Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Vintage and fabulous Clint Black.......2007-03-25
There's hardly a better song than "Put Yourself in My Shoes" to show off Clint Black's great vocals and harmonica playing. Then add "One More Payment" for great lyrics and "This Nightlife" for an upbeat driving song.
My entry point into country music.......2004-02-20
This is the album that introduced me to country music. A buddy of mine in the Navy insisted I give it a try. The stories Clint Black tells are exceptional. The word play in "One More Payment" is instantly accessible. I thought for years that the "hit song" on the album was "A Heart Like Mine." That song defined country music for me for almost a decade. Since my initial exposure I've gone on to enjoy more a bluegrass flavor (a la Dwight Yoakum) but I still return to this stunning album several times a year. It has stood the test of time, and is a true classic. If you're looking for an entry point into country music, this would be the album for you. Enjoy the word play, story telling, and musical virtuosity on display when you "put yourself in my shoes."
Good on It's Own.......2002-06-27
Clint Black's second CD is pretty good on it's own merits, but pales in comparison to his debut. The title song is terrific, and "Gulf of Mexico" is a beautiful ballad. Also on the plus side is the great traditional country sound - it's not the kind of boring, easy listening stuff that many country stars are recording today. However, most of the songs simply don't stand out in the same way as the hits on his debut CD did. Overall, a good country CD that will likely satisfy fans of Clint Black and more traditional country music.
Decent, But Disappointing Follow Up.......2001-10-13
This is a good album, but is definitley the least involving Clint Black album. There is no awful track here, but there is also no huge standout song either.
Put this one in the CD player.......2000-07-24
I've just ordered this CD after years of listening to the cassette. It is my favorite CD by Clint, the songs seem to flow from one right into the next. Be that as it may, I would buy this CD for the pure pleasure of listening to two of its tracks over and over, The Old Man, and The Goodnight-Loving Trail. When a song can again give me goosebumps after hearing it hundreds of times, it is for real. Wonderful CD to listen to while driving the back roads.

Born in Dundalk, Co. Louth, the Irish flute and whistle virtuoso, composer, singer, and educator Nuala Kennedy has mined inspiration from throughout the Celtic world. She began by playing in a ceilidh (dance) orchestra before moving to Scotland for a time, where she joined the critically-praised group, Fine Friday, and developed a strong affection for Canada's hardy, Gaelic-speaking Cape Breton traditions. Later collaborations have included gigs with The Unusual Suspects and Harem Scarem. She is affiliated with the popular trad band, Anam, and is a musician-in-residence at New York's Omi International Arts Center, where she and fifteen other composers of various nationalities are completing a work set to be premiered in August 2007. The New Shoes is not only the title track of this album but the name of her new band and on it, she explores her heritage while updating it with all-acoustic sounds, adding on an extra bit of swing and flair. With her pure, chilled-out mezzo-soprano and dulcet woodwind stylings, she plays a tune inspired by the sounds of Brittany (a Celtic homeland in western France), spins out soulful ballads, gets the house up off it and dancing and even borrows some chugging attitude from Django Reinhardt's Parisian le jazz hot. Fans of Lúnasa will surely love this one. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
A rare treat.......2007-06-05
Nuala Kennedy is a rare treat. And her first solo recording, "The New Shoes," is a marvel. It doesn't take long to listen and realize that Nuala doesn't have the potential to be one of the great masters of Irish flute playing -- she already is. Her music is graceful, sweetly nuanced and intricately arranged. It sounds organic and at ease, not at all glossy or overproduced.
Nuala doesn't strive, as so many young musicians do, to impress listeners with splash, volume and an overblown sense of her own cleverness; the music here is straighforward and relaxed and ineffably lovely. That she's also blessed with a beautiful, delicate voice is almost unfair. Nuala sings on several tracks, in both English and Gaelic, and it's a delight every time. The music lights on your shoulder and sings in your ear and, damn it, I was actually a little sad when duty called to put another CD in the stereo and give this one a rest.
People sometimes ask how I can listen to so much Irish music without ever growing tired of it. "The New Shoes" is a perfect reply.

Great gems from musicals that dissapeared.......2004-11-30
Songs from 1987's "Smile" make this well worth the price. The previously unreleased material from the late, great Howard Ashman deserves to have it's moment in the spotlight.
Also, there's Judy Kuhn's beautiful performance on "Starfish", Christine Baranski's vampy turn on "Sherry".
Finally, there's" New Words" from "One, Two, Three, Four, Five". This show has been restaged, by small theatre groups, under the title "History Loves Company". "New Words" is by far the best number of this show and Liz Callaway's voice fills with love as she sings this lullaby.
For a consummate musical theatre fan who's heard it all, this disc is a refreshing look at what has been lost over the years.
some gold mixed with dross.......2003-12-21
Some of these songs desrve to be unsung. But then you get a showstopper like Sherry and you wonder how could this show have flopped? That number alone makes this cd worth purchasing.I also enjoyed Marvin Hamlisch's toe tapping title song - Smile. There are also a few other lovely melodies which makes this cd a nice addition to a Broadway collection.

Black 47 is not only "New York's house band" but a work-in-progress. Their albums document the history, joys and frustrations the city's deeply connected yet antagonistic Irish immigrant and Irish-American communities and their equally colorful and fractious neighbors. The group's Wexford-born bandleader, Larry Kirwan also has a novel, Liverpool Fantasy, to his credit and now, a memoir called Green Suede Shoes : An Irish-American Odyssey. In it, he relates how the Catholic Church, the IRA and raging hormones drove him to embark upon a riotous American apprenticeship and form an iconic rock group. The simultaneously released "soundtrack" is peopled by characters like Kirwan's uncle, an atypically non-judgmental priest, Malachy McCourt, owner of the notorious Bells Of Hell bar and a bewildered Irish-American soldier, stuck in Baghdad and dreaming of home. These politically outspoken, hilarious, sexually-charged, bitter-sweet vignettes will intrigue new listeners but hit longtime fans like a Guiness-soaked madeleine. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting autobiographical work.......2007-02-22
I haven't read Kirwan's book so I can't review this as a soundtrack, but there are number of good cuts here.
"The History of Ireland Part I" is as succinct an effort to make sense of Ireland's troubled past as anything I've read or heard.
"The Bells of Hell" about Malachy McCourt's old watering hole is a fun journey into the past and a scene that makes me wish I was there.
"Uncle Jim" and his peace mission to the North is a classic. It's funny and poignant at the same time. A tough accomplishment.
These are the ones stand out for me, but the rest has value as well. Black 47 is a band that challenges and entertains. Not many can make that claim.
musically sound....vocally?.......2006-05-26
Ok I'm not real sure what I expected when I ordered this CD but what I got was something that I had a hard time listening to. The band muscially has wonderful arrangements. Good use of Sax and horns and strong guitars. out of all the songs on the CD the only one I could get through and say was ok was Uncle Jim. Sort of a reel feel to it. Downtown Baghdad Blues has good lyrics. My problem with the entire CD is the lead singer. I Personally think he tries to over sing the songs. Sounds to me like he is in pain. This is just my personal opinion. Others really enjoy this Cd. I didn't.
This album rocks.......2006-02-03
Downtown baghdad bluse is a song that says the wars is screwed up but they are behind the troops. This band takes time to get used to. They are so awesome live if you get the chance to see them. The band is a lot like guiness you either like them or don't. So if you want to try something new give them a shot. I am looking forward to seeing them again.
sounds like rocky horror show.......2005-10-23
I liked some of the songs such as Kilroy Was Here, and Life's Like That, Isn't It, but I think the rest sounded like the rocky horror picture show in vocals, and the lyrics in the other songs sound whiny. The background music was not so bad, but his voice is unmelodic with the music which unbalances the harmony and potential of the song.
Black 47 just keep getting better.......2005-06-05
I'm not a huge fan of re-issueing of old songs,
in most bands it makes me suspicious that perhaps the creative spark is gone.
Not so with Black47, I see enough of them live that I know for a fact the spark is burning brightly still.
I understand this disk was released in conjunction with Larry Kirwan's excellent book and some who have never heard the bands music need something that sums up thier years of music all in one place.
Maybe I'm just a glutton for thier music but the only possible fault (if you can call it that) I find with this album is that not all of the songs are new.
Not really that big of an issue tho,
Downtown Baghdad Blues is a good enough song to carry the whole album for me, and if the perfectly spectacular
Kilroy was Here, hooks new fans to the back catalog of Black47 music, that's enough to make it a 5 star album for me.
Good stuff for both old time fans and beginers as well.

One of My First Albums and STILL One Of My Favorites.......2003-01-02
I remember getting this album on LP during my sophomore year in high school, 1971. I was literally blown away by the infectious, jazzed-up, arrangements of popular tunes at the time as well as their own originals. I LOVED that big, southwest sound (now it's more PC to call it a Texas sound) that Wilton Felder was putting out on tenor and the R&B rhythms that Stix Hooper was laying down.
I didn't really think of this as fusion at the time - the jazz purists at my high school kind of eschewed my tastes for this stuff and Maynard Ferguson, but I didn't care - I liked it! This material was as much fusion as the outside CD's of the time - they just took R&B rhythms and voicings to the popular tunes and their own. At the time, there weren't a lot of people doing this with popular music, so I think it was innovative.
I never really was a fan of jazz trombone, or, really of two-horn jazz bands, but Felder and Wayne Henderson on trombine really carried it off. Joe Sample was the pianist. There were two guitarists credited, Arthur Adams and Freddie Robinson. There was no bass player credited. Felder played electric bass on some of their CD's and he might have done so here.
At this time, they were still called the Jazz Crusaders. They had started in the early 60s with a strong jazz combo tradition. They were moving more toward the soul-jazz/funk style, but did not have the slicker productions that they employed on their later albums, including Southern Comfort, one of my favorites.
I'm now listening to the CD version. When I saw that it was available, I JUMPED at it.
Most of the cuts tend to be driving, medium tempos, but there are several slower tunes, making a nice mix. My own favorites are Golden Slumbers and Felder's original, Way Back Home, and Thank You first recorded by Sly and the Family Stone. However, there are no bad cuts on this album at all. This CD is well represented in the band's retrospective CDs
The only con is that this is LP length - around 40 minutes. There were no bonus tracks added to the CD version.
Their best album.......2000-07-02
Back in the day, they were the Jazz Crusaders. Then, I suppose, to broaden their appeal, they became the Crusaders. Call them what you wish, but this was among the best music they ever made.
Joe Sample, Wilton Felder, Wayne Henderson and Stix Hooper made some bold, brassy music. The Crusaders were dominated by a strong horn section, which not only led way out in front, but also provided gentle smooth harmonies.
Old Socks/New Shoes has a fine mix: their renditions of classic works like "Golden Slumbers", "Rainy Night in Georgia" and "Thank You". They also put down their own signature tracks, like the classic "Way Back Home".
Wonderful jazz, regardless of the name.

Customer Reviews:
a perfect "power pop" band that most have never heard of.......2006-08-30
Shoes were a Chicago suburb D.I.Y. power pop band. They had a lot of talent but never made it.
This compilation is excellent especially if your a fan of Beatles, Rubinoos, Fountains of Wayne, Rasperies, Knack and all the other power pop favorites.
What makes the Shoes so good is that they were really good songwriters. There are a lot of songs on this compilation yet the tunes are different and not repetitive. If somebody with the proper business acumen ever were to get involved with this band they would have been much bigger.
It seems as though the band has a bigger fololwing today (b/c of all the power pop affecionados) then when they were around. The music has a real lasting quality and sounds fresh and contemporpary today.
If you are looking at the entry for the "Shoes" it means that you are really into music. Go ahead take a chance, be adventurous and try a listen for this wonderful band. Evey song is a quality tune. I wont tell you the highlights since nobody is familiar with the titles anyway.
This is classic jangly guitars, multi-part harmony songs.
What hampered their career probably also enhanced the music. This stuff has not been infuenced by any corporate interests and is purely the work of a young band following their own muse.
A marvelous collection of power pop love songs.......2006-01-05
More than any group of the past thirty years, The Shoes were the most passionate practitioners of rock and roll pop songs about love in the tradition of the early Beatles and the Raspberries. There albums without exceptions are about love between guys and gals. Each song focuses on an upcoming date, the hopes of requited love, the heartache of a relationship that has ended, the regret of things gone wrong. Virtually none deal with love in full bloom; the songs always deal with the hope of love that may be or the lost of love that was. In other words, the wongs deal with the most enduring of all human themes, our need for love.
Musically, these songs stand out for three things: great vocal harmonies (two of the members, Jeff and John Murphy, are brothers, and siblings always seem to blend especially well, and Gary Klebe sounded like their long lost brother), tremendous hooks, and guitars. Interestingly, though they chose in the late seventies, eighties, and nineties to write particularly untrendy tunes on unfashionable subjects, the Shoes were always popular with the critics. This is only just, for these are absolutely great pop songs.
Shoes's fans tend to fall into two camps: many regard their early BLACK VINYL SHOES as their best album, while others (of which I am a member) prefer their two masterpieces TONGUE TWISTER and PRESENT TENSE. The latter two were combined into a single CD, a twofer that for me stands comparison with Gram Parsons's G.P./GRIEVOUS ANGEL or Big Star's #1 RECORD/RADIO CITY. It remains the single best Shoes CD to find, though it is currently Out of Print. Wish List it here on Amazon and get the first copy that you see available.
Though BOOMERANG and SILHOUETTE were also fine albums (though I will admit to liking STOLEN WISHES more than most reviewers, with the heartbreaking "Torn in Two," one of my favorite cuts by the band, which I wish had made it onto this album), most of the great songs on this anthology come from PRESENT TENSE or TONGUE TWISTER. "Tomorrow Night," "Turnaround," "Karen," "She Satisfies," and my favorite "Too Late" all come from one of those. Although this album hardly exhausts all of their best work, it serves as a superb introduction to anyone wanting to sample their work.
Anyone who loves great power pop will love this album. If you adore the early Beatles or Big Star or the Raspberries, this is an album you absolutely must own.
Best of the Shoes.......2000-06-14
This CD is a must have for rock and roll fans who like to mix a little acoustical guitar with some electric up-tempo tunes. The songs "Too Late", "The Summer Rain, and "Tomorrow Night" will have you singing along even when your not playing the CD. Most the songs are typical "boy-girl" relationship themed that should remind anyone of the fun and emotions of early adulthood.
