the other volumes.

BRIDGING THE GENERATIONS.......2000-05-03
I have been a Thompson fan since finding one of his Greatest Hits albums in a radio station where I was working in 1969. I know I played his stuff more than was justified by his popularity at the time, but The King of Western Swing made me a devotee of the music for life. Hearing this CD reaffirmed several feelings on Hank's music. It still sounds great,as does Hank; the modern musicians and recording techniques only serve to enhance a nearly pefect product, and whether the material is new or old,it just feels beter when Hank sings it. Frankly, I could have done just fine without the "Friends",but it was particularly pleasing to hear the likes of Vince Gill,David Ball,Tanya Tucker,Lyle Lovett, and other contemporary stars singing with one of the Masters, and sounding as though they loved every minute of it.
Brings back good ol' memories of Texas and Oklahoma!.......1999-08-13
As an old Okie who grew up in the '50s listening to the Texas/Oklahoma variety of western swing music, Hank Thompson always stood out as the best ever. His band was always top notch, tight and tasteful, with a sound that made people want to dance. Hank's singing, with that warm sincere voice, always pleased the ear. On this new CD he sounds exactly the same, if not better, and the band is great. His unique songs like "Green Light" and "I'll Still be Here Tomorrow" show his mix of humor and simple sincerity, with musical taste.
Modern versions of a venerable song writer's music........1999-08-07
For those of you who don't know who Hank Thompson is, this is a great chance to get to know this CMA Hall of Famer.
The album opens with a rendition of the classic Thompson song "Six Pack to Go." Thompson is accompanied on this number by Vince Gill, who lends a high and lonesome sound that adds dimension to this, one of my personal favorite songs by this Texas songwriter.
Hank is accompanied on this album by stars from a variety of backgrounds, such as Delaney and Bonnie who do a great rendention of "Dry Bread", as well as by their daughter Bekka Bramlett who lends her booming voice to fill out "I Picked a San Antonio Rose." "Hooked on Honky Tonk" features Brooks and Dunn lending that bar room feel to the song. And then there is the treat of listening to Hank's traditonal western voice weaving in and out with the velvet throated Lyle Lovett on the humorous number "Total Stranger," a treat that alone is worth buying this cd for.
The performers that Hank sounds most at home with are Junior Brown, who lends both voice and guit-steel to "Sell Them Chickens", and George Jones featured on the song Hank wrote especially for them, "Hey George, Hey Hank."
But the coup de grace on this album has to be Hank performing his classic "Wild Side of Life", only to be answered, as he was in real life, by Kitty Wells and Tanya Tucker doing the song that made Wells a household name, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels".
Buy this album! Listen to this album! Enjoy this album! Have your faith restored in the music biz!

The Best Of Hank Thompson: 1966-1979.......2006-03-22
Another rewarding collection from this Country Music Hall-of-Famer. This set features a couple of remakes from his legendary Capitol records tenure accompanied by the best of his recordings from his affiliation with Warner Bros. and ABC-Dot.Hank is in fine, clear voice as he has been from the beginning of his recording career in 1947 and is accompanied by the usual western swing sounds highlighted by twin fiddles and steel guitar. This collection features several selections not generally available on CD including such novelty sounds for which he has been associated with over the years such as "Where Is The Circus" and "I See Them Everywhere." Also included is another of Hank's long-standing associations with drinking songs as evidenced by "On Tap, In The Can, Or In The Bottle." Other highlights include the slower paced "The Mark Of A Heel" and "The Older The Violin, The Sweeter The Music" which is somewhat akin to Hank's performing and recording career exceeding seven decades, a feat accomplished by only one or two others. Another highlight is an updated version of the instrumental "Wildwood Flower" featuring the Brazos Valley Boys showcasing why they have in the past been named as the top country instrumental band for fourteen consecutive years. A worthwhile collection for the personable Hank Thompson!- Bob Bernd

Customer Reviews:
Still the finest Hank Thompson collection around.......2007-03-16
He was born Henry William Thompson on 9/3/25. It seems Hank Thompson was born to sing country music. As a teenager, Hank hosted his very own radio show on WACO in his hometown of Waco, Texas. After a stint in the U.S. Navy in the closing years of World War II Hank would form his own band which he dubbed the Brazos Valley Boys. The group quickly established itself and was extremely popular in Central Texas. In 1946, Hank Thompson inked his very first recording contract with Globe records and immediately had a double-sided hit record. "Whoa, Sailor" b/w "Swing Wide Your Gate Of Love" sold extremely well in the Southwest and attracted the attention of Capitol Records. In October of 1947, Hank would ink a long term deal with Capitol records. Over the next 18 years Hank Thompson would reward Capitol's faith in him by placing nearly 50 singles on Billboard's Top Country Singles chart. 30 of these tunes would hit the Top Ten! In 1989, Capitol records released the disc "Hank Thompson: Capitol Collectors Series" featuring 20 of Hank's biggest and best hits. In my view there has never been a finer compilation of Hank's work.
Hank's first big hit on Capitol was "Humpty Dumpty Heart". Released in early 1948, "Humpty Dumpty Heart' would climb all the way to #2 and remain on the country charts for an incredible 38 weeks. Yes, America was quickly becoming enamored with the sound of western swing and artists like Hank Thompson and of course the legendary Bob Wills were making one great record after another. Enjoy again some of Hank Thompson's most popular recordings like "Rub-A-Dub-Dub", "Squaws Across The Yukon" and his only #1 record "The Wild Side of Life" from the spring of 1952. I might also recommend to you a pair of terrific ballads, namely "Yesterday's Girl" and "Don't Take It Out On Me". You are also sure to enjoy Hank's hilarious 1953 hit "Wake Up, Irene" which was billed as the answer to the Weavers enormously popular single "Goodnight Irene". Perhaps my very favorite song on this disc is Hank's rendition of Woody Guthrie's "Oklahoma Hills" which climbed all the way to #7 back in 1961. All in all, I think most would agree with me that there is not a bad track among the 20 songs included in this collection.
"Hank Thompson: Capitol Collectors Series" comes with an exceptionally well done 16 page booklet featuring biographical information on the artist as well as chart data on each of these tunes. I particularly enjoyed the two-page photo in the center of the booklet that features many of Hank's album covers and 45's. Unfortunately, as I write this review "Hank Thompson: Capitol Collectors Series" is out of print. Hopefully, the folks at Capitol will eventually decide to restore this one to their catalogue. This is a five star disc that I can highly recommend! But if you are unable to locate a copy of this one may I suggest that the 2004 release entitled "A Proper Introduction to Hank Thompson" might well be the best available alternative.
Great C & W Swing and Germinal Rockabilly.......2006-09-20
Hank's style, and that Golden Age of C&W that he occupied, are what I like best about Country (I stopped listening to "country" music after 70's Waylon Jennings). Upbeat, honky tonk, swingin' blues and the roots of Rockabilly (Thompson was the first to bring a drum set into the C&W recording studio) are all here on this excellent collection.
I like the stereo recordings best, but they're all classic! Hank's trademark meandering voice, smack-dab country picking, lush lilting steel guitar, sweeping fiddle and playfully jumping honky tonk piano: a great round of solos all within a two-minute musical interval! (You just can't get enough of Six Pack to Go!)
A MUST for "true" C&W fans.
Please note: there are twenty (20) songs on this collection, not 19 as listed in the Amazon ad. Breakin' the Rules actually resides between Wake Up Irene and Honky Tonk Girl.
The definitive Hank Thompson hits collection.......2004-10-17
Although long out of print, this remains the strongest compilation of Hank's music. It contains twenty of his hits from 1947 to 1961, all of which peaked at fourteen or higher on the country charts. Hank's western swing style followed in the tradition of Bob Wills.
As with most singers, there is one song that Hank is remembered for above all others. In his case, that song is Wild side of life. The tune had already been used for to songs in the thirties (Great speckled bird, I'm thinking tonight of my blue eyes) but the lyrics were new. The song depicted women in a poor light and one of their number, Kitty Wells, recorded an answer song (It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels) as a rebuff. It also used the same tune as Great speckled bird, so we ended up with four songs sharing one tune. All four have become country standards and it can get confusing if you think you've hears one of them before but it was actually one of the others that you'd heard.
Hank had many other great hits including Humpty Dumpty heart, Whoa sailor, Yesterday's girl, Don't take it out on me, Blackboard of my heart and Squaws along the Yukon, all among the major country hits to be found here.
If you can find it, this is the Hank Thompson collection to choose.

Customer Reviews:
Gold at the Golden Nugget.......2004-12-31
I bought this album to get a song called "She's Just A Whole Lot Like You" but found several other songs that I liked even better.
I am not a big Hank Thompson fan but this is a great collection of songs and it is has an excellent feel to it since it was recorded live.
Merle Travis is there playing guitar with Hank and the steel guitar work of Bobby Garrett is fantastic as usual.
If you are ever going to purchase a Hank Thompson album this is the one to buy.
Hank does some classic songs such as "John Henry" and "Orange Blossom Special" but my favorite here is a song written by Hank called " One Step Away."
Of course, if you are not a fan of Country and not a fan of Western Swing then this album is not for you.
However, this is Hank Thompson at his best!!!
