Product Description
If you were to paint a picture of consistency and class in the Edmonton music scene Stewart MacDougall's mug would fit the bill perfectly. This singer-songwriter, who came to our city from his native New Brunswick, has time and time again delivered music of a very high standard in a variety of settings. A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Stewart MacDougall has called Edmonton home for 17 years. He's worked as a songwriter, keyboardist and vocalist with many well-known artists, such as k.d. lang and the reclines, Ian Tyson and the Chinook Arch Riders, and Laura Vinson's Red Wyng. Most recently, MacDougall has been one half of the duo Great Western Orchestra. Along with David Wilkie, they've composed, arranged, performed and produced two CDs: Wind in the Wire and Buffalo Ground. Through his alliances with many groups, MacDougall has made television appearances on Rita and Friends, Country Beat, Pure Gold, Sun Country and the Don Harron Show. Through the Great Western Orchestra, he has toured Canada, the U.S., Hong Kong, China and Indonesia, and he's had the opportunity to perform with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony.
It's been a while coming but MacDougall has finally added his first solo album to that impressive resume and it's a fine collection of material that rests under the title Gathering Time. Recorded in a couple of local studios, the disc casts a bright light on both the man's top-notch songwriting abilities and his distinctive and strong voice. Minimal production is also a key ingredient as the use of his various keyboards, from digital piano to organ and his vocals are once in a while embellished by restrained pedal steel guitar lines and additional vocals. He's pleased with the disc and should be, as it avoids, in his words, "being genre specific."
He sings like he's lived and is reliving every lyric and delivers as strong sense of what makes him tick on numbers like Lie For You, Face In The ;Mirror and Wrong Side of the Hill.

Customer Reviews:
Not My Style.......2007-05-11
This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!
Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28
For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.
Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16
This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.
Western Music.......2005-07-29
I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."
A great follow-up.......2003-08-29
This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!
Total Time: Disc One 71:20 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 71:24 on 17 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 302 066 225 2...(2001)

Product Description
This is a collection of 50 unaccompanied old time banjo tunes recorded by 23 of the best old time players on the scene. A very rare source of music for all who are interested in old time music and particularly in old time banjo styles. 100% pure old time.
DOUBLE CD WITH 50 OLD TIME BANJO TUNES AND EXTENSIVE LINER NOTES (20 PAGE BOOKLET). In the Fall of 2006, 23 of the best old time banjo players in the country each recorded 2 to 3 old time banjo solos and contributed them to this project, which seeks to document the state of old time banjo music at the beginning of the 21st century. This is a very unique double CD set that contains 50 tunes, some well-known and some very obscure. Eleven of the tracks contain singing by the banjo player, but there is no accompaniment whatsoever, just banjo.
The old time banjo, "the heartbeat of the band," tends to get lost in jams and it is rarely featured as a solo instrument. So we peeled away all the guitars, fiddles, basses and washboards to let you hear what 23 players do with their banjos when nobody else is around. Nothing like this has been done since County Records released their Clawhammer Banjo series decades ago. This is a similar project, but with contemporary players, all of whom are still alive and kicking.
The project contains a wide variety of banjos, fretted, fretless, gourd, 13" large-pot Spratt, nylon string, gut strings, some slick and some funky, and several banjos made by the players themselves. And although most of the tunes are played clawhammer style, there is a wide variety of styles employed. (Mike Seeger actually goes back and forth between picking, strumming and clawhammer on his two tunes.)

Old Time Gathering: A charming CD you will always cherish.......2003-06-04
Want something really refreshing? If you like stringed instruments, you will get great pleasure from the unusual variety of sounds here, including hammered dulcimer, autoharp, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and banjo.
I don't usually get so excited about a purchase, but here's a real treat well-deserving of mention.
I originally bought this CD for my wife because it contains "Shenandoah," one of her favorite songs, but we immediately fell in love with the charming, nostalgic, down-home sound of nearly every one of the 24 tracks on this Cumberland release, most recently marketed in the CD displays at Cracker Barrel Restaurants.
I took it to my dentist's office, where they played it over the office system while attending to a root canal. It made the time pass quickly and incited plenty of foot-tapping and revelry. When they were done with me, the dentist and his staff wanted to know where they could get a copy. They gave me the money to pick one up for them on my next trip! After the dentist retired, his staff lamented that he took it with him, and now they want another one.
The sound recording itself is crisp, clean, well-balanced and well-mastered. It's a first-rate production job that would satisfy the fussiest audiophile in hi-fi earphones.
The playing is expert, the beat is rock steady and some of the mellifluous passages are amazingly complex and fast, not to mention extremely catchy. The instruments are supple and in excellent tune. The arrangement of songs gives the CD an excellent flow with a good mix of fast and slow pieces, with appeal to a broad audience.
My wife and I especially enjoy this CD in the car while traveling. It has plenty of familiar tunes that you will be humming to yourself all night and next day. If you shut off the car in the middle of a tune, you will still be humming it when you get back in and turn the key again!
I'm back on the internet right now to buy more for gifts, and not observing any used ones - a further testimonial to the staying power of this great CD. You will definitely be charmed, your long trips will pass quickly, and your office day will be more productive and a lot less dreary with this music playing in the background. ENJOY!
