The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18
Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description
Elvis' home away from home was the Las Vegas Hilton and fans from around the world would gather to see the King do what he did best. The Follow That Dream label captures Elvis' 1972 winter performances in this great live Vegas concert CD. Many of the songs were only performed live once by Elvis and until now have never been available. Splendid performances by the King at his best taken from a handful of dates from January and February of '72. 2007.
Album Details
2007 Digitally Remastered 5" Digipack Release Covers Elvis' Engagement at the Las Vegas Hilton in January-february, 1972. RCA Did Not Record Entire Shows and Several of the New Songs Elvis Had Added to his Shows were Only Recorded Once. The Consequence is that the Main Body of the CD - the RCA Recordings - Feature Several Previously Released Versions. Soundboard (Informal) Recordings of Other Song Performances During the Engagement were Added to the End of the Disc in Order to Make this as Representative as Possible of Elvis' Repertoire at that Time.
Customer Reviews:
Great live Elvis, but let down by sound quality.......2007-06-15
Follow That Dream compiled a show from Elvis Presley's Jan/Feb 1972 Las Vegas season. The bulk of the CD (tracks 1-17) consists of multi-track recordings, the remainder is taken from soundboard. Perversely, while the sound quality of the soundboard tracks is totally acceptable, the multi-track recordings (mastered by Lene Reidel) are a disappointment, lacking in punch and clarity, and suffering from a poor mix, especially when compared to earlier releases (e.g. "Burning Love" or the "Walk A Mile in My Shoes" box, or also the recent compilations which boast DSD audio).
Only part of the material here is unreleased, but the overall quality of Elvis' shows in this season is indisputable. 1972 was the year of the fabulous March sessions which gave us gems like "Burning Love" and "Always On My Mind", the rockumentary Elvis On Tour, and Elvis' appearances at Madison Square Garden. Here, at the beginning of the year, we get truly inspired versions of "You Gave Me A Mountain", "It's Impossible" (in an outstanding arrangement and beautifully sung - previously released, but now complete with a false start), "It's Over" (again, what a magnificent performance), "The Impossible Dream", "An American Trilogy", and "Until It's Time For You To Go". Live, Elvis would hardly ever sound as good again as he did here.
Content-wise "An American Trilogy" is a superb CD and it would have been a sure five-star release if it wasn't let down by the sound quality.

Not a bad collection.......2007-06-24
This is CD includes songs from three of Elvis' early 1960's movies: Flaming Star, Wild in the Country, and Follow That Dream. No soundtrack album was released for any of the movies, however EPs were released for Flaming Star and Follow That Dream and the song Wild In the Country and Lonely Man were released on singles. Flaming Star and Follow That Dream were top 20 hits in the US, reaching 14 and 15 on the Billboard singles chart, while Wild In The Country peaked at 26 and Lonely Man at 32. This is a pretty good collection and a good example of early 60's pop-rock. Not Elvis' best work from the period, but it is not bad.

Not much of a Disney Princess CD!.......2006-05-04
Well, Disney has done this again... How can this thing earn money?
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!
The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31
I'm going to say it right now --- this CD is good. It's very good. If you're looking for true "Disney princess" tracks and you don't consider Cinderella II, Aladdin and the King of Thieves or Mulan/Lion King to count, then stop now. But it seems like most people are basing their opinions on the sorts of songs they expected from the CD, rather than what's actually on it.
The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.
Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.
Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.
"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.
"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.
"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.
"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.
"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.
Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"
"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.
"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.
"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.
Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.
So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.
Another Repackaging Of Princess Favorites.......2004-04-21
When is Disney ever going to realize that recycling Disney Princess songs aren't such a good idea? As a Disney Princess fan since I was really little I have always enjoyed Disney princess songs. But i am so so so so sick and tired about on just about every Disney album dedicated solely to the Disney Princesses Disney always always ALWAYS has a habit of recycling old princess songs instead of adding new princess songs. I mean people already own half the songs on Princess Favorites and can buy them on the film soundtracks or the Disney princess collection cd. Why I think this cd was released is that Disney was trying to promote the movie Cinderella II Dreams Come True as the songs from that movie are on this cd. But heck one of the songs Put it Together is also on the SUPERSTAR HITS cd. So while this cd may be a redone version of Princess Collection Volume #2 please Please Please PLEASE do not buy,
Thank you very much for your time
Whose Princess Favorites???.......2003-10-15
I would classify only 3 of the songs on this CD as Princess Favorites - Belle, Kiss The Girl and Once Upon A Dream. The rest are either not Princess songs or not favorites.
My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.
We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?
I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!
Save your money!.......2002-04-30
A friend gave this CD to my little girl for her 5th birthday...she was thrilled to get it. The thrill ended as soon as it was played. She wanted to know where the Princesses were.
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!

Outstanding. The King at his very best........2007-03-09
As previously mentioned by another reviewer, I agree that this is better far and beyond the original releases. Never before has the term 'Less Is More' meant so much (in music terms anyway)than it does on this fine release. You will never want to hear the original release versions of most tracks on here again once you get your chops around this album.Or at least you'll cringe on hearing the originals after this gem. Fantastic sound quality also.
Long Live The KING!
ELVIS AT HIS BEST!!.......2005-11-19
This has to be the best cd I own. It is ALL ELVIS without backup singers. The sound is wonderful and so is Elvis. His magnificent voice is clear and soulful. It also has a lot of Elvis's wacky antics. He is having so much fun with his band. Elvis had such a hearty laugh that you can't help laughing with him. You would have loved to be there with all these crazy guys. There should be more like this. It is Elvis at his best. There will NEVER be another Elvis!!! ELVIS ROCKS!!!
Buy it!.......2005-07-22
This is a companion CD of unreleased takes to "Elvis In Memphis", "Back In Memphis", "The Memphis Record", and "Suspicious Minds" (2CD).
In addition, get "American Crown Jewels" (alternates), "Finding The Way Home" (2CD - more alternates)and "American Rejects" (again alternates). Essential.
Simply superb!.......2004-03-23
The audio quality is superb. I consider the 1969 American Sound Sessions to be among his finest studio work. IMO, it was the last great session he ever did.I only wish he had stuck with Chips Moman at American instead of returning to Nashville. I can recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys the American recordings. Although the songs are first-rate, I don't enjoy the false starts, dialogue and profanity. But other than that, it's a perfect set and I will listen to it many times.
A Must Have !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-26
This is without a doubt the real and true Elvis at his best...Get this CD and enjoy.!!

Run, Don't Walk, To Your Keyboard and Order This CD!.......2007-06-20
Having just paid almost $50 for an FTD (Follow That Dream) label 2-CD set of "Elvis Is Back", you can imagine that I was expecting some excellent entertainment value. FTD has delivered again! This INCREDIBLY fine sounding re-master of the 1960 Elvis Is Back LP---plus singles and outtakes from its associated March and April 1960 RCA Nashville sessions---is worth every nickel.
It is fun to hear the excitement build as Elvis and the band work through early versions of classic tracks like "Such A Night", "A Mess Of Blues", "Soldier Boy", "The Girl Of My Best Friend", "Fame And Fortune", "Fever", "Dirty, Dirty Feeling", "It's Now Or Never" and MORE. Elvis experiments with an assortment of interesting vocal phrasings, and the guys fool around with tempo and instrumentation as the session progresses. His operatic range on "It's Now Or Never" is legendary, and the emotion Elvis puts into "Soldier Boy" is stunning-- it is powerfully elegant...especially so on takes 1, 2 and 3. Eventually, take 15 of "Soldier Boy" (with a smoother vocal and what seems like a slightly faster tempo) became the "master"--the track chosen for the album.
Listening to this beautifully re-mastered CD, one feels as if they are there in real-time; not "were there", but ARE THERE-- in the control booth-- as the sessions come to life; the mix, and the instruments, particularly the bass guitar, have never sounded this good on a consumer release. FTD has done a terrific job; this true stereo mix has been opened up spatially (but not overdone), and the light touch of EQ, reverb and general lack of compression (revealing greater dynamic range) are much appreciated.
These were Elvis' first post-army studio sessions. He was in fine voice-- and you can HEAR the maturing of his vocal talent (range, interpretation and emotive achievement) revealing a refined, yet fresh new style. The choice of material also speaks volumes...country, blues, gospel, doo-wop, rock and wonderfully navigated pop. If you've ever wondered what Elvis is all about...this is a good place to learn. I can't imagine any singer alive today who could even come close to the capabilities of this guy.
This also represents (I believe) the first Elvis 3-track recordings...which means that the (then) new technology has joyously preserved what is truly an amazing collection of music production. Remember, Elvis recorded 'live to tape' with the band backing him in real-time as he made these hits...no going back later (like producers today can do with 8, 16, 24, 48 and 64-track machines). In this environment, Elvis feeds off the band, and the band feeds off Elvis' performances. To use the 's' word (synergy) here is appropriate---and not a surrender to the lure of the cliché.
This is a most compelling package of Elvis' early 60s pop, rock and blues tracks. When you hear the original album and single hit MASTERS-- alongside the outtakes and alternate versions-- you gain a great appreciation for the recoding process and the undeniable talent of Presley, his musicians and the Jordanaires (his long-time background singers).
With 53 tracks-- this trip back in time lasts about 2 hours. You will want to listen to this on a quality stereo system...not mini-headphones. (Don't wait too long. FTD only presses a limited number of discs. They may not re-issue because of the high production costs for what could be a potentially small market of second run sales.)
At first, the $50 price tag may seem too high, unless you consider this more of a time trip; in that light, $50 for the price of a ticket to take you back to two special nights, March 20, 1960 and April 3, 1960...and put you on a front-row chair INSIDE RCA's Nashville studios as you listen to Elvis work out on the other side of the glass...well, $50 seems like the deal of a lifetime.
Can you imagine how Elvis fans would feel TODAY--if someone had made arrangements back THEN--to film all, or even part, of his return to music making? In the absence of such a visual recording, close your eyes and open your other senses as you experience what all of America learned in the spring of 1960: "Elvis Is Back".
Elvis was trully BACK!.......2007-03-09
After two years of absence Elvis was back at the recording studio to turn a new leaf and provide new and exciting sounds
This is an album that is filled with Elvis vocal mannerisms that no one can master just as well. Throughout the various rock tunes, he provides again an example of a high pitched voice that can be next to a low baritone note. Do notice how he still passes his trademark of muffling or accentuating verses in order to escape from the constraints of a solid rocker. Inescapably, Elvis manages to jazz up the rock tunes based on his vocal acrobatics.
As far as the ballads go, Elvis is at the top of his form and never fails to provide full sound and distinct them all apart from each other. For example, Soldier Boy is a doo-up ballad that up to that point only major black vocalists could validate through their performances. Elvis is giving a new approach to this style. On the other hand, the ballad Fame and Fortune is a distant cry from doo-up melodies. Still Elvis manages to blend an operatic feeling with a doo-up following to it.
Overall, the album is a must for collectors.
The package presentation once again is superb and the outtakes are gold.
Do notice the one-two-three-four whisper preceding the epitome of Elvis Blues sound: Reconsider Baby
Enjoy!!!
Essential Elvis .......2005-04-23
In the last few years there have been loads of Elvis Presley releases. Very few prove as exciting and essential as this double CD-set covering Elvis' first two post-army studio sessions in March and April 1960. These sessions not only produced a series of sterling cuts which made the original exemplary "Elvis Is Back" album, they also gave us true classics like "It's Now Or Never", "Are You Lonesome Tonight" and "Stuck On You".
This new "Elvis Is Back" set masterminded by the Follow That Dream team gives us the original album, the singles and all the substantial outtakes. Several of these outtakes have been released earlier (7 are released here for the first time, just as 19 false starts and workparts), but to have them all assembled often in augmented sound quality, makes the investment really worthwile.
This set, presented in the now characteristic tri-fold digipack the size of a 45rpm, has no less than 53 tracks, with both discs running well over 78 minutes each. Digitally transferred and mixed at the Sony Studios in New York, the sound quality is outstanding.
