Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A curious coda from a truly peculiar bunch. Who Cares a Lot is the swan song of the most engaging band to come to the fore when the late-'80s and early-'90s funk-punk hordes defiled the land. What set the San Francisco-based quintet apart all the lukewarm Chili Peppers of the time was powerful musicianship (few hard-rock bands could match them onstage in their Real Thing prime) and a contrary disposition. When the sweeping "Epic" briefly transformed FNM into MTV darlings, they responded by recording their most challenging work, the jarringly unpredictable Angel Dust, a commercial lapse from which they never quite recovered. Then there was their unsettling taste for easy-listening sounds, rather too generously evidenced on this best-of package by Lionel Richie's "Easy," Bacharach and David's "This Guy's in Love with You," the Bee Gees' "I Started a Joke," and "Theme from Midnight Cowboy." Their adrenaline-drunk fans never knew whether to cry or laugh. Of course, their trademark extreme alt-rap-metal forays are also in evidence, from 1987's "We Care a Lot" (a puncturing parody of altruistic star sing-alongs) to the half dozen turn-out-the-lights tracks from 1998. Ultimately, no one ever found solace in Faith No More, but, as Who Cares a Lot affirms, they were often beyond belief. --Steven Stolder

This is a 2-disc collection of FNM tunes. Definitely can be divided into parts. The great tunes are on the first half of the first disc: We Care a Lot, Epic, Falling to Pieces, and Midlife Crisis. The second half has some good stuff: Digging the Grave and Gentle Art of Making Enemies are like thrash metal, with the later tune also reminiscent of Limp Bizkit at times. Evidence is almost an easy listening tune. The second disc is much shorter than the first, less than half an hour, and is pretty forgettable. So 4 stars, largely on the strength of disc one.

Look at all these big namers who can't handle success and they just fall apart after a brief spark or a couple of great records. Heck, Ozzy wrecked his best albums by re-recording the bass and drums just because he (or Sharon?)had a hissy with the underpaid, underappreciated band members. With Faith No More, you have steady growth, from one great record to another leap of gut-punch rock as good as and BETTER than 75% of the bands out during AND after their time. Why waste your money on anything lesser--these your boys!

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).

"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!

For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.

Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.

The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.

What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.

I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...

Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.

You really can't be disappointed. I promise.

If only we could have a visual as well!

Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.

As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

The Poor are (were?) a superb live band and brought the pub home with this awesome hard rock - almost metal - album. The overall sound is tight and controlled, but dirty, rebellious, raunchy, sweaty, early-morning and hung-over. Too slow to be metal, but too fast to be hard rock, this album is more drunk and loudmouthed than AC/DC, but has a clean, solid beat and rocks out more than Beasts of Bourbon. For you Aussies, think flanno shirts, rorty Toranas, slabs of VB and long hair. That's right - this stuff is not for those with mullets. Nearly every track is a winner - especially the hit headbanging special "More Wine Waiter Please" - and none merit skipping. Other highlights include "Hair Of The Dog", "Dirty Money", and "Tell Someone Who Cares". Slip this into your stolen Cash Converters CD player, crack a tinny, and bang your head...

Yep - these likeable Aussie chaps did just that. And didn't it work for them - scoring a spot in the US singles charts and making a name for themselves in their native Australia too. It sure helped that their drummer was a cousin to some members of AC/DC in terms of getting a tour support slot. He was later fired from memory.

The Poor started out as true backroom pub rock. Then figured out that they'd aimed themselves at an audience that owned half the AC/DC back catalogue and hadn't bought a new album since 1983, and quickly decided to right some decent tunes just to be on the safe side.

And what a result they got! The album kicks off with Poison and Dirty Money, a couple of lowdown rockers sure to get your foot pressed firmly to the floor. Man of War is more laid back with just Skenies' vocals rasping all over the joing. Then we get a little Aussie pub rock dumb with Tell Someone Who Cares. A little forced bu whne they rip into More Wine Waiter Please - their signature tune and hit, all is forgiven.

The album closes out with stuff like Downtown and Liar and Ride. This is a great album of heads down heavy rock - would I lie to you?!?


Oh - a quick addenda to this review. Before this scorching debut album this band - at the time still going by the moniker The Poor Boys put out an EP called Underfed. If you ever see this don't buy it. While two of the songs - Dirty Money and Ain't on the Chain were fixed up and made the cut for the album, the whole release is terrible from the music (two other tracks apart from the two already mentioned entitled Sex, and the other Anger) right through to the dodgy band photo and horrid cover art.

Rough & dirty hard rock - that would best describe the sound of one of the most ferrocious rock bands to come out of Australia in the past decade. Think early (Bon Scott) AC/DC, Rhino Bucket or Dirty Looks. For lack of a less used reviewer's cliche', the Poor were among the most underrated bands of the mid '90s. Appropriately, the first time I heard the Poor was when they opened for AC/DC on the Ballbreaker tour. Regretably, even opening up for AC/DC wasn't enough to get this band going in the Lollapalooza '90s. I knew from the first riff I heard that I was going to like this band. Tight, chest beating riffs, with a definite early AC/DC sound. And make no mistake about it - their show blew my head off. Here's the good news - the energy in their live show is not lost in this studio album. More good news - they have that raw dirty sound with excellent production, resulting in a very slick, very solid, & VERY heavy album for this genre of music. Pick up a copy while you can - looks like their album is in the cut out bin, which usually means its out of print.

      Faith No More changed the path of heavy music with their very unique style full of overwhelming versatile sounds they were capable of play hard rock, heavy metal, funk, pop , soul, very heavy songs and even ballads they were that unique and Mike Patton surelly can be described as a genious and all that mixture of sounds is included in this cd , you have to listen this compilation so you realize whos responsible for the progresion of 80s and 90s sound

      Like another reviewer of this compilation, I too will miss Faith No More. I will miss them dearly in fact. I remember vaguely when I was first exposed to FNM, it must have been about 12 years ago. That would have made me 12 years old...! The point I am trying to make is that FNM was a major part of many people's lives. If you are now in your mid to late 20's, you would have been in the age group that was probably heavily exposed to this music. As a result, it is not just the music that is an important factor in the extent to which individuals will miss FNM (that said, it was great music!), it is the meaning those individuals attached to the songs that FNM played. I met friends over FNM, passed exams over FNM, broke up with girlfriends over FNM etc, etc, as did countless others. A generation and myself learnt nearly every single lyric that Mosley and Patton ever recorded. These are the reasons why so many people feel that they have personally lost something that was held so dear to them. All of those memories, all of that vicarious learning, all of that meaning. I think this compilation does a reasonably good job of covering the deep tracks of the legacy that FNM left behind. It takes you through the early Mosley days through to the espousal of Patton. Patton's voice appears to drop in pitch dramatically from the "Real Thing" album relative to all subsequent albums. When I first heard "Angel Dust", I must admit, I felt slightly disappointed with the changed voice and the changed sound. However, with time I learnt to divorce myself slightly from the more commercial (I would argue) "Real Thing" FNM sound to appreciate this new darker sound, which seems to have pervaded into all of the successive albums. Of course, the rest is well covered elsewhere as the band produced two more fine albums without their original guitarist (whether he left or was ousted is not mutually agreed upon by James B. Martin and the rest of Faith No More), subsequent to which they suddenly broke up. I briefly met FNM once, just after they had released "Angel Dust". I was surprised to see that Patton had completely changed his physical appearance, a new look he would pretty much retain for the rest of his career with FNM. The others looked exactly the same as I had remembered. All of the members, contrary to the media reports, seemed extremely polite and subdued. Perhaps they had seen one too many airports, or maybe they were tired from touring or something at that particular time. I remember telling Patton how much I admired his work, to which he coyly replied that he was "flattered". As a musician myself, FNM have been a major influence. They will be sadly missed for their wonderfully open minded approach to music, their idiosyncrasies and for what they meant to their fans.

      Who would of thought that one of the most experimental, and influencial heavy metal bands of the past two decades would have broken up and relased a greatest hits album. Not me. I didn't even know they had any hits before or after Epic, a song that more resembles a noose than it does the band. They were a bunch of unknowns until then, and after they started experimenting crawled back to where they came from. I miss them, Just knowing that no more albums will be released makes me sad. If you don't know the band that well, pick this up. You can hear the humble begining's to the bitter sweet end.

      This is prophetic type music. These songs seem like a melody from the Lord's heart to yours. I've listened to it almost every night since it came in the mail. It's just a beautiful reassurance of His love. The bible says, when we accept Jesus as Saviour and Lord, we become part of His church, "the Bride of Christ". These are love songs to that bride.

      Then Somebody Cares is the cd for you. This cd starts with ethereal music and incorporates a rain stick. This opens your heart for Theresa's Music to remind you that you are worth something and it is never to late to make your dreams come true.
