No Depression
First up is Golden Delicious ... [w]ith their frenetic amalgamation of bluegrass, they reinvent traditional numbers and craft original tunes that stand on their own. The second half of the disc is an abrupt shift to the solo Krebs material. The tempo slows considerably on four original songs that are decidedly quieter and more heartfelt.

Option
If you don't count the throwaway second track, you end up with four group tunes in an upbeat traditional style, with a hint of an electric edge. Krebs complements these tunes with four thoughtful songs sung with a strong edge and a hard-strummed acoustic guitar.

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-04-17

This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-03-13

i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05

This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.

5 out of 5 stars Three Cheers.......2006-07-16

Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

5 out of 5 stars Smith's Genius.......2006-07-09

Elliot Smith has never written anything but beautiful, listenable music and this first release is no exception. His fan base should only grow. He was a genius.

4 out of 5 stars The Helio Sequence - 'Com Plex' (Cavity Search).......2004-10-25

Nine tunes of semi-innocent sounding space pop that has nothing to prove whatsoever.Hailing from Porland,OR,believe it or not, this is a duo.Brandon Summers is on guitar and vocals and Ben Weikel is on keyboards and drums.I happen to notice sort of a Beatles/Cheap Trick like melody here.Best tracks are "Just Married Jane",the spell-binding "My Heart",the soaring "Sassafras",their glossy cover of the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows"(now, that's class-the way they do it anyway),"Big Jet Sky" and "Demographics".Okay,I confess.'Com Plex' is better than what I had expected. Was recorded in a one-room music store of the two musician's day job.I've caught these guys playing live and if you get the chance to do so yourself, take my advise:bring earplugs. They can probably up and quit their day job now.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Sounds.......2002-12-31

There's a mixture of fluid and static music in this record that makes it a bizarre cross between Kraftwerk and King Black Acid. Most people don't know who KBA is so instead we'll call it a mixture between Kraftwerk and early Pink Floyd. Throw into that bit of late-Beatles and Blurish Brit-pop. There's a soft electonica underbelly to Helio Sequence which heard by itself is almost trancy. On top of it is wet delay-ridden guitars soaring toward spacerock. Its innovative and gets better with every listen. Its power is in the music and instrumental jams/solos. The songs are not particularly catchy and lack strong hooks -- in other words after listening to the album no songs get stuck in my head. But it is also complex and textured which makes each listening a fresh experience. The album feels a bit restrained as if the musicians are unable or unwilling to let loose or perhaps that they are slaves to their electronica fundament. Check out track #3. That's about as poppy as they get.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!.......2002-05-01

I started sending out my bands demo a couple days before I got this album in the mail. It's intimidating to hear a couple of new guys that recorded at the house (much like I have) and they sound this good. I can't believe they're not bigger than they are. It's not just [good] music, its deep, highly creative, and catchy as hell. Some bands do something and you say "Wow, I know where your coming from!!" But with these guys your saying "Wow, I wish I knew where you were coming from!!" I bought this album because of the MBV comparisons, and I kept hearing the beatles mentioned and you do kind of get the sense of Kevin Shields doing Sgt. Peppers, but this album is by no means a rehash of anything I've ever heard. I gotta check out their next release!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2001-09-13

Two kids perform and record an entire album and put together nine tunes worthy of heavy airplay. This is a truly professional-sounding production with catchy tunes and psychedelic, deep music. The comparison to the Beatles is natural, especially since they do a respectable cover. Very English-sounding.
I'm still amazed at how little-known this record is (but is probably understandable with the small label and little publicity). I expect we will be hearing much more from them, on a bigger label with an even more impressive mastering of their next album. Take this CD to your friends' next party and watch them as they listen to Com Plex. Pity it isn't available on vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2001-05-03

This is undoubtedly the best album I've purchased this year. If you like Mercury Rev, this one is better. It's more creative, more energetic, more out there. It has just the right mix of lyrical melody and drugged-out oddity. All I can say is I hope they're putting out more some time soon.

2 out of 5 stars Goidbye, album.......2006-03-31

I'm listening to this album right now. It's alright. Very
noisy, trippy, indie..... This reminds me of a more industrial
experimental psychedelic ween. You be the judge on that. I
only thought,"[Square] bubbles," was really good. Plus track 9 is O.K. Songs range 5-6 minutes. Instrumental opening. Spacey
synth. Dreamy occasionaly, like track 1 and, " take take
take."

5 out of 5 stars underrated band.......2005-09-16

A friend of mine played The Helio Sequence for me and since then I haven't been able to get over them. This band is simply amazing, and they get better with every listen. These guys are musical mad scientists. The music is complex and demands you attention. And every time you listen you learn something new from it. This album is light years better than anything I've heard from indie-sensations Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, The Shins...

This band deserves attention, they're awesome.

4 out of 5 stars An improvement.......2003-12-27

I've had these two young men's first disk since around when it came out and have waited for a new disk in the hopes that they would add more vocals and cut back on the lengthly 7 minute songs. My wish came true. The men are studio genius, they make some of the most wonderful loops in recent memory. I would suggest this disk to anyone who likes involving, spirling songs.

2 out of 5 stars 16-layer dip too filling.......2003-04-29

I saw these guys at SxSW and was amazed at the amount of sound and energy they were able to generate for just two guys. I was impressed enough to pick up a copy of the CD at the show based largely on the song 'Cut the Camera' which is also the best song on the CD. Unfortunately, many of the songs get lost in a wash of synth-loops and other effects in a man v. machine struggle for control. The potential is certainly there once they gain enough confidence in their vocals and songwriting to let the songs and melodies breath a little more. Will they be given a chance?

5 out of 5 stars 2 guys, 10 songs, one great album.......2003-03-04

Whatever happened to cause the Helio Sequence to spawn this album must have been some ordeal. Every song deals with corporate masquerading, the drudgery of the daily grind and 70-hour work weeks with potently venomous lyrics. The fact that the social criticism is coupled with some of the most beautiful and densely layered pop music is the real accomplishment.

All of the songs float above your head with multiple melodies from bouncing bass, wailing guitars and synth squiggles, all of which combine to comprise a lush tapestry of sound.

"Echo Blomp" sounds like it is being rained down from Heaven's P.A. system while "Kablerium vs. Obliviousity" is a racing six minutes that could energize a corpse. My personal favorite is "Take Take Take," which is nearly two songs. The first 4 minutes is a cheary dirge that sounds like a spring meadow looks and the final 3:30 or so is a heartbreaking symphony done on synthesizer.

One magazine successfully described this album as a cross between the Beach Boys and British shoegazers like Spacemen 3, early Lush and My Bloody Valentine. If that sounds good to you, then there is no way you'll be disappointed by this album. Unconditionally recommended.

Uncle Tupelo provided a blueprint for "alternative country" in 1990 with the release of their debut, No Depression, a whirlwind of dynamic, passionate punk rock and rootsy country and folk. In the years since that pivotal record, alternative country has basically been transformed into a version of country rock that would make the Eagles proud. Portland, Oregon's Richmond Fontaine, however, have chosen to stay true to Uncle Tupelo's vision. Lost Son burns bright, fueled by equal doses of high-octane punk and hard-luck country moonshine. It is at turns wistful, ferocious, sweet, discordant, and occasionally disturbing in both its lyrics and songs. Lead singer and guitarist Willie Vlauten spins tales as dark and twisted as the roots of an ancient Douglas fir and his Northwest vision of Americana is inspired as much by his surroundings as his musical influences, though you're never quite sure who the protagonists are in his aching, twangy narratives. Songs reach towering peaks of cascading, over-driven guitar chords and pounding drums, only to slip seamlessly into lush valleys of acoustic strumming and sylvan slide guitar. Though definitely more rock than country, Lost Son nonetheless embodies all the best qualities of both and delivers them with an undeniable passion that references Tupelo's No Depression yet is entirely unique. --Adem Tepedelen

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. A definite grower but the later albums are better.......2005-07-20

This is the album that got me interested in Richmond Fontaine, and almost put me off them too.

The first thing that strikes me is that the poor man's Uncle Tupelo comparisons seem right but only about this album (maybe earlier ones - but I haven't heard them). Lost Son does sound a lot like No Depression or rather like someone doing their version of No Depression and although they don't do a bad job they aren't as good.

Initially I was not impressed I am not really a big fan of No Depression although I like the less punky Uncle Tupelo stuff. Much of this album has heavy slashing guitars and I am not a fan of this in alt-country music.

However the lyrics really do stick in the head and transport you to the dark, bleak places where the characters exist. The stories often leave blanks and you can't help but imagine what had gone on before the song or after it. Willy Vlautin's voice is not the strongest and that is no bad thing. You can't imagine a better voice singing these songs.

Something about the songs brought me back to them and eventually the songs started to grow on me. The melodies which had been hidden amongst the heavy guitars started to reveal themselves and before long I quite enjoyed the album.

It will never be my favourite Richmond Fontaine album and just as I got into tracks such as Cascades, Fifteen year old kid............., and Pinkerton I went out and bought the truly wonderful Winnemucca and Lost Son sadly took a back seat but because of it introducing me to Richmond Fontaine it will always have a place in my heart.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the derivative Tupelo comparisons.......2000-03-10

This lyrics and music on this brilliant recording aptly capture the (admittedly darker) essence of the Pacific Northwest. Yes, Willy writes dark material that is often compared to Raymond Carver - the images are incredibly powerful and will not quickly pass from your memory. The inevitable comparisons to Tupelo are due to the unbelievable similarity of Willy's voice to Jay Farrar's - that, and the fine pedal steel contributions by Paul Brainard. The truth is that Willy was more influenced by the early LA cowpunk scene, including bands such as X and the Blasters, Dave Alvin, etc. Some people hear a resemblence to Lou Reed and Velvet Underground - whatever. The truth is, if you are a fan of early Tupelo you will probably identify with and truly enjoy what Richmond Fontaine has to offer. Personally, I was a huge fan of the early Tupelo and felt a certain loss as they slowly whittled away more of the punk elements from their music. I have great respect for Jay Farrar, but Son Volt needs to do something about the roots-rock rut they have seized upon - they are beginning to sound like a broken record. In my humble opinion, Richmond Fontaine restores the power and energy (at times, the fury) of this genre without being at all derivative. The songwriting is entirely original - take one listen to "Cascades" or "Fifteen year-old kid in Nogales, Mexico" (or any of them for that matter). The music will pull you in and the story will guarantee that you are hooked. Considering the dearth of live music here in Leadville, listening to Lost Son always makes me homesick for Oregon and the wonderful music scene that Portland holds. Pick up a copy and check it out.

3 out of 5 stars Dark, dark, dark.......2000-02-25

Richmond Fontane very much sounds like early, No Depression-era Uncle Tupelo, attempting the folk at-times, punk at-times balance that was UT's trademark. In fact, lead singer Willie Vlauten's voice sounds so much like Jay Ferrar's raw, untrained voice on "No Depression" that it's eerie.

While "Lost Son" does not approach any of UT's albums in quality, it surpasses UT in the darkness of the lyrics and the stark contrasts in the musical styles on the album. The lyrics tell vivid stories of death, deceit, murder, prostitution, muggings, alcoholism (you know, all the great things in life.) These bleak stories are centered around rural life in the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. They are vivid enough that I found myself thinking about the hapless characters in the songs hours after I finished listening to the album. The music ranges from EXTREMELY loud punk with a rusty rural sound to slow, lilting acoustic chords that you can fall asleep to. Richmond Fontane even runs this range of styles in one song!

Bottom line is, this album will probably be more interesting to you if you are a fan of Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression" and "Still Feel Gone" albums. "Lost Son" is a new interpretation of those classic albums. I wouldn't recommend buying this album if you aren't familiar with those two albums; it is a very dark and moody album with a musical style that is unique to them and Uncle Tupelo. Go buy "No Depression" and/or "Still Feel Gone", and if you like those albums, keep Richmond Fontane's "Lost Son" in mind.

4 out of 5 stars King Black Acid - 'Royal Subjects' (Cavity Search).......2006-08-20

Looks to be the Portland band's second effort.I think I like this release as much as I did their 'Womb Star Sessions' CD(see my review).Simply more of KBA'S trademark 'inventive space rock' they seemed have semi-mastered.Best cuts here are "60 Cycles Numb","Call Me On The Headphones" and the fifteen-minute epic title track "Royal Subjects".Could swear I heard a didgeridoo and a violin in there. If you dig this genre, you might want to hunt down a copy of this disc.Worth many repeated plays.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......1999-09-23

It's an amazing cd, in fact all of them are. It's like getting high without taking drugs like good music should be. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars King Black Acid....Smooth and Tight.......1998-08-06

I was first introduced to the melodious sounds of King Black Acid while visiting Portland, Oregon in 1997....I had strolled into a small record shop to browse the local band albums, asking the shop owner for something in the way of harmonious, selflessly indulgent phsycadelia and he handed me this album...Listening to the first song, I must say, almost turned me off, but after listening to the rest of it in one sitting, I was hooked...beautifully lyrical, instumentaly persuasive and inert, this album deserves an audience...The highlights, the sweetly rendered "Only Wine Will tell", and the kinetic "14,000 Member Acid Army", will pull you in straight away...buy it...you won't be disappointed...and strap on those big puffy headphones, light a candle, close your eyes and listen to sounds of a bright and wonderful album.
