About the Artist
Born and raised in Iowa, Janie Kae comes from a family with a very talented background and strong ambition. Janie grew up singing and listening to country music at a very young age. Her late father Udell Engelby was her biggest influence and was amongst one of the greatest in many eyes. Janie would sit in and sing with her father's band on many occasions throughout her early years. Janie Kae continued her musical interests and began writing at the age of 13, joining many groups and participating in contest throughout her high school career. She then attended College to study Audio Recording Technology. In 1993 She recorded her 1st album - "Water In My Eyes". Janie then moved to the east coast to start a family and continue her songwriting. In 1999 while back in the midwest she joined her first band, Redeye, a well known band based in Norfolk, Ne. While singing with Redeye Janie Kae is pursuing a solo career. And with what her father last told her, "Show 'em What You Got", Janie Kae is doing exactly that with her new CD - Something About You.

When Princess Diana was killed in that 1997 car accident, the world all but went into convulsions. I have to say it; I was adamantly NOT one of them. But Elton John was close to her (and to Gianni Versace - the infamous video of Elton and Diana at Verscse's memorial service), and his grief carried into this moment. He was so swept up in the time that he recast "Candle In The Wind," one of his strongest melodies, as a tribute and even rewrote the lyric. The result became a number-one song all over the world, and the all-time greatest selling single. That makes it, as a tribute, a monumental achievement.

By that measure, this is certainly a classic. The original A-side, "Something In The Way You Look Tonight," is one of the better songs from the otherwise lackluster "Big Picture." Since this single is the only place that "Candle In The Wind '97" is available (he has yet to insert it on any hits collections), its singularity makes this a keeper.

This is Elton John, one of the best classic rock piano players of all time in my opinion. The 1997 version of "Candle in the Wind" is a piano solo, which puts people in the mood for moments of relaxation. "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" is another Elton John classic that is very pretty and happy as well. Elton refuses to have "Candle in the Wind 1997" put on any other disc nor to ever sing it's lyrics again so all who want this selection legally must buy it and give the proceeds to the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Although I prefer the old version of "Candle in the Wind" this version is worth every penny.

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

This CD is the one you want to have with you all the time! Incredible vocals, incredible band and top notch sound quality makes this a winner! I find myself listening to the entire CD from beginning to end and then all over again! These songs will please anyone and is not just for Jazz fans.

Great Jazz/Easy Listening CD with some popular standards performed in a fresh way. Pamela Luss' voice is top notch and the backing band is very, very good. Favorites include 'At Long Last Love' and 'Georgia on My Mind,' a really nice version of a song that has been done by millions of others! I highly recommend this CD!

She has a smooth and passionate voice. I highly recommend this album! Makes a great gift too because most of the songs are well-known and it appeals to most any age group! She has arranged these familiar songs in a really unique way. One of my favorite songs is There's Something About You I Don't Know.

There may indeed be no business like show business. RCA was a major backer of this musical, and fully expected to record the original cast album. Decca, Merman's recording label, wouldn't allow her to appear. The solution the two compnaies decided on was an original cast album on RCA featuring Dinah Shore doing Merman's numbers, and this mediocre studio album.

Decca was never a winner when it came to modern recording techniques. Merman's voice has no echo or reverb to enhance her performance. The arrangements are by Gordon Jenkins, which fit Ethel's style like it was a dress bought in a bargain basement. It is a shame that in the later years of her life, Ethel didn't choose to revisit this score and re-record it, as she did with Annie Get Your Gun twice.

The selections from Panama Hattie are a nice rarity, but they are taken from scratchy shellac originals. There are several compilations that include these numbers with no annoying extraneous noise.

    Cesare Siepi's bass voice is greatly underrepresented in the CD catalogue. This album lets us know what an artist he was. His interpretations are always just right, and never over the top. Only an occasional accent slips in. His English diction should be a model for all singers. I lost no more than 5% of the words. The wonderful way he caresses his way into "Night and Day" or sails through "Begin the Beguine" are wonderful examples of his artistry. Siepi includes the often omitted verses to each song, and that is a plus.

    The sound quality is more than acceptable. It isn't digital, but here the fidelity comes from the artistry and not the sound itself. In fact the sound quality is a lot better than the 1955 recording date might indicate. I was not bothered in the least ... in fact I was pleasantly surprised.

    There are unfortunately lots of typos in the notes that should have been corrected. Myto should review such things before putting them out on the market.

    Siepi's way with the Italian songs is equally enjoyable. How nice to have someone sing them instead of bawling them to the rafters. This is a winner album, and it would be 5 stars if the sound were a little more modern.

    Despite the inferior sound quality of this CD, it is pleasing to have this unusual collection available. Cesare Siepi is a great artist, with the best English diction of any classical Italian singer within memory. Although I remember him best as the most dashing and truly seductive Don Giovanni at the Met, he is equally convincing with a popular song. A rare achievement! Siepi, I love you as much today as I did when I was an infatuated teenager.

    Angela Bofill is one of those artists that most of us only find out about via word of mouth. She is another uniquely talented songstress who, throughout the 80's was given a chance to put their own imprint on the music scene. I always loved the fact that she mixed afro/cubano music into one or two tracks on her early albums. I unfortunately have yet to see this woman perform live and hope to one day.

    That being said, this album ranks 2nd in my mind behind "Too Tough". Although some of the songs sound dated and can easily be picked out as music from the early 80's, Angela's voice and joyful singing on the entire disc more than makes up for that fact.

    I love listening to this entire disc but the standout tracks to me are: SOMETHING ABOUT YOU, ON & ON, TROPICAL LOVE, YOU SHOULD KNOW BY NOW, THREE BLIND MICE & TIME TO SAY GOODBYE.

    If you've had it with the music of today, this is an excellent snapshot of a past era when quality music was the standard that artists aspired to not the exception.

    I had heard some Angela Bofill numbers before hearing this CD, but was not that familiar with her. Thanks, in part, to the reviews I read here, I was intrigued about this CD. Also, I noticed that it had a song called "Love Light" on it. After hearing a snippet of the song I realized it was a song I have been looking for for over 20 years. I remember hearing the song "Love Light" in the original version by Yutaka Yokokura & Patti Austin on a Quiet Storm radio program. I remember loving the song & wishing I could find a copy. I have found some of Yutaka's CD's but "Love Light" is very hard to find. Anwyay, though this isn't the original version, I do now have this song in my collection & it is definitely performed well by Angela Bofill.

    The rest of the CD is just as good. I agree that some of the disco-ish numbers sound a little out of date, but the production & her voice make up for it.

    For fans of Pauline Wilson & Seawind (a fusion group from the late 70's who I really liked & whose albums are hard to find), I find that Bofill's voice reminds me a little of Pauline Wilson's though it is no imitation. Some of the songs have a Seawind feel to them, so it is almost like I have re-discovered Seawind as well.

    Anyway, thank you reviewers for helping me discover this wonderful CD. I sure wish there was more music like this out there today. Really, the music on this CD, though it is from 1981, sounds very un-dated & still fresh today.

    This was the album that introduced me to Angela's music and it was also the start of a musiocal love affair that continues to this day. With such ever-beautiful songs as "You Should Know By Now", "Only Love", "Tropical Love" and especially "Break It To Me Gently" Angela became my very favorite female singer. This reissue contains four bonus tracks (including "Love Light" and "Rhythm Of Your Mind"). Although the Japanese import reissue's sound quality IS better, you really should get this one (or both if you can afford it!).

    Though the latin and jazz influences that laced "Angie" and "Angel of the Night" are pretty much gone, "Something About You" is still a throughly enjoyable album. It's mellow, supple soul with a little pop thrown in - a true testament to the budding production prowess of Narada Michael Walden. While I liked the jazzy feel of her GRP work, this album really should not have alienated jazz folks the way it did. Had they taken the time to listen, they would have found quite a bit to savor. From the chugging funk of the title track, to the floating rhythms of "Tropical Love," there are plenty of solid tracks here. She does a sparkling rendition of the Stylistics' "Stop Look Listen" that is just as good as her take on "People Make the World Go Round" from "Angel." There are four bonus tracks tacked onto the end. There is a Spanish take on "Holding Out for Love," and a charming duet with Walden called "Never Wanna Be Without Your Love" that was not included in the original album. The best part of this reissue are the two tracks dug up from the "Angel" sessions. "Love Light" is a gorgeous jazzy-soul tune, much like "Angel of the Night" or "Baby I Need Your Love." I suspect it's the same session players from most of that album. "Rhythm of Your Mind," from the same sessions, also shows off her nimble phrasing and fine songwritng. So overall, this is a good album, even though it goes beyond jazz contexts. It's good early-80s soul from a fantastic singer.

        Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!

        I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.

        Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.

        I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.
