The victim's point of view.......2002-09-28
I have not been a big Ricky Skaggs listener until several years ago when I bought this CD. The song "give us a happy home" came into my life at just the right time. It is the only song that I have ever heard that clearly demonstrates the reality of divorce from the child's (victim's) point of view. If you are a parent and are contemplating divorce, please listen to this song first!! Your child will thank you for it!
A Country Treasure comes home........1998-10-25
It is stunning to hear the most talented picker in the game regale us with his dexterity and understanding of his kind of music. Ricky Skaggs has his place in the role of country honour despite crass comments. Ricky Skaggs has taken time out to do many other things such as producing and with his latest CD it is a well overdue return to show them how Country, Western and of course Blue Grass should be played presented and sung, not from the pocket but from the heart. Keep Pickin Ricky

Awesome and authentic.......2002-09-14
...Over the years, I have learned a lot of music and a lot about life from Ginny. Thus I leaped for joy last year when I saw this CD listed, and the wait until my wife could open it on Christmas Day was interminable.
These songs are marvelous, and it is easy to tell from Ginny's strong, clear, determined voice that she knows whereof she sings. There is truth in these songs, and though many of them deal with death, they are all soothing in their own way, and give us hope. The first song on the album, "Don't Neglect the Rose," is fast becoming not just a favorite but a part of my own repertoire as well. "Long Black Limousine" simply overflows with irony and sadness, and Ginny's wonderful vocal qualities bring it to life. I cry every time I hear "A Heart That Will Never Break Again," but just as quickly I smile. And if "The Day I Lose Your Memory" is what's playing when I pull into the parking lot at work, you can bet it'll be the one streaming through my head all the way till lunch at least.
This is good singing, and "Letters to My Father" deserves a place in all folk/country/honky-tonk collections. I defy anyone to not be moved by Ginny Hawker's heavenly presentation.
Appalachia's premiere mountain singer.......2002-02-08
Ginny Hawker has a voice that will give you goose bumps on your soul. I first heard her at the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville and have been a believer ever since. She is not only my favorite singer of the old-time music, she is my favorite singer period.
This is the first of Ginny's recordings to bear only her name, which is more a testament to her humility than her ability. A blend of gospel, old-time, bluegrass, honky-tonk, and even a ballad, this album provides a nice cross-section of mountain music. Anyone who longs for the days when country music was the black sheep of the pop music family will love this record. Uninhibited, honest, and raw, Hawker's alto will make believers of the heathen and bring a tear to the eye of the converted.
My favorite tracks on this record (so far) are "My Warfare Will Soon Be Over" (it's like the old-time equivalent of "Impressions" - like "Man of Constant Sorrow" without the movie) and "The Palace Grand" (I cried the first time I heard this one). The only disappointment is that Hawker performs none of her Primitive Baptist repertoire; the liner notes notwithstanding, it seems this record was made with a mind to the commercial (for those interested, Ginny's a cappella Baptist pathos can be heard on the record "Family Reunion," along with the voice of her father, to whom this album is dedicated).
Highly recommended.
Sad, spare old time music.......2001-11-03
Anyone who believes that things were better in the good old days needs to listen to the music from the "good old days." These songs are full of pain and suffering and agony. "My Warfare Will Soon be Over" is my favorite on the CD. It's a chant of celebration, of sorts, of the end of a life on earth and the beginning of another in heaven. Pardon me for thinking it's not really a happy song -- and I don't think the songwriter thought it was all that happy a subject or he would have found some happier notes.
This is one hell of a good CD from an unknown artist. Ginny Hawker can sing. She does dirges, "Letters from my Father," white blues, "You Don't Tell Me You Love me Anymore," bluegrass, "Those two Blue Eyes," old-time country, "Long Black Limousine," and a capella gospel, "The Gospel Ship Has Long Been Sailing." The common factors of all are spare instrumentation, tunes that sound sad even if they aren't, and an authentic, old-time country sound.
To complain a little, the arrangements could have been more imaginative. I'd give up some authenticity for a few more rollicking banjo rolls or good guitar licks. But this is a good one: interesting, mostly unknown tunes, a singer with a strong voice, and uncompromising old-time style.

Can't Lose With Bill Monroe.......2004-02-13
Plain and simple, this is a great CD. In fact, just about any Monroe album you buy will be worth the moolah. I picked this CD at the store because I was getting into bluegrass and wanted some Monroe. The packaging looks kind of dated, but the music is fantastic. Driving through the mountains on a cross country trip, there's nothing better than listening to "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "Bluegrass Breakdown", and all the different incarnations of "Blue Yodel."
If looking for nothing other than an introduction to some great bluegrass and the genius that began it, this would be a great CD to start off with. But for serious bluegrass fans or those who know their Bill Monroe, I would suggest a more comprehensive collection or a box set. Either way, you're getting good music that Britney, Justin and 50 Cent can't touch.
Good but not Great.......2002-06-17
I thoroughly enjoyed the songs which Bill Monroe made popular such as "In the Pines", "Kentucky Waltz". "Blue Moon of Ketucky", "Footprints in the Snow", Etc. Other less known bluegrass music you would have to be an absolute purist to enjoy.

They keep it mountainous!.......2005-10-24
Playing Time - 43:36 -- Subtitled "A Tribute To My Father Carter Stanley," this project features the lead singing of Jeanie Stanley who was only four years old when her father passed away on December 1, 1966 at age 41. Life on the road was hard, and the emotional and physical strain took its toll. Until his end, Carter sang with strength, feeling and conviction, and those same qualities are what his daughter Jeanie builds into her singing. Jeanie's uncle (Ralph Stanley) and cousin (Ralph Stanley II) also sing lead on a couple numbers. Vocal accompaniment is by Joe Isaacs (a long-time family friend who also produced the album), Stacy York (a member of Joe Isaac's band) and John Rigsby (former mandolin and fiddle player for Dr. Ralph Stanley). This recording includes two songs written by Carter Stanley which have never been recorded entitled, "Two Sides To A Story" and "Jesus Is Precious." The latter is sung acappella by Ralph Stanley. The album closer, "Dream of a Miner's Child" has Jeanie's voice mixed with her father's which was recorded live at the 1961 Chicago Folk Festival. Some favorite selections are the trios (like "The Fields Have Turned Brown") that have Jeanie singing with Ralph Stanley and John Rigsby. Stacy York and Joe Isaacs also sing harmonies on other cuts. "Harbor of Love" is the only quartet. I'm sure glad that Jeanie chose the mournful "Lonesome River" and "The Angels are Singing." I wouldn't have minded if she had included the classic "A Vision of Mother." Jeanie agreed with me that was one song that she wished now she had included, even if it had to make a 15th song.
The instrumental accompaniment is provided by the Clinch Mountain Boys, and they do a fantastic job. They feel it and play it in the old-time mountain way. Stacy York provides some solid harmonizing. The 16-page CD booklet has liner notes by Gary B. Reid, as well as many interesting photographs. None is as touching as the cover photo of Carter and Jeanie as a toddler, and when she closes with "O daddy, dear daddy please don't go away, I never could live without you." Ralph had to prove it could be done, not only with the passing of Carter but another of his lead singers, Roy Lee Centers, a few years later. Now resting in the old Smith Family graveyard in McClure, Va., Carter Stanley is a guardian from on high.
Ralph Stanley provided emotional support, encouragement and wisdom to help Jeanie realize this dream. Ralph says "I'm proud of it. It's good, it's a piece of history and people are gonna' love it." Carter would have been so proud of his "baby girl," and the tribute album also acknowledges the role that Jeanie's mother, Mary, played in remembering Carter and his music. Jeanie sings with rustic mountain twang and powerful delivery that reminds me a bit of Rose Maddox. I'm sure that it was moving experience for all of the musicians to work on this tribute album. The timeless music's sung right, done right, and has the proper feeling for a daughter's tribute to her eloquent songwriting, guitar-picking and singing father. With mountain soul, this album hits you right in the gut. As Jack Cooke would say, they keep it mountainous. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Album Description
As the father and daughter duo, the Hobohemians, Bruce and April Hobart make music. Honest music; no pretense. What you hear is what you get. With original songs that draw on the string band and folk traditions, the Hobohemians have given us a collection of songs that feel as comfortable as a wood fire on a chilly Maine night. April and Bruce are from Maine, and their musical offerings possess the sturdy and genuine qualities for which Maine is known. There are a number of well-crafted songs here. In "I'll Be Right Home," penned by Bruce, gospel harmonies drive home the desire to return to that comfortable place. Bruce gets to sing high lonesome here too, and it sounds mighty fine. The man with the clerical collar in Bruce's "Circuit Rider" is at peace with duties that include naming babies and inspecting for scabies. This fiddling man of God is portrayed in a manner that allows us to accompany him on visits to his holler's faithful. In the lovely "Stories," April relates fond memories of encounters and adventures that tell of catching salamanders, dancing at recitals, and keeping a vase that contained lilacs given to her by a childhood beau. April employs a lilting vocal that perfectly fits the mood of this track. In "Trader's Blues," Bruce's rugged vocal convincingly delivers lyrics that tell of deals for baseball cards featuring Ted Williams, Rocket, Scooter McGruder, and Mo Vaughn. A can of sardines and a bottle of IPA make these deals sweeter still. It's not just the songwriting that will draw you to these songs, however. Listen to the music! Fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and banjos weave confidently around harmonies that glide through chorus and verse. Bob Boothby sits in on banjo on "Brothers," my favorite Hobohemian track. Heather Pierson chips in on piano on four tracks (and backup vocals on "The Lonesome Hobo's Blues") and was the recording engineer of this worthy project. Expert mastering by Toby Mountain delivers a clear, cr! isp sound. As I write these notes, it's twenty-five degrees and the season's first snow is expected during the night. Perfect. Put another log on the fire and cozy up with the Hobohemians.

I LOVE this CD!!!!.......2003-03-09
This is one of my favorite CD's! It sounds great on my IPOD and I listen to it at the gym all the time. My favorite song is "Stories", April has an awesome voice!!!!
Grab a beer and invite some friends over, and pop in the CD.....
Hoedown!.......2002-08-25
21 songs for 15 bucks! That is a bargain. And what a great CD - excellent songwriting all around. Poignant and haunting at times, and other times loose, fun, and fiery! Bruce and April have taken up their guitars, banjo, and other roots instruments and given us a gem of an album, full of stories and catchy riffs. A must-have for fans of honest, acoustic music.
The Hobohemians.......2002-04-30
If you like lively foot-stompin' music, this is a great album of original tunes written by the artists. Of course I may be a little bit predjudiced as I'm the Dad and Grandfather of the artists
HOBOHEMIANS....ON THEIR WAY UP!.......2002-04-30
This is a wonderful mix of lively, toe-tapping originals with a traditional, down-home, bluesy, and sometimes nostalgic flavor. Let's hope we hear more in the future from this multi-talented father-daughter duo! This is a must-have!
