Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to "alternative" classical music!.......2007-02-19

It's wonderful to hear three such talented musicians put together a collection of non-classical music on revered instruments. This is not "The Yo-yo Ma Show" with two other guys! The music is varied but the performances are great and -- in some cases, e.g. Appalachia Waltz -- fantastic. I was driving the first time I heard the title piece and immediately started sobbing and had to pull over; it was that beautiful! This would be a good CD choice for children to listen to, as it gives a fine exposure to the amazing sounds that the three instruments can make when in the right hands.

5 out of 5 stars It's Yo-Yo so it's Exquisite.......2007-02-12

Yo-yo Ma has never been content to stick with the standard cello classics. Of course he has recorded the classics - the magnificent Bach Cello Suites (incredible and the visual DVD only enhances the effect), Vivaldi, Beethoven, Faure, Dvorak, etc. His evolution as an artist is an on-going process, thus there's Yo-Yo playing Tango (Astor Piazzolla), Yo-Yo playing Jazz (Claude Boling), Yo-yo playing Brazilian music or John Williams. And now we have the Apalachia Waltz, a beautiful, virtuoso and haunting piece.
I, too, found many of the sounds unique. For a real experience, listen in a darkened room with a pair of superior earphones - the things you pick up will shock. I literally turned my head several times, convinced that the artist was in the room.

As one reviewer noted, this is not supposed to be the rustic sound one might imagine or (the reverse) simply an intellectual exercise. The artist (with able assistance) seems to draw on some kind of inner reserve and literally pour his soul into his newest project. I, for one, applaud this widening of the boundaries between genres and hope that it continues.
Let's not forget the other artists, particularly Meyer. Many times the celebrity saps all the attention leaving a wake of sore feeling in their wake. Ma has always been one to give credit where credit is due and in this case it is due to those who ably assisted him. My grade - A

5 out of 5 stars Love it- great for weddings.......2007-01-24

I used this and Appalachian Journey for my wedding music. I used Track 2 (Appalachian Waltz) as my entry music. The rest I just had playing on a cd player as background music while my guests were waiting on me. It was perfect for our outdoor Fall wedding. Hearing track 2 always brings the memory of our beautiful day flooding back.

5 out of 5 stars Stellar album.......2006-11-10

This disc is top-notch in all respects. The playing is great by Ma and O'Conner for sure, but the bass work is awesome. Meyer is as good a player as there is in the world at the present time in my opinion. I am a cellist and bassist and find it difficult to believe that some of the things he does are possible. If you like top quality string playing, order this album today.

5 out of 5 stars **Superb**.......2006-07-19

I absolutely love this album -- the music resonates with one's soul. Even if you don't have a cello fetish as I, you can't go wrong with this album. It offers a wonderful range from adagio to allegro.....A true musical feast. I especially enjoy Butterfly's Day Out and First Impressions. Dolce...

Album Description

Frank's impressions have been heard on morning and drive time radio shows across the country. This CD is a compilation of Frank's radio improvisational comedic talent. From hearing sports caster Jim Rome announce his recipe for Bavarian Apple Tort, and John Madden making his usual obvious observations, to President Bush's turretic speeches, you won't believe Frank's wacky world of comedy!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedian.......2007-03-23

I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about, this cd is hillarious. If you don't like his impressions, don't buy the cd. But Frank is hillarious, especially with his Madden impressions, of course.

1 out of 5 stars What a Waste of My Money.......2004-11-20

I will admit my stupidity, I bought this CD without looking into what it was....This is a collection of 15 5 minute, free, half-assed bits done for morning radio at 7AM in front of ass-kissing radio hosts to promote the real comedy show Frank was in town for that weekend, and someone decided to put the free half-assed bits on a CD and sell it to us for $15, gee thanks....

Does anyone realize the bits just are not even that funny?....Just because a kiss-ass morning radio host laughs hysterically at your ranting in a goofy voice, does not make it truly funny....I understand Frank's "gem" is doing John Madden, but 15 extremely similar bits of John Madden on one CD? Who thought of this ridiculous idea?....

He does some good impressions, and sure, he throws in some other voices, like: Pat Summerall; Jim Rome (2 exact same *unfunny* skits of this guy); Adam Sandler; Rod Roddy; Robin Williams; Al Pacino; and some others, but these are all just thrown in for a matter of seconds before jumping back to his John Madden....

I am sure his standup routine could actually be pretty funny as long as it hopefully is not just regurgitations of the same Madden bits over and over, but this CD was the biggest waste of my money....

5 out of 5 stars clean and unpretentious... a pleasure to listen to.......2006-03-31

I have become very selective in the music I listen to. I will admit that I do have a wide range of music that I like and will listen to when I am in certain moods, but THIS is the kind of music that I will always come home to. It is clean and unpretentious and a pleasure to listen to.

Song of the Hills: Instrumental Impressions of America's Heartland is music that I am proud of. I realize there might be others who believe this music antiquated and boring... to that sentiment I would say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Another reviewer said it best when he wrote: "a genuine "Who's Who" of acoustic musicians -- have rendered these interpretations with great skill and love."

If traditional music resonates in your soul then Song of the Hills will be a worthwhile addition to your music collection.

Songs include:

Tom Bigbee Waltz - Jay Ungar/Molly Mason/John Sebastian
The Water Is Wide - John Doan/Brian Keane

5 out of 5 stars Exquisitely Beautiful.......2005-03-23

This is some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear. Top notch musicians Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Nancy Blake, Eric Weissberg, and John Sebastian play beautiful, spare, acoustic melodies that evoke America's rural and Appalachian past. The total effect is so lovely and authentic that the listener feels transported to a gentler time and place. The songs are perfectly sequenced so that the music seems to flow like an unrippled river. The mood is soothing and meditative. I've noticed that my two cats come into the room, curl up, and seem to listen when this CD is playing. I've listened to these melodies intently in a focused way. I've also just let them play in the background while doing other things. Either way, it works. There's not a wrong note on this album. My particular favorites are "The River is Wide", "Shenandoah", "Man of Constant Sorrow", and "Wagoner's Lad", which showcases John Sebastian's haunting harmonica. I give this CD two thumbs up, and my cats (Rum Tum and Geordie) give it four paws up!

5 out of 5 stars Song of the Hills.......2004-10-21

This album is really fine. The fiddle playing is excellent and the content of music is distinctly American. To all those folk music lovers this is really a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant album of evocative acoustic journeys.......2002-02-18

Recommended by a friend, this album has quickly become a treasure in my collection. It is a brilliant soundtrack for road trips when the early morning sun is rising above the dashboard and you're seeking wonderful music to carry you through the acoustic pastures and sensitive landscapes of your life. Rich in dynamics and sonic diversity, all 14 songs on this album are masterful in musicianship and artistic effect on the listener. Obviously, I believe you'd do right to invest in this album, put it on auto-repeat and let it carry you through your days for the next few months till you wear the recording out.

5 out of 5 stars If you want Folk, Appalachian,Celtic; this is it!.......2001-09-16

I like all types of music and folk is a fairly new interest of mine. On a trip to Ireland this summer I got very interested in Celtic music and traditional Irish Folk music. I bought a fist full of CDs in Ireland. None compare to this albumn. This is terrific. The moods cover the whole spectrum. Each piece has its own mood and they go from sad and meloncholy to toe-tapping excitement. The fiddles are fantastic. I can't say enough good about this albumn.

      Album Description

Midwestern composer Leo Sowerby's colorful and evocative symphonic poems can be heard for the first time on CD via a new Cedille Records release, the first in a two-disc series showcasing Sowerby's symphonic music for a new generation of listeners. This CD includes the picturesque orchestral suite From the Northland: Impressions of the Lake Superior Country; the lively "program overture" Comes Autumn Time; and two Carl Sandburg-inspired tone poems: the wryly rollicking, Bolero-like Theme in Yellow with its images of Halloween jack-o'-lanterns, and the remarkably vivid and inventive Prairie, the title track, widely considered to be Sowerby's finest orchestral work. Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians calls Sowerby a "remarkable American composer . . . eclectic in the positive sense of the word." Sowerby drew inspiration from American folk music, blues, and jazz, as well as traditional Western concert and sacred music, notes The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. In fact, Sowerby was one of the first serious composers to introduce elements of jazz into the larger musical forms. In 1938, the Musical Quarterly observed, "This 20th century American composes for the present as a part of it, and for the future perhaps even more than he realizes." From the Northland: Impressions of Lake Superior Country (1922) was inspired by a motor trip to the Canadian woods around Lakes Superior and Huron. Autumn was Sowerby's favorite season, and he was repeatedly attracted to autumnal themes and texts. Based on a Sandburg poem of the same name, Theme in Yellow (1937) received its premiere performance -- and until this world premiere recording, its only performance -- on a CBS Radio broadcast from New York, July 31, 1938, with the CBS Symphony conducted by Howard Barlow. Sowerby likely never heard the piece performed: he was overseas during the broadcast and later lost the score and parts. The CD uses a new score prepared by James Winfield of Chicago, who relied on Sowerby's uncommonly complete pencil sketch and compared it with air-check recordings of the 1938 broadcast. The disc's title track, Prairie (1929), was also based on a Sandburg poem. (The poet and composer were mutual admirers.) A 1934 Time magazine profile of Sowerby said the composer asks listeners to "imagine being alone in an Illinois cornfield . . . at peace and one with the beauty that is about."

William Lloyd Webber (1914-1982) was the father of Andrew and Julian Lloyd Weber. It's clear that musical ability ran/runs in that lineage!

As usual, Hyperion has released a well-performed and well-recorded CD. And the various works provide a very reasonable cross-section of this unsung composer's range and talent. According to the liner notes, William Lloyd Webber's "most prolific period as a composer was roughly the decade following the Second World War." The booklet likens his style to that of Delius and the French school. It is truly superb music meriting greater critical and public attention!
