4 out of 5 stars Music we all need to hear once in a while........2007-01-04

This album is well put together and I enjoy the old standards. Music is an integral part of our heritage. Often when I listen to this album, I think about what our country has been through and how very, very important it is to appreciate what we have. I spent 3 years living in France in the 60's and I cannot tell you how much all Americans looked forward to going "Home!"

Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars A very good CD.......2005-06-16

If you like a mix of songs and marches very well played, this CD is for you. The voices of the singers are good, the music support the lyrics and it is easy to listen or to sing along. Also, nearby half of the tunes are played by the Band of the Grenadier Guards and for me, this Band is the best band to play Sousa marches and military marches. The precision of the execution is perfect, the sound is lovely and the technical quality of the recording is perfect. When I listen Anchors Aweigh, I always hear the sound of the waves and it is one of the only bands that gives me this feeling. If you have just one CD of military music to buy, you may buy this one; it is a best buy.

3 out of 5 stars Revision of history.......2005-03-27

As usual, "Dixie," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," and other songs of a Southern genre are conspicuously absent. Why not throw in a couple of rap tunes to make this album truly "American?"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely CD--shameful misspelling on the song titles.......2002-11-22

I do not own this CD--though it appears it would be a wonderful album to listen to. I was compelled to write my review because of the misspelling of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner (as opposed to "The Star Bangled Banner" as it appears not once but twice on the song list). I do hope this error is corrected.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Patriotic Album.......2002-07-20

For all those patriots out there who want to listen to classical patriotic music, then get this album. This has a lot of tracks from yankee doodle march to the Washington post march. Even Amazing grace is here. The orchestras and the chorus here, gave there best performance ever.

Enjoy

1 out of 5 stars Eeww!.......2006-06-19

This is like the music to one of those theme park Celebrate America type shows. The musical arrangements have that hokey, somewhat dated, overly sweet and enthusiatic feel I hate. I thought I was getting the standard versions of these songs but what I got was the cruise ship extravaganza, yuck!

1 out of 5 stars this land is your land.......2006-04-17

to think that "this land is your land" is a patriotic song is laughable at best, however is a common misconception of the song. you'd think that the creators of this cd would research the songs they put on the cd a little more, and find that "this land is your land" is actually a protest song (original lyrics contained lyrics such as "on that sign there it said private property/but on the other side it didn't say nothing/that side was made for you and me", an obvious attack on capitalism".

4 out of 5 stars America's Favorite Patriotic Songs.......2005-09-30

The title says it all.
Good old fashioned "goose bump" music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Place to Start a Patriotic Music Collection.......2002-09-12

This choral collection features a majority of the best known and loved patriotic songs from our country's history. I'll admit I was a little leery of the choral part when I first picked it up, but I've found that, for the most part, it works really well.

It especially stands out on the acappella version of "My Country 'Tis of Thee." It's absolutely stunning. Other fun songs are "This Land is Your Land," which I really wasn't familiar with before I bought this, and a personal recent favorite song "God Bless the USA." I love having the "Armed Forces Medley" on here so I can learn these songs. And the instrumental arrangement on "Stars and Stripes Forever Medley" at the end has me taping my toes every time I hear it.

There are a couple missteps, however. I've heard better versions of "The Star Spangled Banner." I think one reason I'm disappointed with it is that they only include one verse. I love the other verses of our national anthem, and wished they'd included at least one more since they included multiple verses of all the other songs. Also, "If My People" and "God Save America," while find songs, just don't seem to fit here.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this collection. I'm just starting to look for patriotic music, and this has been a wonderful first CD.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance and Collection of Songs.......2006-03-29

I am impressed with the quality of the Gramercy Brass Ensemble's performance of these traditional American Patriot pieces.

Beautiful sound, outstanding musicianship, classic yet spirited arrangements, and wide variety from national anthems to branch-specific armed forces hymns.

I would recommend this recording to anyone looking to hear American Patriotic music at its best. A very nice CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Patriotic CD.......2004-02-21

This is a great CD if you ever need or want to have patriotic music. American music played by an American brass band. This group sounds terrific. For those of you unfamiliar with brass band, it is comprised of 25 brass players and 2 or 3 percussionists. You get a rich, full sonority and these guys play GREAT! This CD is HIGHLY recommended to all bras players who want to hear tone quality, timbre, intonation, and more. Band directors would be wise to use this as a model for their students for everything from pitch to phrasing. Everybody else would be wise to pick it up if you like Americana. I know people who use this for their commute because it is upbeat and uplifting. Excellent CD!!!! You may also want to check out their second CD entitled "Christmas Time Is Here". Also highly recommended.

Album Description

"I recorded killers and stars, by myself in the dining room of the house where i was living, in early March, 2001. I had just gotten divorced, was fighting with the band (Drive-By Truckers) and a good number of my friends. I was feeling pretty freaked out and isolated and this album was my therapy. Most of the songs were new. I recorded the album in two consecutive nights, then ran down some rough mixes myself (with no outboard sweetening at all) about a week later. I hastily pressed up a few hundred copies, made a cover for them, and sold them at my solo shows as a '1st draft/work in progress.'

Then the band hit the road and spent the next 14 months touring. killers and stars sort of got left behind. I really all but forgot about it. We were all busy writing and recording for our next album, touring, and just day-to-day living.

A couple of years went by and copies of the album kept getting passed around. Occasionally i would press up a few for some solo shows here or there and occasionally I would give some thought to actually finishing it. Recently I dug a copy out and gave it a serious listen. In some respects it was like listening to someone else. Most of the demons that inspired these songs have long since been laid to rest (or at least replaced by others), but the album kinda holds up for what it is."

5 out of 5 stars Raw.......2006-12-30

I am a huge fan of this album. It is very raw and a very honest feel to it. Both the music and lyrics are very engaging and grow on me with each listen.

4 out of 5 stars laid back.......2006-03-24

this is the first album that i bought by patterson hood. i am a very big fan of the acoustic guitar and this is a perfect example of how its supposed to be done. i also think that he has a great voice.

5 out of 5 stars I'm happy he released it.......2005-04-19

First of all, I admit that I don't own a single Drive By Truckers CD--something I plan on taking care of. I bought this CD on a whim after listening to clips of "Uncle Disney" and "Rising Son" and being very impressed. When I was able to listen to the complete CD, I immediatly fell in love.

This CD could have easily been cleaned up but, thankfully, it remains beautifully lo-fi and raw. From creaking chairs to string noise to the occasional off-key lyric, KILLERS AND STARS is a brutally honest recording even if you choose to ignore the intelligent songwriting. Hood's voice embodies each song like a backporch storyteller revealing more character with each note.

This is a real folk album done right. I wouldn't change a thing.

5 out of 5 stars A Low-Fi Masterpiece.......2005-04-12

Every once in awhile a singer or a band releases a diamond in the rough. That's the case with Patterson Hood's Killers & Stars. You might know Hood as the venerable leader of the very cool Drive By Truckers, one of the best bands out there today.

Hood recorded Killers in 2001 at his dining room table during a low point in his life personally and professionally. The band was in limbo and he was in the process of a divorce. The result is a CD that's low fi and dark, but brilliant nonetheless.

With the songs consisting just of Hood's voice and acoustic guitar, there's a certain rawness here. And that's a good thing, because Killer's songs are just that - raw. Hardship, uncertainty, frustration, melancholy and resignation are all in evidence.

The songs are all great, but I especially like Pay No Attention to Alice, a cover of a song written by country great Tom T. Hall about a friend of his whose wife was an alcoholic. And Frances Farmer is another great song. Farmer, of course, is the tragic actress that went off the deep end in the '40s. Back then they called it manic-depressive psychosis. Today the neat term for it is bipolar. Maybe Hood understood how Farmer must have felt when she was carted away to a nut house against her will and given shock treatment. Anyhow, that's a glammed up Farmer you see on the cover.

Enough about that. Buy this CD right now.

5 out of 5 stars Years in the making..........2005-03-12

It took Patterson years to finally record and release this album...and while most musicians would succumb to the urge to "over-polish" older material, Patterson did not. The songs are raw and masterfully played as if all of those memories were fresh in his mind. Patterson is truly one of the greats, not only of his genre, but in all music.

2 out of 5 stars Not a complete loss, but a loss just the same.......2007-02-22

A few interesting songs: Like a Hurricane blows everything else on this album off the map and is easily one of Neil's best guitar showpieces. Love that solo... Bite the Bullet and Homegrown are also good, I suppose. But you get the feeling Neil was on cruise control here. I guess he spent most of his artistic chips on the Ditch Trilogy (and After the Gold Rush, for that matter), and really wouldn't win them back until 1979's Rust Never Sleeps. He was in the midst of his country period here, and I'm no country fan, so perhaps that's why I can't get into the record's constant country gimmicks (pedal steel, fiddle, 2/4 bassline, etc.), and Neil had temporarily forgotten how to write a decent lyric (Hurricane excepted). The one big experiment(Will to Love) just so happens to be awful. The rest is insubstantial at best (Saddle up the Palomino; The Old Country Waltz; Star of Bethlehem) and borderline torturous at worst (Hey Babe; Hold Back the Tears). It's not as bad as Comes a Time or most of the '80's albums, but it's bad just the same.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Neil.......2007-01-23

Even better than I remembered it. If you're a Neil fan, this has to be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars I don't understand..........2006-10-05

I don't really know what the criticisms of American Stars n Bars were when it came out because I wasn't born. I have really only discovered early Neil Young in the last couple years. But I have no criticism on it. This album is no more a patchwork of styles than "Harvest," argued by some to be his greatest album. If you enjoy alt-country, rock, or serious singer-songwriter stuff you will appreciate this album.

4 out of 5 stars True fans won't be disappointed!.......2006-07-21

I found this album in the cut-out section of a record shop when I was like 20 years old. I never heard of it but it was Neil so I gave it a try. Don't be fooled by the price!!!! If you're a fan you'll listen to this often & it won't ever collect dust in your CD shelf!!!

4 out of 5 stars Worth it just for Like A Hurricane, but not that alone.......2006-06-07

Neil's 1977 album doesn't seem to get much praise. I'm here to tell you that is is far better then most are telling you.

Highlights:

Like A Hurricane (best guitar solo ever)
The Old Country Waltz (great lyrics, great song)

First off I'm a huge Neil Young fan, own 13 of his albums including Harvest (my favourite album of all time), After the Gold Rush, as well as harder albums like Tonights The Night and Ragged Glory. Where does American Stars 'N Bars fit in? Well, I'd put it ahead of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Yes thats right. And while I haven't listented to Tonights The Night much, I'm almost ready to put it ahead of that album as well.

So what does that mean to a prospective buyer? Get this album. Its worth it for Like A Hurricane alone, and if you've never heard this song (hard to believe), run out and buy this album. The guitar solo is so amazing. Definately Neil's best rock song, maybe even overall. No less impressive is The Old Country Waltz, the album opener. There is something about this song I really love. Next up are Saddle up the Palamino, Hey Babe and Hold Back The Tears. The latter two are quite good, with Saddle up the Palamino a little less impressive. Bite the Bullet is interesting, one of the albums rockers. Star of Bethelem is a great, slow song. Will to Love is extremely long for what it is, just Neil playing the same rhythm over and over again with quiet lyrics. I'll have to listen to this one some more to figure out what I really think, but initial impressions are good. Its definately unique. Like a Hurricane comes up next, no need to mention anything I haven't already said. Closing out the album is Homegrown. Honestly, who cares what follows Like A Hurricane, but this is the albums third rock song. As far as I can gather, its a song about growing your own pot. Yep, sounds like Neil.

So yes Like A Hurricane defines this album, and is responsible for alot of my enjoyment, but there are other songs, songs that you've never heard that make this album well worth the price.

Hope my little review makes at least one person buy this album that wasn't going to initially.

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World!

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars Pops Goes the 4th!.......2006-12-02

This is a great CD for any fan of the Boston Pops - especially those who have seen or been to their annual 4th of July performance - or for those who appreciate patriotic music. Many of the pieces they play at the Pops Goes the 4th concert are on the CD. My personal favorite is the 1812 Overture for its live cannons.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage NGDB.......2007-05-14

Great stuff if you're a big fan like me. Early '70s, interviews with band members, all live with some of the banter they're so good at.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...NGDB Emphasizes Their Country Roots.......2006-05-07

In 1970, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band released their breakout album UNCLE CHARLIE which contained the band's first Top 10 single "Mr. Bojangles." Two years later they released the critically acclaimed WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN. So it was only natural that there would be a great deal of excitement when STARS & STRIPES FOREVER was released in 1974.

At first glance, it's a curious album comprised of live cuts from a March 1972 concert and two June 1973 concerts, along with a couple of interviews and eight studio recordings (tracks 8-12, 18-19 and 23) from a single January 14, 1974 session in Nashville. Of the studio recordings, the only band-penned song is "Glocoat Blues," a blues spoof written by Jimmie Fadden.

What this album did was to help solidify the band's reputation as a legitimate country band. They perform two Hank Williams classics ("Jambalaya" and "Honky Tonkin'"), as well as Jimmie Driftwood's "Battle of New Orleans" and Doug Kershaw's hit "Diggy Liggy Lo." They also take on traditional bluegrass with "Teardrops in My Eyes" and "Cripple Creek." To add further credibility to their country credentials, fiddle virtuoso Vassar Clements performs on all of the studio recordings except "My True Story.

The live tracks include electrifying versions of NGDB classics like "Mr. Bojangles," "Cosmic Cowboy," "House at Pooh Corner," "Buy for Me the Rain," and one of my all-time favorites, "Fish Song." Not everything, however, fits neatly into the country genre. There's John McEuen's solo reading of Stephen Vincent Benet's poem "The Mountain Whippoorwill," accompanying himself on banjo. They also do a foot-stomping version of Buddy Holly's "Oh Boy." Then there's Jeff Hanna's nearly 7-minute monologue, "It Came from the 50's." Their cover of the Jive Five's "My True Story" marks the last studio recording featuring founding member Les Thompson. [Thompson also appears on the 1972 live tracks (1, 3, 5, 6, 14, 16, 21 and 24).]

I saw the NGDB while I was in college a year before this album was released, but they performed many of the songs here. Listening to this album again (now that I've replaced my LP version with CD) brings back the memories of that concert from more than 30 years ago. Taken all together, this is one of the NGDB's most enjoyable and satisfying albums of their 40-year career. [Running Time - 73:14] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars If you like NGDB you will LOVE this!.......2003-11-18

If you read the previous review you can see that Warrenville, Illinois must do a lot of inbreeding. This collection of songs is classic Dirt Band from the peak of their folk/country/rock period, and the dialogue between songs only enhance them. This is pure Americana at its best and you owe it to yourself to have this in your collection. It may not be a slick production but it certainly is quality musicianship and a damn good time as well.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your $$$!.......2003-08-02

There is "NO!"..."0!"...comparison to any other similarly titled album! These boys are rank amatures...and, they talk way too much! Save your mpney!

4 out of 5 stars A Documentary of The Dirt Band.......2002-03-17

This album should not be considered 'just a live album', it gives the listener an idea of what it's like for such musicians to get on stage, and rather than thinking of it as just another show, can have fun. All throughout the band enjoys themselves, the music is lively and it seems very unique. Not a lot of bands can do what the NGDB did. That was making great music and giving a good stage show, which, at that point the band had been doing 8 years at the time. Be sure to check out the "Alive" album as well, it's as good (and maybe even better) than this album. "Alive" was issued in 1968 and features the early incarnation of the NGDB.

5 out of 5 stars Always the Greatest!!.......2007-05-14

This is a Levon Helm entry that I missed somewhere along the way. Levon is, without a doubt, one of the great VOICES and DRUMMERS in the history of Rock 'n Roll. His style and presentation of almost thirty years ago is as good as ever and he has not lost his touch, even to this date!!
This CD is a bargain at twice the price! A MUST have for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Some Darn Good Music!.......2007-05-12

Let's face it, bands don't make music like this anymore. This is old time rock, blues, and R&B. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. The recording has top notch sound and performances. It's worth the price alone for Paul Buterfield's harp blowing. All star bands usually don't work out so well, but this one is definetly the exception.

3 out of 5 stars Good Night Irene.......2006-08-09

Bought the CD for Levon's recording of "Irene Goodnight" Best rendition ever.

5 out of 5 stars My toes are tapping! .......2006-05-22

It is a must buy.
Can't wait until it arrives.
All my body cells keep saying, give me more of that music!
:-)

4 out of 5 stars Levon Helm and RCO AllStars Live at the Palladium NYC, NEw Years Eve 1977- Bringin' in a great 78........2006-05-15

It was with much anticipation that I purchased this disc. I have always loved the Band, and I think Levon had one of the greatest voices in "Rock and Blues" music. He makes you believe it when he sings it! He is also one of the all time best drummers in the genre. Any band that includes Levon Helm, Paul Butterfield, "Duck" Dunn, Dr. John, Howard Johnson, etc. is bound to be good.

I think this disc does a much better job than the original studio release (Levon Helm and the RCO AllStars) of allowing the talent of this band to shine through. The addition of some traditional blues tunes (Born in Chicago, Got My Mojo WOrkin, Goddnight Irene) and "Ophelia" from Levon's days in the Band add to the flavor of the original studio recording. The tunes from the original disc sound better in live setting, particularly "Milk Cow Boogie," "Blues so Bad" and "Sing, Sing Sing." Levon Helm and the RCO Allstars are a monster band live, yet they are able to play together as a cohesive unit. It is obvious that this band was about playing music together, leaving their egos at the door.

For some good-time music, buy this disc. Levon Helm Studios managed to pick an inaguaral "vault" release that packages a whole lot of soul into a small container. I can't wait to hear their next release!

An A-list of musically diverse acolytes surrounds the venerable country icon on this concert recording, which pays richer dividends than its studio-album predecessor, The Great Divide. Artists from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones and Vince Gill to Keith Richards help celebrate one of the richest legacies in American music. Though some hit-and-miss is inevitable, the teaming with Richards, Ryan Adams, and Hank Williams III on "Dead Flowers" romps all over the Rolling Stones' original, while the duet with mentor Ray Price, who enjoyed an early hit with Nelson's "Night Life," shows a sense of history too often missing from such demographic-driven projects. Other highlights include the sweet-voiced balladry of Jones on "Lonestar" and a luminous rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" by Gill. As for the misfires: Adams and Nelson sound like they're in different keys on Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come"; Toby Keith isn't even a poor man's Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman"; and the very idea of Matchbox Twenty singing "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" is ludicrous. Even when the material and guest vocalists don't mesh, Nelson's guitar punctuation remains an understated (and underrated) delight. --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Stars and Guitars - Willie Nelson & Friends.......2006-11-10

While the overall quality and tracks are good, I think the over mixing of
background crowd applause becomes quite annoying after the first couple
of tracks. In other words the duration of background applause should have
been reduced in time by 60%.
So much for live recordings!

5 out of 5 stars I Love Willie!.......2006-07-18

This is a great group of work with the exception of just a couple songs. But anyone who is truly a Willie fan will enjoy it for the spirit it represents!

For What it's Worth with Cheryl Crow is just wonderful! Willie and Cheryl together.....Can't get any better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Willie's Perfect "Picnic"!.......2004-06-07

I love Willie and this has become one of my favorite live "Wille Albums"! All of the songs on this recording are wonderful and distinctly reveal Willie's ability as guitarist, songwriter, and performer. The many people who he invited to perform with him have been influenced by him and are proud to be a part of this album. There is no gimmick-madness trying to make some last minute money with an old country legend here!

Additionally, I have to say that those who did not like Aaron Neville's 'Stardust' need to listen to it again (and again!). It is the subtlety of Willie's vocals with Neville's unique singing ability that makes the song perhaps one of the best covers I have heard of 'Stardust'. Long live Willie! This is Willie revealing his genius. Buy this CD!
