About the Artist
Much like the paintings of singer/songwriter/performer and painter Tim Bowen, his music takes pieces from everyday life- objects, themes, emotions, etc. and blends peaceful yet thought provoking imagery that often leaves a listener tapping or humming any one of the 14 original songs on VARIETY, Bowen's first full-length release.

A Philadelphia native, Bowen contributed to the birth of garage rock with the Philadelphia based seminal '70's group The Boneheads. Imagine pop music with a twist...sort of like David Lowery of Camper Van Beethoven meets George Jones by way of Liverpool if you will. Influenced as a youngster by the diversity of 60's AM pop radio, Bowen launched his musical career in junior high school which continued in various incarnations through college and right up to the birth of modern rock. Opening for such acts as the B52s, Brian Setzer, Nico of the Velvet Underground and one-step-beyond's Madness, Bowen has transcended popular music with a laissez faire approach.

During the years he spent concentrating on his painting career, which included time in Rome, (Bowen's work can be found in collections that include Forbes, Aramark and Wills Eye Hospital) Bowen constantly noted the homogenization of pop music and grew more and more perturbed. He believes that music is a gift, not something that should be ego driven or judged by record sales, and in the tradition of great musicians, Bowen doesn't make any attempt to create anything other than true uninhibited music.

VARIETY contains 14 songs that range from country twang to Americana to pop to beautiful ballads to good ol' rock and roll. The album was produced by legendary Philly drummer George Manney, whose recent credits include producer for the Rolling Hayseeds and Burn Witch Burn. Manney is also credited as being the founding member of the "last minute jam" at the immortally-remembered (and sorely missed) J.C.Dobbs.

In addition, VARIETY features major contributions from keyboardist Rocco Notte, co-founder and principle songwriter for Arista recording group and Philly's own The A's.

Milkshake, the duo of Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl (alums of the pop/rock act Love Riot), pours heart and soul into Bottle of Sunshine, and kids ages one to six will slurp it up the same way they did Happy Songs, Milkshake's harmony-thick debut. Mathews's pleasant voice (reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies's Margo Timmons' in its sleepy, drifty, peacefulness), and a light acoustic touch earns this act a spot in the cool kids' musicians category. Parents will love Sunshine for its pared-down folk/rock sound, and kids will appreciate a lack of shyness when it comes to getting silly. For parents, some children's records make the drone of a blender seem a preferable listening experience. In the span of two super-smooth discs, Milkshake manages to reverse all that. --Tammy La Gorce

Album Description

Well, true to the phrase "Good things take time," two years after the release of our 2002 debut CD Happy Songs, we present Bottle Of Sunshine. The disc offers fifteen brand new Milkshake originals the whole family can groove to. You'll also find lots of variety here, although most of the songs still live in the rock genre. We recorded "ABC Of Me" live in the studio with a jazz combo. It's a new take on the Alphabet Song, and each letter stands for some quality or thing that reminds us of how great we are, and how wonderful childhood is. "Boom Boom" turned into a country rock song as we added fiddle and banjo and a "yee-haa". There's a doo-wop tinged song about having fun in the water called "Woo-Woo." There are some totally acoustic songs ("Bluebird" and "Milkshake!") and some very electrified, all-out rock songs ("School" and "Space Song"). But every song is memorable. And each one was great fun to record.

British children's author/illustrator Alexis Deacon created the cover art for Bottle of Sunshine, along with illustrations for the 16-page booklet accompanying the CD. Please look for his wonderful children's books "Slow Loris" and "Beegu," both published by Kane Publishers, NY.

Bottle of Sunshine also contains a bonus: three Milkshake music videos of songs from Happy Songs. Two of these, "Fingers & Toes" and "Tall", are fully animated. The third, "Happy Song", is a live action video with some animation sprinkled here and there.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-10

I love this CD-my son can listen to it over and over and over again. One of their best!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining .......2007-01-06

From preschoolers to first graders, "Bottle Of Sunshine" will prove a 'kid friendly' favorite with its toe-tapping tunes, hand-clapping rhythms, and sing-along lyrics flawlessly delivered by Milkshake (singer Lisa Mathews and guitarist Mikel Ghel) with their usual flair and easy expertise. The fifteen superbly presented and impressively recorded pieces comprising this outstanding and highly recommended CD album for children include: Bluebird; School; Woo-Woo; Milkshake!; Boom, Boom; ABC of Me; Space Song; Book of Dreams; Jump; Smile; Ms. R&R; Rainy Day; One Wish; Sleepytown; and the title piece, Bottle of Sunshine. This is a wonderfully entertaining and sure to be kid-pleasing addition to any family, preschool, daycare center, elementary school, or community library CD music collection for children. Also highly recommended is Milkshake's other kid's CD, "Play!" which features songs about kids having fun playing baseball, bowling, pretending, playing music, having parades, planting a garden, and more!

5 out of 5 stars Fun... and won't dull your brain........2006-11-05

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old daughter after hearing the ABC song at library storytime. She has some definite favorites and asks for them as soon as we get in the car. The songs are cheerful, clever and fun to dance/sing along with. We recently ordered another copy as a gift for a 5 year old. She LOVES it too!
Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Music Grownups can enjoy with their kids!.......2005-11-16

Not only do my kids love the music, but I do too!! We've seen them live and they're awesome. Lisa has so much energy and dances around in her "tutu" and those "crazy tights" and Mikel is so awesome with the kids. They are talented musicians who make kids music fun for everyone. Watch them on Noggin - Jack's Music Show. The videos are lively and fun! I hope they'll make a DVD of the videos, including the one's on their web site.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for mom also!!.......2005-08-22

My 5 and 2 year old love this CD. We were able to see Milkshake live. They were so entertaining, my kids were dancing the whole time. I had to buy the CD. We all love listening to it. Yes even I like listening to it. I am so glad we added this CD to our collection and you will be also.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Rhythms on Parade, a revised and expanded version of an earlier album, is one of Palmer's most inspired collections. Catchy tunes encourage kids to sing, play, and march along, while Palmer skillfully uses pitch, tempo, and rhythm to reinforce his lyrics. In "Roller Coaster," for instance, tempo and pitch vary to conjure an image of a roller coaster slowly climbing a hill and then rushing down the other side. Palmer sounds comfortable using a wide variety of sounds (including a children's chorus, percussion, keyboards, strings, and woodwinds) in a number of styles (ballads, jitterbugs, and country, among others), which should delight most any child. Rhythms on Parade is an easily accessible study of rhythm that will leave both parent and child humming long after the music stops. --Tami Horiuchi

Album Description

Throughout his phenomenal, almost 30-year career, Elvis Costello has proved himself one of the most versatile and inventive stars in the pop music firmament. He first rose to fame as one of punk rock's breakthrough talents then went on to release innovative albums interpreting a truly diverse range of genres. Costello-originally Liverpool's own Declan McManus-has made an indelible mark on the pop music songbook, bringing unfettered passion and profound lyrical weight to his richly creative stylistic adventures. These three titles continue Rhino's Deluxe Edition restoration of his extraordinary catalogue.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Bonus Discs!.......2005-08-29

The bonus disc on this album is really wonderful, quite possibly my favorite bonus disc of all of the Rhino reissues for Elvis Costello. It's an interesting collection of Elvis taste in music and his influences.

5 out of 5 stars A treat.......2004-09-23

One of the best things about the prolific, complex Elvis Costello is that he is steeped in popular music. Some of his best records, from the Stax/Motown inspired Get Happy! to the Burt Bacharach collaboration Painted From Memory, wear their influences on their sleeves, but it's okay, because he's so creative and he loves the music so much. Sometimes, I think his encyclopedic knowledge causes his reach to exceed his grasp; he can be as great as his heroes, but not as great as ALL his heroes.

But no matter for this CD. "Kojak Variety," both the original album and the surprising, generous bonus CD, are relaxed cover versions of music by writers who've inspired him all his life, or whose talents he admires today. Paul McCartney. George Gershwin. Mose Allison. Gram Parsons. Holland-Dozier-Holland. Ray Davies. Jerry Garcia. Jesse Winchester. Bruce Springsteen. Bob Dylan. Van Morrison. Ray Noble. Paul Simon. And more. The first disc is just a remaster of the album that came out to little notice in 1995. It is unjustly neglected excellence, made especially so by the fantastic backing musicians whose collobarative arrangements are deeply enjoyable. It's an interesting combo--the avant guitarist Marc Ribot, but also the old-timer James Burton. Former attractions drummer Pete Thomas, but also session aces Larry Knechtel and Jim Keltner. It works great.

The second disk is not like most reissue/extra track packages, in that it is not outtakes, but other "cover" versions Costello produced under a variety of circumstances. The best music on the bonus disk--maybe the best music in the whole package--are the demos Elvis did of other people's songs in the style of George Jones, hoping to convince George Jones to boost his career by covering tunes like "Brilliant Disguise" by Springsteen or "Congratulations" by Paul Simon. These versions are even more relaxed and confident than what you find on the first disk. The rest of it is a mix of Irish music, jazzy stuff, and tunes he contributed to tribute albums for, among others, the Grateful Dead and Gram Parsons. It's all worth hearing.

If Costello's albums of original material ever start to seem too fussy or over-written, pull this disc out for some perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Nice romp through Elvis music collection.......2004-08-29

When "Kojak Variety" was first released it was ignored by most EC fans and mentioned by critics as an example of a lack of inspiration on EC's part. Nothing could be further from the truth. While "Spike" and "Mighty As A Rose" demonstrated EC's diversity over the course of a single album, "Kojak" demonstrates where that inspiration originally came from. What's best about this reissue is the second disc included here. With thirty (!) remakes of classic contemporary and older rock 'n' roll gems, the second disc makes this the gem of the recent EC trio of reissues.

Covering Springsteen's "Brilliant Disguise" and a number of other songs to convince George Jones to tackle better material makes for great listening. It tells you 1) Who EC listens to and 2)How great he can be covering other people's definitive versions of their own songs. The gem here aside from "Brilliant Disguise" (which I had as a CD single)is the remake of Paul McCartney's little known gem "Step Inside Love". The song was written for Petula Clark but it sports one of McCartney's lush and innovative melodies. We're also treated to an alternate version of "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man", Arthur Alexander's "Sally Sue Brown", Van Morrison's "Full Force Gale", The Grateful Dead's marvelous "Ship of Fools" and a gem I had never heard before called "My Resistance is Low".

The liner notes are extensive and cover the sessions for the album as well as why EC decided to cover the material he did. Oh, and we finally find out where the enigmatic title comes from as well (there's even photographic evidence to back it up). A delightful covers album. While I've always liked "Almost Blue" (and the reissue has some delightful additional material as well), I've always been more of a rocker at heart. Here we get a glimpse into EC's heart full of rock 'n' roll and soul.

4 out of 5 stars The BEST bonus disc of the EC re-issues, ever!.......2004-08-25

I have always had a soft spot for this particular chapter in Elvis Costello's library. Recorded roughly the same time as "Spike," it sat in a vault for a few years before Elvis could talk the WB into putting it out. The original "Kojak Variety" is basically a lighthearted romp through 15 of Elvis' favorites. In the (now expanded) liner notes, he also mentions that it was recorded in about two weeks time. The loose feel of the songs does hint at that, and it provided some of the more uptempo numbers with a free wheeling charm.

But who would have thought that, in this reissue series comprised of Elvis Costello's "neglected" albums, (including "Almost Blue" and "Goodbye Cruel World"), it would be "Kojak Variety" that spawned the best bonus disc of Rhino's ongoing re-releases for ANY of his career? For a change, you get a disc that could've held its own as a solo album, and had it been released as "Kojak Variety Vol 2" would have raised more than a few eyebrows.

As Elvis explains in the liner notes, 10 of these 20 (whew!) extra songs were recorded as a pseudo demo for George Jones as EC's attempt to cut convince Jones to cut a more contemporary country album. These ten covers crush the easy-bake Nashville mentality that tied an anchor to "Almost Blue" down to shrapnel. Had THESE songs been Elvis' valentine to country music, maybe folks might have understood how songs like "Stranger In The House" or "Radio Sweetheart" sounded more honest than anything on "Almost Blue." In particular, assembling "Brilliant Disguise," "Congratulations" and "Innocent When You Dream" in such a consistent manner makes what was basically a likable curio in the Costello library even more fun to own, and raises my rating from its earlier 3 star to the new 4 star commendation.

As to the original CD itself, "Kojak Variety" still holds a mixed bag of treats. Randy Newman is a spiritual kin to EC anyway, so it's little surprise that his "I've Been Wrong Before" comes of very strong. "Remove This Doubt" recasts EC as a Supreme, which is good for a smile, and he also does a passable Dylan on "I Threw It All Away." And since country-esque ballads have long been one of his strong suits, "Must You Throw Dirt in My Face" is a perfect fit.

On the other hand, "Bama Lama Bama Loo" and "Leave My Kitten Alone" provide evidence that not every song needs to be re-recorded. And as good as "Days" is from the Kinks' catalog, it comes across as clumsy sounding here. (As opposed to the Wim Wenders' "Till End Of The World" soundtrack where it was a standout.)

I am also happy that "Ship Of Fools" pops up here from the "Deadicated" tribute CD, as well as his version of The Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." I'll also compliment the remaster for giving the entire album a much more spacious atmosphere. The new liner notes also give more details to the genesis of the album, including finally giving the secret origins of the album's title!

How much you need to have "Kojak Variety" again depends on how fanatical of an EC completist you happen to be. I will say it will never leave my library and if he ever does release another volume, (please Elvis, don't skip ANY volumes), I'll be there to buy it. Can't wait to see what his favorite songs from the seventies were.....

4 out of 5 stars Not much more than interesting..........2004-08-24

This collection of covers is slightly superior to his OTHER collection of covers, Almost Blue. There are a couple of interesting choices here, and it's good for a few listens, but I doubt it will find its way back into many CD players after the initial novelty wears off.

4 out of 5 stars First listen to Oliva Tremor Control's Dusk at Cubist Castle.......2006-04-16

I got the Colicot Asleep in the Poppies album because Amazon.com recommended it to me and usually Amazon's recommendations hit the mark. This is not a bad album at all (I rate it 4 out of 5 stars), but being the Olivia Tremor Control fan that I am, I can't help but notice that almost each song has a direct lifting from the Dusk at Cubist Castle album. Down to the use and stylings of the instruments. For example, the sound of a track being rewound then sped up, the creepy theramin, the big fuzzy guitar. Also the choice of subject is increadibly similar.
Again, I am not saying that this a bad album at all it's just too dang similar to not notice. Really.

5 out of 5 stars Plays like a movie on acid..........2006-01-17

Probably the most bizarre..."thing" I've ever heard. Not to say it's bad. I just don't think it does the album justice by calling it merely an "album". Why? Because it's so much more than just an "album". Basically the premise of the story is about a Coquelicot that falls in love with a man in one of her dreams while she's asleep. Of course, if I explained further it would probably necessitate a short essay. But while the story is intricate, and unbelievably detailed itself, the music is even moreso. Not unlistenable by any means, but perhaps bewildering on first/second/third listen. Kevin Barnes twists his poetry into fairy tales in free verse and prose. Rhymes come together in ways not thought possible. The imagination at work is far beyond comprehensible. But this makes it all the more fascinating. The melodies are there, too, but unconventionally so. Generally the melodies change quickly, creating a bizarre.... I'm ranting. It's beautiful is what it is. Totally worth your money. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Good Great Got It.......2005-09-02

On first listen I thought "...man,this is so stupid?" but as soon as the second listen came around it was just off the hook crazy good, I don't know why I changed my mind like that about this CD but it just turned out that way. It's kinda like a Musical Play but in there style, like pretty much every song talks about the same thing although you don't get bored because with Of Montreal they do a lot of tempo changes so your more focused at the music than anything else really. 22 Songs so it's defenitly takes awhile to get through it but it's all worth it, plus there are some really funny stuff on this disc but I don't want to give it away

5 out of 5 stars Amazing album!.......2005-06-07

My personal fav. - Let's Go For A Walk
So touching.
All of the songs are great actually.
Funny, miniature stories, too.

4 out of 5 stars What A Concept (Album)!.......2005-05-08

This album is Of Montreal's Concept Piece, and it works quite effectively for about half an hour, then starts to grate a little. A triumph of style over substance, it's akin to eating a boxful of fruit loops cereal- it tastes sweet as all get out, but you feel quite sick afterwards.Nevertheless, I'm a huge fan of concept albums (Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Dark Side of the Moon, Kid A), so I give this album a more than fair four star rating. But then again I might just be on a sugar rush from listening to this album.

This CD, along with the Magic Wand is a favorite for children's classes. This cd has very well know songs with preparations for the port de bras.

Wonderful variations from Tchaikovsky Theme and Variations are also included, as well as the famous waltz from Etudes, and Don Q. Lisa Harris has played for top notched dancers and companies throughout the United States, Europe, South America and in Asia.

4 out of 5 stars My Favorite Ballet Class I & II.......2004-08-04

I loved this cd--it includes many classical works so that music education can be part of the Ballet Class Education experience.
Teachers--this is wonderful for Intermediate levels!

5 out of 5 stars Music that inspires.......2004-04-27

I have just about all of Lisa Harris cd's and this is one
of my favorites. There is so much variety, and the
the kids light up when they hear the songs they recognize.
I will be buying more of Lisa Harris' cd's in the future.

2 out of 5 stars A few flaws..........2004-01-07

Although this cd is good quality, and has many options for each part of class, there are a few flaws. First, the length and tempo for each track is not listed, and many of the tracks are very short. This works if you are teaching a class for young children, however for more advanced classes they are way too short. Also, many of the tracks are versions of popular and broadway music, which to me becomes a little grating after a while.

This is a 'must have' for anyone who enjoys either Turkish or Middle Eastern music. Wonderful for just listening to, or even meditating; very relaxing music. Not particularly for belly dancing, but would be appreciated by dancers for sure.

5 out of 5 stars This CD represents the best of Turkish Classical Music.......2001-04-08

I was searching for a representative of the Classical Turkish Music to introduce my friends to Turkish music and I was very happy when I found this one. The selection is masterly-played, the songs are mostly slow, captivating and soulful. The music has a good "old" quality that takes you to the Ottoman palace and starts you to dream. Certainly a "must have" if you're willing to experience a different piece of music.

Album Description

The Lap Steel Guitar has been called ..."the most expressive and toneful instrument ever conceived". When you hear this album, you'll know why. Featuring a diverse range of musical styles such as Country, Hawaiian, Folk, Western Swing, Surf 'Noir'and New Age, performed by spectacular musicians from The United States, Canada, Hawaii and Australia. Some of the musicians are legendary, some have played with 'legends'. All are brilliant. Included are some 'classic' songs as well as some new compositions that are pure genius. There are two vocal tracks that show another dimension to the depth and versatility the instrument has to offer. This CD is guranteed to 'steel' your heart.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good but a bit misleading.......2004-01-07

First-I liked the album. The good things about it included the variety and breadth of musical styles - from Bob Brozman (poster child for all things National Guitar) to Kayton Roberts who does a nice version of Bells of St. Mary's. My only gripe is that much of the music deviates from what is known as the "lap steel guitar" (a relatively small electrified six to 10 string instrument), offering various slide guitar and resonator guitar songs as well. It would be as if they called a record "all about trombones" and only include one or two songs just with trombones and the rest with other instruments. I was not disappointed with the sound, but thought that they could have either called it something else or included more actual lap steel guitars on the record.
