Zez Confrey (1895-1971) may not be a household name, but his 1921 masterpiece "Kitten on the Keys" certainly is. The Illinois-born composer studied the classics growing up, but somehow the temptation of Vaudeville sneaked its way into his compositions and he found success writing catchy ragtime miniatures with goofy names ("Wise Cracker Suite," "Dizzy Fingers," "Blue Tornado"). Republic of Georgia pianist Eteri Andjaparidze performs 24 of Confrey's works with technical perfection and plenty of spirit--two requirements for these compositions--but sounds a tad robotic on some numbers. Between "Kitten" and 1959's "Fourth Dimension," Confrey explored blues, rags, Latin rhythms, and--of course--jazz, but the real highlight here is a slow number, the four-movement Moods of a New Yorker. In sum, this a great tribute featuring great music, perfect for fans of George Gershwin, Ferde Grofé, Jelly Roll Morton, and Joseph Lamb. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Oh, Kitten...it's a Must Have.......2004-12-29
Hats off to Naxos for releasing this absolutely perfect tribute to Zez Confrey - it was high time, someone had to do it, and Naxos has done Confrey real justice. One would expect caricature of his work, rather than the respectful, honest, accurate renditions of his work featured on this album.
I discovered my love for Confrey thanks to the Aeolian Hall Birth of Rhapsody in Blue album (another of my reviews covers that great one), which featured a small selection of his compositions. The distinct, unique sound of his work snagged me immediately, and so I was thrilled to come upon this little Naxos treat.
Every piece on the album is sheer delight, but several do stand out from the rest. "Kitten on the Keys" (Confrey's most famous composition, here done full justice), "Meandering" (which just glides and lilts along like feathers on a breeze), "Kinda Careless" (a sensuous, seductive little number), "Yokel Opus" (a snappy little foxtrot), "Coaxing the Piano" (which seems almost an homage to 'Twelfth Street Rag', in a skewed way), "Movie Ballet" (which sounds exactly like its title would suggest), and "Rhythm Venture" (so gracefully syncopated, it's practically a marvel).
Any and all Confrey and jazz fans should consider this album as required listening, and well worth owning. The price alone is reason enough - you cannot go wrong with Naxos' rates. But even if it were four times the price, it would still be a bargain.
Almost , Nearly, perfect.......2003-10-25
Wonderful selection of pieces, most of these are lesser-known Confrey and tend to represent his more "Serious" music. Perhaps because of that the pianist (a superb performer) tends to emphasize their concert qualities over their popular music aspects. This is only a tiny complaint. There's a lot of excellect music here, and at Naxos' low price it's a bargan.
Much more than Kitten On the Keys.......2002-05-16
If you thought an album of Zez Confrey music would be track after track like Dizzy Fingers or Kitten On the Keys, you are in a for a pleasant surprise with this superb CD.
The performances of the said party pieces are fast, furious and fun, but there are also some great blues renditions, and some lyrical, reflective pieces.
I would have preferred if the CD had included a few more of the well-known pieces like My Pet, Poor Buttermilk and You Tell 'Em, Ivories, but the many pieces I had never heard of are interesting, and are played beautifully.
Zany yet poetic!.......2000-09-04
Once again, in its "American Classics" series, Naxos has pulled a pleasant surprise rabbit out of the hat. Zez Confrey must be a new name for virtually everyone, unless they are well past my own age, and I don't go back quite that far. The name was certainly new for me, but a few of the pieces on this disc brought memories flooding back, most likely because my parents once had them coupled on an ancient 78 shellac.
Confrey (1895 - 1971) had been relegated pretty much to the dustbin of history before this release. But he did have his days in the sun between the two world wars. Undoubtedly his brightest moment was when he shared billing with George Gershwin and Paul Whiteman on the occasion of the premiere for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, where Confrey had the stage in the first half of the concert and Gershwin in the second. For the most part, after that February, 1924 "An Experiment in Modern Music" concert of Whiteman's, the paths of Gershwin and Confrey began to diverge; Gershwin was, to put it simply, an overnight success.
All of the music on this album is fun, and virtually all of it demands virtuosic pianistic ability, which Confrey must certainly have possessed. Listening to it is like taking a trip down memory lane, back to the popular music in the first third of the previous century. There are pieces which have clear roots in ragtime, embellished upon and brought forward by a few decades, and at least a selection or two which sound very much like Gershwin preludes in their "bluesy" feel. It's also clear that Confrey was not unaware of the classical music of the period, because a few of the pieces capture the idioms of the piano music of Rachmaninoff and Ravel of that period (although they soon veer off into "Confrey territory"). If you listen carefully, you'll even hear a passing reference or two to Chopin. But, like the Rachmaninoff and Ravel musical allusions, these too are in fact just "passing references."
But most of the album is pure Confrey-style pianistic wizardry: Fleet fingers, crossing hands, syncopations and rhythmic "irregularities" with the colorfully descriptive titles of "Meandering", "Coaxing the Piano" and "Stumbling." And his two most famous pieces (which, probably, many of us have never heard), "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers." (In fact, it was "Dizzy Fingers" and "Stumbling" which must have been the coupling on that ancient 78, because they were immediately recognizable.)
Eteri Andjaparidze is an excellent technician in this work, which can be very demanding of technique if it is to be pulled off properly. By and large, she does very well by it. In particular, she succeeds in capturing the passing allusions to the classical piano music of the time. If I had my druthers, I might ask for a little more panache, or insouciance, if you like, in the Confrey specialities noted in the previous paragraph. But who can quibble, especially at the Naxos price, without appearing to be a piker?
Neat stuff for a refreshing change of pace, with an opportunity to hear an hour's worth of music by someone who had been ignored for too long. That's a "get it" recommendation!
Bob Zeidler
Brilliant!.......2000-03-22
I have no idea what Jason Verlinde meant by saying that Eteri Andjaparidze sounds "a tad robotic" on certain pieces on her new Zez Confrey album; indeed, the Republic of Georgia pianist sounds absolutely marvelously free in her interpretations. I cannot hear anything "robotic" at all in her playing. She approaches the intricate syncopations of Confrey's music with dazzling style. She is technically proficient enough to take Confrey's tempi at a furious pace, when necessary, in pieces such as "Kitten on the Keys" and "Dizzy Fingers," and to create a sustained, beautiful flow to the music in such "impressionistic" pieces as "Sparkling Waters" and "Mighty Lackawana." The selections which will remind the listener of Art Deco New York in the 1920's and 1930's, are taken at exactly the right tempo, and Ms. Andjaparidze syncopates the rhythms in a sparkling manner. I was utterly amazed at how a pianist, trained in the Republic of Georgia, could evoke the rhythms and style of American music of this type. But she does! In addition, the piano has been recorded beautifully, with sparkling tone at the treble end, and a rich, full bass. I purchased this CD a few hours after reading Frank Behrens' review. It is a wonderful addition to my collection of American music. I urge you to hear this excellent release. Naxos is to be commended for making it available.

Don't believe the naysayers.......2005-04-01
There comes a time in a musician's career when they can choose to focus on thier technique and prowess at their instrument, or they can choose to use the skill they have gained to contribute to songwriting. Monte is on the latter path. This album is absolutely one of his finest, with each and every song being excellently crafted with thoughtful words and melodies. Monte began his career as a guitar prodigy, and there are many out there that wish he would just stick to noodling on the fretboard, producing as many notes as possible in the shortest period of time. While his technique is jaw-droppingly good, Monte has moved on and is now focused on writing songs. So for those looking for guitar acrobatics, this is not the album for you. But if you are interested in fantastically *written* songs with good melodies and excellent words, then I would highly recommend this album.
Waited a long time for this CD . . . .......2005-01-22
. . . but must sadly say I'm slightly disappointed in this offering. I guess I've been spoilt by the totally awesome "Mirror" CD, that I have constantly played since its release. The follow up "Wishing Well" was slightly inferior to "Mirror", but very good nonetheless. I feel this latest offering is a retrograde step, it doesn't offer (to me anyway) the innovative excitement of the performance that attracted me to Monte in the first place. For newbies interested in stunning guitar work, you MUST get the "Mirror" CD!!
Monte does it again.......2004-09-12
Monte Montgomery comes through again with his 5th studio album. Each new release offers something a little different, but retains enough of his unique musical stylings to create a respectable catalog. On 'The Story of Love', Monte refrains from most of the guitar pyrotechnics and offers up somewhat of a concept album. The concept being the ups downs and sideways of personal relationships. The vocals come through with passion and conviction, and the guitar playing is as mature as the singing. The experience shows. I recommend this CD, though no single album of his provides the whole picture. You should (and will) buy the others.
Different than past projects, but it grew on me quickly.......2004-04-25
This CD was not what I expected from Monte, but, as the songwriter and producer, I think he did a great job with this concept album. The music is interesting and diverse.
Worst Album Work Yet.......2004-03-23
I've been going to Monte shows and buying his gear and albums for over 15 years...all I can say about this album is "DISAPPOINTED!!!!"
This album is TOTALLY un-Monte...I don't know what the other two reviewers are smoking, but this album blows!
I wish I could find something good to say about this effort, but I just can't hear anything inspiring here.
Do yourself a favor and buy ANYTHING else he has to offer...you'll be glad you did. This effort is just not anything to brag about...he probably had to put out an album to fulfill some contract agreement.
Pick yourself back up again Monte and go back to kicking ass...more of this crap, and people will start saying "Monte who?"

The third Divinefire, perhaps their best........2007-02-25
Into a New Dimension is the third album by Divinefire, a band formed by Narnia vocalist Christian Rivel and the multi-instrumentalist Jani Stefanovic whose resume includes stints with bands such as the power metallers Essence of Sorrow, the blackened melodic metal of Crimson Moonlight, the superb thrash metal of Am I Blood, and Sins of Omission amongst others. All of the songs on this disc were written by Stefanovic, who handles the guitars, drums, keyboards, and backing growls on the album. The lyrics were once again written by vocalist Rivel and focus around Christian themes as before. The duo are complemented by Narnia bassist Andreas Olsson. Add to this trio a myriad of guests including the excellent guitar players Carl Johan Grimmark and Patrik Gardberg and you have a solid lineup.
The biggest difference between Into a New Dimension and the band's previous two albums is the superb production quality here. There is a lot of thought invested in the arrangements, which include both beautiful symphonic passages and well crafted lead solos. Stefanovic's keyboard playing is slightly less pronounced than before, but there are still certain songs that are entirely driven by his synth work. The opening and closing tracks both bring forth dark keyboards merging with pounding drums and melodic metal riffery. Rivel's aggressive power metal-styled vocals work quite well on the neoclassically driven "Passion & Fire", complete with constant double bass drums, speed metal guitars, and a fantastic lead solo by Carl Johan Grimmark. Grimmark plays leads pretty much on every song, but he also exchanges spots with others including Stefanovic himself. One of their strongest collaborations is "Time's Running Out", where the second lead solo is a great example of melody and power blended into a single theme.
Highlights include the dark title track and "All for One", both of which feature great contrasts of dynamics, allowing Riven to showcase his true talents as a singer. The slower parts implemented into the otherwise fast and energetic songs provide a great sense of balance, especially when backed by those cool, monk-like chants and Sonata Arctica-like atmospherics. "Alive" is another piece which contains mammoth riffing and a great bass lead used to underpin the perfect mix of clean and death vocals. Granted there are some extreme vocal stylings on the album, they are used sparingly and should not bother most power metal fans who dislike that type of vocals.
The Japanese import contains a bonus track called "Free Like an Eagle", which resembles more so Narnia and their earlier material, and is full of vocal hooks and catchy guitar melodies. The artwork is worth mentioning as well, as it credits each musician playing on the songs, which is sadly missing on many an album nowadays.
better than Dragonforce.......2007-02-17
This is the third in the Divinefire catalog and it distances itself from the european symphonic metal pack. It is speedy but not hyperfast as D force is, just for it's own sake. Christian Rivel, who sings for Narnia also, has added more aggression to the vocals and it is telling. Makes for a crunch that was a little lacking in the earlier music. They make use of more extreme death/black vocals that fits the overall mood of the album, and use keys to add flavor and spice. If you want a little more aggressive Sonata Artica or a Dragonforce with more grit this is the album. No filler found and a great metal piece.

One of the best............2001-10-11
Originally, I purchased this album in the early 70's and I have been searching for it on CD for years. Willie Bobo's rendition of "Yellow Days" is true to form. His remakes of this Guy's in love and the look of love capture the latin flair. I rate him right under Jobim the master himself!!!
For the true fan.......2000-06-14
This album is worth getting only if you are a true fan, like myself. The best song is "The look of love". other than that it's a just a collectable. I just wish i could get "dindi"on c.d.

THE album of the Century!!.......2006-07-08
This is the best metal album ever made, black metal or not. Trail of Tears are technically classified as Black Metal and while it is true that this is a black metal album, it contains dynamics only found in the best of the best. Songwriting is concrete and the harsh and clean vocals are blended perfectly with an accent on female vocals (very popular in the Black Metal genre). If you are going to get into Black Metal or just want a really heavy, hard hitting metal album, get this one. If you are only accustomed to "plain" heavy metal such as Metallica, Judas Priest and so on, then the harsh/black metal vocals may be a little much for you, but interestingly enough they do not stand out as they do on a lot of black metal albums. This is the definition of metal in it's broad terms.
I love it!!.......2003-07-22
This cd is VERY different from their debut. It is a very unusual transition. The vocals are much more black, instead of death, and the music is as well...but I REALLY like it a lot. I am in love with this type of music, and I think this is a great follow up. The new black metal influences flow VERY nicely in my opinion. And of course the new female vocals and clean male deserve much credit, it adds that beautiful contrast that makes this genre so compelling. This cd is kind of like Old Man's Child meets Dark Tranquillity....haha that was probably quite bold, but oh well! Anyhow, I like this cd a lot!
ear catching.......2002-12-11
one of the best albums i have heard this year, but it is a change compared to their previous work which was perfect. This album lacks Helena's vocals but Catherine did her part like a charm. As for the Male vocals there were many different changes but for the best(as i am more into black metal).Anyhow this is a must for any fan of the band.

Album Description
The piano of Peter Edwards sparkles and soars, inspired by the myriad beauties of our natural surroundings. Sweet melodies chase waterfall chords through green forests and billowing clouds. Pristine springs bubble up through cracks in the ancient rocks. The fleeting and the eternal meet in gently cascading harmonies. For focused listening, hints of Debussy echo behind smooth and intricate arpeggios. For background music, the ambience is nurturing and seductive. For modern times, the doors opened by Winston and Lanz are opened wider for meditative journeys away from time-clocks, pressures, and disturbing events, allowing time to reflect on the surrounding beauty, and revealing the Secret Oasis within our hearts. Three of the songs, including the title track "Secret Oasis", feature the accompaniment of San Francisco-based violinist extraordinaire, Anthony Blea.
Customer Reviews:
A little bit of heaven.......2002-09-02
I am listening to Peter's CD now as I write about his music. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Peter during the production of his CD, "Secret Oasis". His brother, John had shared some of Peter's songs with me, as the CD took shape. When Peter recorded his CD, I felt very lucky to get to meet him and developed a strong appreciation for his talent, dedication and the love he has for his music.
From the begining Peter's music brought forth for me, a visualization of his fingers and hands gliding over the keys in a wonderful seamless way. His music seems to flow like water moving along the path of life. Peter's music is very original. His own compositions, flowing from his wonderful rich inner world. He has the ability to transport the listener with him into wonderful light, loving, relaxing places that enrich the soul.
One of my favorite songs is "Caribbian Sunshower" . The music sparkles with warmth and joy, exuding a wonderful light dreamy ambiance. Often I play Peter's music when I really want to relax deeply and let the tensions of the day leave my body. "Stream of Healing Waters" is particularly wonderful for just lying back and closing my eyes, feeling the water flow all around me. It transports my senses to a place of serenity.
If, like me you like music that transports you out of the world of tension and stress and into a place of emotional beauty, spiritual warmth, floating gently on the waves of love, then I know you will love this very special CD.
Uplifting, meditative, reflective, lyrical, spiritual.......2002-08-29
Peter Edwards: Secret Oasis" grabs the listener from the first note, lifts the spirit of the listener to a place seldom offered by a music CD. I played Secret Oasis at my place of work and had people lined up at my door asking who the CD was by and where could they get it! 'Secret Oasis' provides a beautiful, meditative, reflective sanctuary for the listener; a welcome place to go and to help cope with the stresses of living in our world today
