Product Description
After leaving Slobberbone, guitarist Michael Hill formulated 12lb.Test in 1997 as an outlet for performing his own songs. The Denton, TX-based band (Hill, bassist Michael Alves, guitarist Jake Williams and drummer Steve Hill) creates music that combines the roar of rock ‘n' roll with melodic twang. Harm's Way reels in catchy roots pop (“When We Didn't Know”), Steve Earle-like rockers (“The Great Unknown”) and even an exquisitely desperate plea for forgiveness (“Peace Offering”). With Hill's passionately sung lyrics, the dual guitar fireworks and a deep-rooted sense for hooks, 12lb Test's sparkling debut makes for a bountiful haul of Texas-bred alt-country rock.

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

This is a good collection of music from war movies. "Where Eagles Dare" and "Battle OF Miday" are fantastic. This CD sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars "First of Eight installments of Great Movies Themes...Silva".......2002-01-23

An extremely worthwhile and entertaining compilation for all "film-score-buffs" to sink their teeth into---this release "WAR", is the first installment of eight releases from Silva Treasury
featuring "Great Movie Themes In Dolby Surround"---is this one ever a sure-fire WINNER?---it most certainly is!

Silva has the knack to record and share "hard-to-find" scores with it fans---let's take a quick look at the film, year and composers ~ "SINK THE BISMARCK"(1960-Clifton Parker)..."THE GUNS OF NAVARONE"(1962-Dimitri Tiomkin)..."THE LONGEST DAY"(1962-Paul Anka/Maurice Jarre)..."633 SQUADRON"(1964-Ron Goodwin)..."BATTLE OF THE BULGE"(1965-Benjamin Frankel)..."IN HARMS WAY"(1965-Jerry Goldsmith)..."Is Paris Burning?"(1965-Maurice Jarre)..."THE NIGHT
OF THE GENERALS"(1967-Maurice Jarre)..."THE BRIDGE AT REMAGEN" (1968-Elmer Bernstein)..."WHERE EAGLES DARE"(1969-Ron Goodwin) ..."PATTON"(1969-Jerry Goldsmith)"MACARTHUR"(1977-Jerry Goldsmith )..."THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY"(1976-John Williams)..."DAS BOOT(THE
BOAT)"(1981-Klaus Doldinger)..."CASUALTIES OF WAR"(1989-Ennio
Morricone)...there they all are, some available elsewhere and many never before seen the light of day...many of the performances here are better than the original...significant arrangements with outstanding orchestration, full orchestra with a Big Concert Sound quality.

Silva Screen takes listening pleasure to another level with THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, under the baton of Paul Bateman and Derek Wadsworth, Mark Ayres performance on "DAS BOOT", rhythm flows mixing well with surround sound---must make mention of the various MAIN TITLES...PRELUDES...SUITES...MARCHES, are nothing less than magnificent with percussion abounding, strings sweeping, brass accentuates the counter-melodies within epic proportions...all this Great Movie Themes extravaganza in DOLBY SURROUND, gotta love it!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-05-26

Great soundtrack. I haven't tried it on surround sound yet, but it sounds great on my car's CD player. The tracts from "Where Eagle's Dare," "The Battle of the Bulge," and "633 Squadron" are just superb---but the whole CD is really well done.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ArrangemenT & Recording.......2000-04-21

I bought this CD for one theme only, "Where Eagles Dare". It is one of the most stirring, spine tingling recordings I have heard. I play it in the mornings to get me started and it wakes up every nerve cell. The recording quality and muscianship are excellent. And, the bass intensity and dynamic range are mind-blowing. You could blow your speakers if not careful. All the selections are good. I recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A good compilation of War themes........1999-10-26

This cd contains a good mixture of re-recorded themes. While I have not listed to this on a surround system, the orchestra still sounds great throughout the 54 minute recording. My favorite selection on this CD is Rod Goodwin's 633 Squadron.

      Album Description

After leaving Slobberbone, guitarist Michael Hill formulated 12lb.Test in 1997 as an outlet for performing his own songs. The Denton, TX-based band (Hill, bassist Michael Alves, guitarist Jake Williams and drummer Steve Hill) creates music that combines the roar of rock `n' roll with melodic twang.
