Amazon.com's Best of 2001

David Ball's 1988 debut was sweet and melodic, complete with yodeling and a beguiling, light-on-its-feet traditionalism. Following his 1994 Top 10 single, "Thinkin' Problem," he wound up lost in the hat-act shuffle, which, had he stuck with it, would probably have destroyed his integrity as it had that of so many others. Amigo returns Ball to his Southwestern roots. The title song, which he co-penned with Kostas, has a '40s feeling that sets the tone for the entire record. Other Ball-authored material is just as fine, particularly "Missing Her Blues," the yodelfest "Texas Echo," and the gutsy gospel of "When the Devil Wants to Wrestle." Ball also includes a masterful interpretation of Merle Haggard's loungy "Trying Not to Love You" and demonstrates his flawless taste in vintage material, recasting the 1920s pop hit "Linger Awhile" as fetching, acoustic-driven Western swing and the classic "Just Out of Reach" as a waltz. He may not be swimming in gold and platinum discs nowadays, but with a package this artistically satisfying under his belt, who cares? --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-01-05

This is a very good collection of music. My dad loves the corvette song. He misplaced his copy and I had to replace it for him. Its the only CD that he listens to in his car.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Like.......2006-03-12

I don't buy a lot of music anymore - Johnny Cash and the Oakridge Boys were my kind of country. I heard "Riding.." on my way to Tennessee so with an old vette in my past and my second son with a LAR Marine unit in Iraq it touched me deeply. Strangely enough I like almost all the other songs too. Amazon is great, as always. I'm one of those 10% that don't live within 15 miles of a WalMart so it was the only place to shop.

4 out of 5 stars A friendly sort of albums, full of tales .......2004-12-14

Somewhere along the way I started listening to the so-called "alt-county" and to a number of Texas-based artists. David Ball, while not really in the alternative category, is another one of those distinctive voices from Texas who deserves a close listen because he not only has a parcel of talent as a singer and musician but also understands and studies tradition and form.

Mr. Ball, a vocalist who does not aspire to be another Nashville hair-hat clone, belts our some great stuff on "Amigo." He is smooth without being trendy and tells some great stories without resorting to gimmicks. The band performs flawlessly, whether adding a pedal steel flourish, a touch of Mariachi horns, or some honky-tonk piano.

"Amigo" is indeed a friendly sort of albums, full of tales of drinking, lost love, soul searching, soldiers, and other themes that resonant from the heartland. There is nothing harsh here but rather a collection of tunes that require a bit of volume and possibly some toe-tapping. And what a collection of songs---a dash of everything from ballads to swing, to the type of real country that floated across the AM radio back in the '60s.

This music is fun to play for your friends who don't like---or claim not to like---any country music in any form. If you can hijack the car stereo on a road trip and calm them down enough so they actually listen, they might just like it, too.

(I guess because it's such a big place that Texas can conjure up folks as different as the 13th Floor Elevator, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Gourds, Lyle Lovett, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ZZ Top, MojoLingo, Breedlove, and Asleep at the Wheel, and still have room for David Ball.)

5 out of 5 stars more than 5 stars.......2003-12-21

If you are looking for something towards the more traditional county, then this is for you. Really not twangy, but just a pure county. I only checked out David Ball after his "Private Andrwe Malone" song. But I really go for a traditional county flair. But after listening to the rest of the Cd I saw that it was just what I was looking for. A more traditional county style. Actually after listening to this CD I went further and checked out his previous CD's and they are along the same, traditional county and please get them. I hope he does have another CD come out cause I am waiting.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Traditional Country cd.......2003-10-11

A friend of mine suggested that I get this cd. She said it was awesome, so I thought I'd give it a try. I am definately happy I got this cd! It is wonderful! It's nothing but straight, pure Country traditionalism. It isn't contemporary in the least, but rather old-fashioned country in the style of the 1940s and 1950s. Some material is original, such as the deeply touching "Riding With Private Malone", and some are covers, such as a remake of Merle Haggard's "Trying Not To Love You". There are different styles, as well. Styles range from Western Swing in the beautiful "Linger Awhile" and "Swing Baby" to Southwestern in the songs "She Always Talked About Mexico", "Missing her Blues", and the title cut "Amigo". If you are tired of all the generic cross-over material found on much of the radio today, then look no further than here. This is so pure most programmers won't even know what it is. This is a wonderful album, and I recommend this for all music fans.

5 out of 5 stars Savall family extravaganza.......2006-01-27

Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras are the two giants in the Catalan early music scene. On this album they enlist the help of percussionist Pedro Estevan and their two children to produce some truly exceptional music. Jordi Savall, the most famous family member, almost fades into the background, although he is obviously the rock that anchors the album. His playing is superb, and it seems as though it was most likely him who chose the excellent repertoire. Figueras, like wine, is only improving with age. Also like wine, however, she's a bit of an acquired taste; I am a huge fan of straight tone singing and even I took a while to get used to her bizarre, raw sound. It's worth it, however, as she is one of the most intriguing singers of this era.

Daughter Arianna is a world-class artist in her own right. Like her father, she is multi-talented; she sings, plays the harp, and composes (her contribution to this album, "La Salve," is beautiful and affecting, but some of the selections on her own solo album "Bella Terra" are far superior). Like her mother, her voice is haunting and beautiful, more polished than the elder woman but slightly less interesting. She sounds particularly lovely in the background of the first track. Ferran Savall also lends his voice to the album, although his singing is far less classical sounding, which may be a plus to some listeners. "Noumi, Noumi, Yaladatii," which Figueras has previously recorded as a solo, includes a vocalise from Ferran astonishing in its power, although his one solo on this album, "La Canco Del Lladre," is the least impressive track, as his voice can be irritating after a while and the song itself is repetitive and overlong.

The instrumental tracks are universally excellent. Jordi Savall is one of the world's best viola da gamba players and this album proves that he is still at the top of his game. Arianna's virtuosic harp solo is one of the album's highlights; her playing is less restrained and more visceral than most harpists. Pedro Estevan seems to have very little to do, but a little goes a long way with this music.

I sincerely hope that this will not be the last album to feature the Savall-Figueras family together. These five musicians have produced an album of surreal beauty, not to be missed.

Album Description

"Amigo" was recorded in North Hollywood in July of 1976. Amigo was the name of the recording studio and the record was named to honor the great musicians and talented crew who worked on the project. Arlo and family along with producer John Pilla moved into a house nearby and spent about 2 months recording and mixing the tracks. It was a very happy time, as Annie, Arlo & Jackie's third child was born during the recording. Arlo, John and co-producer, Lenny Waronker had worked together on all the recordings starting with "Running Down The Road" each record improving and evolving - With "Amigo" they really hit their stride.

Great musicians, great engineering, great songs, all converging at a good and happy time make this recording what it is.

5 out of 5 stars The indications of growth are there..........2005-10-12

...in his earlier '70s albums, but with Amigo, Arlo Guthrie entered the songwriting pantheon with the big boys. His songs here are as good as anything his big influence, Bob Dylan, had written up to that point (listen to "Victor Jara" and tell me that it's not better than Dylan's "Hurricane" from the same time period), his political sensibilities would have made his father proud, his sense of humor is still delightfully intact and his choice of cover tunes shows some real imagination.

Hard to say which songs I like best here--"Guabi Guabi" is unbelievably stupid but I love it! "Darkest Hour," "Massachusetts," "Ocean Crossing" and "Grocery Blues" are all wonderful. So too, is his cover of the Rolling Stones' "Connection," with Linda Ronstadt singing background on it.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Album.......2005-10-03

I found this album at the Roseville Library (MN) in the mid 80's and found it to be a quite remarkable creation of true excellence in terms of creativity, depth of feeling, thoughtfulness and content. There are fun songs (Guabi Guabi), and some very poignant moments, especially the sequence from Darkest HOur to Patriot's Dream. Lyrics are great throughout... but this album has that "something more" that elevates it. Don't know why it's so overlooked and forgoten. It deserves a very high place in the panoply of music for/from our generation. (Disclaimer: I am from the Boomer gen)

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD. .......2005-08-25

Many 60s-refugee types (such as myself) may not be aware of the heartfelt, progressive folk music recorded by Guthrie after Alice's Restaurant. More's the pity. The songs on Amigo demonstrate a humanity sorely needed in 2005.

5 out of 5 stars A master class from a virtuoso.......2005-08-26

This 2005 release was my 1st and belated musical encounter with Vicente Amigo. What comes to mind is what Segovia proclaimed of Williams, "a prince of the [flamenco] guitar has arrived [where Paco de Lucía has reigned]." Amigo's music in this CD is electrifying, complex, and sublimely lyrical, while his guitar technique defies human limits--a smorgasbord of new falsetas, rich counterbeats, picado, alzapúa... Flawless rasgueados in crescendo suddenly awaken you like you just had a double shot of espresso, only to find yourself soothed by hypnotizing arpeggios in the next few measures. There is an interesting fusion of sounds at times--drums in Track 1, and bandoneón in several others. You will need to be in an occasional contemplative mood to appreciate Track 9. Track 5 and especially its bonus version Track 10 can be used to unwind while you sip down on Tempranillo.

5 out of 5 stars Remastering the "Corrido de Caballos Famosos"!.......2000-04-29

Vicente Fernandez must have known that he took a big risk when he recorded this album. Afterall, he had to compare his renditions of those famous ballads with the renditions of Jose Alfredo Jimenez (El Caballo Blanco), Miguel Aceves Mejia (El Potro Lobo Gateado), Gilberto Valenzuela (El Moro de Cumpas), and Antonio Aguilar (his version of virtually every song on this album). Thank God Vicente Fernandez took the risk because this album redefined and remastered those classic ballads. Vicente Fernandez's voice and the fresh orchestrations make this album a classic and one of Fernandez's finest works of art.

After years of performing and releasing albums overseas, acclaimed modern flamenco guitarist Vicente Amigo achieves stateside recognition with his release Ciudad de las Ideas. While he is accomplished on the fretboard, Amigo takes a decidedly low-key approach on tracks like "Tres Notas Para Decir te Quiero" (with its soothing falsetto singing) and the solo guitar piece "Bolero de Vicente." Through his style, Amigo is able to flesh out his songs with controlled doses of requisite guitar pyrotechnics. (The syrupy strings and mellow guitar of the title track, however, evoke easy listening.) Not everything here is laid back. Two of the songs--the dramatic "Cordoba" (solea) and the initially languid "La Tarde as Caramelo" (alegrias)--build to dramatic crescendos, while "Tata," the album's most energetic cut, features lively brass and bass and a catchy one-word chorus. There's a smoldering romanticism displayed on Ciudad de las Ideas, and the talented Amigo proves he is in command of mood and tone throughout. --Bryan Reesman

relative to his fist cd 'de mi corazan al aire' this is not in the same sublime light; but this is very good music non the less. it lack the original spontaneous sound that i know he is capable of, of which there are wispy hints. its as if he is trying to play, instead of letting it FLOW; a delicate art. i hope he returnith to the melodic spontaneous sound that places him right at the top of his art in a realm of his own. my star rating is more based on his own potential rather than comparing it to that of other artists.

5 out of 5 stars simply great !.......2006-03-17

This is music to listen to over and over, enjoying the passion, the inspired vocals, and the beauty of the melodies, Simply great guitar work here. I'm a world music fan and don't have background in flamenco. I was first exposed to the artist through music video on the WorldLink satellite channel. I think that two of the works on this album made it to video stage. Now I'm buying all of Vicente's CDs, and enjoy them all. The CD notes and lovely poetry here make it clear that the aritist felt something special with this music, and I feel it too. I can't count how many times I've listened to this. Bonus - this is very calming during intense traffic...its "medicine".

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Soulful.......2005-05-23

Vicente Amigo really gets the job done here. Technically unbelievable, solid compas, intruiging. My son and I were admiring the tune Tata, it is as close to heavy metal as flamenco can go. With the interplay of palmas, guitar and cante, WOW! If you like Paco, you will like this albumn - no, check that, you will love it!

    2 out of 5 stars Corny.......2005-05-17

I own several flamenco CDs, and "Ciudad de las Ideas" has to be the one I listen to the least. "La Tarde es Caramelo" and "Ojos de la Alhambra" are the only songs on this CD worth listening to. The rest of this CD is painfully corny and boring-- especially the first track, the last track, and the title track. I like Vicente Amigo, but this is his worst album. Most of the songs just don't have the hearty essence of real flamenco. For some good, innovative flamenco, I highly recommend the music of Gerardo Nunez and the albums "Jucal", "Calima", "Andando el Tiempo", and "La Nueva Escuela de la Guitarra Flamenca."

5 out of 5 stars For all the Don Juans !.......2004-11-02

Wow, this album really transcends me into some other euphorical world. 'Tres notas para decir te quier' reminds me of someone really special to me, such beautiful melody. Other more somber pieces like the title track showcase this man's immense ability with his guitar. Really, this album has moved me to tears on occassions. I am deeply touched, and humbled by the work of this artist, who feels the soul of his instument, and inspires with his music....

This record will transport you into a different world of sound and spirit: simpler, purer, more tranquil and serene. The program consists of chants from the 12th to the 15th centuries and includes several Sephardic songs--some quite dancelike, some rather mournful. Though the melodic range of the chants is naturally very limited, and the prevailing mood is devotional and somber, they have a lot of textural diversity. Some are purely instrumental, others are for one or two unaccompanied voices. When the tenor and bass sing alone, the latter provides a drone to the former's more florid line, or they move in open intervals, alternating between unison and solo. Their duets with the soprano combine unison, conversational give and take, and counterpoint. Most of the chants use a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations, with fascinating results. The final song employs the entire group; vigorous, assertive, and celebratory, it keeps adding voices and instruments, becoming increasingly elaborate.

The performing group is most admirable. Several singers also play numerous instruments, which include a citole, a cornemuse, a hackbrett simulating a psalterion, a Persian def, and a Syrian rek, in addition to the more familiar vieles and a large variety of flutes and percussion. Among the singers, tenor Hervé Lamy is outstanding. His voice is sweet and velvety, his expressiveness both chaste and intense.

The disc's packaging is odd. The booklet gives neither the texts nor any information about the music or the performers. But both the makers of the instruments, which are, of course, modern reproductions of the ancient originals, and the dates when they were made are listed in meticulous detail. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars down Argentine way.......2004-02-18

Please, some record executive, provide liner notes! I speak "un poquito" Spanish but even liner notes would be greatly appreciated. I do know Silvetti is an Argentine artist who is well regarded for his piano art and that he also composes. Composes not only classical pieces but pop music. Here you'll find one majestic classic style piece but mainly it's Discoteque and pieces very reminicient of Burt Bacharach's music. And that's good 'cause Bacharach is marvelous, most lyrics are sung in English! Disco fans will be ready to put on their boots and white leisure suits and I think Silvetti wrote the scores for America's tv soap operas like DALLAS. Surprising and quite novel.

5 out of 5 stars art of excellence.......2004-02-08

This album from 1998 finds master Mexican songwriter Armando Manzanero in fine voice, his sound darker and more burnished. His songs, well what can you say of the greatest composer of Romantico Latin music? And the jazzy, spare, scintillating piano accompaniement of virtuosi Argentine talent Bebu Silvetti. Magnificent and a must for any Romantico fan-and I speak only "poquito" Spanish. Very excellent, reminding me of the Tony Bennett and Bill Evans albums.
