Opening with the methodical, hard-rocking "Cinnamon Girl"--still one of the singer-songwriter's most-hollered requests in concert--Young's second solo album introduces the cockeyed harmonies and sloppy, chiming guitars of Crazy Horse. His wide swings from soft-spoken country-folk ("Round & Round [It Won't Be Long]") to menacing metal (the punch line to "Down by the River" is "I shot my baby") indicate the multiple personalities in Young's future. His second album of 1969 broadcasts a sincere passion for the peace-and-love '60s (dig the long guitar solos) but also predicts the dark introspection of "Tonight's the Night." --Steve Knopper

The sound quality did not sound as good as my old album.

5 out of 5 stars a suggestion.......2007-05-30

You know what i think would be great?
If they gave this album one of those "Deluxe Edition" jobs like they've
done with so many others such as the first Weezer album and Blind Faith and on and on. Out-takes,demo's,alternate takes/mix's....it would all be catnip to the millions who love this album.
Actually, now that i think of it....if a "Deluxe Edition" job isn't possible, they could make a nice pairing of this along with the Neil and Crazy Horse at The Fillmore 1970 CD. That would be pretty deluxe!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic----Everybody Knows.......2007-05-14

While sniffing around in the wine cellar, I looked into my considerable archive of music and this one, inexplicably, shuffled it's way off the shelf into my bony hands. Some people say that it's Universal Force and Enlightenment that did it. I suspect Guido from the empty bottles. In any event- it is an excellent choice.
What can one say about this album? Neil Young expanded beyond Buffalo Springfield with this one and, I think, came into his own as a considerable artist in his own right. With Crazy Horse, he examined and extended his creativity with pastoral landscapes, jagged-edged cliffs, outerworldly musings, and just plain country meets city sensibility. Not that it always makes sense, but that people is the magic of music. Interpretation is up to you, not the artist.
Even now, I am awed by the consistency Neil displays so early in his solo career. We are never relaxed, for one moment, that the sequence of songs will resemble sameness in any shape or form. It begins with "Cinnamon Girl" which, in some way, reveals the dilemma that many young people have a problem with. That is the in-between phase of being a child and adult. He wants to spend his life with her, but then again, "Ma, send me money". The need to be free but not quite there yet. This theme reveals itself in many of his tunes. It is a slow rocker but with such a memorable riff. Next up "Everybody Knows", a jumpy, sprightly groove that, again, reveals where he's at - between a dream and reality- essentially nowhere.
"Round and Round" is a slow acoustic sadness that, I feel at least, is about loss. A loss of yourself? Or perhaps someone close. "Down By the River", aside from allowing Neil to stretch his jagged lead guitar, proposes another dilemma for the astute listener. The protagonist is lead to possibilities with this woman - but is her non-compliance a reason to shoot her? Down by the River? An enigmatic song at best and I dare not ask Neil the meaning.
We then get to "The Losing End" which reveals an easy-going country groove with some electric guitars helping it along. The theme? Good ol' country heartache. A mainstay in that genre - now and always. The mood then changes, into some outerworldly, ethereal regret and deception. This song reveals a darkness of the mind, and this is brought forth so effectively with the inclusion of violins. An eerie offering, but so very different.
"Cowgirl in the Sand", I think, is one of Neil's most potent songs. It can be taken on many levels. It is hard drivin' (but, it takes on a whole new perspective if you heard him do the acoustic version). Neil pleads with her to stay in her company. But, her place of command is the desert. Desolation. And, this song tries, desperately, to make her see her worth. Neil knows she is a beauty. She feels she is "purple words on a gray background". I feel that this song is an aching plea. It also allows Neil to experiment with lead guitar breaks, gritty and rough and insistent on it's purpose. In all, a brilliant conclusion to a brilliant album.
This album (plus the next two- After the Gold Rush and Harvest) complete the superb triumvirate of Neil's early career. As we know now, he was to go on to more creative terrain. Some of it successful, some of it not so. In any event, plain and simple, he is an amazing artist and, I think, one of the greats in popular music.
This one is definitely a classic and well worth the investment.
Now - if only Guido would replenish my bottles!

5 out of 5 stars an absolute rock and roll classic........2007-03-30

"tonight's the night" is my favorite neil young album. what's number two, though? "on the beach," "after the gold rush," or "everybody knows this is nowhere." hard to choose from those three great albums. might be "everybody knows..." though. such great songs. such stunning performances. "down by the river" and "cowgirl in the sand" have some of the most originally stunning guitar jams in the history of rock and roll. and the first of those two songs is simply about as haunting a piece of work as you will find in all of the rock and roll canon. "cinnamon girl," with its power chords and great melody is another classic. the whole album is just outrageously fantastic. don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent early record.......2007-03-18

This is really one of Neil Young's most interesting albums. I love the two lengthy jams the most- lots of emotion in the guitar playing and the mood. "cinnamon girl" is probably overplayed, and the crunchy guitar riff never did a whole lot for me, but the title song and the rest of the album stand mighty proud as distinct tunes that will immediately take you back to the late 60's. Enjoy it. I wonder if Neil Young knew at the time that this album would still be remembered and praised nearly 40, yes that's right *40* years later.

The 10 original tracks on the album, 5 written by Amy, showcase her moody distillation of traditional country, artful rock and cool jazz that shatters the expectations of the genres.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Voice like a Nightingale.......2007-05-17

I love Amy LaVere's voice, well what's not to love? For a tiny thing, she commands a mighty prescence. Dressed in calico and cotton, she holds onto a bass that seems twice her size, until she sings. Her voice carries through the cavern air of din and warren, drifting over the rhythm of stretched skin and steel to caress grateful tympanum.

A thousand years from now alien-human hybrid clone archeologists will look across the vast landscape that was America and imagine the last millenium of growth with congested cities, twisted highways with concrete covering almost every concievable inch of green earth and wonder: what did the land look like?
What were the people like? Who were these ancient Americans? What did the landscape look like to them? Verdant valleys and golden fields, stretching to the horizon, dotted only by blue lakes and crossed by rivers and streams...

Somewhere the song of the nightingale will drift on the wind and take them back to this ancient beautiful land...

5 out of 5 stars YOU WANT THIS ALBUM.......2006-05-27

This album is fantastic! It is such a relief to find a fresh, new sound with all the canned, drum machine, mixed stuff out right now. I met her in TN (she's really sweet) and purchased the album from her and lost it. Quickly, I found I missed it in my collection so bought another. Amy has recorded a great album that nicely blends the blues, country and jazz. What an amazing sound that is perfect for any setting. Her voice transfers the depth of the lyrics and the songs are relatable. The song choices range from the deep (This World is Not My Own) to the whimsy (Sailing??)and it is a purchase I encourage any music fan to make. Best album I've purchased in years.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Surprise.......2006-05-13

I find myself listening to this one over and over.

I love her voice--somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Kasey Chambers--and the accompanying music adds a dimension often missed by other artists in that it truly complements rather than competes with the vocal.

I was not familiar with this artist until being drawn to the lovely cover art and deciding to take a chance. Glad I did.

Unfortunately, I ordered "This Is Americana" and the CD inside the jacket did not match what I ordered. I received the CD for "This Is Americana 2" inside a "This Is Americana" jacket.

5 out of 5 stars A Killer Collection.......2007-02-12

A great collection of songs that will whet your appetite. I bought this sampler disc and have since purchased two of the artists' discs. Priced from $0.50 used and $2 new, its a real steal. Especially fine contributions from Danny Barnes, Rosanne Cash (f Johnny), Anne McCue, plus some delightful lighter, fun songs from Jim Lauderdale and Junior Brown. Grab it. You'll be glad you did!

2 out of 5 stars Nashville's attempt at alt-country.......2005-10-17

As soul-less a compilation of alt-country as I've come across..."This is Americana" (or at least how Nashville supposedly has defined it) rarely gets off the ground. The few good songs on here get dragged down by annoying filler.

There are several grievous offenders: Trashcan Tomcat & Life in the Country feature melodies you'll wish you could get out of your head; Jr. Brown thinks he's being original w/Little Red Airhead (a new take on blond jokes) but the quasi-anthem "Stupid" just may be the worst song ever recorded to tape...a combination of insipid lyrics w/great production values. If Altman were to remake his Nashville movie today, this could be the opening track. If you're going to make an anthem, at least come up w/something worth being anthemic about!

In Nashville, a good PR man takes precedence over talent & originality & several of these selections are a testament to that. The fluff filled writeups in the booklet add even more evidence to what's wrong w/this CD. Yes there's decent material here from Willie, Cash, Shelby & the Jayhawks & hence the two stars. Just keep a finger on the skip button.

1 out of 5 stars EXCUSE ME, BUT WHERE ARE.......2005-09-04

Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, Bernie Leadon, Steve Young, the Woodys and even Burrito Deluxe?

Seems that whoever compiled this recording chose to do the usual thing that Nashville unfortunately is so well-known for - ignore and delete the stellar contributions of those who helped to propel Americana music or Alt-Country, namely those California Country Rocking boys who influenced the Marty Stuarts, the Jim Lauderdales, Dwight Yoakams, and so many others - and who by the way are still recording today - yet have been left off this album.

Vince Gill and his Notorious Cherry Bombs contribute a song called "Wait A Minute" but it sure isn't the same song written by his old friend Herb Pedersen, who was instrumental in taking the young, former replacement for Craig Lee Fuller in Pure Prarie League one step further on the way to Country superstardom.

Shame on You! - gosh, you could have included Rascal Flats and no one would have noticed the difference.

Oh yeah, there's a Dirt Band recording here. Not complaining, but up until recently the Nittys made Nashville their home, not L.A., Bakersfield, or Woody Creek. But that doesn't explain why Steve Young ("Seven Bridges Road") or Bernie Leadon who do live in the "home" of "country" music were excluded.

REMEMBER KIDDIES - if it weren't for two albums - "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the McGuinn-Chris Hillman-Gram Parsons-Kevin Kelley Byrds or the Burritos wonderful first album "Gilded Palace of Sin" Americana or Alt-Country might never have gotten an audience. You'd never be hearing this kind of music, nor this album. Ralph Emery and the original Nashville purists had done their utmost to prevent Country Rock (the precursor of Americana music) from being a viable music force - and sadly, those today who should appreciate what Hillman, Parsons, Clarence White, Gene Clark, the Dirt Band and so many others did can only throw a bone to Jeff Hanna and company, and to Emmylou. Forget the rest, they're as ignored as if "Drug Store Truck Driving Man" Emery was still running the show.

5 out of 5 stars How can you NOT buy this for such a low price?.......2005-04-29

Whether your perspective on this CD is as an introduction to broader musical interests or a supplement to your current collection of Americana material, you simply can't pass up this bargain. I was already a fan of large amouts of bluegrass and alternative country, two genres intertwined with the "Americana" scene, so I knew several songs on this compilation already. However, it's a good listen in itself, and it sent me off to buy more good music I'd just discovered.

If you have any interest in any part of Americana, do not pass up this opportunity. It will definitely broaden your musical perspective.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids of all ages.......2006-06-29

I have seen Sara perform twice now--the last time with her older daughter along with her. She is great with kids and her songs are catchy, easily learned and have wonderful messages in them. Look at me....a song that all parents should listen to and every kid should learn to sing. This album includes all of her older kid material..it will have you singing, clapping and wanting more. The final song on the album is beautiful and bittersweet and makes for a great lullaby. It's a wonderful collection. If you have the chance to see her perform...it's well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Third in an impressive series of audio CDs.......2004-03-10

Big Kid is third in an impressive series of audio CDs designed to inspire quality parent-child time through music and poetry. Award-winning singer and songwriter Sara Hickman reaches out with enthusiastic and movement-oriented songs to spark activity, confidence, and imagination in developing young minds. The individual tracks include Iolana, Cantaloupe!, Ooh La La, Middle Of A Little Country Road, Eat My Breakfast, Look At Me, Louise, Pledge, Little Seed, Radiation Man, Pink On The Inside, Here It Comes, My Sista My Friend, Nanatime!, Little Yella Dog, Belinsky, I Wish I Were A Princess, It's Fall, Space Poetry!, Pillowman!, Red Wagon, Rainstick, I Wish You Well, and Pray For Peace. Also very highly recommended are the two earlier CDs from Sarah Hickman: Newborn (featuring both traditional and original songs for newborns and their parents) and Toddler (a collection of songs, stories, and poetry that teaches counting, colors, animals, sounds, and geography suitable for preschoolers).

A favorite of folk fans in the Boston area, the singer-songwriter makes a striking bid for a broader audience with her third release. The propulsive "East of the Mountains" and "Short Work" benefit from the backbeat of former Morphine drummer Billy Conway (Delmhorst's co-producer), while "Hurricane" builds to a furious climax through the Neil Young-style guitar squall of Kevin Barry. Multi-instrumentalist Delmhorst seasons various tracks with fiddle, cello, and guitars. Though her breathy, brooding vocals can occasionally sound a bit mannered--giving a cloying quality to the overly precious "Hummingbird"--most of the musical settings reinforce the power of her elemental imagery. While the bulk of the material evokes the turbulence of a relationship, the conviction that Delmhorst brings to her music suggests that it would take an awfully strong wind to blow her away. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Songs for anyone who likes acoustic music, hurricane, drought, or otherwise.......2006-03-26

If you needed proof that the best songwriters out there are not the most famous, Kris is it. Her voice will floor you and her lyrics will pick you back up again. Buy this album, and then go and buy Red Bird, her collaboration with P. Mulvey and J. Foucault. You won't regret it.

Delmhorsts songs are strong, implacable and iconic. In this album she really abandons the personal-confessional style of 90s-era acoustic songwriting -- and fully comes into her own, using the pure voice of metaphor, myth, and image. Delmhorst loves the negative image -- "Baby, you're no train, you're the track" ... "no more weathervane, I'm gonna be the wind / no more turn around" -- and through her gorgeous low voice you can hear the muscle of her language rippling powerfully beneath.

And what a voice! It grows dark, menacing in minor in the likes of "East of the Mountains," "Weathervane" and "Come Home on the Train," and so sweet and gauzelike in "Juice + June" and (especially) "Mingalay" that the hard of heart would grow teary-eyed to hear her.

Simply put, this album is a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Trains and Hurricanes!.......2005-02-13

I don't buy much North American music, though you'll find Caroline Lavelle, Loreena Mckennitt, Mae Moore, Sarah McLachlan, October Project, Paul Simon, Kristine W, Milla Jovovich, and Over the Rhine in my collection (all of these, by the way, are recommended). Kris Delmhorst was unknown to me until just a few weeks ago. Based on a personal recommendation (thanks a million, Katie!) I bought it, and I have been listening to it almost non-stop since. I adore this album!

To those unfamiliar with this artist, her voice is somewhat reminiscent of McLachlan's, but the songs are moodier, less contrived, and seem more personal than McLachlan's. In that respect, her work has more in common with Mae Moore, but with a more visceral approach.

Several of the songs contain imagery of trains and hurricanes, the reasons for which are mysterious....

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't she a star?.......2004-05-17

I love female singer-songwriters-- I'm a huge fan of Gillian Welch as well as Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, the Indigo Girls, Lucinda Williams, Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, etc. I'm always on the lookout for more to add to list, and if you'll let me mix my metaphors, Kris Delmhorst is a diamond in a haystack. Her voice and lyrics are beautiful and I'm really surprised that she isn't better known. Thank goodness I happened upon amazon's free download because I had never heard of this amazing woman. I went right out and bought all of her CDs and every last one is worth it. The songs range from mellow and introspective to rollicking and bluegrassy. If you like Alison Kruass, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, or the Indigo Girls I almost guarantee you'll appreciate Kris's albums.

5 out of 5 stars One more time.......2004-03-13

This is one of those rare cds that I can listen to for days at a time and not get tired or annoyed. There is quite the musical mix and yet Kris's voice is constantly blending in perfectly as it floats over the music. This cd has it all: upbeat 'bluegrassy' songs such as "Bobby Lee", "East of The Mountains", "Come Home" and "Short Work". It has slow, jazzy songs "Waiting Under the Waves" and "Juice+June". Then there are the more 'rocky' songs "Wasted Word", "Weathervane". And of course, my personal favorites, the sad, mellow songs that really allow Kris's vocals to shine "Too Late", "You're No Train", and "Mingalay". "Hummingbird" is one of the most beautiful songs I have EVER heard and it is my favorite of this cd. I can get lost in this music and that is a good thing. Kris has a unique and soulful voice that can put me to sleep or get me excited to be alive. I love this cd and highly recommend it to all!!

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Voice, Beautiful Music.......2004-01-27

Admittedly, I'm a sucker for great women singers. But on this album Kris Delmhorst shows she has much more than a distinctive voice, bringing a thematically linked set of songs together with some wonderful musicianship by Delmhorst and her band. And yet, it really is Delmhorst's voice that makes this an album to listen to both casually and carefully... repeatedly. But while you listen, you'll also find that this CD shows lots of respect for folk music styles. A sample of the songs and why I can't stop listening:

"East of the Mountains"
This country ballad displays something of Delmhorst's feel for a range of music styles. The voice here has all the rich texture of the gentler songs on the album, but applied to a quick-tempo tale of a woman "sent away" by her family, never to see her lover again, Delmhorst registers both sensual longing and resilient anger.

"Bobby Lee"
Of the many songs on the album that give Delmhorst a chance to really give the warmth of her voice full sway, this along with "Mingalay" may be the best. And while the star here is the wonderful tone of voice that gives the song's simple melody its full emotional range, the more I listen, the more I find myself thinking about its subject... the difficulty of "rolling the stone away" in a maybe-permanently broken relationship.

This song is a great example of just how resourceful a musician Delmhorst is, neither just a singer nor just a songwriter. You sense here that the album has a non-ostentatious feel for making use of its range of resources, much like you do when you listen to Merrie Amsterberg's "Little Steps" or Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" (as different as those artists are from Delmhorst).

"Juice and June"
At her most sultry here, Delmhorst and her band take it slow to get across the beauty of dancing toward passion, under the influence of "juice and June." The lovely risks of letting yourself fall too soon, which are slyly linked here to the pleasures of indulging in the music itself, give the song that wonderful quality of being a song about falling that lures its listener into falling for the song's own "juice and June."

"Hurricane"
I just have to begin by saying that this one sends chills down my spine. Again, and again. Why? Well, the song is about loving (someone's) storminess. It's an appealing tune, makes you want to sing it. And while the lyrics aren't unnecessarily tangled up with poetry... the texture of Delmhorst's voice gets a hold of the passion without histrionics... that is, through singing in the purest sense, not a display of singing. She handles the song the way a great actor does a great monologue, letting the material fully register in herself and show her the way to give it voice. And so she let's the song unfold toward its stormy closing instrumental burst in a way that feels organic.

"Come Home"
A song that could show up on a Gillian Welch album, here played simply with background rain effects, and sung with that remarkable voice. Listen to it on headphones to hear how Delmhorst keeps it simple and yet there's nothing simple in a voice working with a song's genre to capture its expressive range while staying true to its style.

"Wasted Word"
A sweet tune, about making the "wasted" past right in the lovely present. Pain has never looked so sweet, sincerely so, but you can't sing this song and make it believable unless you have a voice that can capture pain and beauty at once.

"Short Work"
A sort of country shuffle on betrayal and paying it back. Again, Delmhorst knows how to work within the song's shape to texture it musically but not interfere with the expressive potentials that it has as written.

"Mingalay"
An album that circles its hurricane theme throughout would not be complete without a traditional sailor's ballad... given a thoughtful update here through Delmhorst's final verse that complements the song's traditional look homeward from the sea with a look out to sea from those waiting on land. Played here with a bluesy sultriness, the song allows Delmhorst to handle the melody with a characteristic mix of aching tenderness and passion.

And again, you'll be torn between singing along and listening in rapt silence. To me, a singer who can cultivate precisely this conflict in the listener must be doing something right.

If you want to get a sense of just how remarkable the songwriting is here, do this: make a short playlist for yourself of
"East of the Mountains"
"Bobby Lee"
"Juice and June"
"Hurricane"
"Wasted Word"
"Mingalay"
and give this short set a listen. I defy you to find me a more beautiful set of songs on any recent recording, though each is different in style. But don't keep listening to this short set, go back to the full CD and listen to it all.

This is very, very good songwriting, musicianship, and, not least of all, singing. Spread the word, because this is an artist who deserves an appreciative audience.

In this day and age We live in, this certainly lifts your spirits. I think this would be a very good basic "CD" for everyone to have in their collection, who is America minded !

With this follow-up to 2002's Love and China, the thematically adventurous Massachusetts-based duo turns its songwriting and trilling sisterly harmonies toward the uncertain, often tumultuous world of female adolescence. The Nields sisters occasionally get a trifle erudite on songs like "Plastic Angel" and "The Day I Let Glory Steer." They are more successful when they grapple more viscerally with the perils of teenage intimacy ("When I Let You into My Closet") or the struggle for personal liberation from small-town minds (title tune). And when they deliver a tour de force like the affirming country ballad "When I'm Here," their intertwined voices ring not only with occasional anger and well-aimed sarcasm, but also empathy and passion. --Bob Allen

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another nields gem.......2005-08-29

This album is another gem and a deserving follow up to Nerissa and Katryna Nields' classic "Love and China". Nerissa's tales of life and growing up are mesmerizing.

The soaring, Nieldsy harmonies at the end of the album's opening song "The Day I Let Glory Steer" blew me away the first time that I heard them and are still blowing me away well over a year later. "Glory" holds special meaning for this father of a 4 year old girl.

I'm guessing that everyone who hears this album will find a song which holds some special meaning for them, too.

4 out of 5 stars More Nields is good news.......2004-03-29

As has been said before, the songs on _This Town Is Wrong_ relate to Nerissa's book of the same name. I don't think each song is by a different character (as I first thought when I read reviews), but rather the songs are by different characters, and some have more than one. Not that it makes any difference. You can enjoy the album without having read the book or even knowing about it. The sisters go back to their rocking days, and the album sounds more like the Nields band than the duo's release. The country influence is still there, even stronger on songs like "When I'm Here" and "Sara, With Your Ring" and present, but in more country-folk format on other songs. Overall it's grown and continues to grow on me, though the roughness the sisters' voices sometimes have grates on me a bit more than usual. I'm happy to have a whole album full of their insights on teenagers (from the perspective of both teenagers and adults.) The Nields have brought us so many great songs about teenagers (much of _Gotta Get Over Greta_ springs to the top of my head; there are many others) it seems like they're the right people to do it. Right now it's my least favorite of any of the Nields releases I've heard, but considering how much I love their music, it's the difference between a "B" and an "A." I still like _This Town Is Wrong_ a lot and heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars how to get out of the winter blues.......2004-01-30

The first best cd of 2004 has to be Katryna and Nerissa Nields'
This Town is Wrong. The writing is expansive, use of language and imagery keeps you listening to each song. The sisters outdo themselves in harmonies, the production of the cd suits the material.. it is highly listenable, enjoyable, and a great second effort by these New England Based singer songwriters..

5 out of 5 stars this town rocks.......2004-01-21

The Nields sisters have outdone themselves this time. You don't have to know that the album is the soundtrack to a book to enjoy this wonderful set of songs, but the background enhances the experience even more. The songs on the album were supposedly written by two different characters in the book, yet somehow Nerissa has managed to make it completely clear which are which. And the sibling harmonies have never sounded more beautiful.

Dave Chalfant is one of the most exciting producers out there today. This is the most gorgeous sounding album yet from any incarnation of the Nields, with sounds we haven't heard in their work before.

    A must-buy!!!

    5 out of 5 stars I can't wait for the book!!!.......2004-01-17

The Nields sisters have done it again! Nerissa is such an amazing songwriter, and as always, Nerissa and Katryna's harmonies lift the spirit. The album goes with Nerissa's upcoming book of the same title, about two teenage girls. You don't need to know the book to enjoy the album, but each song is by one of the characters in the book. This will make it really fun when the book comes out next fall. I can't wait. In the meantime, I will have something to tide me over.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Misty River.......2006-08-19

We first heard Misty River played on NPR (KLCC) from Eugene and liked them so much we had to see them live when they played near us in Newport. They were superb - musically and vocally, wonderful harmonies - and they choose great songs to do in addition to the ones they write themselves. "Box of Lace" (by fiddle player/singer Chris Kokesh) is a standout which has brought tears to my eyes numerous times - and Guy Clark's "Home Grown Tomatoes" is another favorite. Each member of the band is a virtuoso on her respective instrument(s)- violin/fiddle, acoustic bass, accordian, banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukelele - as well as being a capable lead vocalist, and their performances are filled with beauty and good humor.

We bought a copy of "Willow" from them during the first performance intermission (they come out to chat and autograph CD's) and by the end of the performance I went and bought a second copy (my first niece was just born and her middle name was Willow!). I just bought a third copy from Amazon to send to my brother for his b'day. We have by now seen Misty River three times in person, and have all four of their CD's, but Willow is still our favorite! The band is a joy, try to see them live, but by all means get this CD, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars The four songbirds that flow along Misty River are deserving of considerable recognition & success.......2005-12-12

Playing Time - 51:30 -- Misty River's Americana music has acoustic tints of Celtic, old-time, folk, country and bluegrass. As a sequel to their live album, "Willow" has engaging arrangements of five originals and nine others. Haunting aires, mournful ballads, and winsome lullabies might first appear to be their greatest strength. However, the mists rise when the four talented women transition from their leisurely approach to spiritually-tinged uptempo material such as "Homegrown Tomatoes," "The Cuckoo," and "Shady Grove." The latter includes some rousing twin fiddling and tastefully rendered key changes. Their standard instruments of choice are guitar, banjo, fiddle, accordion and bass. In their own personalized approach, "Willow" also incorporates some percussion, mandolin, shakuhachi, and uilleann pipes. The production and recording assistance of Billy Oskay (bigredstudio.com) becomes apparent in certain songs.

The band includes Carol Harley (guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele), Chris Kokesh (fiddle, guitar), Dana Abel (accordion, piano), and Laura Quigley (bass). All four impart both lead and harmony vocals to the mix. In fact, the majority of their songs with singing incorporate 3- or 4-parts to the choruses, and they have become a key component of Misty River's rippling current. Their masterful guests include Rob Schnell, John Reischman, Hanz Araki, Doug Smith, Billy Oskay, Greg Clarke, and Tom Creegan. If there's one slight misstep on "Willow," it is the heavy double mandolin in the mix of "Tammany Hall," an instrumental with both Harley's and Clarke's mandolins. While the technique certainly imparts rhythmic intensity, it becomes a bit overbearing.

The first half of "Willow" blossoms with their covered material. When Misty River chooses repertoire, they look to the great songs of Kate Wolf ("Green Eyes"), Dave Carter ""When I Go"), Paul Simon ("Kathy's Song"), Guy Clark ("Homegrown Tomatoes"), as well as some traditional favorites. Despite the genres they draw from, their technique is to look for introspective singer/songwriter material. By the second half of this set of music, the album evolves into a very strong presentation of Misty River's original material that is both entertaining and very listenable. The finest moments occur in Chris Kokesh's trademark songs, produced with evocative messages that feature her lead vocals with nicely-blended harmonies. The title cut is rendered so mournfully that the "Willow" truly begins to weep. Accompanied by only accordion, pipes, whistles and bowed bass, the result is one that oozes with expressive emotion. Misty River's 4-part a cappella rendition of "Bright Morning Stars" is also mighty powerful. The closer, "Baird's Lullaby," written by Dana Abel, is a quiet little lyrical piece full of nature's imagery and optimism.

This album is certainly not a sleeper. "Willow" is deserving of much acclaim, high recommendation, and widespread circulation. The four songbirds that flow along Misty River are similarly deserving of considerable recognition and success. I sometimes wonder why some major Americana music label hasn't picked up this band that has been around for about a decade touring, recording, writing, entertaining and .... winning. 5 out of 5 stars Great folk-country ensemble.......2004-08-07

I'm starting to become a big fan of Misty River. Their 3rd CD is even better than the first two, and they do a fantastic rendition of Dave Carter's "When I Go". It's too bad Amazon doesn't have any samples of this CD yet, but I would say this CD is closer to Rising than their Live album. I think anyone who likes folk/country singers like Emmy Lou Harris or Allison Kraus will probably like this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-06-05

A wonderful CD. Their version of Dave Carter's "When I Go" is worth the price of 1000 CDs. I've worked as a hunting and fishing guide my whole life and I've heard a lot of real good folk music like they play it in the hills. I can tell you, these women have voices like the angels and they know how to pick a banjo. Good stuff.
