It's hard to imagine a honky-tonker who's more of a bedrock traditionalist than Austin's Wayne "the Train" Hancock. He seems oblivious to any musical progression since the early 1950s, continuing to resist even the use of drums as a new-fangled corruption of country music. Still, a slapped bass is all the percussion that this throwback Texan needs, as his entire band functions as a fiercely swinging rhythm instrument. On his first release for Bloodshot, highlights range from a couple of originals that sound like long-lost Hank Williams classics ("Sands of Time," "Route 23") to revived chestnuts including Jimmie Rodgers's "California Blues," Fats Waller's "Viper," and the hipster's perennial "Cow Cow Boogie." While additionally applying his rough-hewn vocal twang to the Hawaiian-guitar lilt of "Happy Birthday Julie" and the retro crooning of "Every Time" and "We Three," Rip Van Wayne remains true to an era that ended before rock & roll began. --Don McLeese

Salute to America.......2006-07-27
Very similar in quality and music to I Love A Parade and a very upbeat reminder of why we are a patriotic nation. The arrangements and quality of the songs are great.
A good choice but..........2005-06-29
It is not the best CD that I have bought but it is an honest one. The orchestration is good, the choice of tunes is excellent and the tunes are well played. As you know, it is always difficult to say : I like it or I hate it because hearing a CD is a question of personal point of view. In my case, I may not say that I like it or I hate it, I prefer some other orchestration but it us a good CD.
Ho-Hum.......2005-06-08
I wanted some rousing marching music. This album is half asleep. The sound quality is poor. Apparently Mr. Williams writes better music than he conducts.
"Boston Pops".. Alway's do the Job!.......2001-10-03
John Williams/Boston Pops.. Salute to America.
And they do! They salute America! This is a wonderful C.D
Battle Hymn of the Republic, is great..
New York, New York, will bring tears to your eyes!
12 renditions in all..
All these are performed wonderfully, and well worth the money!
I would recommend this to anyone who loves patriotic music, it will stir the heart and soul of Americans....
Full-Spirited.......2000-09-02
I'm a classical music/opera person for the most part. But I find this CD entralling. Even the organization of the CD is ideal-almost like a symphony--with the rousing Candide Overture and the musical medleys at the beginning, the patriotic songs as the B section, and the Dixieland and other music from American musicals to finish up. And I particularly like the orchestration of the medleys. A wonderful CD.

As one of Nashville's undersung treasures--though his material has been recorded by Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle--David Olney merits comparison with the late Townes Van Zandt (whose insidiously insistent "Snake Song" provides a highlight here). Both combine literate precision with a bluesy undercurrent, and a tragic sense of life with a lethal sense of humor. While this may be Olney's bluesiest album to date, it's also his most playful and musically expansive, with Dixieland brass, banjo, and ukulele framing the arrangements. The tropical lilt of the deadpan "Panama City" could pass as low-rent Jimmy Buffett, while the interplanetary comedian conjured on the title cut sounds like one of Randy Newman's narrators. Other songwriting highlights find Olney singing from the perspective of a ventriloquist's dummy on "Who's the Dummy Now?" and revisiting the Bible with "See How the Mighty Have Fallen." And for those who find his voice an acquired taste, just listen to him croon on the closing "Rainbow's End." --Don McLeese
Product Description
Over an impressive professional career spanning four decades, David Olney has built a reputation not as a kind-hearted troubadour, but rather as a performing songwriter with a sharp literary mind that often cuts to the bone of the human condition. Olney's songs have been recorded by an impressive list of artists including Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, Lonnie Brooks and many others, winning him a worldwide reputation as one of the best songwriters in America.

Loved the CD - One Tough Town.......2007-07-09
I am not familiar with David Olney, I just happened to hear a song on a local radio station and decided to order the CD.
He has a wide range of styles on this CD, look forward to hearing more of him in the future.
ALL THE RAGE, Nashville, TN- Wildcards- David Olney.......2007-06-14
9 p.m. Fri., June 15, The Basement, $8
What's that word for when there's only one provider of a certain product? A monopoly.
David Olney has a monopoly. He pretty much is a monopoly.
There's only one of him, and thus far nobody has been able to cop his riffs. He often writes songs through characters, with the narrative inhabiting the characters and also usually revealing something of himself. Sometimes that something is heartbreaking, sometimes funny, sometimes other stuff.
If you want something that sounds like David Olney, you've got to find David Olney. He's not hard to find, for the most part. This week he's at The Basement for a show that marks the release of his latest brilliant album, One Tough Town. That album finds him revealing a new batch of gems and also including a harrowing version of late, great old friend Townes Van Zandt's ''Snake Song.'' Van Zandt is one of the luminaries who has lavished mighty praise on Olney. Emmylou Harris has too, and so has Steve Earle, and so has anybody worth his or her salt who has ever witnessed a David Olney show.
Tommy Womack, who has his own little monopoly going, opens for Olney. Highly recommended.

A voice for all kinds..........2007-06-14
David Olney's newest release, "One Tough Town", is a record that ranges from pure folk to a bluesy rock. It includes ukulele, Tuba, clarinet, harmonica, and tremolo guitars. above and beyond the sound is Olney's songwriting. The track that stuck in my mind, "Who's The Dummy Now?", is about a struggling ventriloquist and the dummy who is getting tired of carrying the act. This an album that is not to be missed. Not to mention that the live show is amazing if you ever get a chance to catch it.

The long-overdue release of this seminal collection on CD is cause for celebration; not only that, but Delmark Records added four previously unreleased tracks, making this CD all the more essential for harp fans in general and Junior Wells fans in particular (and what harp fan could not like Wells?). The tracks on Blues Hit Big Town were recorded in 1953-54 and are thus of historical interest as well; these are Wells's first recordings, done shortly after he joined the Muddy Waters Band. From the slow, smoking "Hoodoo Man" and the title track, to the tight, high-powered "Cut That Out" and "Tomorrow Night," everything here is first-rate, and the added bonus tracks make this re-release a special treat. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
Junior's magnum opus.......2007-01-10
Rare is the occasion when, for the rest of your life, you will forever live in the shadow of your first published work, be it music, literature, film, etc. Such is the case with Blues Hit Big Town, unmatched by Junior Wells since in its virtuosity, intensity and creativity. Chicago attack harp at its zenith. The best rendition of Hoodoo Man Blues resides on this recording.
Not just for the archives.......2006-11-23
I completely agree with the reviewer from Exeter. This disk manages to sound both raw and polished--vivid and not overproduced.
The alternate version of "Lord Lord" has a few seconds of control room talkback before the music begins. I usually don't like this gimmick but in this case it's a magic glimpse of the collaboration behind these delicious tracks.
There are some tracks that seem mostly of historical or archival interest, and I'm not a historian of blues. But even putting those tracks aside, this disk is superb and worthwhile, not only for adding context to any Wells or Chicago blues collection, but also for its own sheer pleasure.
This is the best Junior Wells cd that will ever be........2004-07-26
1965's "Hoodoo Man" may be the best known, but it's been all downhill for Wells since this amazing stuff, done as a teenager in the fifties. Featuring guitar by Louis Myers, Elmore James, and Muddy Waters. Blues lovers should tell their punk-rock loving friends about this one: this has all the spirit of a young man's urge to break all the rules, but with CHOPS.
File under essential.......2004-07-15
Originally released in 1977, this album brings together Junior Wells' earliest singles, recorded in 1953 and 1954 when he was just a teenager (he turned 20 in December, 1954). This 1998 CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, five of which are alternate takes, and while the liner notes are somewhat sparse, the music is top-notch.
Junior Wells' first LP came out more than ten years later, in 1965, but these tough early singles, taped when Junior was Muddy Waters' harmonica player, are at least as seminal. Junior's sublime first reading of "Hoodoo Man" is here, alongside a rollicking "Cut That Out", a lean, mean "Please Throw This Poor Dog A Bone", the swinging "Tomorrow Night", and the blazing instrumentals "Eagle Rock" and "Junior's Wail".
Junior's rendition of John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "'Bout The Break Of Day" is every bit as powerful as "Hoodoo Man" (another Williamson-number) and he sounds thoroughly menacing on the grinding title track.
As well as playing with Muddy Waters, Junior Wells was the lead singer of the Aces for a while, a group which consisted of brothers Louis and Dave Myers on guitar and bass respectively, and drummer extraordinaire Fred Below. They back him on most of these recordings, and Johnnie Jones lends his considerable talents on piano on the 1953 sides.
And the great Elmore James appears as well, wielding his smouldering bottleneck on the master take of "Hoodoo Man". Piano player Otis Spann from the Muddy Waters band is rolling the 88s on the 1954 recordings, and Waters himself shows up as well, backing Wells on guitar.
These early recordings are some of Junior Wells' finest and grittiest, and while his blistering harmonica playing was often more or less absent on his 60s and 70s waxings, it takes centre stage on these superb 50s singles.
A must-have.
Even Before Hoodoo Man Blues, Junior Was Fantastic!!.......2002-11-08
Junior Wells has always been my personal favorite of the great blues harp players. With his soulful, punchy harmonica technique, exemplified on his classic "Hoodoo Man Blues" album, Junior created one of the coolest harp sounds around. With "Blues Hit Big Town," we are treated to the earliest recordings Junior made.
What this record shows primarily, is that even in his late teens, Junior Wells was an astounding harp player. On this record, Junior plays stuff that easily ranks among the finest harp ever laid down. His singing is also good, though his voice has not yet taken on the grittiness that would eventually make him one a the great blues singers.
The music on this album is some truly great Chicago blues. Whether on the original take of the classic "Hoodoo Man," the great instrumental "Eagle Rock," or the down in the alley sound of "Please Throw This Poor Dog A Bone," Junior's music runs the gamut of great Chicago sound.
The bottom line: another excellent entry into Junior Wells' library. Though not quite the perfection he would achieve on "Hoodoo Man Blues," it's pretty close, and a more than worthy addition to any blues fan's collection.

Customer Reviews:
Traditional Christmas Music .......2007-01-24
If you love traditional Christmas music, done in traditional style (i.e., no rock or jazz influence), this CD is for you. The Robert Shaw Chorale, the "gold standard" of quality choral music, sings much loved carols, with some lesser-known pieces as well. Some are a cappella; some include a full orchestral accompaniment. My favorites on this CD are "We Three Kings," "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella," and "I Saw Three Ships."
The quintessential Christmas recording.......2005-12-09
This recording seems to elicit universal and heartfelt praise. Who am I to dispute that? The performance is terrific, just as described by the other Amazon reviewers, no doubt about it.
However, I do have one bone to pick with this recording. There just isn't enough of it. With material as good as this, that is a real loss!
A Top List Christmas CD.......2004-12-28
I bought this cd long ago, and have enjoyed it immensely each year. It is the perfect blend of celebration and meditation. Orchestra and choir combine in four distinct groupings, and a capella arrangements complete the masterful collection. The orchestral arrangements will make the hairs on your neck stand up, and your stomach quiver with all the excitement you ever felt as a child at Christmas. Adeste Fidelis is performed as few other ensembles have ever come close. The a capella arrangements will all, without exception, be on your yearly list of must-hear holiday arrangements. Truly a top list Christmas CD, essential for every family who celebrates this feast.
The best.......2004-01-02
I own approximately 35 Christmas choral CDs - including choirs and groups such as the Cambridge Singers and the King Singers. I also own two Christmas albums with Robert Shaw and the Atlantic symphony. This performance with the Robert Shaw Chorale is old but it is still my favorite. The arrangements are magnificent, the sound is brilliant, and the choir and orchestra are precise with wonderful volume control. Buy and enjoy!
How do you describe perfection?.......2003-12-14
This is my favorite Christmas CD. Nothing comes close. I thoroughly enjoyed learning much of the music in high school choir over 30 years ago. The music has never left me. The four medleys are the arrangements of Robert Russell Bennett titled "The Many Moods of Christmas". The arrangements seem to have a freshness about them even after listening numerous times.
Interspersed with the medleys are a cappella carols.
All of this music is wonderfully performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale, the a cappella selections recorded in 1957 and the medleys in 1963.
Four decades have proven that this is the standard in choral music. The clarity of text, the richness of tone, the beauty of harmony combine to present the message of Christmas in the manner that only music can do.
These words are no surprise to those familiar with choral music in the United States. If you are not so familiar, but would like to enjoy Christmas music at its most beautiful, you can do no better than acquiring this CD.

Excllenet follow up to their debut CD.......2006-11-16
After a sucessful first album and follow up single Part Time Love from the Above The Rim soundtrack ;H-Town went back into the studio to record their sophomore album Beggin' After Dark. The album wasn't sucessful as the first but true R&B fans know that it was a quality album. The most popular single from this album was the underplayed and also underrated "Emotions". Other hits included "Sex Bowl", "Full Time", "Much Feelin' (And It Tastes Great)", and "Baby I Love Ya" featuring the late Roger Troutman. One of the strongest songs that wasn't a single is One Night Gigloo.
SEXY, SEXY, SEXY!!!!!!.......2005-03-11
This cd was just as good as the first one!! But this one is a little more sexy and seductive!! And with voices like those....It's enough to make any woman wanna scream!!!!!

This Cd still gets play in my truck today, simply a classic! (R.I.P. DINO)
True R&B!!!!.......2003-02-23
This is one of my all time favorite albums! I've been a die-hard fan of H-Town's from the beginning. From start to finish this album is just beautiful.... the music, the melodies, harmonies and the emotion is so incredible. If you love r&b and smooth slow jams this is for you. R.I.P. "Dino", Kevin Conner, your soul stirring and passionate vocals have inspired me and I will love you forever.
One of the Great R & Bee Ballads of the 90s...........2001-04-02
The great underrated and underplayed tune "Emotions" presented here on H-Town's 2nd CD. I think it got lost in the Jodeci-R. Kelly 90's music era rush...Most people I know kinda dug "Sex Bowl" from this same CD, too.

This two-CD set is a true gem. The second features songs with lyrics written by Andy Razaf--familiar tunes such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Ain't Misbehavin'"--for such luminaries as Fats Waller and Eubie Blake. Fantastic liner notes taken from the original album.
The title CD features 70 minutes of Cole Porter brought to dazzling light by Bobby Short's fabulous voice and piano. Some of the tracks were previously unpublished, some part of the many Broadway shows and Hollywood movies Porter collaborated on. If you're not too familiar with Porter, but are a Woody Allen fan, you'll certainly recognize "I'm In Love Again" from 'Hannah and her Sisters'. "Weren't We Fools" has something for everyone who has loved and lost and loved again.
When I first played this CD, my 2 1/2+ year-old son said "Mommy plays pretty music"...at every pause between tracks he said "More music is coming." Yes, Bobby Short will make everyone love Cole Porter. Short's magnetic personality and energy shines through the technology so you can simply close your eyes and imagine yourself in the Cafe Carlyle or any other venue where he played.
Pop this CD in your car and you won't care if someone cuts you off or doesn't signal a turn....
What Living in NY Was All About.......2004-01-18
I, too, treasure the 2-disc vinyl set of "Bobby Short Loves Cole Porter." This particular issue of the CD is a bargain...it was originally issued a few years ago at, if I recall correctly, over $30. More years ago than I want to remember, while living in New York, I had the pleasure of spending my 30th birthday at the Carlyle and Mr. Short with my first wife...who also later became my second! But I digress...This disc set is one I treaure, and one who anyone with a sense of musical style [which invariably means a keen sense of personal style, I find] will enjoy. So, my STRONG advice: mix an ice-cold Manhattan or martini [stir it...don't shake!], settle down over some terrific hor d'oevres, and let the nuances that can define love and life overtake you. Nothing better.
He's The Top.......2003-11-08
I've been waiting 20 years for "Bobby Short Loves Cole Porter" to be released on CD. I don't know what the problem might have been, but the Atlantic vinly two-disc set from the seventies is perhaps my favorite jazz vocal recording of all time. This album features Bobby with his two longtime sidemen - Robby Scott on drums and the late, great Beverly Peer bowing the double bass. About Cole Porter nothing more need be said. And the whole shebang is cheaper than two drinks at the Cafe Carlyle bar. Buy it and treasure it.

Album Description
Produced by Lloyd Maines (Wilco, Richard Buckner, Joe Ely, and, yes, the Dixie Chicks), "A-Town Blues" is loose and live, baby. Pedal steel, guitars, and buckhouse bassthat's it. No trickery or effects, just the finely honed chops of a band that's been known to play 200+ dates in a year. They swing through a set of songs that reflect Wayne's scorn for the soulless, pocketbook-driven sounds that ooze out of Nashville; songs that reminisce about old friends and family; songs that sing praises to the road and songs that rue the hazards of hooch.

A Town Blues - Wayne Hancock.......2007-01-10
Excellent choice from this lively Texas rockabilly artist. See him in concert if you ever have the chance.
"Oh my goodness!".......2006-06-05
I initially bought A Town Blues for the track "Man of the Road" which I wanted to feature in a radio programme I was compiling on US road music. After hearing the album in its entirety I was so impressed by the songs, the musicianship and - and there's no other way to put it - honesty of the music that it's now a firm favourite and never far from my CD player. It would be pointless to single out any track as a standout because they're all pretty wonderful, but there is something special about the poignant "Happy Birthday Julie" - Hancock's wearily resigned and lovelorn vocal taking the melody into unexpected places (in fact, I can well imagine Willie Nelson covering this song). The production is sparse, the musicianship brilliant: it's evident that Hancock and his band had a ball while creating a classic (in just 20 hours!). Honky tonk, Western swing, rockabilly: this is an album brimming with real country music that really moves - in more ways than one. Highly recommended.
A thousand miles and more..........2005-09-26
This album is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. The songs are memorable for their raw, honest lyrics, as well as for the toe-tapping guitars. Wayne Hancock is a true American gem who blends country, hillbilly swing, rockability, and blues to form a cadre of songs that are hard to get out of your head.
So tie one on and make a thousand miles...
One of my all-time favorite albums!.......2005-03-01
Being by one of my preferred performers, I believe this is Wayne Hancock's best recording, thus making "A-Town Blues" one of my all-time favorites. For me, this album has been the soundtrack to an endless number of backroad desert adventures. I can no longer travel into the land of cacti, agaves, yuccas and sage without playing "A-Town Blues." Song choice is what distinguishes this recording from Hancock's others. It is ballad heaven. The album sounds like a greatest hits. 'Happy Birthday Julie' is perhaps my favorite song by Hanock, but other gems include 'California Blues,' 'Miller, Jack and Mad Dog,' 'Viper,' 'We Three,' 'Man of the Road,' and darn it!!! I fell in the same trap as so many reviewers before myself; when picking the best songs, I listed most of the tunes on the album! Suffice to write that the heartfelt ballads, the earthy singing, the juke-joint bass, the less-than-none steel guitar makes this one of my all-time favorite recordings and it can be yours too!
