    Last year, press everywhere agreed I:Scintilla as the one of the most outstanding discoveries by longtime pioneering genre label, Alfa Matrix. Their Havestar EPCD was an immediate club favourite and I:Scintilla rapidly began appearing on countless compilations both on the metal and electro scene while their video for "Capsella" received heavy rotation around the world.

    Today, the Illinois-based quartet continue their fast ascension towards the top with their new album, Optics, an intoxicating blend of industrial beats and atmospheric creations. The seductive voice of female singer Brittany Bindrim instantly brings comparisons to Garbage and Evanescence, while their intricate layers of guitars and dominating electro synth lines bring them closer to the feel of Nine Inch Nails.

            Album Description

            THE APPROACH, the electrifying debut cd from illinois-based I:SCINTILLA, is truly a testament to its title. The 41 minutes of dark and brooding soundscapes speak volumes of the potential the group is about to unearth. Although each track flows to the next, the music seemlessly jumps genres. Hard-hitting industrial treats like "Havestar" and "Scin" give way to the thoughtful electro-pop in "Capsella Bursa Pastoris" and all is wrapped up during the schizophrenic climax of "The Bells". One listen to THE APPROACH will leave the listener begging to know what will happen when the band finally "arrives".

            Like a lot of earlier CDs from other artists, you find lower quality sound, probably due to the equipment or the experience of the artists at the time. Such is the case here. The songs are mostly the same as Havestar, they are just the original mixes. Sad to say, in this case the remixes turned out better, although the original Capsella Bursa Pastoris is still a great song. As much as I like I:Scintilla, I'm not really likely to keep listening to this CD =/

            ...a band comes along that is destined for greatness. I:scintilla is one of these. Those of us fortunate enough to live in the Champaign/Urbana area that have seen them live savor every thundering performance.I've seen a lot of bands come and go for many years (I'm 52!)and one that is both original and true to kickass rock and roll is rare these days. Chevelle, Breaking Benjamin, and Tool are good examples. I:scintilla's gutslamming guitar riffs and clubbing bass lines combined with Brittany Bindram's searing and soulful vocals are an experience you never forget. Add brilliantly synthed drums and background ambience and you have a unique package of heavy rock, spacey interludes, and just enough techno to make this band cutting edge.
            Their debut album "The Approach" is a faithful studio version of their live show. As good as it is, you don't hear anything that isn't in their performance. Pretty amazing for a band that's only been together for a little over a year. The CD is very well produced, all the tracks blend together seamlessly. Although included lyrics would have been a plus, they can be obtained from their website. Favorite tracks are "Capsella Bursa Pastoris" and "Scin". Get it! See them live if you can!
