Don't read into it too much... just prepare to laugh.......2005-11-04
It's not anti-gay... it's not cleverly disguised subversive wit... it just is what it is - spontaneous acoustic made up on the spot tunes with extremely hilarious tongue-in-cheek improvised lyrics delivered first-take that loosely revolve around a homosexual theme. If that bothers you then don't listen. If you're looking for something deeply intellectual then look elsewhere. If you want to laugh yourself senseless then buy this album. It sags a bit in places, but tunes like "I've Got Drugs (Out of the Mist)", "Hot C@*ck Annie", "Queen Boys", and "Baby Greaser George" never lose their novelty.
review.......2005-10-16
i gave this album 5 stars because it fulfilled my every fantasy and filled every hole of my desire with creamy sound splurgement.
Utterly Hilarious (for the most part).......2003-01-13
Let me put it this way: If you are at all amused by Wesley Willis, Ween, The Moldy Peaches, or any other disturbed "outsider" act, you'll love this album. It's about a half hour's worth of surprisingly catchy "anti-folk" with (apparently ad-libbed) lyrics about sodomy and child molestation that sounds like it was recorded on a boom box. What more could you ask for? Find it used if you can.
Artful lo-fi style, grace and humor.......2002-01-10
Far from being "designed to instill homophobia" this is probably one of the most irreverently gay albums ever made, certainly the only specifically "gay" music I've ever been able to stomach listening to. (And that's because it's totally sarcastic and satirical. Personally, politics and music don't mix in my ears very well. For example: horrible bands like Kitchens of Distinction and the Murmurs.)
But that's all totally beside the point; the naughty Flemion boys are also musical geniuses. You might have the disposition and opinions of Ralph Reed and still find yourself tapping your foot and singing along to "Baby Greaser George"; the Frogs are that infectious. (Like a wonderful disease, and they mean to be.)
This isn't music for slow-witted listeners. They won't know what to make of it and will come away with odd conclusions like "designed to instill homophobia." Right, that's why the cover of the album features a picture of a little boy wearing a gay-pride pin!
Don't be dissuaded by the gay stuff (if you're the type who usually is,) this is an album for everyone and anyone who appreciates intelligent, fun, and challenging music. The gay angle (aside from being personally interesting to at least one of the brothers) is really just a ruse to create the funny, shocking humor that will make you laugh every time you find yourself humming one of their contageous melodies. And if it bothers you that much...buy one of their other albums.
words too distracting.......2001-09-25
The music is somewhat clever, perhaps a little better than the average amateur rock band (they know more than 3 chords), but nothing like TMBG or the Beatles. There is some clever mixing and a few extra instruments brought in for effect on a few tracks. But what mostly makes this CD unique is the words, which seem designed to instill homophobia. Every track (except the first, which is about being stoned) is a song about "what that gay guy did to me on the beach" and "this is a faggy town we live in". This theme is overused and distracting.

F*CK Pearl Jam.......2005-05-27
Grunge/punk/alternative before grunge and alternative existed. More mellow than Mudhoney, a little more punk-ish than Pearl Jam. I can say I like all the songs 100% but it 95% for sure. Worth the money, worth an ear, especially for the 90's hard rock lovers.
Green River is the birth of Grunge.......2005-05-22
I really like this album. Its short but to the point. It shows that they can really make good music. Come on Down and Swallow My Pride are the best one the album. Corner of My Eye and Tunnel of Love are also awesome. Anyway, definetly pick this up it'll let you know where grunge started and how it first sounded.
the seminal grunge band.......2004-07-15
i think this is a great ep from the original grunge band. its raw but thats part of the attraction. i agree that come on down and swallow my pride are the best tracks on the disk. this is a good album for anyone who enjoys grunge/punk/alternative. you also will enjoy it if you are a fan of mudhoney, soundgarden or early nirvana. a great addition to your 80's/90's rock collection
Very Interesting.......2000-03-01
Green River's COME ON DOWN is one of those albums that you own to satisfy curiosity more than to listen to. There are at least two grunge classics on this album ("Come On Down" and "Swallow My Pride"), and some filler stuff too. Mostly you wouldn't imagine these guys going on to form Pearl Jam, but it is very believable that Mark Arm and Steve Turner stepped up to Mudhoney from here. If you like Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, just be warned that this sounds NOTHING like what they've gone on to do since. If you like Mudhoney, this is sort of like the Young Mudhoneys.
GREEN RIVER IS THE KING OF GRUNGE.......1999-12-05
Green River rocks period. If you are any kind of Pearl Jam fan you have got to add Green River to your CD collection.

I love this cd, its deep and scavangers your soul highlighting raw emotions, lot of good rythms and lyrics are pleasing, unique and to the heart.
Good Cd.......2003-03-30
This is the first and only (?) dinosaur album. The songs on here were great it went from slow to fast. I like all the songs on here I think out of all the dinosaur jr albums this one has the best vocals and songwriting. But it wouldnt be until 1987 when the band would change thier name to dinosaur jr and rip apart the indie scene with thier next cd your living all over me. The songs on here are the type of songs you can enjoy at any time of day. The songa on here are like easy jam songs like something led zepplin would do, in some cases J mascis sounds a bit like neil young. My all time fave on this album had to be severed lips that song is amazing its not fast and not slow its a song you can bop your head to. My least fave was pointless while pointless is fast punkish song its just J and lou (I think) shouting were starving. Anyways if your new to dinsaur jr dont get this one first its not the type of dinosaur jr that you think, it doesnt sound like thier stuff from your livin all over me or bug and isnt near their stuff from where you been. So buy this if you want a completely different dinosaur jr. Also get your living all over and bug.
the title of this CD is Dinosaur, not Dinosaur Jr........2000-06-04
Despite crappy recording quality this CD is a standout. This CD contains J's best lyrics and music, it's much better than anything else they've ever done. This is the definitive Dinosaur Jr. CD, it's usually hard to find, but it's definitely worth searching for. Get it as soon as possible.
DINOSAUR.......1999-12-02
You cannot beat this album! If you are a dinosaur fan and do not own this, do it now! Going throughout life without hearing the beauty of dinosaur at their finest is a crying shame.
Some people think this is the ONLY Dinosaur album!.......1999-10-13
If you missed this album's first release, or didn't know that Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Sentridoh, Folk Implosion) and J Mascis used to jam together back in the day, buy this CD! The first two albums this unit released as Dinosaur (later re-issued as Dinosaur Jr.) have been highly influential to what's now become two generations of punk and indie rockers. You must find a place for this disk in your collection! P.S. Listeners to this album should check out Lou's devotional, "The Freed Pig" on Sebadoh III.

A Basque Zarzuela Full of Lovely Melody and Catchy Dance Rhythms.......2006-07-13
The music of Jesús Guridi (1886-1961) has been a real discovery for me in the past few years. This recording of his 1926 zarzuela 'El Caserío' ('The Homestead') increases my enjoyment of his always tuneful and skillfully orchestrated music by adding the one of his theatrical works to Naxos's Spanish Classics series. This three-act zarzuela is the first of several Guridi wrote to Spanish (as opposed to Basque) libretti but on Basque themes. The story is a kind of 'Meistersinger' set in a fictional Basque village. Santi, an aging homestead-owner, a kind of Hans Sachs, loves his niece Ana Mari, the daughter of his long-dead love who had instead married one of Santi's brothers. She, too, loves her uncle and would indeed marry him except that she is secretly in love with her cousin, the profligate charmer José Miguel, who initially is not interested in her. As the plot proceeds José Miguel comes to recognize that he loves Ana Mari, Santi renounces his claim on his niece and all ends well.
This zarzuela contains much folk-music, both real and that composed by Guridi, and much of it is in the quintessential Basque 5/8 rhythms of the 'zortziko' and includes an 'espatadantza' (Basque sword dance). The prelude to Act II is particularly effective containing, as it does, all the work's main themes. There is a particularly affecting aria by Santi, 'Sasibill, mi caserío' ('Sasibill, my homestead') in which he sings of his love for his ancestral home. It is reprised in the finale. Another aria, sometimes excerpted from the opera, is 'Yo no sé que veo en Ana Mari' ('I don't know what I see in Ana Mari') in which José Miguel suddenly recognizes that he is in love with his cousin Ana Mari. Emilio Sánchez, singing José Miguel, has a virile baritonal tenor that is quite effective. Ana Rodrigo's Ana Mari is lyrical and lovely if occasionally strained on top. It is a real pleasure to have the wise portrayal of Santi by one of the long-time mainstays of Spanish opera, baritone Vicente Sardinero, who unfortunately died not long after this recording was made in 2001. The secondary parts are well-taken and the chorus, so important in this zarzuela's folk setting, is the excellent Sociedad Coral de Bilbao. Not enough good can be said for the orchestral accompaniment by the Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao under the flexible conducting of Juan José Mena, who has conducted others in the Naxos series of recordings of Guridi's music.
I can recommend this CD even for someone who has no idea what the music of Guridi might sound like because it is unfailingly melodic, rhythmically alive, full of local color and fine singing. I earlier compared it thematically to 'Die Meistersinger' (there's even a poetry contest -- rather than a singing contest as in 'Meistersinger' but of course the poetry is sung!) but otherwise it is probably closest in its use of folk song and folkways as well as nationalistic fervor to 'The Bartered Bride.' I've been humming bits of it for days.

Martin Phillipps, already on his 8th or 9th or 30th lineup of the Chills, made a near masterpiece with Brave Words. Keyboards, guitars and the New Zealander's reedy voice drive brilliant songs that make something new of concepts like "Rain" and "Ghosts" while also giving forth with deceptively cheery formulations like "Look for the Good in Others and They'll See the Good in You." Phillipps constantly surprises here, putting pressure on his tidily constructed tunes by blurting out dark fantasies about death and romance and the death of romance. The CD adds three bonus tracks. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
brilliant songs, but DON'T BUY THIS.......2006-01-23
It is very hard to screw up a good song, but the production and mix on this record are terrible. It's a real let down after the brilliant Kaleidoscope World album by the Chills (the first one you should buy on CD if you don't already own it).
A few years ago, Martin Phillipps, the head Chill, put out a 3 CD set called "Secret Box" that contained 70 home demos, b sides, live and radio recordings. Most of the songs from Brave Word are on that set, but are mixed, performed and produced a million times better. That set is essential for Kaleidoscope World fans.
From The Chills Website:
I remembered that you had mentioned in interviews that you had wanted to remix it and call it Braver Words.
"The problem with Brave Words is that it was done really, really fast. It was recorded and mixed in about two weeks. Obviously, that's the first album after 7 years, plus that band was about 2 1/2 months old at that stage. In all aspects that record was really done fast. we basically just recorded things as they had been live. Then we went back and sort of went overboard trying to redo some stuff to make it sound as big as we'd been hearing it."
Buy this if you have to, but the Secret Box is the best way to hear these songs.
if only it had a little more punch..........2004-08-03
...i'd give it the full 5 stars. this is the chills' first proper studio album. after touring extensively, going through several line-ups, and releasing a myriad 7"s over the course of 6-7 years, they finally got themselves together for this album. only, compared to their previous vinyl-only offerings--which have since been collected on the excellent kaleidescope world--this falls a little flat. the songs are great, and more immediately accessible than their predecessors, but they were all new to the band, and hadn't been performed at shows previous to the recording of the album. so the record soundss like a band feeling out a batch of new songs, and while many of these tracks would go on to become live staples and fan favorites, here they are like ducklings, waddling around, running into things...but cute all the same.
Best record you've never heard.......2001-11-19
Glorious album of pop and emotion from the best band in the Southern Hemisphere. Not an idle claim as New Zealand has produced a load of great bands that beat Australia by some way. "Night of Chill Blue" is the most tender love song I have ever heard. Martyn Phillips has something to say as a writer without being dogmatic or banal. Sweet without being sickening, singalong without being dumb and upbeat without having a lobotomy. A band that know that there are some things worth celebrating and some things worth reflecting upon. And they were sublime live. Buy!
New Zealand's best-ever band?.......1998-08-19
This album is a fine example of the consistently high-quality music of the Chills, whom I personally rate as New Zealand's best band.Ever. It typifies the 'Dunedin Sound ',originating in the early 80s,and which is (way before the US discovered it) closely akin to much of today's college radio 'alternative' guitar rock. It was so far ahead of its time that only now has can the average US music afficionado truly appreciate it (we connoiseurs have known and recognised their genius for years).

Popular consensus identifies Sebadoh's 1991 release III as among the prolific trio's best. Indeed. At the time of its release, III was a shockingly fresh and innovative descent into lo-fi artistry. Ex-Dinosaur Jr. bass player Lou Barlow, now Sebadoh's lead singer and guitarist, seemed to be asserting that indie-rock bands could, in fact, produce introspective songs about love and relationships while still cranking out moshable jams in black-lit clubs. III's myopic, schizoid personality didn't work for some, since it demonstrated that Barlow and Co. wanted to write songs, not just play rock & roll. But the record foreshadowed a notable rush of sensitive rockers, proving that Sebadoh was well ahead of its time. --Nick Heil
Customer Reviews:
Great Lo-Fi with historic value.......2005-12-31
Along with Pavement's "Slanted & Enchanted", "III" helped Lo-Fi garner respect as a credible subgenre. It's pretty uneven, but overall it's very good. Most of the tracks are more interesting than fun, though (but with 23 tracks that's not a problem). Because of the number of its highlights, as well as its historical importance, I give this 5 stars (but with caution, except for "The Freed Pig" its a very acquired taste and only for fans of the genre). Highly recommended for Lo-Fi fans as well as music collectors and historians.
Highlights include:
"The Freed Pig"
"Total Peace"
"Truly Great Thing"
"Kath"
"Perverted World"
"Wonderful, Wonderful"
"Limb By Limb"
"Rockstar"
"Renaissance Man"
"God Told Me"

don't pay $40 or $30 or $20 for this disc.......2005-11-02
Domino Record Co. (UK) will be reissuing this disc in the very near future for much less than people are trying to sell it here for, and as a reissue, it will likely have a lot of bonus stuff on it. wait to buy this, and get much more for much less.... Great disc, one of Sebadoh's best (but they're all very, very good).
Totally, totally amazing.......2004-06-16
Even though this isn't the first legit album from Sebadoh. It still is the first complete album Lou and co. released. This is just insanity at times. Even though this album is out of print (it has been for a while), copies are still floating around. Even if you have the slightest interest in Sebadoh or Lou Barlow's work, pick this album up. The standout song for me is the closing track "As the world dies, the eyes of god grow bigger" which is a 7 minute scream-fest of disturbing lyrics and vocals that just put everything you believe in down. The lyrics are really hard to get in the song because Lou and Eric are singing different lines at the same time until they just start screaming and wailing. Gaffney is at his best here and it shows so much. But it's not just Gaffney, Lou and Jason also contribute the best that they would ever make on this album.
Either way, get this album if you can, you WON'T be dissapointed at all.
My Favorite Sebadoh Album.......2004-06-10
I LOVE this album. I have all sebadoh's albums except for freed weed (yeah i know, ill order it right now) and this seems to be the one i listen to and enjoy the most. It is a very consistent album and it is eric's best. I love all sebadoh albums, but this is their greatest.
Sebadoh-III.......2003-03-23
Sebadoh III is one of the top ten unknown albums of all time. It moves along with ease considering it has 20+ songs. Listening with earphones is suggested as Barlow and Lowenstein set there own tones through the hard to the soft. Songs such as "Kath", "Perverted World", "G-d told me" and the epic "As the world dies" are great moments in Sebadohs III and I feel myself listening to III over and over. As Lou Barlow once said, "The music is written so that words can be heard." Great match!

beautifully composed.. it has changed my life forever.......2000-06-04

A Great Disc from the original band.......1999-09-17
If you want to hear the Supreme Dicks before they morphed into their current incarnation, The Superdicks, then this is the disc. This disc captures the old lineup in all of their glory, before the infighting compromised the band. The Kapelovitz led Superdicks do have some of the main members of the old band, but they lack the onstage fury of Jim Spring and the grace of Steve Shavell's slide guitar. Luckilly the Superdicks have yet to record and will not compete with the majesty of the Supreme Dicks recorded output.
Good, but Kapelovitz absence noticable.......1999-08-02
Once again, more velvety space noise from the dicks. Unfortunately, the absence of supreme supreme dick, Dan Kapelovitz, is noticable. despite this, it is still a good record. vive le dicks!
Very Cool........1999-03-09
Once again the Dicks veer perilously close to disaster only to right their ship at the last minute, creating something beautiful and true in the process. Their best disc? Maybe not, but certainly better than anything else this side of oblivion.
GREAT CD!.......1998-08-24
This is the cd we've all been waiting for. This disc crushes everything that's come before it. It reduces the sum of human conciousness to 68 blissful minutes. There is no need to listen to anything else. Brilliant!

Brooklyn's Smack Dab's Second Album is Beautiful.......2004-06-14
I love this album.
It has a psychodelic 60's feel to it.
The songs are thoughtful and full of youth and wisdom.
This is their second album, there was a third album recorded by them that never came out.
This quirky trio is extreemly well produced by the talents of J.Z. Barrell .
I can't say that it is perfect album, but Ten years after it's release "Majestic Root"has grown into a giant tree, although lost in a forest .
All 16 songs are peices of a puzzle ,they all bring you by the hand down a road ,on a journey.
Linda Hagood is the guitarist splashing her pure yet nieve color into every song!
And on Bass guitar is Alec Steven of Rail Road Jerk fame keeping this gem rooted in deep musicality.
The first Smack Dab album "Queen Crab",featured Wm.Berger of Uncle Wiggly on drums. This one the drums are well done too by producer J.Z. Barrell.
You will hear a Cello in the song "Pengelum"It is a soothing song.Another Favorite of mine from this is "Digging My Feet in the Ground"
"Hazel" Is a good example of there quirky romanticism.
These songs are all photographs of a band in New York City in their mid 30's doing it as best they can,Actualy southern accented Linda Hagood is from Virginia ,she later played with the band' Double You '
Hopefully that unreleased third album will come out sometime soon.It features Jeff Jenson on bass and some vocals and IS EVEN BETTER THAN THIS ONE! and this one is truly Psychodelic and sweet- hearted Rock and Roll.

This CD expansion of a compilation of early singles and EP cuts by New Zealand's best known alt-pop band has a couple of flat spots. But both the 18- track length and the generally robust health of Martin Phillipps' songwriting make it a generous offer that's hard to refuse. Phillipps was actually to do more consistent work on Brave Words and Submarine Bells, but Kaleidoscope World finds him working out early versions of his continuing obsessions--death, the environment--in a fascinating manner. It also includes one of his all-time greats, "I Love My Leather Jacket," a gorgeous rocker about the premature loss of a friend. --Rickey Wright
Album Description
Kaleidoscope World is the Chills' essential document, a collection of tracks from early and mid-'80s EPs, singles, and compilation cuts. The influence of Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd is stronger on these early tracks than it would be on subsequent releases, both on the easygoing sing along numbers and the more experimental outings. The highlight (of both the album and the Chills' career) is their New Zealand hit single, the haunting 'Pink Frost'.

sheer brilliance.......2007-04-06
I love a lot of Kiwi alt rock bands, and while the Chills may not be my favorites (that would have to be the wonderful band The Clean), this is, nevertheless, a wonderful, brilliant record. Filled with quirky details and loaded with lo-fi charm and appeal, this is what great rock music sounds like, and it's the best recording by this talented band (it's actually a compilation of different EPs). It also has one of the catchiest pop-rock songs ever written, the amazing I Love My Leather Jacket.
I only wish Kaleidoscope World were still available for purchase. I also wish the Chills would consider a U.S. tour, but alas, they seem content to stick around their home country and to play only the occasional show.
First Rate Jangle Pop.......2004-11-25
As stated earlier this is a collection of The Chills early 7" singles and The Lost EP. Incredibly catchy classic Flying Nun pop at it's best. You'll be humming these songs all day, they're very infectious. If you like this also have a look around for the Brave Words LP which followed the release of these singles and EP. It's a
another piece of fine Flying Nun pop from the label's golden years (early to mid 80's.)
some of the best pop the kiwis have to offer.......2004-08-04
this here is a collection of the chills' early singles, etc. and it's probably, speaking critically, the best thing they've put out. not all, but most of their "classics" are here, including the legendary "pink frost" and "i love my leather jacket." the thing i like most about this album is the feeling of being totally immersed in kiwi pop culture. of all the kiwi pop albums i've heard since spring (and that's quite a lot), this one sounds the most authentic. people always say that something they love is "transporting", but they rarely mean it. well, i'm going to say it AND mean it, right here: the chills' _kaleidoscope world_ is...transporting.
Album of the Year at the 1997 Lincoln Howard Music Awards!.......1998-11-03
I'm still amazed at the quality of this album. It doesn't have one of two fabulous songs, it has about five or six. Not to leave out the rest of the album, because the whole thing is great, but the songs I would single out as being among the best ever recorded would be: Satin Doll, Pink Frost, I Don't Even Know Her Name, and Doledrums. A few others follow closely behind. And I would like to go on record by saying the end of "Doledrums" is the best part of any song I've ever heard in my life. How Martin Phillipps put that one together I'll never know, but spending the $14-15 dollars or so is worth it just to hear the end of that song. Well worth your money if you like melodic music that paints a picture of the macabre in a lot of the songs. Dig it...
