Good Classic Country.......2007-04-20
Wonderful CD. Faron Young just the way I like him. Every song was as honky tonk as I hoped or as we always say,"Good Beer Drinkin Music."

The Sheriff still sings!.......2007-01-20
You won't hear anybody like Faron on the radio today...He was, and is, a true original...his wink and smile even on a sad song tells you "it ain't so bad"...unfortunately, his life was not as happy as his sound and grinning face when he did what he truly loved...entertaining. It is sure good to know his music is still able to be found. This CD is a great start to get to know a true entertainer...who never sang a song he didn't make his own.
Good choice for an intro to Faron Young.......2005-10-10
This CD showcases some of Faron's best known Capitol recordings, including his four number ones. I walked into a meeting one day and heard Faron singing. One of my employees had bought this CD and played it as a tribute to me. Was I thrilled! For anyone who enjoys classic country and wants a taste of Faron Young, this is the CD to buy.
"Your Old Used To Be" is the only one of Faron's songs his wife--Hilda--helped him write. Johnny Paycheck (Faron's frontman, then known as Donny Young) sings harmony on this recording.
timeless.......1999-12-22
faron young is one of the all time greats in country music & this album proves it as does all the others.anyone who is a true country music lover should have this album.

Customer Reviews:
An EXCELLENT collection.......2007-06-11
Until I heard this album (CD), I had forgotten how many great songs Faron Young had recorded! This compilation includes some real treasures, and the recording quality is excellent, too. If you ever liked anything by Faron Young, you will love this album!
Absolutely the best.......2006-04-30
Faron Young may have had the best voice ever in country music. The earliest recordings on this album are pure country, the quality is superb, and the range of his voice is stunning. A number of the later recordings, made at the beginning of the rock-and-roll era are not true country, but, once again, the quality of his voice is something to appreciate. Fantastic!!
This may be the best country music I've ever heard.
An underrated artist and a great collection!.......2003-11-16
When looking back at the history of county music, many people somehow ignore the importance of Faron Young's career. And for many years, Faron's catalog was subjected to incomplete "best ofs" and "greatest hits" discs that either were way too short or focused on his later, lesser years at Mercury Records (which, admittedly, produced some great songs too).
Even though the Bear Family box set is the complete collection of all of Faron's Capitol recordings, it's $90 (or more) price tag can scare away the more casual fan. This 2-CD set is the perfect compromise for those on a budget, since it collects all of the hit singles from that crucial ten year period but is comprehensive enough to satisfy most appetites. For those with even tighter budgets, the Country Music Foundation has a nice 1-CD set of Faron's Capitol years called "Live Fast, Love Hard: Original Capitol Recordings" that covers most of the essentials, but lacks the depth of this set.
And while this 2-CD set eventually convinced me that I needed Bear Family's 5 disc set, I still retained this collection for it's portability.
Whether you're looking for the perfect starter to your Faron Young collection, or looking to upgrade from a single disc set, look no further than this 2-disc set. You won't be disappointed.
A voice better than I remembered.......2003-01-01
I had forgotten how pure was Faron Young's voice. I play this two cd set as much, if not more, than any other in my large collection. It is a soft and pleasant trip down memory lane of the 1950's and 1960's, and well worth the price.

Faron Young's musical legacy may not speak as loudly as Hank Williams's or George Jones's, but this 12-song retrospective of Young's charting A-sides from his Mercury tenure illustrates a confident and experienced singer capable of wide emotional and stylistic ranges. Young nods to the Bakersfield Sound with the classic "Wine Me Up" and sends heartfelt whispers to the ladies on "This Little Girl Of Mine." "Keeping Up with the Joneses," a heartache-laced 1964 duet with Margie Singleton, may not stand up today quite as well as do the more aggressive anthems, like "Unmitigated Gall," and the breakneck re-recording of his first hit single "Goin' Steady." Still, this collection properly illustrates Young's grasp of a variety of moods and material, as well as his direct, honest delivery. --Kelly Minnis
Customer Reviews:
Great music by a great singer.......2005-10-10
I never get tired of listening to Faron Young. He had many, many excellent (and under-appreciated) recordings on Mercury. This sample of his better-known songs only touches the surface of the music in his 26 Mercury albums. Perhaps there will be a Mercury box set some day to complement his Capitol box set.
Outstanding piece.......2005-08-27
Yeah, most folks think of the earlier Faron Young, but this selection is outstanding. Faron has few peers, and even fewer imitators; he was that good. His early stuff (and I recommend the 5 cd box set very highly) is what comes to our minds (ie, Hello Walls, Goin' Steady, and Live Fast) when we think of Faron Young; but he was constantly evolving. And this selection covers Faron's move to cover the dying "Bakersfield Sound" being vacated by Buck Owens (after the untimely death of Don Rich). Of course, the smooth and refined voice remains, but the beer-joint sound and those amazing fiddles make this a "must-have" album. Enjoy
Excellent overview of his Mercury years.......2005-04-11
This is a very good selection of honkytonker Faron Young's work on the Mercury label, gathering hits from 1964-71. This isn't a period most hard country fans think highly of, but there were still some real gems that came out, and the record's producers cherry-picked the best of them. Definitely worth checking out.

Poor quality recording........2001-07-20
The material is good but the execution leaves much to be desired. Volume varies significantly between tracks. This CD sounds like a tape recorded off the radio.

Faron Young had a huge number of hit songs and stayed on the charts forever.. yet his name is not in alphabetical listings..I found him because I knew who he was..his records will still sell very well if he is listed.. things like Wine me up"'hello walls' etc.. belong to no certain time ,, they are classics.

Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2005-01-04
When I first received this CD in the mail, I had very high hopes. I had the stereo Mercury LPs which these titles first appeared on. However, over the years they wore out and I was looking to replace some of the songs with digital copies. When I finally put this CD in my player, to say I was extremely disappointed would be an understatement. This has got to be, without a doubt, the most horrendous attempt at mastering for CD release I have EVER encountered. The folks who put this out should be ashamed of themselves!! What a way to treat one of the truly great stylists in the history of country music!! A real shame- -and a sham!!
Some quality country music; bad presentation.......2004-09-30
It was some time ago now, but as I am a Faron Young fan, I took well-preserved vinyls of my favorites which turned up on this product later, along with some of Faron's earlier works, and recorded them onto a cassette (my own version of his greatest hits). Having no sophisticated recording equipment at the time, I recorded them with an open microphone. Today, they still sound better on my tape player than they do on the compilation here (I never burned a CD). Even so, I question the quality of Mercury's original recordings. "Yellow Bandana", "She Went a Little Bit Farther" and "It's Four in the Morning" evoke special memories for me. They deserve a better presentation, a "do over" maybe.
Some Good and Some Bad.......2003-10-10
This package includes all of Faron Young's Top 10 Mercury Hits and most of his bigger hits for the label.
Now some bad news up front. Like the previous reviewer, I must complain about the sound. It does sound like some of these cuts were taken off 3rd and 4th generation masters. For such an important compiliation, that is unexusable. More bad news, no recording data. At least a listing of the dates by the songs would have been appreciated.
But on the other hand, I guess this is better than nothing!!! The songs are all original recordings. The booklet is very imformative, and like I said, the only thing missing is the recording data.
24 Original Mercury Hits.......2003-09-03
This import features most of the biggest hits of Farons Mercury years. The original recordings are here but the sound quality could be better as they sound like they may have come off from 2nd or 3rd generation tapes which gives some the songs a slight muddy sound. Most of these songs are hard to find on CD so buy it until something better comes along. Faron Young was one of true Country Giants of his time.

Dean Martin style.......2005-10-10
This CD will appeal to people who like Ray Price's second career, that with pop instrumentation. Although the music here sounds good, I prefer his honky tonk style. Faron enjoyed singing like Dean Martin, but he didn't usually record in that style. This CD gave him an opportunity to do so.
Take a Chance on Me.......2000-03-23
This is a wonderful album..Ray and Faron Young are good together.."The memories that last"..'Funny how time slips away".. "Too Big to Fight"... and a couple of 50's pop tunes.. "Walking my Baby Back Home" and "Side by Side".. make for some good listening..there will never be another album by these two together..and that is sad,, it is a great one to own.
TEN STARS!.......2000-03-19
One of the very best ever! I couldn't believe I'd found a CD with both Faron Young and Ray Price together. Two of my all time favorites. I miss Faron so, and I'm thankful Ray Price is still putting out some of the best music we'll ever hear. Truly a treasure!

Customer Reviews:
Faron Young as he sounded in his concerts.......2005-10-14
This is the only live album Faron Young recorded, as well as being his last album. It contains the style of singing he used in his shows, frequently a more relaxed and Dean Martin-ish performance than on his records. It also includes his off-the-cuff patter and politically incorrect jokes. This is Faron as his audiences saw him, without being filtered through media restrictions. The musicians were the final group of Country Deputies, and they sounded wonderful--especially Ernie Reed on fiddle.
I've listened to numerous Faron Young recordings while researching his life to write his biography. Nothing comes close to matching his live performance except this CD.
Last recordings of a country legend.......2005-04-11
This was the last album released by one of country's greatest honkytonk singers. It came out a couple of years before his untimely death in 1996; at the time Young was grappling with the onset of emphysema...

Customer Reviews:
Great Classic Country.......2005-09-13
This is a great single-disc compilation of classic honky-tonk. I lopped the first and last tracks off, and the abbreviation makes for a perfect sampler of music perfectly suited for driving down the back roads out west with one hand on the steering wheel and a cold bottle of beer in the other.
Original versions of Faron Young on Mercury!.......2000-07-20
This release from Mercury's short-lived "American Essentials" series fills a void in the reissuing of Young's work on the label. All thirteen songs are original versions of Top 10 hits (he had 17 for the label between 1963-1974) and there are no remakes of his vintage Capitol material from 1952-1962 (which can be found on the 24-cut Country Music Foundation's Faron Young CD, "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young", which is only available now at the Country Music Hall Of Fame, I believe). These two CD's together give a solid, comprehensive view of one of the best honky-tonk singers (and entrepreneurs) that Nashville has known. Personal highlights on tht "Golden Hits" disc include Faron's sorrowing renedition of "This Little Girl Of Mine", a great duet with Margie Singleton (Keeping Up With The Joneses), and his 1966 toe-tapper "Unmitigated Gall". Stay away from the Step One CD's unless you like 1980's remakes of his material. Also recommended over "The Hits" because of a better selection of Mercury material at the same price (and 2 more songs).
