The come-from-nowhere success of Shania Twain's previous album, The Woman in Me, proved that the world was ready for a combination of traditional instruments, girl-power themes, and dance-pop dynamics. Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: she and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly. --Michael McCall

great cd......to be used as a bagel plate.......2007-01-25
Ever notice how all country music girls are attractive? That's because the industry that writes all their songs for them need a pretty face so they can sell their records in higher quantities. If you think these artists write all their own songs then you must be naive enough to believe that Jessica Simpson is popular because of her music talent and not her looks. Why do you think country music lyrics are all the same? 'All my exes were at the family reunion', 'Her teeth were stained but her heart was pure', I mean come on, they're all written by the same industry. Real musicians aren't usually attractive, because they're too busy writing their own music to care.
Cheerful Pop Girl Power........2007-01-13
This is both a good & different album than any other Country based music I've heard. Probably because it really isn't Country? After several listenings, I came to the conclusion that this was 70% Pop, 20% Country, & 10% Disco. I'll leave that debate to those more familiar with those genre's. This was a very lively, even optimistic group of songs. Shania's voice was better with the faster songs. These are the ones I thought were done the best. "When," the only cynical tune on a cheerful album. It is a "yea right," tune that felt like it did not belong. Perhaps, thats why it stuck out? "From This Moment," certainly a smooth love ballad if there ever was one. Shania sang this from the heart, & it came through exquisitely. "Man I Feel Like A Woman," a feel good girl song with drums, electric guitar, & some mild fiddles. "Love Gets Me Everytime," more of a traditional love song with single girl meeting a guy & falling in love, with a fast tempo. "Come On Over," strong Accordion with one friend comforting another. "Your Still The One," probably her biggest hit? A smoothly done slow tempo tune about a couple who proved the naysayers wrong by staying together.
At the very top of her game!.......2006-10-21
Shania Twain is an excellent performer and this album represents in my opinion some of her best work. I think her personality comes across strongly on this album and the songs are great.
I must admit I don't like what Shania Twain's later music evolved into nearly as much as this older stuff. I think in this album she was more driven by her own inner creativity and less by mass marketing concerns.
The ballads here are heartfelt and the faster songs convey an enthusiasm for life and youthful exuberance. While Shania is certainly sexy with a lot of charisma, she is also an incredible performer and worthy of her reputation. I can still remember the first time I heard her on THE WOMAN IN ME. I still love this album as well.
If you are going to own one or two Shania Twain albums and not get any others, I recommend that this is one of the two to buy. If you don't like the earlier country sound, try her newer stuff. However, I think this older material is more representative of where her heart truly lies and for me it comes across lound and clear through the speakers.
This could be a greatest hits CD.......2006-08-08
This CD by Shania Twain could be a greatest hits CD. There is a lot of hits on this CD. There are 11 songs on this CD that were singles on country music radio. Man! I Feel Like A Woman is a fun song that is up-beat and a good dance tune. I'm Holdin' On To Love To Save My Life is another up-beat song on this CD that you could dance to. The first single Love Gets me Every Time is about how love gets her by surprise and she has gone and done it again (Fell In Love). Don't Be Stupid is a good song with sounds of fiddles when the song starts out. The video is very good also. It reminds me of The River Dancers. From This Moment On with Bryan White is a very good job of vocal collaberation. They both do a very good job on this song together. You're Still The One is about her love for her husband and the video is very sexy and romantic. Honey, I'm Home is my favorite song on this CD. The woman has a bad day and she comes home and has her husband treat her like a queen. She asks him to pour her a cold one and fix her something to eat and fix her a treat. The end of the song she ask him to massage her and it makes her feel better. That Don't Impress Me Much is a song about men who love to show off and no matter who they are and what they do it doesn't impress her at all. You've Got A Way is the last song and it is very romantic about a man and a woman and how he makes her feel good about herself. All the songs on this CD are very good and I enjoy every one of them. This is one CD that Shania Twain will never out do with any other CD.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

In the opening song of "Something Wonderful," Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel sings, "All the sounds of the Earth are like music." They most definitely are when Terfel surrounds them with his resonant baritone. Every phrase of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is imbued with uncommon sensitivity, impeccable phrasing, and dazzling beauty. Terfel's rich and meaty voice shares a plate with delicate pianissimos, unabashed sentimentality, and swaggering forthrightness. He successfully tackles songs originally written for women. In "It Might as Well Be Spring," he transforms dippy into dapper. And he turns "Bali Hai" into a foreboding, demanding, and seductive call; the listener must helplessly succumb to the world of his sensitive manliness. His interpretations of the old standards--"If I Loved You," "Soliloquy," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Some Enchanted Evening"--are stellar. Despite the temporary lulls caused by the second-class songs from "Allegro," Terfel does a first-class job of bringing them to life. Undoubtedly one of the best crossover records of all time. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

I have just been introduced........2007-01-22
I came across the CD by sheer accident and am I glad I did. Wonderful music. Thanks for the music Bryn.
Great Music + Terrific Lyrics +Decent Singing = Very Nice CD.......2005-01-27
While not an expert on technical singing I really, really like this CD. I think Terfel's voice is pretty decent & he sings both male/female lead R & H songs for a total of twenty cuts. One cut I really enjoyed , but had never heard before was the song "So Far"
from R & H's "Allegro" with those Richard Roger's hooks & terrific Oscar Hammerstein lyrics. Felt that the orchestra on this session made a good move using the original orchestrations for a classic R & H feel. I concur with the reviewer regarding the miking of Terfel's voice in this session which seems too low forcing the listener to turn up the volumne.
A new meaning of throat singing........2004-06-11
I cannot believe that the critics of today can rave about such an inferior singer as Byrn Terfel. He sings so badly, I can't believe he has had the career he's had. I don't care how many roles he's sung, he hasn't any vocal technique at all. If anyone would care to hear great singing, buy the; "Thomas L. Thomas" Voice of Firestone video and listen to a great Welsh singer. This is a great artist and vocal technician. Try; "John Charles Thomas," "Lawrence Tibbett," or "Nelson Eddy." Bryn Terfel couldn't carry their music cases!
Superb matchmaking in Terfel's R&H recital.......2004-03-09
You might think that it is a very superflous mismatch for an opera singer to try his vocal cords on the Broadway songs of Rodgers & Hammerstein. However, in this R&H offering by Bryn Terfel, he proves that it is a perfect match between singer and repertoire for a classical crossover record of this pedigree. Terfel communicates the essence of each of the 20 songs to the listener, and allows them to sound fresh and new. And it helps that he has been a R&H fan for many years with the music already close to his heart. He is given superb backing from the well-conducted Opera North forces an warm, natural recording.
From the first phrase of Terfel's uplifting opening version of "Oh, what a beautiful morning" from Oklahoma!, we listeners intuitively know that this is not going to be your superflous run-of-the-mill classical crossover offering of R&H songs. Terfel uses his big voice to great effect in Billy Bigelow's two songs from Carousel, "If I loved you" and the pivotal "Soliloquy" that builds up to a devastating climax. When he does this for Emile's two big solos in South Pacific, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "This Nearly Was Mine," he also makes them sound fresh and intuitively conveys their essence. He also thrills us even when his voice is soft and tender, such as on Lietunant Cable's "Younger than Springtime" and especially on Captain von Trapp's "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music.
Besides the obvious highlights in this R&H offering, Terfel unearths some new delights. He does this by trying his vocal cords on songs that were originally intended for women, most notably in Nettie's two big numbers in Carousel, "June is busting out all over" and "You'll never walk alone", which he pulls off convincingly in a straight-laced and serious manner without sounding cliched. (In the booklet, "You'll never walk alone" was stated as being sung by the Chorus, but then in the show, it is sung by Nettie.) He is also wistful on "It might as well be Spring" from State Fair, and philosophical on Lady Thiang's "Something Wondreful" from The King and I. He also evokes a dreamlike quality on Bloody Mary's "Bali Ha'i" in South Pacific. The other unusual thing that Terfel does is include some unknown songs and treat them ravishingly. Four of them are from Allegro, highlighted by a charming "So Far," a reflective "A Fellow needs a girl" and a powerful "Come Home", and he also sings "No Other Love" from Me and Juliet as ravishingly as "I Have Dreamed."
If I have any quibbles, there are only two minor ones. Terfel's R&H offering runs for 74 minutes, and still has six minutes of empty space on a CD. I'm sure that Terfel could have given thought to the Mother Abbess's "Climb Every Mountain" from The Sound of Music, which I consider a more universal and less-cliched song than "You'll never walk alone" from Carousel. It would have suited his full-throated, big-voiced characteristic very well. Also, this offering of R&H seems to be lopsided to emphasise more of the first part of R&H. Sixteen tracks cover R&H from Oklahoma to South Pacific, with four tracks that cover their second half from The King and I to The Sound of Music. As such I would have liked to hear him sing a more balanced repertoire of R&H songs with equal emphasis to both halves of their collaboration. Perhaps he might record a Volume 2 with songs from the latter part of their collaboration in the near future. But with 74 delightful minutes of Terfel's R&H offering, how could anybody complain about the quality of this recital, especially with a lavish booklet complete with copious notes by R&H expert Ethan Mordden and full lyrics.
Overall, though, I'm very sure that this R&H offering is both a highlight of Terfel's discography, and can ably recommended with his recording of Schubert songs to anybody who wants to get to know his work well. It can also be recommended to Rodgers & Hammerstein fans old and new.
By the way, I also recommend the Rodgers & Hammerstein Songbook for Orchestra, with another superlative Telarc offering by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Erich Kunzel. This recital is just as outstanding as Terfel's R&H offering. And, there is a wealth of cast recordings that new R&H fans will want to snap up, so this Terfel disc will be an ideal stepping-stone for them.
Broadway or Opera... This CD is indeed ýSomething Wonderfulý.......2003-07-25
It becomes clearer with every disk Bryn releases... he turns whatever he touches into gold! This CD is indeed `Something Wonderful'. From the first listen I was in love with this disk and can't get enough.
To begin, Rodgers and Hammerstein couldn't be more appropriately sung. From a time before electric amplification the sweeping melodies of Richard Rodgers were intended to be sung as Bryn illustrates. As I say every time, his diction is impeccable, his musicianship is unsurpassed, and his enthusiasm is wonderful. As for Oscar Hammerstein, I'm sure he doesn't mind a little foreign accent... because every word is clear and understandable.
To compare the accent of Terfel to Pavarotti and Carreras is simply misguided. Although Pavarotti and Carreras are top-notch for what they do, neither pursues `Broadway' music seriously. Their ventures into the medium are limited to Gala concerts and the occasional snippet on a CD... not on stage depicting a role, but simply to sing a beautiful song. Mr. Terfel, on the other hand, researches the roles, coaches them, and is constantly pursued to perform them. His accent is one of slight vowel or consonant differences, which do not detract from the beautiful music. The music is well done and the story clear. Lets not nitpick diction or the French will have our hides for Les Miserables!
For the music, the recording quality is great. One reviewer mentioned poor sound quality and I do believe that person may have a bad disk or player... on my end the sound is full and robust; Bryn's voice dominates the sound. The orchestrations are full and lush. When dealing with modern houses and theatres the orchestra pits are usually quite small, and consequently the ensembles themselves. CDs like this one allow for fully orchestrated music to be heard, with a large symphony of musicians. The numbers that utilize chorus, which sings very well, are well balanced.
This disk is a great buy in my book. Bryn Terfel is a phenomenal performer and he sings this genre excellently. Check out his `If Ever I Would Leave You', `Under The Stars', `We'll Keep a Welcome', `Songs of My Welsh Home', and numerous classical recordings like `Opera Arias', `Meet Bryn Terfel', `The Vagabond', `Wagner', `Schumann Lieder', and an large collection of full opera recordings. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

"Lord, How Come Me Here".......2007-06-18
I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.
And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

WOW!.......2007-03-22
You know, after owning both the CD and VHS of this performance, and having been coached by Sylvia Olden Lee herself, it is no wonder why spiritual mean so much to me. And these two ladies bare their souls and bring these masterpieces to life! WOW!!!
uhm......yeah right!!.......2006-06-21
Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.
scadalise my name.......2004-10-29
this isn't that good specially after hearing William Warfeild sing it. You can find him at www.wlym.com
Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
... takes it on and puts it on the canvas by the end of the first round.
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

Everybody's favorite precocious sprite of a soprano comes out with her third album in Dream a Dream. It's only been two years since Charlotte Church's smash debut, Voice of an Angel, but that's a big chunk of the Welsh singer's life span so far. This latest is basically a Christmas album, so full of festive cheer you'd never guess it was recorded in the summer. Even the glummest of moods will disappear when you hear Charlotte's infectious take on chestnuts such as "Winter Wonderland" and "Little Drummer Boy" (and having the London Symphony Orchestra as your backup band doesn't hurt either). And on top of that is a really special treat: the title song (borrowing an unforgettable classical melody) which blends Church's soaring vocals with the tender voice of young country prodigy Billy Gilman. --Sarah Chin

I bought this CD after watching the music video of the same name. Their performance of "dream a dream" is exquisite. The fact that they wrote the lyrics just adds icing to an already magnificent cake!

A must-have for Christmas music lovers.......2006-12-07
this cd is pure magic...almost 20 great christmas songs on one cd sung by the voice of an angel herself..there may be a few mixed reviews by some people who must be opera voice teachers because there is nothing wrong with this cd...it is flawless....charlotte's soaring vocals, the beautiful orchestra and background singers, the whole cd has the christmas feel to it..."o come all ye faithfull" has to be heard to be believed...it is breathtaking...i love charlottes take on "winter wonderland" and "ding dong merrily on high" ..made me want to go dance in the snow or something.....she hits every note beautifully..buy this cd...i bought it back in 2000 and have listened to it at every Christmastime since or Christmas doesnt feel the same.
Gorgeous! .......2005-12-07
Charlotte Church has done it again! She is extremely talented. Even if she was 25 when she put this out, she'd be amazing. But she was only 14-15 years old when she recorded this! Beautiful. This album has great choral accompaniments and fabulous orchestra arrangements. It is a little on the high side in certain songs, but it still sounds amazing. I love her voice.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

great music, country and otherwise.......2007-04-16
This great 1976 release from ONJ was a #2 hit on the country album charts, and #13 on the all-genre pop charts. Too bad it only released one single, but what a fantastic one it was. "Come on Over" is one of Olivia's best and most moving performances, and one of my all time favorite songs. It was a #5 country hit and #23 pop hit, also topping the AC charts. There is more great music to be found here as well. I love her version of "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," and her interpretation of "Jolene" is a good listen as well. It's more fast and upbeat than Dolly's, with a bit more urgency in the vocal I think (although Dolly's is excellent as well). "Pony Ride" is a nice, mellow ballad. "Don't Throw It all Away" and "Small Talk and Pride" would have made nice singles, especially on the country side.
The cover is beautiful, a cool effect and different from a lot of the covers of the time. (It's too bad MCA's stripped-down packaging for their "Compact Disc-Compact Price" series never has more artwork included than the front cover).
All in all, this is a very good album and worth owning.
Olivia's best........2006-01-30
This album brings back so many memories of better times. It means a lot to me. Many great songs are here but "Who are you now" is my all-time favorite. It's such a beautiful melody with a stunning orchestration. It gives me an immense pleasure when I listen to it. Thanks Olivia for the gift of this album.
My favorite Olivia album.......2004-06-18
This used to be one of my most-played albums, and I still enjoy listening to it. The title track was written by the Bee Gees and appeared on one of their albums, but they didn't release their version as a single.
There are some classic covers - Jolene (Dolly), Long and winding road (Beatles), Greensleeves (I've heard it claimed that this was originally written by King Henry the 8th around 1580), Smile for me (Lynn Anderson) and Blue eyes crying in the rain (which Olivia probably covered after hearing Willie Nelson's version, but country fans know that it was originally sung by Roy Acuff).
Don't throw it all away, written by George Benson, is another great cover. I don't remember who had the pop hit with it. Dave and Sugar had a country hit with it, but they probably covered Olivia's version.
The songs written especially for this album are wonderful. I certainly can't agree with the reviewer who claims they all sound the same. Yes, they have something in common - they are all soft, romantic songs of the type Olivia does particularly well - and I love them all.
I recommend this as a starting point for fans of country music who want to buy some of Olivia's music. It is rare for any of these tracks to find their way onto compilations, so you can always add a hits collection later.
If country is not your favorite music, you might be best to try some of Olivia's other music first.
Tepid middle-of-the-road from a fine vocalist.......2003-04-01
Take that subject line as you will. It is neither offensive, nor congratulatory. 'Come On Over' came during a period in Olivia's career where she was churning out records faster than a large African nation produces children. Her music is predominantly called 'country', but I often feel that this was an incorrect tag Olivia got stuck with. Despite a few residing melodies or a twangy guitar here and there, Olivia's music around this period is more easy-listening light pop than anything else.
However, my personal bias against the term 'country' aside. 'Come On Over' was her first album of 1976, following two in 1975 (namely 'Clearly Love' and 'Have You Been Mellow'). By the end of the ensuing year she would have released two more studio albums and a greatest hits compilation. It has to be said that 'Come On Over' is not really the pick of the litter. Like many artists at the time, 'Come On Over' contains a few blindingly good songs and the rest becomes average filler. Of course with Olivia's freakishly perfect voice wrapped around the melodies, this 'filler' sounds remarkably good - but still. Filler is filler.
The album opens with a bang via Dolly Parton's thigh-slappin' country rocker 'Jolene'. Olivia's version is infinitely better than Dolly's, with a multitude of ear-piercingly high vocals and fantastic treatment of the lyrics. It is actually one of Olivia's best known tunes down here in Australia, for what reason I am not sure but there you go. Useless fact of the day. Track 2 is 'Pony Ride', one of the most atmospheric and beautiful ballads of Olivia's entire catalogue. I would go so far as to say it is the best vocal performance she ever gave, but with so many songs to choose from I fear I'd be doing some other gem too big an injustice. The third track on the disc is the Bee Gees penned title track, a beautiful song which Olivia still says is one of her favourite songs and often performs it acoustically on tour. A real chance to show off the pipes here, this is Olivia at her mid-tempo best. 'Who Are You Now' is a gorgeous Olivia ballad which epitomises why she was so successful in the seventies, she does a fine job of the Beatles' 'Long And Winding Road', and 'It'll Be Me' at least injects a bit of late-night uptempo jazz into the mix.
Unfortunately you also have have pointless covers of the bluegrass 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain' and 'Greensleeves' and a handful of middling ballads. Most Olivia fans will admit that she has done a lot of better songs than half the tunes included on this album.
'Come On Over' is not a bad album, but it is not a particularly memorable one. Luckily the price here at Amazon is so ridiculously low it won't break the bank balance too much, but if you are new to Olivia or just beginning to collect her back catalogue there are far better choices out there.
The first time I saw her.......2003-02-01
I fell in love with Olivia Newton-John the first time I saw her...and 28 years later I still do. She and John Denver were performing a duet called "Fly Away", a 1976 hit she adds a backing vocal to. She sings the title phrase in response to him. This contribution helped "Fly Away" reach #1 AC,#12 Country and #13 on the Pop charts.
In January of 1976 "Fly Away" was knocked off the top of the AC chart by Olivia Newton-John's combination "Let It Shine" and "He Ain't Heavy...He's My Brother," and three months later she did it again, knocking out his "Looking for Space" with "Come On Over".
Olivia Newton-John told Billboard that her singing on "Come On Over" was a conscious effort to stretch beyond the breathy vocal style that characterized much of her earlier days. "I really love that song-and I'm getting confidence in doing songs like that. In each album I try to add something different. But I'd like to keep what I established myself with. Because I don't use all of my voice, people think that I have much less voice than I actually use. On the next album I show more voice than ever before."
The portrait of Olivia Newton-John found on the album cover is her most beautiful. The story goes that the photographic session to make the cover was not going well...then someone got the idea to just throw her into the swimming pool and photograph that. The result is the album cover.
"Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" amd Olivia Newton-John's rendition of "Greensleeves" on this album is certainly illustrative of that. She reverts back to her native tongue and becomes an English Noble Woman."Greensleeves" is haunting, eerie,bone-chilling and charming simultaneously. I do not want to get on the wrong side of that woman.
The songs written for Olivia Newton-John by John Farrar are timeless classics. She worked well with him and the results are love songs that Olivia Newton-John does particularly well.

A very good CD to buy.......2005-07-06
I have bought many CD regarding American patriotic songs but it is the one that I prefer. The songs are sung in a very classic way and so, there are easy to listen. Jon English as a tenor gives an excellent performance. On the piano, Rob Carriker gives also an excellent performance; he does not try to cover the voice of Jon English but just to support his voice. So, Jon English and Rob Carriker form a very fine duo and the quality of recording is excellent. The choice of songs is also excellent. I strongly recommend this CD.
What an Excellent Work of Art!.......2002-08-30
John English has a booming and resounding voice. Well suited for the rough and tough songs of our countries historic wars. It is an excellent buy, and I recommend it to any fans of great songs and American historics!
Excellent!.......2002-08-30
This cd is excellent! I reccomend it to everyone!! Jonathon English has got an amazing voice!
What A Blast - A Fun and Inspiring CD.......2002-07-30
I have to admit - I didn't know what I'd be getting when I bought this album. I love Americana and have known some of these songs all my life: K-K-K-Katy, Keep the Home-Fires Burning, and Tenting on the Old Camp Ground. Others that are listed I had never heard before: The Soldier's Tear, When Alexander Takes His Ragtime Band to France, and the very funny Captain Jinks! From first to last I found this CD a joy to hear. Jon English has a beautiful voice, and he sings with such clarity that you can understand every word! There are songs that will get your feet taping, and others that will bring a tear to your eye. The chorus is quite obviously not a professional choir, and that's all the better! They sing with an infectious energy and spirit that'll make you want to sing along. Add into that the horns, flute and percussion and this album becomes very pleasant experience. This is one of the best CD's I've heard in a long time, and I heartily recommend it.
