About the Artist
The Ruby Rakes are no strangers to San Francisco's music scene. Between them, Barb Plank, Kurt Stevenson, Michael Israel, Greg Reeves, David Reidy, Paul Rustigian and Tin Hat Trio's Rob Burger, have worked with or had their music performed by the Counting Crows, Jumbo Shrimp, Mare Winningham, Chuck Prophet, Jim Campilongo and countless other Bay Area artists. Although technically a debut, the Ruby Rakes' new record is actually the latest in a series of long-time collaborations and friendships. Kurt and Barb, the nucleus of the Ruby Rakes, have played together for years. In 1998 they recorded "Pentecostal Bouffant", a collaboration with some of their favorite songwriters and players. In all, seventeen musicians contributed to the record, and it became an underground not-so-well-kept secret. In response to that reception, and urged on by those same musicians that graced their other recordings, the Ruby Rakes were born: a new band focusing primarily on Kurt and Barb's songwriting and performing talents. "Ruby Rakes" has a country soul, but wears many other hats: Latin, European and American sounds grace the record, and easily fit the outstanding grooves laid down by Michael Israel and Greg Reeves, the best darn rhythm section around. "Ruby Rakes" was recorded by David Plank (another SF veteran) and mastered by Patrick Conway, who produced Steve Owen's record.
