Album Description
Kendel Carson - she's a name, voice and fiddler/violinist who will indeed be remembered from a first listen to Rearview Mirror Tears, her delightful and alluring debut album on Train Wreck Records, produced by Chip Taylor. Already a musical veteran at age 22, she's been capturing ears and wowing audiences across her native Canada and around the globe with her prodigious talent and luminescent aura since she joined her first musical group at nine years old.
So it's no surprise that Rearview Mirror Tears sounds like the assured work of a veteran artist, rich with an uncanny and winning familiarity, seducing listeners to spin it again and again. After all, it's the work of a true artistic natural whose soul is suffused with music, and then on Rearview Mirror Tears is paired with another equally musical soul, master songwriter Chip Taylor, composer of such indelible classics as "Wild Thing" and "Angel of the Morning" and éminence grise of Americana music and the contemporary folk-rock and singer-songwriter scenes.
It's a collaboration that at first glance may seem like a seasoned veteran mentoring a gifted protégé, but the album soon reveals something else at work that's even more vibrant and exciting. The way Carson inhabits the album's songs with a full, rich presence and stamps her identity into the music with her vocals and playing tells a different tale: An artistic union of two friends and kindred musical souls. There's a spirit and life that pervades Rearview Mirror Tears that can only come between two talents in prime form enjoying their creativity in full flow.
Carson was all but destined to make memorable music from birth. Growing up in Victoria, British Columbia, she began playing violin at the tender age of three. Carson ascended to the upper reaches of the Canadian classical music world while still young, appearing as a featured guest soloist with the Victoria Symphony and later joining the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
At the same time as she was achieving mastery as a violinist, Carson also became immersed in the vibrant Canadian folk scene as a fiddler, first with the BC Fiddle Orchestra and then with her brother Tyler as The Carsons, later to become the group Kid Carson. Her collaborative nature also later landed her in the Juno-winning roots music band The Paperboys, with whom she quickly became a notable member on their most recent album, The Road to Ellenside. Her duet with lead singer Tom Landa, "Fall Down With You," was the first video single from the disc and hit #4 on Canada's MuchMoreMusic video channel.
After first meeting her in 2004, Taylor began offering Carson long-distance encouragement and guidance in the months that followed. With Taylor in his most prolific and inspired state within an already prolific and inspired career, their creative alliance bloomed. By the time they hit the studio for a couple of days of recording in 2006, magic wasn't just in the air but in fact captured on the tracks they quickly laid down. On Rearview Mirror Tears, they create an album of music that feels like it was not just meant to be, but ready to emerge and capture the ears of the world at large. With an organic ambience of natural artistry in unfettered flow, the sessions became an album by an artist in first full flowering. Ranging with ease and engaging charm through a variety of roots music modes and emotional and musical moods, Rearview Mirror Tears is one of those exceptional creations that feels memorable and meaningful from its very first notes.
So even though Taylor wears such hats on Rearview Mirror Tears as producer, songwriter, singer and record label, his true role was ultimately encouraging Carson, a fellow talent and peer (despite any age difference), to become who she is and all that she is able to become. And as Taylor sees it, it's ultimately Carson's artistic capacities rather than his own that makes Rearview Mirror Tears all that it is. For Carson, her delectably winning debut album is one of those pivotal artistic and life lessons whose rewards will inform everything to come along her already lengthy and fulfilling musical journey that is sure to continue for some time to come.
Customer Reviews:
Great debut.......2007-06-10
Terrific debut album. Kendel has a nice soulful voice, and the instrumentals on this album don't drown it out. She does some up-tempo stuff as well as some excellent ballads. My favorite cut is Ribbons and Bows. I heard it on XM radio and had to hear more.

Album Description
Don McLean: Rearview Mirror includes both a CD and DVD that looks back at the breadth and scope of one of the 20th century's premier singer-songwriters. Serving as a one-of-a-kind retrospective for McLean's timeless body of work, Rearview Mirror includes rare and never-before-released recordings from his own personal archive, as well as, his biggest hits.
Featured is the original No. 1 smash version of "American Pie," one of the greatest pop songs of all time. Additional highlights include "Vincent," "Empty Chairs," "Crying," "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Love Me Tender." "And I Love You So" is performed with Nanci Griffith. It's the only duet Don ever recorded in his career. Don's brand new song, "Run Diana Run" is another stand-out. It finds Don writing as masterfully as ever.
Finally, Rearview Mirror includes a FREE bonus DVD that provides never before seen home video footage of McLean rehearsing with the legendary vocal group, The Jordanaires, for their annual Christmas Concert at Carnegie Hall in 1984. Also on the DVD is the video for "Headroom," the only video Don has ever made.
Rearview Mirror is a must have for Don McLean fans, but it also serves as an essential greatest hits collection, presenting a definitive career overview of one of American music's most distinguished and celebrated artists.

Rerview Mirror.......2006-03-12
Was really disappointed with this album. He needs to find something new that has the zip of Vincent, Crying & American Pie. Old artists may need to just fade away if they are just a bunch of old men strumming boring new stuff. Bought this album because of the 3 songs that I mentioned. None of the rest made me want to listen more than once.
Yet another Best Of?.......2005-11-30
Well, no it's not just another compilation, since the songs on it are largely not the original recordings we all know so well, and of course because there's a DVD this time.
The DVD first: this isn't quite as good as I expected, but it's nice enough. I doubt most will watch it more than once though. Mainly it's Don rehearsing with the Jordannaires. Then there are a couple of music videos that aren't particularly well done.
The CD has some stuff even die-hard collectors might not have come across. Like the first track, a really nice version of Gordon Lightfoot's 'If You Could Read My Mind'. 'TB Blues' is another good one.
But the rest are largely old ground, even if the versions aren't ones you'll have heard before, they're not that different. Some have been on other CDs. I was looking forward to hearing the newish 'Run Diana Run' but it turns out to be one of the worst on the album - it's done in the 'Headroom' style with a silly rock backing and no tune, just shouty, trite rhymes.
There's a long, rambling piece in the booklet from Joel Dorn that doesn't really add much to the story.
In terms of value, the DVD lifts this above the usual, but I was on the whole just a little disappointed.
A Gem for fans and new Fans.......2005-11-06
Trying to gather a collection of songs together that can truly give an impression of such a diverse artist like Don McLean is not easy. Grammy Award winning Producer Joel Dorn has done just that with Reaview Mirror. He's captured the wonderful vocalist and interpreter of Songs , the Solo live concert artist , the concert artist with full band and strings , the folk singer and the blues singer. Don McLean is all of these - he's also a cowboy and Dorn has included to fine examples of McLean in cowboy mode. This CD is a gem - as a bonus it includes McLean's new single from his upcoming originals CD - plus a bonus DVD - this is value and well worth the price - as the album has just been released I ould doubt the reviewer who claims to have found it in a clearance bin - and doubt he even listed to it. Buy it its great

I love these guys.......2005-06-19
This band started out like all other good bands, as a group of locals that loved music. They all went to college together and wrote and played in the off time, played local venues on the weekends, and we all loved them. I was suprised to see other reviews from all around the country on amazon, and figured I'd leave my peice here as well. I thought they had broken up, but apperantly they have just moved to the minnisoda area and i hope to have the chance to see them again in person. as every one else said, these guys are very talented and I would Love to see them make it big. good luck RVM, Iowa misses you.
A "must-own" Diamond in the Rough.......2004-10-30
Rearview Mirror is a blender mix of rock influences, a versatile prism of modern rock that reflects a wide range of styles.
Ptacek as a vocalist is amazing--the most talented relative unknown in the rock world. He brings great range, and a penchant for expression; anger, pain, sadness, lonliness and desperation come out in full force with lyrics like
"I'll watch you hang from the rafters /I'll watch you from beneath /'Cause today the world means nothing /Just hang and try not to think / Do you feel the blood and sweat pouring down / over your face now?" from "Dead Air" and
"...my fingertips / they bleed across the line / of these city walls cause all these lights look / like eyes to me / they're staring in / my filthy window is found to be / my only light / as this candle burns /... [this] is not the life / for which I asked / ....so vulnerable to all the pain / ...please take your shots / while I'm down here." from "City Walls"
"City Walls" is one of my top ten modern rock ballads, somewhere amongst "Bleed" by Cold and "Darkness" by Disturbed. "In the Beginning" is the token commercialized release, although even that is quite good. "All Lights Off" is hard to describe: uptempo yet insightful, introspective yet expressive, angry yet accepting. Hard-driving lead guitar riffs and a subtle bassline complement the crooning, sometimes soulful but always edgy vocals.
All Lights Off is the best CD that you've never heard of. A truly unique creative production, it breaks the mold of whining, cliched modern rock lyrics and riffs with something distinctly personal. Sure, it has its downfalls ("Guilty" is just terrible, and "Animal" is forced), but this CD will make it's way into most modern rock fans' stash of personal favorites.

Pretty good CD.......2004-02-15
I've been fortunate enough to have known about this band for time since I lived about fifteen minutes outside of Cresco while I was in High School. This album is really good, and I think everyone should give it a listen. But since this album's release, the band has gone through some tough times. I don't know exactly what happened, but somehow the band lost their record deal and drummer T.J. Krammer was either let go/fired or quit because of creative differences. At any rate, they have a new CD out that's pretty good, but it's a hard find since the band doesn't have the record deal anymore. If you are looking to buy, "All Lights Off" go ahead and do it. You won't regret it. However, consider buying their new self-titled album too. You can't get it here, but visit www.rvmonline.com and there will be a link to buy the record. It's different, but still really good. If you really like the band, they also have an older small time release entitled "Blown Out." I don't believe it's for sale anymore, but there's a site where you can download it for free. Just go to the forum on the official site and you'll find the link to Rearview Mirror source. Anyway, spread the word. This band is great, and they need your support.
This is a gem.......2003-10-03
I buy lots of CD's and I bought this one because someone said they sound a bit like Tool. I love Tool but I didn't expect much from Rearview Mirror. But WOW! This is one great CD. I can see their Tool influence in the intelligent lyrics, jack-hammer guitar, and strong vocals. These songs are solid from beginning to end. If you want to make a great discovery of the best band you have probably never heard of, buy this CD.
