California-born lead singer Heidi Newfield proves to be Trick Pony's real trick on the debut album from this brash, talented, and road-tested trio. She summons up growling, yelping, howling Janis Joplin-like intensity on tough-but-tender cuts like "On a Night Like This" and "Party of One." She even holds her own with guest vocalists Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash on Trick Pony's cool rockabilly reprise of Cash's "Big River." Newfield's compatriots Keith Burns (guitar and vocals) and Ira Dean (bass and vocals) are decent musicians, but when Newfield fades into the background on second-rate songs like "Just What I Do," "One in a Row," (two of eight songs cowritten by band members), and "Can't Say That on the Radio" the results are far less memorable. On raucous songs like "Pour Me" and "Spent" they indulge in the sort of flashy, aggressive, louder-is-better overkill that typifies far too many young, rowdy retro-rockabilly/honky-tonk bands. On the other hand, when Newfield sinks her emotional teeth into more inspired band compositions like the brassy but vulnerable "Every Other Memory" and the introspective "More Like Me" (which features some great three-part harmony arrangements), Trick Pony back up their youthful verve and abandon with some real heart and soul. --Bob Allen

one trick pony.......2007-04-10
the film was ok simon was good as the lead actor but the film although it was a road movie spent to much time literally on the road. Scene after scene of footage of the band in the tour van. The music however was top class. as an album its great late in the evening, jonah and how the heart approaches are all great songs
A Lot of Dynamic Energy, Movement and Easy Moments.......2006-06-27
I really enjoy this album. I like Paul Simon's voice and delivery quite a bit. This medley of integrated melodic Rock and Jazz rhythms on these songs is pretty catchy and has a distinct sound all their own. There is a lot of movement here on some of these songs. "Late In The Evening" rocks and stills blow me away. "One-Trick Pony" and "Ace In The Hole" are just so cool. "How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns" is such tender and melancholic jazz. This is one of my favorite Paul Simon albums and it certainly has transcended the test of time. I always found it amusing that this was a soundtrack to his film but I cannot even remember the film any more. However, the songs still endearingly linger. I suppose it is good to have the extra tracks and this is the Compact Disc currently available but I still enjoy listening to my LP of the original release of the album.
Quiet, Thoughtful, and Suprisingly Expressive.......2005-02-22
This album is a sleeper: one rarely goes to One Trick Pony when a Paul Simon mood hits you; certainly his first solo album stands as a testament to his songwriting abilities, and the many hits along the way often draw you to other albums in his catalogue.
But One Trick Pony really stands the test of time: tasteful, beautiful songwriting, a clear, effective concept album sustained through song after song, and superior songcraft and performances (jazz guitarist Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, drummer Steve Gadd) add an organic, naturally high level of sophistication to the arrangements. Some of the album tracks buried in here are among Simon's finest: "Jonah" is a great track, crying out to be covered again and revived by another artist; the closer "Long Long Day" perfectly captures the mood and feel of the album, "God Bless the Absentee" tastefully describes the drudgery and toil of the working man, sacrificing, putting in time for his family and a dream.
If you were put off by the rather weak film, or have not picked this up lately, you will be surprised. It takes active listening, but there are many rewards here to be found, and you will find yourself returning to the quiet joys of One Trick Pony.
Underrated, understated, and sophisticated.......2004-10-31
After years of success in the folk-pop genre with Garfunkel and his own solo career, Paul Simon decided to get into acting. Bad move. I saw One Trick Pony in the theater and on video. As a movie, despite some very nice little scenes and live performances, it drags. Honestly, it is a little depressing.
However, the songs written for the movie are another matter entirely. Paul Simon took some study in musical composition, and this began to bear fruit in Still Crazy After All These Years and One Trick Pony. Everything here is pop music at the highest level, tinged with a bit of jazz -- the presence of jazz guitarist Eric Gale and keyboardist Richard Tee, the ultra-clean and always innovative drumming of Steve Gadd are an essential part of the superb mix. But the songs are heavenly, melodic, meaningful, poetic, mostly meditative, and well-crafted.
I'd have to say this is my favorite Paul Simon album. Others come close -- Still Crazy, and Rhythm of the Saints. I find this one the most consistent and most worthy of repeated listening. (Not counting the bonus tracks, which may be nice to have, but do not fit in with the original album as a whole. Most of the time you'll want to skip the bonus cuts.)
His best album concept, start to finish........2004-08-24
Never saw the film, but from the moment I purchased this album new in 1980 it has always been one of my favorite LPs. The effervescent first track, "Late in the Evening," is both descriptive and not, for "One Trick Pony" is a late-in-the-evening kind of record, but one you'll remember less for its three upbeat numbers than for its seven mellow session tracks performed with a terrific ensemble and some of Rhymin' Simon's most soulful writing this side of "Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War." Indeed, I rarely play it before midnight anymore, and I sometimes sing the lyrics with Paul as a sort of late-night meditation. You purchase the Rhino version with the bonus tracks at your own risk, for the 10 tracks on the original are so complete, so satisfying taken as a whole, that I see no need to tamper with them.

What a rocker!!.......2006-07-31
With the California born lead vocals from Heidi Newfield, and fellow band mates Keith Burns and Ira dean, This debut album is a rocker!! "POUR ME" tells the bartender to fill it up one more time after her man leaves. "PARTY OF ONE" at your table for two, tells how you're waiting on me like I've waited on you. "BIG RIVER" the late great Johnny Cash tune, was beautifully belted out by Heidi, with Keith, Ira, and a little help from some late great musician friends Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. 'JUST WHAT I DO" tells a tale of Jessie James, The Wright brothers, and famous painter Pablo Picaso, when they
"didn't get any." "ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS" daddy's warning to his little girl, but she has plans of her own. rounds out this Lil' debute rocker from Heidi, Keith and Ira. TRICK PONY is a must buy for all you T.P. fans and for all you newcomers looking for something different and very unique!! You definately won't be disappointed!!
Love this album.......2006-03-31
This is a great debut album. But then I don't claim to be the be all end all expert on country music, I just listen to be entertained and this album not only entertains, it rocks.
VERY underrated group.......2005-02-27
I had this CD for a couple months before I really listened to it closely. I don't think I've heard a better debut CD in quite some time. Heidi has a voice that ranks up there with Trisha, Martina, (okay, maybe not Martina) and Shania. The CD has a little bit of everything-ballads, good old-fashioned country drinkin' songs, and some very catchy hard-driving tunes. I especially like "More Like Me," "Stay in This Moment" and "Spent," but the highlight of the album is "Party of One." This is a must have for country music fans.
They're a Hit!.......2004-06-19
How could anyone resist the wonderful tones of Trick Pony? And unlike lots of other artists who are in for looks and such, these people went through a real competition. I was there when they had the final round to get where they are today, and I loved it! They sound just as great, if not better, in person! My mom very well might have been the last person to speak to them before they won.
Just hearing these songs gives me chills. Their voices are given a hundred percent towards everything, and it really is a great album. They're a hard working group with fun lyrics for everyone to enjoy.
Really Good.......2003-06-20
This is a really enjoyable CD. Not your usual mainstream country stuff. Its full of energy.
That lady has an excellent voice. Besides one or two average songs the rest are really quality stuff.

Trick Pony's third album finds them musically more varied and adventurous--covering Los Lonely Boys' "Senorita" and Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache," and inviting Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish aboard the soulful "Sad City." But the band still suffers an identity crisis--whether to be a serious musical ensemble/honky-tonk presence under the lead of Keith Burns and Heidi Newfield, or to let the insufferable Ira Dean prank them into a crazy, fun-loving video band--that brands them as lightweights. And it doesn't help that they insist that R.I.D.E. stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment," or that they sprinkle inane sound bites from George Jones between a couple of songs. That said, Newfield still belts a fine, honkin' attitude number ("Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey on You"), and knows how to wring the emotion out of a heartbreak ballad ("When I Fall")--and Burns is both an affecting songwriter and occasional lead vocalist. Yet in the end, there's a desperation about this record, seen in the inclusion of 14 tracks when they should have gone lean, and in their inviting a plethora of big names (particularly Kris Kristofferson) to add legitimacy. How long these Ponies can continue to learn new tricks remains to be seen. --Alanna Nash

R.I.D.E........2006-08-15
It is modern country. It is not my favourite music but "Trick Pony" has some very good songs. She is a MUST in a country music collection.
R.I.D.E. ON!!.......2006-07-31
R.I.D.E. (Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment) is what they refer themselves as, on this album. Track 1- Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey" has many top notch artist helping Heidi, Keith, and Ira, with vocals(Tanya Tucker, being one of them.)
"IT'S A HEARTACHE" the remake of Bonnie Tyler's song. Although Bonnie's version is a bit more raspier in vocals, TRICK PONY does add a few raspy vocals here and there, with a few nitches of their own, which makes T.P.'s version good and unique!! "I DIDN'T" is what I call a "men bashing" song. Just a few differences of opinions between man and woman. "THE BRIDE" another great song from T.P. "SENORITA" a remake of the Los Lonely Boys tune. "HILLBILLY RICH" talks about a redneck livin' rich. (now if that isn't ironic.) And last but not ever the least the 14th track.. "MARYANN'S SONG" a very loving tribute to Heidi's deceased mother, narrated by the talanted Kris Kristofferson. This CD R.I.D.E. is new, fresh and R.I.D.E. on!! Keep up the great work T.P.
A few inches shy...........2006-03-31
I quite enjoy this album for the most part, with the exception of one or two tracks that I usually just skip. As an avid Trick Pony fan I'm satisfied with this album and play it often but they may have missed a step or two in comparison with the first two albums.
WOW!.......2006-02-15
WOW! This has got to be one of the best country albums I've listened to in a long long time. TP's honky tonk style never lets up throughout every song. I enjoyed this album so much I purchased TP's other 2 and enjoy them just as much. I highly recommend TP to anyone looking for a unique and refreshing sound in country music. This album is excellent. Enjoy!
Its about time..........2005-09-24
Yes, this CD has finally come out...its about time! It seems we waited forever for this outstanding new disc from Heidi and the boys! I love this disc! I bought it 2 days ago and it hasn't left my CD player yet! The remake of Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache" with Heidi's voice sent chills down my spine. "When I Fall" is a classic Trick Pony ballad. Heidi's bluntness is definitely shown on "I Didn't". The other remake of the Los Lonely Boys "Seniorita" was totally unexpected, but great! But, I think the best song and my personal favorite is "Stand In the Middle of Texas". Oh...my...gosh...totally unbelievable! It is classic country with a twist in my opinion. It is definitely the biggest highlight on this new disc. "Stand In the Middle of Texas" is a track that'll be played in every honky tonk from coast to coast after one in the morning after everybody's left the bar. It is the "tear in my beer" song on the album. I would almost venture to say this would be Trick Pony's "Where Would You Be" song on the album! If Trick Pony doesn't receive a CMA for something on this disc there's a problem.

This fiery young trio's big trump card is foxy lead singer Heidi Newfield, who growls, rasps, and vamps in the hard-rockin' country tradition of half-forgotten divas like Lacy J. Dalton and Paulette Carlson of Highway 101. On their sophomore album, Newfield and the boys--former Nashville sidemen Keith Burns and Ira Dean--are masterfully, if a little too resolutely, devoted to the hard-slammin', party-all-the-time paradigm. Yet they ease into convincing soulfulness on ballads like "Rain," "Love Be Still," and "Leavin' Seems to Be the Goin' Thing." Newfield really struts her vocal prowess and ably holds her own as she duets with guest Willie Nelson on a loud and rowdy reprise of Nelson's "Whiskey River." --Bob Allen
Customer Reviews:
Great CD!.......2006-03-31
I love this second effort by Trick Pony. Love Is a Ball is one of my favorites on the album and on my Ipod for that matter. But then I'm not under the assumption that every song on an album has to be as deep as the ocean.
TRICK PONY MISSION.......2005-09-23
Although this was a sophmore album for the group and reportedly thrown together, overall I believe it to be the group's best album.
Mission half complete.......2004-05-10
Easy listening country-pop but not as good as the first album. The duet with Willy Nelson is ordinary at best but what were they thinking when they recorded "Love Is A Ball"? I haven't heard worse lyrics in a long time.
Awesome cd.......2003-10-05
This cd by Trick Pony Rocks! they combie the styles of old and new to their singig, Heidi's voice is great and really makes the songs! They also sing a song with Willie Nelson in here. I like how they sing with older country legends like the late Waylon Jennings and Johny cash in their first album. If you have the first album you have to get this one. I love how theres a change in songs like some are fast pace like "On a Mission", "Fast Horse", "Love is a Ball". Then there are slower songs and some which have meaning behind it like Ira's song the Devil In Me".
I saw them in concert this smumer and Keith, Ira and Heidi really know how to put ona show. They mentioned during the concert that they are almost done with their 3rd album. I canot wait to get it. There isn't one song of theirs oneither album that I don;t like. If you want a cd that rocks you should pick up On A Mission and thier 1st album if you do noyt have it yet. Trick Pony rocks!
Another good time album from Heidi and the boys.......2003-08-16
This is a reminder of the kind of music with which Highway 101 shook up Nashville in the late eighties, Trick Pony are not quite as good as Paulette and the boys were, but they still have a lot going for them and should not be ignored.
This is their second album and follows the style of the first. Generally, I like them best on the rocking up-tempo songs although there are some fine slow and mid-tempo songs here. As on their debut album, they begin this set with a rocking, drinking song - this time it's On a mission. Among the other highlights is a cover of Whiskey river, on which its originator, Willie Nelson, guests as a duet singer.
On a few songs (Love is a ball, Leaving seems to be the going thing, The devil and me), one of the men sings lead, but the style remains the same. Trick Pony are one of the more exciting contemporary country acts around. Let's hope they are able to deliver a few more albums like their first two.

Blues as only Simon could perform them.......2005-09-10
Great CD by Paul Simon. Ace in the Hole and Late in the Evening are simply rockin blues. One Trick Pony is also a cool Simonized tune. Several great jazzy blues also inhabit this CD - Jonah, Belvedere Hotel and God Bless the Absentee to name a couple also have great lyrics. Great album to just sit back and listen to with no distractions.
Simon gets you in the mood.......2005-08-12
Besides Simon and Garfunkel, this was my first solo Paul Simon album. It's a gem. It's mellow, jazzy and every track is a night track - ie. great to play while chilling out with friends. The CD also comes with extra tracks.
Paul Simon's Warner Bros. debut.......2005-03-30
Paul Simon didn't last long as a movie star but he continues to flourish as a musician. He had the starring role in the 1980 film of the same title and performed and wrote at least most of the tracks on this soundtrack album. The film was distributed by Warner Bros. Also,it is possible that this led to Simon personally revoking his final contract with Columbia Records. The only Top 20 hits from this album include the title track and LATE IN THE EVENING. Hollywood dropped Simon after this film since it was a box office disappointment. However, many of Simon's fans loved the film. LITE would later be recorded live for THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK with Art Garfunkel, the follow-up to this album. The other songs are good.
A Great Paul Simon Album!.......2004-10-10
Jazz and fusion,as you might notice are ammong my favorite music styles. But I've always enjoyed Paul Simon's
witty, reflective songwriting and lyricism. And on 'One Trick Pony'
Simon incorperates both of these quality's into his music.
"Late In The Evening" ha a bouncy latin feel to the arrangement
while "Ace In The Hole" and the spunky title song are about as
close to funky fusion as Paul Simon will likely ever come and I
must say;it's a great fit.On the more typical side "That's Why God Made Movies","Oh Marion","Nobody" and just about everything
else on this album is stripped back, light textures and very much
in the typical Simon style-featuring the crack musical backup of
Eric Gale,Richard Tee and Hugh McCracken who's backing, without
sounding crass,is the most appropriate they could possibly use
on a New York singer-songwriters album. One of Simon's finer works.

Although one song doesn't make a singer, Heidi Newfield, Trick Pony's lead vocalist, seems to have that bit of an edge to her voice that elevates her from the all too common, just another pretty face with a decent voice, to the real thing--the real thing in her case being a voice that brings to mind a combination of the soulfulness of a Bonnie Raitt, the raw energy of a Melissa Etheridge, and a touch of the sheer beauty of a Mary Chapin Carpenter. Although country is her music of choice, she sounds as though she has the capability to venture into a variety of musical directions. For our sake, let's hope that she and the band explore them all.
Trick Pony -Pour Me.......2000-12-23
THIS BAND HAS WHAT IT TAKES . VERY "HIGH ENERGY" . CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THEM IN CONCERT ! I THINK THEY HAVE A VERY GOOD CHANCE TO CROSS OVER TO THE POP CHARTS ALSO .
