About the Artist
I'm Robert Allen Shabarekh. I sing, write music and play about a dozen different instruments - some better than others. It all started in New London, CT at age 7 singing "Happy Trails To You" in the school talent show.

By the time I was 16 my best buddies and I had formed East Hampton, CT's proverbial high school band. As The Specials we played at all the local school dances and I even persuaded the movie theater owner to let us play between matinees on the weekend. That was definitely a first in our town.

Then came the stint in the U.S. Navy and I formed The Signalmen. The ship's captain liked the band so well he arranged for us to perform before officials and dignitaries in Italy, Subic Bay, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Africa and Hawaii.

After the Navy I spent several years on Staten Island performing with The Country Echoes. Just before going on a live radio broadcast the DJ realized he had trouble pronouncing my name. He asked who my favorite guitar player was and I replied that it was Duane Eddy. He said "Good. For today your name is Bob Dwayne." And it stuck.

The call of Nashville came next. While there I formed and fronted The Bob Dwayne Show, The Red Hot Ricochet Band, and Connection. We played country, top 40, southern rock, oldies and threw in some blues. Between the last two bands I spent about three years as a regular on the Grand Ole Opry fronting for Stonewall Jackson.

I performed at all the major (and some not so major) clubs in and around Nashville and did demo work at four different well-known studios. And I was on the road a lot; all over the country at state fairs, conventions, college campuses, tournaments, fund-raisers, sports arenas, auditoriums, military clubs, country clubs, night clubs, hotel lounges and ballrooms.

Now I'm in the Atlanta area and have re-claimed my real name. After performing with Class Reunion for a while, I formed Robert Allen & Co. and began playing locally. Then I went on an extended USO tour entertaining in Turkey, Greece, Italy and Spain. After returning I assisted at a studio doing everything from administration to demos.

After all the traveling and performing cover songs, I finally took the opportunity to stay put and record some of the material I've written over the years. I hope you enjoy Something To Remember Me By.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about 18-year-old Ben Lee's music is that you don't need to cut him any slack for his age. Lee's songs tell simple stories of innocent love and broken hearts balanced with a wicked sense of humor that is well beyond his years. Centering around his acoustic guitar and folksy voice, his second full-length album not only conjures up memories of a young Louden Wainright III but firmly establishes him as a seasoned songwriter. Perhaps the most remarkable part of Lee's writing is his ability to write from an 18-year-old perspective without sounding like a trite youngster or a pretentious kid, proving that writing about who you really are goes a lot farther than giving the people what they want. --Bill Snyder

5 out of 5 stars Surely a Memorable Effort.......2000-04-12

Three years ago, after seeing the video for "New Song" on MTV's 120 Minutes, I immediately had to find this album. "New Song" was the hook, but what reeled me in were the stellar tracks populating the rest of the album. Lee, not yet 18, makes a remarkable showing on this album. His music could simply be described as a boy and his guitar, but that fails to underscore his talent as a songwriter.

Much of Lee's work on this album (and on his earlier Grandpaw Would) are stories of a young man searching for love, and searching for himself. These themes are present in standouts like "How to Survive a Broken Heart" and "Career Choice," the former of which brought Lee a wider audience through its appearance on the soundtrack to There's Something About Mary. Lee also shows a sense of humor in "End of the World," and "Household Name," a song about 80's television teen idols. The entire album is solid all the way through, and yet leaves room for great artistic growth. Look for great things to come from Ben Lee, but don't forget this one, either.

Quick Picks: If you like Ben Lee, try these (and vice versa): Luscious Jackson, Rufus Wainwright, Lotion

5 out of 5 stars Ben Lee is God........1999-09-27

I listen to this album all day long. I love Ben Lee. To write a masterpiece like this at ages 17 and 18 is pure genius. Highly recommended to anyone who needs a good dose of great music and great lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT CD!!!.......1999-09-03

It's a blend of Grandpaw Would and Breathing Tornadoes, so it has the refined and complex nature of BTs AND the brilliant simplicity that was so great about GW. The combination comes out folky and easy to enjoy. Even his song that is made up of only his voice (and no instruments) is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Ben Lee, more than Claire's boy.......1999-06-17

I have been a Ben Lee fan for years, and this is album is absolutely mesmerizing. It is mature well beyond the seventeen years Ben was when he recorded it, and I would be surprised to find one person who doesn't at least respect this man for his talent. You can't miss with this one; you'll NEVER find it doubled as a coaster or a frisbee.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......1999-01-28

Although I loved Ben Lee's first solo album, Grandpaw Would, I love this album even more. Lovely melodies and highly singable lyrics. I can't shut myself up when I hear "End of the World!" And some may recognize "How To Survive a Broken Heart" from "There's Something About Mary." Mr. Lee is a very talented and this album proves it.

5 out of 5 stars BEST COUNTRY ARTIST.......2002-10-29

It's a nice summer night in 1962. We are at a bandstand in a large park. The band is set to play. The singer, wearing a fancy country outfit, does a last minute mike check. On the stage are female backup singers, piano, bass, drums, steel and electric guitar players. The band starts to play. I see that their band sounds like the one Ricky Nelson has; however, the singer has a strong country voice, like Jim Reves. It sound very loud and clear thru the PA sound system-----SO, this is what you will hear on this OUTSTANDING DISC. You are not listening to a record; you are THERE! AT THE CONCERT. More than half the songs are excellent, with good melody lines. The band lays down a nice rock n' roll beat. The piano player gets into a nice Jerry Lee style on many cuts. The steel man does his thing. The band is outstanding. And---Robert must be a very nice guy to let us download his entire CD. IMPORTANT: you need LIQUID AUDIO PLAYER to decode the files. I wish I knew the address to write to MR. Allen.

These recordings are culled from old radio broadcasts and feature a young Rosie singing with her unique punchy verve. Her duets with Bing Crosby add to the fun.

          Album Description

17-year-old Australian Ben Lee has been recording and touring since the tender age of thirteen. Following his previous effort, Grandpa Would, these fourteen cuts show a more mature, acoustic-based artist with plenty of room left to grow. From the great "Ketchum" to the innocently catchy a cappella "A Month Today," Ben Lee truly does give us Something to Remember Me By. Modular. 2005.
