In 1964, his first hit 10 years behind him, Porter Wagoner returned to his Ozark hometown, West Plains, Missouri, to play for the folks who'd literally been his family, friends, and neighbors. The down-home results (actually the better part of two concerts presented as one show) are a twangy, charming time capsule, capturing what country sounded like when it was still played in high school auditoriums and VFW halls. Besides Wagoner's poignant and plain-spoken readings of his own hits and old-timey standards, we get the whole revue: fiery instrumental spotlights; solo offerings from Wagoner's wonderful pre-Dolly "girl singer," Pretty Miss Norma Jean; and the corny-yet-hilarious comedy of bass player/comic Speck Rhodes. All of it is as entertaining and fast-paced as a Saturday evening in town. --David Cantwell
