Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Pikeville, Kentucky, native Patty Loveless has occasionally acknowledged her mountain-music roots on her frequently excellent albums of mainstream country. Hear, for instance, the pained, stoic version of Carter Stanley's "I'll Never Grow Tired of You" on Loveless's 1988 breakthrough, Honky Tonk Angel. Like too few of her 21st-century post-hillbilly peers could do, the singer makes Mountain Soul--an all-acoustic sampling of classics and a handful of new songs--far more than a nod to the style. Loveless's clear voice and sensitivity to narrative lyrics have made ballads her most fertile ground, and here she turns in as consistently affecting a disc as she's ever made. Whether offering a remake of Reno & Smiley's "I Know You're Married (But I Love You Still)," hard-country-influenced duets with Travis Tritt and Jon Randall ("Out of Control Raging Fire" and "Someone I Used to Know," respectively), or a rewritten "Soul of Constant Sorrow," she channels emotion in a straightforward way that could serve as a master class for many current vocalists. Even while celebrating a sound rooted in another time, though, Loveless takes an artistic chance or two: Darrell Scott's long, downbeat story song "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" isn't the record's best cut, but it's one of its most intriguing. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:
A real gem from Patty.......2007-06-30
The first two cuts on the album didn't move me too much (not that they were bad), but I really started to listen hard later in the album. Patty has THE voice for this kind of music. I almost got the feeling you could close your eyes and go back to the 1950's and you'd hear exactly this same sound and the same instruments. That song about Harlan, KY has a real haunting quality about it, and for me it's definitely one of my favorites. I had bought the album some time ago, listened to it and put it up, but I'm definitely enjoying it more the second time around.
Mountain high.......2007-05-14
In today's country music climate, it's a brave soul who issues a true-blue traditional Bluegrass and Gospel album. Patty Loveless dares and wins, triumphantly. This, her eleventh album, failed to get much airplay when released in 2001 (because it was so out of the mainstream) but was a moderate success anyway, and has maintained a steady following since. Quite simply, you'll love this album if it happens to be your 'kind of thing'. Listen to the samples and you'll know if it is or not. Come to think of it, given that used copies are now so cheap, why not give it a try even if you're not sure if it is your kind of thing? It might grow on you.
IPUTONANEWCOAT-KingsportTN.......2007-03-08
The service was great-the music was much better than I expected. The CD was ordered for one song, "Old Coat" but every song on the CD was enjoyable.
Bluegrass Soul.......2007-01-10
Patty has created a truly wonderful work in bluegrass style that is in my mind her true calling. Country may be more marketable so if she never does another bluegrass album I'll simply thank her for this one and wish her the best.
Patty at her best.......2006-11-29
When you do what you love it shows. I bought this before I went on a road trip through the Smokies (like how no trip through the Rockies can be done w/o a John Denver CD). I was pleasantly suprised and enjoyed it immensely. Patty's voice was made for this type of music.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

The Ike & Tina Era.......2006-06-27
This is some great music from a golden era. Funky and Nice!
Horribly dated.......2005-06-24
I like Ike and Tina. Well, I never met them, but I like their music. Great, tough, melodic soul and R&B.
I don't like Phil Spector, though. Never met him either, but just look at his hair...that's an evil man's hair. No, seriously. The Ike Turner-produced tracks here are pretty decent, although not among his best, but the Spector-stuff has been completely and utterly spoiled by overwhelming string arrangements, blaring horns, and the slickest production ever. Absolutely awful, the antithesis of grit (and soul for that matter).
Wall of sound indeed. Smack!
Phil Spector Brings The Best Out Of Ike and Tina.......2002-07-12
I'll be honest. The only reason I like this album is because of Phil Spector's contributions. I happen to think that Tina Turner is somewhat overrated, and I'll also point out that, "River Deep," is the only appearance she makes in my most impressive music collection. This album is Phil Spector's moment of glory. The Wall Of Sound he creates on here sounds as if it's about to explode through the headphones. He went for it all on this one, and although it was a bomb in the US commercially, it stands as one of the most successful pieces of pop art to come out of the 60s (and that's sayin' a lot).
Some unique tracks... not all Spector........2001-12-18
Other reviews will tell you how excellent this album is. I just want everyone to realise that the tracks were produced by Ike Turner, EXCEPT 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10 (produced by Phil Spector). 'Hold On Baby' is a good bit of Turner-Spector frenzy, and has only ever been issued on this album.
Ike & Tina and Spector stereo classic.......2001-11-20
This album is one of the most influential albums of all time and is a highlight of Phil Spector's career. A few of these songs: I Idolize You, A Fool In Love and It's Gonna Work Out Fine were hits when they were signed to the Sue label and the original versions are on the "Proud Mary: The Best of Ike & Tina Turner" compilation on EMI which is THE essential compilation of their hits spanning their entire career but with nothing from this album although that compilation does have an inferior remake of the title song from this album. The title track of course is the most essential track of the album but the rest of the album is as well produced as this album. I actually have another CD pressing of this album that features this album in stereo plus "Sonny Charles & The Checkmates, Ltd.'s "Love Is All We Have To Give" on CD in stereo, featuring "Black Pearl" as a Spanish import The Sonny Charles album is not available on CD otherwise. As mentioned in another review, all songs from this album that are on the Back To Mono boxed set are in mono, the stereo versions are great while I'll add that another mono copy of the title song is on Tina's "Simply The Best" compilation from 1989 on Capitol with her 1980's comeback hits.

Old tunes but still great material !!!.......2006-10-03
If you are actually reading this, then you must be a huge JB fan. I certainly am but of course, JB is just God's servant utilizing his God given talents.
I picked this up to see how it rates to his early 80s stuff. JB's talents are demonstrated throughout the entire CD.
Teh production quality is a little old but a number of tunes demonstrate JB's voice and guitar work. 2 tunes which I particularly enjoyed were Giver of Everything & I Worship Him.

In a world of maximum stress, this CD is a gold mine! Jeannette's flute takes you to a distant past in near time....A blending of gentle, soft music with nature...a real treat for the senses after a challenging day. The Native American flute is so beautiful!
Sacred Mountain, Native American Flute Music.......2001-06-23
Jeannette has a gift for setting nature to music. I commute to Salish-Kootenai College, an hour away from my home. This music is perfect for relaxing and commuting. I hope this is the first of many!
wonderful music for the soul.......2001-05-31
This Cd has so many wonderful, pleasing melodies and earth sounds that blend the Great Spirit with the Creation! My Salish brother starts it with a wonderful Bitterroot Salish language prayer, and the music that follows is comparable to the spirit of the People of the Bitterroot and all brothers elswhere. I've been told by many that this music is good for the soul, and for health... to take time to listen, and relax, because when you listen to this CD, it's ok to relax.
You'll want to play it again and again!.......2001-05-19
I'm very fond of the American Indian Music. We have several CD's in our collection. Jeannette Winter's Flute Music on this CD is awesome. It creates such a calm setting. I am an activity director at a lovely nursing home. We are playing this CD for our residents (and staff). We enjoy the background sounds Jeannette has selected to enhance her flute playing on the CD. Jeannette's music puts us in a gentle relaxed mood. Honestly, if you want to escape from a stressful day please play and enjoy this CD.
very inspirational.......2001-04-14
If you would like a way out of your everyday hectic, functional roles, this is the way to do it! Listen to the natural sounds of this cd and find yourself in peace and hope. There is more to life than paychecks, new cars and paying bills.... this CD conveys the hope that there is more. This CD is a vehicle to your own personal journey back home. I recommend it highly.

Album Description
This is an eclectic mix of music -- at times, blues, jazz, southern rock, country, funk & even folk. Often times it's a mixture of all these styles which makes up the sound of the music of Blue Mother Tupelo. There's something on this disc for everyone who loves music with soul. Great female/male vocal interplay and harmonies as well as outstanding guitar which all intermingles with sharp production. The musical journey on this disc will take you through the sounds and vibes of the American South while capturing life's experiences in its songs. This is truly a solid, wonderful album from beginning to end.
Customer Reviews:
Good get down music!.......2002-03-08
This is a great CD! I'm so happy that I ran across it here. The jams are tight & loose at the same time. Good swampy stuff and downright soulfull. I'll be keeping my eyes out for anything else Blue Mother Tupelo comes out with. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves music that jams with a southern Mississippi/swampy Louisiana/high lonesome Appalachian mountain combination. And their other CD rocks too ... I've got them both! What a band! 5 stars!!!!
I love it!!!!.......2001-10-04
What a refreshing CD! I really love the down & dirty grooves throughout this CD. All of the songs are powerful and full of emotion from beginning to end. This is a must-have CD for anyone who loves real downhome tunes from the blues to bluegrass - it makes you want to boogie as well as reflect on life itself. 5 stars indeed!!!!!

Increible!!!.......2006-12-13
COSMIC WIND (1977)
1. Belly Boggie (6.27)
2. The Bull (6.35)
3. Cosmic Wind (7.00)
4. Moon Trek (5.04)
5. Ain't Nothing To It (6.04)
6. Brazilian Lullaby (6.04)
7. I Love The Way You Move (4.17)
HIGH ON MAD MOUNTAIN (1979)
8. High On Mad Mountain (8.11)
9. Wonder Man (7.50)
10. Disco People (7.30)
11. Dragons Of Midnight (8.19)
Much better than we think.......2004-04-09
Both of these records are classics, but I have a real soft spot for the "Cosmic Wind" album. While "Mad Mountain" has tracks that are harder, "The Bull" and "I Love The Way You Move" are totally cool and absolutely essential. Former Motown player Dennis Coffey and Theodore himself but together a duo of great albums here, and we're lucky that the notoriously out of touch Westbound label actually allowed them to get reissued. The Tom Moulton mix on Cosmic doubles the price of admission, and are an absolute must for anyone who loves the Salsoul sound with a different twist..
The Peak for High On Mad Mountain.......2002-05-13
This is the best DISCO record made, but only for the 'High On Mad Mountain' album, 'Cosmic Winds' is weak, sure there are other so called disco could be better rated, the song and album 'That's Where The Happy People Go' by Trammps, 'The Glow Of Love' by Change, but this is DISCO, and the best of all the DETROIT type.
electrobumper.......2001-12-15
there are two albums on this cd. cosmic wind is from 1977, and i give it only 3 stars. it's a classic disco album, worth listening to. trouble is that the orchestra is to much dominant for my taste. i like my disco to be wicked, full of wha wha guitars and clavinets or synths. and that's where the second album on this cd enters the picture. the second album, high on mad mountain, from 1979 - is a true bumping funkster. this is hardcore wicked disco at it's best!!! i only wish that amazon would attach some sound samples, just so you can know what i'm talking about...

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.
