Until 1978, Blondie was perceived mostly as a '60s-referencing, British-Invasion-meets-girl-groups band. With veteran producer Mike Chapman at the helm for their third album, though, everything changed for this group bred from the New York punk scene. Honing in on Blondie's strongest points--Deborah Harry's come-hither vocals and Clem Burke's powerhouse drumming--Chapman helped recast the band to the power pop side of new wave, and with impressive results. Driven by the punk-meets-disco chart-topping hit, "Heart of Glass," and the herky-jerky "One Way or Another," as well as a muscular cover of the Nerves' "Hanging on the Telephone," Parallel Lines established Blondie as major stars. --Billy Altman

"Millions of young guys once had a love and it was a gas".......2007-01-31
Back when Blondie was being hailed as the biggest new-wave band in pop music by fans and critics alike, there were also just as many critics that quickly dismissed Blondie as "bubblegum pop," and one group that would never have staying power. But I think it's been observed enough how the group has had the last laugh. Parallel Lines helped establish Blondie as a serious music group and turned their cult following into commercial success. This album is also the first where Debbie Harry's voice gets sharpened with the sensibility of a sweet, vulnerable girl one minute to sultry and rapturous behind disco grooves the next. The album made punk, pop, and disco shake hands, which was a method unheard of in 1978. Songs like "Hanging on the Telephone," "Picture This," "Pretty Baby," and "Sunday Girl," have become irresitable pop gems, while "I Know But I Don't Know," and "Fade Away & Radiate," featuring a terrific guitar lick by Robert Fripp, are punk-driven classics. Last but not least are the two hits that are forever getting played on the classic rock stations of today in "One Way or Another," and "Heart of Glass." And how has Debbie Harry played out as lead singer after all these years? As Rolling Stone stated when this album was ranked #140 on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, "Madonna was surely watching."
Blondie's Finest!!.......2007-01-27
This is the first Blondie album I ever bought apart from the greatest hits CDs, and it was worth every penny!!! It is my favorite Blondie album, and there is not one song on this album that is not fun to listen to and sing along to! Every song sounds like a radio hit! My favorite is, of course, "Heart of Glass." It has such a smooth and polished sound to it that you can't help but sing along! "Hanging on the Telephone" is another standout among standouts. "11:59" is upbeat and pure pop. "Sunday Girl" sounds like it could have been a girl group song. Debbie's attitude really shines through on "Just Go Away." The interesting lyrics and drum beats (especially in the beginning) make "Fade Away and Radiate" an unforgettable song. Some music goes out of style as the years go on, but "Parallel Lines" is definintely an exception. Any fan of Blondie or just pop music in general is almost sure to find this album a real gem and a standout in their album collection!
Parellel Lines.......2006-12-21
It's already been said by others. A great band, a great sound, a great album - The price is right, get your copy and relive the sound of Blondie!
The Peak of a Mercurial Band.......2006-07-05
I first heard Blondie's "Parallel Lines" LP while browsing at the Tower Records store in Westwood, near UCLA in 1978. By the time I heard the opening chords of the second song, I had a copy of the LP in line for the cash register.
Years have passed since, and a lot of Blondie's original fans were turned off or confused by some of their subsequent efforts. For those of you that used to really love Blondie, take another listen to Parallel Lines, and you'll immediately recall why. You probably haven't heard "Will Anything Happen," "11:59," "Pretty Baby," "Sunday Girl," or "Fade Away and Radiate" for a while, but they've held up pretty well. Add the classics "One Way or Another," "Hanging on the Telephone," and "Heart of Glass," and another listen to Parallel Lines is like running into an old friend.
This disk includes bonus tracks that reveal the band's live power, especially the fine power drumming of Clem Burke and Debbie Harry's rock diva vocal abilities, especially on a relatively raw version of "Bang a Gong."
!and this is why i love this album.......2006-06-28
It did truly change my life. I was 14 years old. I was smart, not abused or geeky but i needed a true outlet... I had loved spinning girl group 45's and Beatles records handed down to me. Parallel Lines introduced me to sarcasm. And it stuck. Also it's just a perfect record. Mike Chapman helped shape my adolescence, but this is his (almost) crowning moment. Try not to scream: "I fell in love with you". Everyone should have Parallel Lines.

Everybody knows.......2007-04-12
1975's finest. Perhaps one up- or mid-tempo tune short of an all-the-way (explosion, fireworks) masterpiece (that closing track is a touch maudlin), Between The Lines nevertheless blows out Ian's nearest "rivals" (Carole King, Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks and, dare I say, Paul Simon) and makes a serious claim for one of the 70's preeminent essential LP artifacts.
The success here, I believe, is that Ian (already a songwriting master by '69) keeps the chords simple enough to let her mesmerizing blasts of lyrical wisdom run their course. And there is sagacity, however embittered, on every track. The arrangements are smart, providing properly discreet shading to Ian's soul-inflected folk (and, occasionally)cabaret musings.
Ian sings a mean, low-key revelation. Even when her lyrical and sonic milieu is the tawdry dancehall ("Bright Lights and Promises"), she never showboats. Ian has the inspired ice of Peggy Lee. "The Come On," a deeply dire meditation on cheap love and low esteem, never lapses into sobbing gymnastics. Ian just delivers the bad news like an X-ray. Perfect every time.
There is a fiber-optic perfection to Ian's poetic observations. Male radio programmers and DJs were compelled by burning telephone lines, not market imperatives, to air "At Seventeen" - a startling runaway hit (prefiguring the later, bolder success of Suzanne Vega's "Luka"). It was simply heavy lasers set to kill. Ian didn't hit the mark, she expunged it.
What an artist.
A great memory!.......2007-01-15
Listening to this CD brings back memories of my "younger" years. It still is as pertinent now in its wording as it was back then...just in a different way. A great rememberance.
Between the Lines.......2007-01-10
One of the best voices God ever created. A mix of rock and easy listening to words and music you can understand. Every line connects with the very core of every human being that listens to her. Janis Ian is a true voice in the music industry.
THE LAST OF THE '70's SONGWRITERS.......2006-02-26
Some of Janis Ian's wordplay could make a bad poet blush. Take this line from her adolescent hell signature song, "At Seventeen", a tune betrayed by this bizarre description of teenage alienation, "Their small town eyes will gape at you, (gaping eyes?), in dull surprise when payment due, succeeds accounts received at seventeen". How's that, a teenage accountant? Or this from, "Tea and Sympathy", "Pass the tea and sympathy, for the good old days are long gone, we'll drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won." Never have I wanted to drink a toast to those, who most believe in what they've won. But just when you want to file these feminist minded, man-eating compositions under aimless testements, Ian slam bangs the finish with two monumental orchestrated numbers questioning the choice between laying down to the death of a lifetime with your lover, or the freedom artistic pursuit and single-hood can offer, making all her previous meandering diatribes sound meaningful. Here the album stands up and says hello, and the crescendoing climax calls you back for another listen. Some nice touches here and there as well, including a brooding cello solo at the end of, "Water Colors".
Awesome walk back in time........2005-07-13
I owned this album (vinyl) in the 70s and it's as great today as it was then. Was very glad to find it in CD, and can now share this incredible music with my kids. Thanks!

Amazon.com essential recording
The influence of Bristol, U.K.'s Massive crew on bringing trippy beats to the foreground is immeasurable. Not only were they the early test ground for other alterna-hop stars (ex-clansman Tricky, former songstresses Nicolette and Martina, and the lesser known productionists Smith & Mighty), they've spread their influence to everyone from fellow Bristol residents Portishead to Björk. Blue Lines is Massive's debut record and is the second musical union of Bristol's renowned collective, Wildbunch. The emotional purging and beat-driven orchestral movement of "Unfinished Sympathy" was among the first signs of life in contemporary English trip-hop culture. Other masterpieces, like "Daydreaming," which features Shara Nelson, Tricky, and other friends on the mic, throb with deep, dubby beats and soulful ambiance. Blue Lines marks the beginning of a musical legacy that is ever expanding. --Daniel Shumate

trip the hop fantastic.......2007-05-11
massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.
many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.
A Classic.......2007-04-19
There is nothing much left to say about Massive Attack's masterpiece of "trip-hop" that is Blue Lines.
Tricky's raps are classy and smart and the warm synth work is both inspiring and brilliant. The deep dub-like bass grooves on this album are legendary. "Unfinished Symphony" is a soulful pop masterpiece. This album is displayed prominently on my CD rack.
Ok, I will stop the praise..only if you buy this album now.
one of the most underrated debuts ever.......2007-03-22
if there is ever an overlooked album this is definitely one of them. from the moment "Safe from Harm" starts we are encapsulated by this unique Bristol sound. what makes this Bristol sound so unique is the using of vintage sounds and putting them into such new settings. this album is definitely un-categorizable. we have soul/R&B, dub, hip-hop and even the hint of the Portishead like vintage soundtrack sound. this album is most certainly seed planting and both sides of the Atlantic have undoubtedly taken this to full advantage. never has an album had a "i know i've heard this somewhere" kind of attitude.
Consider the context..........2007-01-16
An Italian, and a couple of Afro-Caribeans, living in Bristol, where a whole new scene is emerging, with the likes of Tricky, Portishead and Roni Size producing new beats. You produce your first album and name your band Massive Attack, only for George Bush senior to invade Kuwait. Hence the band became known (for a short while) as Massive (and I did have a copy simply named Massive till it was stolen - if you have one you have a rarity).
Like their other albums they use a female guest vocalist - this time soul singer Shola Ahma, who later went solo (maybe they'd have kept her?) What you have is slickly produced music that captures the early 90's. Their later albums are more sophisticated, btu this is where it all began.

MARC CAMPBELL OF THE NAILS SAYS THANK YOU.......2007-06-08
Finally, MOOD SWING gets released on cd. Better late than never. I'm delighted and surprised that MOOD SWING has connected with so many people.
And I'm really pleased that THE NAILS may be recognized as more than just the band that wrote and recorded 88 LINES ABOUT 44 WOMEN. My hope is that a new generation of listeners will discover MOOD SWING. Rock and roll is and will always be my religion and my passion. And at a time when rock has become more and more corporate and its message less and less provocative, I can say, absolutely, that I never got into rock and roll for money or fame. I got into it because I had no choice. When the spirits of rock and roll spoke, I listened and I made my move.
p.s. Andru, if you're ever in Taos, New Mexico, look me up. The drinks are on me.
Thanks, MARC CAMPBELL, THE NAILS.
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER RECORDED -- OBSCENELY IGNORED.......2007-05-23
I don't frequently engage in hyperbole, but this album has ALWAYS been in my Top Ten favorite records of all time. Really. "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys; "Something/Anything" by Todd Rundgren; "Help!" (the Brit version) by the Beatles; and then there's "Mood Swing" by the Nails. How this record and the singular vocal talents of Marc Campbell could be overlooked in 1984 when this album came out -- and how it could remain unissued on CD nearly 25 years -- is indeed one of the great mysteries of rock (next to the "Paul-Is-Dead" hoax; see my book Turn Me On, Dead Man for that story). Do yourself a favor -- even if you've only heard "88 Lines About 44 Women", you need to hear "Home Of The Brave", "White Wall", "Mood Swing" and a killer version of "Let It All Hang Out" whose arrangement was stolen wholesale by Huey Lewis and The News for their song "I Want A New Drug". Buy this now; you won't regret it.

Another album of unapologetic pop punk songs from this Santa Barbara outfit who have smartly filled in the void that Green Day left when they decided to dabble into rock's early canon and eschew self-loathing for more mature introspection. Sugarcult has none of those pretensions; instead their rock anthems are rather unadulterated and athletic--even when they're trying to sonically extricate themselves from complicated and claustrophobic romantic entanglements. With lyrics more clever than smart, Sugarcult makes romantic fatalism oddly entertaining as they take listeners through a wistful post mortem of a love affair gone awry. --Jaan Uhelszki
Album Description
The energy and dedication Sugarcult brought to Start Static created a massive fan base for the rock quartet around the world, selling nearly half a million copies -- 300,000 units in the United States alone. On their new, Gavin MacKillop produced album, Palm Trees and Power Lines the plaintive edge that lurked below the surface of singer/guitarist Tim Pagnotta's songs is now front and center. The new material has an emotional intensity that matches the band's electrifying musical jolt. Sugarcult is quintessentially Californian, and the new album's 12 songs play out against the backdrop of California's beauty and ugliness, its romance and reality; documenting a physical and psychological journey that begins and ends at the edge of the Pacific.
On the undeniably catchy rocker "Memory," the band effortlessly dives into one of the themes that have made them such an important band to their fans - love hanging by a thread. The similarly wrenching songs, "Crying" and "Over", search for a glimmer of affirmation amid the debris of shattered romantic dreams.
"Back to California,"encapsulates the album's dramatic payload in a vivid narrative ("Drive all night to hold you tight / Back to California / We couldn't win in the end") that recalls the climax of an earlier California saga of highways and hope, The Graduate.
"These songs are fresh documents of our lives over the last two years," says Marko. "We're more confident as musicians, we're more confident in our ideas - because, when you set out to do something against all odds and it's working, that just strengthens your resolve. It gives you the confidence to take more chances, keep doing the things you've been doing without apologies and just go for it."
Customer Reviews:
A great CD, very catchy tunes!.......2007-02-19
I found out about this band from this kid at school who kept going on and on about them and how great they were. He was the only one who knew about them. Just to shut him up, I decided to go buy one of their albums and I was amazed! This band is really good! All of the songs on this album are very catchy, with great guitar riffs. The singer sounds a lot like the Lit front man though. I had never any of their songs before, but this band should get more air play! Sample some of the tracks up above. My favorites are "Memory" "She's the Blade" and "Head Up." This is one of those albums where you don't want to go buy 1 or 2 songs off of it. Buy the whole thing! And their album Start Static is also very good but I like this one more. However, their latest album is not all that great.
One of the Few Decent Sophmore Attempts.......2006-05-08
I think this album is equivelent to Start Static. My fave track is 'Champaghne' (is that spelled right?).
Sugarcult's sophomore attempt........2005-12-26
Sugarcult's sophomore album, Palm Trees and Power Lines, falls into an interesting postion when it comes time for me to review it. I loved Start Static, and I'd go as far as to call it one of my 10 favorite albums released since the year 2000. I had very high hopes that PTAPL would not disappoint.
When I heard the first single, Memory, I was happy to hear that SC was still putting out catchy pop hooks. Hoping that most tracks would be in a similar fashion, I went out and got the album.
What I got was something else. While it's true that PTAPL has it's share of catchy songs reminiscent of Start Static (Memory, She's the Blade, What You Say), Tim, Marko, Airin and [at the time] new member Kenny try out some newer sounds as well. One track in particular, Champagne (a nice little number about founding member Ben Davis who left the band by the time of recording the album) is a perfect showcase of the band being able to very well handle these newer sounds. Sign Off, the album's closing track, also helps show the band's skill to play a slow song.
However, as much as I enjoyed the aforementioned songs, I can't say I cared for a good number of the remaining songs. I might seem like the odd one out, but I cannot stand Worst December, there's just something about the lyrics ("all I wanna do/is lie next to you") which I find to be a bit on the lame side. No offense to the band or their song writing of course, I just don't see the hype surrounding that song (Though, to be fair, I've heard the live version as well, and I enjoy it somewhat more than the studio one).
Overall, Palm Trees and Power Lines doesn't quite live up to it's predecessor, Start Static, but I wouldn't say that it falls into the Sophomore Slump category either- because it doesn't. It's a decent album, nicely produced, with some good songs, but there's also a lot of stuff that doesn't work out too well. I'd still recommend this to anyone, just after I recommended Start Static and Wrap Me Up In Plastic.
Stellar Pop Punk.......2005-11-03
You have to love an album that doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. After I heard Bouncing of the Walls a few years back, I was intrigued by Sugarcult, but never really followed up. Sugarcult's latest is pop punk at it's finest, and it's damn good at what it sets out to do. It's great to see an album come out now a days that is just flat out pedal to the metal unapolegetically pop punk and not emo or hardcore. This album is all about kick ass riffs and fun rock. This album is a great spiritual successor to past pop punk classics from Blink 182 and the others who knew how to put out an album that is all about rocking out. This is one you can just throw in your cd player and listen the entire way through.
Overall, I would give this a 4/5. There are a couple of songs that seem a little less inspired. This CD isn't a masterpiece or a marvel of modern music, but it excels at being a fun album.
Great second effort from one of California's finest.......2005-09-17
I give accolades to Sugarcult for putting out such a great sophomore effort. I hadn't heard of them until 2004 because they were still more underground than other alternative punksters like Blink 182 and Green Day, but once I listened to their hit "She's The Blade" I was hooked. This is pop-punk at its finest, folks; Green Day never had anything as listenable from their album American Idiot as much as the aforementioned "She's The Blade." That said, the first four tracks on Palm Trees & Power Lines are all incredibly delicious confections, from the shouter "Crying" to the chanter "Memory." But after those four outrageously good songs continues the CD's amount of filler (but good filler at that). Most of the remaining eight tracks are too slow and blahze for my liking, but heck, that's just my opinion. Overall, though, Sugarcult steered clear away from the sophomore slums and put out a great release. So go on then: BUY THIS CD!!

Customer Reviews:
Decent song from a tragic album.......2007-05-05
This song is half decent, but the follow up album is a major dissapointment, with Daniel coming across as a pretentious tryhard.
Great preview for the upcoming CD!.......2007-04-03
This single is a great peak into the upcoming album. It sort of preps you. Most Chair fans know by now that you never get the same thing from Silverchair twice--and "Young Modern" is no exception. Frankly, though I love all the Silverchair records, I think this may be the best one yet. It at least ties with "Diorama".
This single is worth buying, because it has "Sleep All Day," an awesome song that wouldn't have quite fit on the "Young Modern" record. It's an edgy mix between The Dissociatives, the new Chair songs, and many of Johns' old influences like Nirvana. It is a nice stepping stone towards "Young Modern," and well worth the $12.
The only other exclusive track on this disc is "Don't Want to Be the One (Live)." The best part is Daniel's dialogue at the beggining, but you won't find yourself listening to this track over and over again.
Daniel John's solo project.......2007-03-28
Well. When I heard the first single, "Straight Lines" I thought it sounded decent. I expected a lot more of that sound on this album.
Strangely enough it's probably the most rocking song on the album.
Apart from "Straight Lines" the album sounds like Daniel's side project with Paul Mac, "THE DISSOCIATIVES". It's fairly experimental, extremely pretentious, and so all over the place it's hard to enjoy in one listen.
This may have been better as Daniel's debut solo album or the next Dissociatives album.
The other two members of the band are now basically relegated to backing band to Daniel's self indulgence.
There's very little tone from the bass, it's just merged into the backround. The drums lack their classic "silverchair sound". It sounds more like session musicians playing along.
Musically this album has a 1960's & 70's sort of sound. Cinematic ballads. I hear a lot of John lennon's solo work and McCartney's in it too.
Some of the highlights are "Those thieving birds". "If you keep losing sleep".
Unfortunately there are quite a few weak tracks such as "Mindreader", "Insomnia", "Man that knew too much", "Waiting all day". Boring is the thought that comes to mind. Daniel seems to be trying out some other vocal stylings, a lot of english accents pop up in his voice now. Some sound alright but some sound cringeworthy.
David Bottrill's mix of this album is very brick wall and in your face.
It doesn't back off much.
I still don't know what to think of it as an album. It's very odd.
It's almost bizarre to go back and listen to Frogstomp then put this new album on. It's like a completely different band.
I'm sure it will grow on me more. The highlights are quite good but I would have preferred it if Daniel had continued with the Diorama sound. It still generally sounded like a band back then.
CHEERS!

We once drew some lines in black..........2007-06-16
This is truly the defining album for Project 86. I love Project 86 and consider them probably the most underrated band of the past 10 years. This album gave them credibility and they're still rockin hard. If you're interested in Project 86 but not sure where to start, you start right here with Drawing Black Lines.
Pisces King.......2006-03-07
I just went and seen Project 86 live in Ventura California and I can tell you I don't think that Project 86 has "Sold Out" because the turn out was not at all big, and they still played like they were rockin' a stadium arena...So I say who ever does not like Project 86, clean your friggin ears out and listen to what is going on...take a look around you because there is so much more going on that simply having a good time.
Best chapter of the Project.......2005-09-26
I rate their albums best to worst in this order:
Drawing Black Lines
Songs To Burn Your Bridges By
Truthless Heroes
Self Titled
Like all the truly great bands, Project 86 has been able to have a constantly evolving sound that displays excellent musicianship, songwriting, and diversity. Songs like Chimes, Souix Lane Spirits, and Hollow Again are gripping lyrical and musical experiences. They tell a story and provide a soundtrack that sends chills down my spine like few other bands can. I can easily overlook the fact that, like every musician, Project 86 has changed their style a little as they have experienced life and grown more versatile with their skills. Every one of their albums has been amazing, and though I have high hopes for "And The Rest Will Follow...", Drawing Black Lines is definitely (up to now) that one definitive Project 86 album that sets them far above the competition. Definitely their heaviest and darkest album to date, and the "chill down your spine" factor is up there with the best of them. It is my favorite album behind Tool's Lateralus.
Second best Project 86 album..........2005-05-15
Why Project 86 decided to follow counterparts POD into the abyss known commercially as "selling out" is a complete mystery to me. We all know why they did it: the idea of more money. However, Project 86's type of abrasive and in-your-face sound and lyricism has never been a very marketable one. POD's success depended on their ability to completely tone down their music and message, and create pop-rock songs that spoke to the nation's youth about how to have a good time, yet simultaneously "preached" to them about how much they needed God; POD became the ethnic Creed.
The thing that really bugs me the most about Project 86 was that they were THE band that had the most potential out of POD and them. They had the front man, they had the sound, they had the lyrics. And most of all, they had the conviction that POD seemed to shed away once the idea of more money showed itself. But, sadly, this has gone and Project 86 has lost their edge. But have no fear, they still have Drawing Black Lines and their Self-Titled albums for their fans.
I give Drawing Black Lines four stars because of the tracks Star and Twenty-Three. They are a complete waste of listening time. Scrap both of these songs and you have an album that is arguably harder and better-produced. But because the Self-Titled has not one skippable track, and this album does, I can say without any doubt in my mind that the Self-Titled is better. Also, the lyrics for the Self-Titled are head and shoulders above Drawing Black Line's lyricism. Stars and Twenty-Three are songs that showed Project 86 experimenting with their sound. It didn't work then, and it doesn't work now. On to the tracks.
Tracks 1-6 are the albums meat and potatoes. Those songs are, Stein's Theme, One Armed Man, Me Against Me, PS, Set Me Up, and Chimes. And are up there with anything off of the Self-Titled album. After those six songs, the remaining four songs (I am excluding Star and Twenty-Three) are just good hard-rock songs. Those four songs are, A Toast to My Former Self, Sad Machines, Chapter 2, and Open Hand. The last four are anthemic in nature, as in they repeat themselves alot. Especially the songs Chapter 2 and Open Hand.
All in all, this is a good release. But not as good as the Self-Titled. Also, as I read some of the reviews I noticed a review posted by FunnyBobKavlin stating that the lyrics were about suicide and what not. This is the problem when a band like Project 86 begins the process of selling out, their music starts appealing to people who don't actually listen to the music and the lyrics, but just whether or not it is catchy and mainstream. To correct FunnyBobKavlin. The song in which the character is speaking about slitting wrists, is titled Me Against Me. The line is "Slitting our wrists/running for sympathy" now, I don't expect people like FunnyRobert to get this. This is actually a statement of the nature of human beings. It is about the sinful nature of people. Slitting your wrists and running for sympathy a metaphor for how incredibly self-destructive people are to themselves and those around them, and that after a person does something like this, they always want sympathy from God; they want forgiveness. It is a simple statement of the evil nature of people. FunnyRobert also mentioned a line from the song Chimes. Chimes is about a person who has died and gone to hell and how, when he was alive, everything that his flesh wanted seemed OK. But once he had died he wished he could "rewind the clock and attempt to play back" which means that he wishes he could live his life over again and not do all of the things that were tempting him.
Like I said, this music is not for the masses and it really bugs me that they have tried to make it for the masses. I know they want to get their music and message out, but what a lot of people don't realize is that the majority they are seeking to get their message to are more like FunnyBobKavlin. They don't understand it.

This cd is frickin amazing. I just recently saw them in concert and it reminded me to get this cd out and listen to it Me Against Me is a such an great song. Then again just about everysong on this cd is awesome

Album Description
Night Of Your Return is one of Fernando Ortega's most personal and authentic albums of his career. When Fernando's inspiring original melodies are joined with the thought-provoking lyrics of Elaine Rubenstein, it results in a listening experience that truly touches the heart. In what has become Fernando's own award winning style, his soothing voice is beautifully augmented with a nine-foot Steinway grand piano, strings, Celtic harp, mandolin, occasional acoustic and electric guitar plus other wonderful textures! This is one of Fernando's BEST!

The best Christian CD I've ever found.......2007-05-09
Learn the lyrics of track 1, then sing them to the Lord from a pure heart while listening - you'll NEVER be the same!
I'm tearing up as I type this.
I buy this CD in lots of 5 and 10 at a time any more because I always end up giving them away to people I want to bless.
This CD such a rich blessing! In my opinion even unbelievers could come to faith by listening to track 1.
And yes, the entire CD is awesome too.
Enlivens the Soul.......2005-11-25
Fernando Ortega brings yet another thoughtful work of worshipful evocative music! Night of Your Return is perfect for relaxing with a great inspirational book (my recommendation would be Brennan Manning's "The Ragamuffin Gospel: Good News for the Bedraggled, Beat-Up, and Burnt Out) and a delicious cup of coffee. As with other Fernando Ortega projects Celtic harps, mandolins, acoustic and electric guitars bring a glorious sound for your listening pleasure. Get this CD, get everything Fernando Ortega does! Songs include:
My Song Is Love Unknown; Praise To The Lord, The Almighty; Night Of Your Return; Mi Abuelito; Chimayo; Jesus, Lover Of My Soul; Here Is Love; Road Song; Stricken, Smitten And Afflicted; This Is My Father's World; Green Pastures
My Favorite Artist, My Favorite CD.......2003-01-12
Fernando Ortega's Night of your return is so full of insight, beauty, poetry and Jesus. Just the title makes me feel good.
Fernando Ortega mixes songs about loved ones lost with songs about his most beloved Jesus Christ. Please buy this CD, close the door, turn down the light, disconnect the phone and enjoy. A most wonderful collection of songs it will surely become one of your favorites too!

Time Lines marks the return to Blue Note of one of the label's great originals, with Hill retaining the edgy intensity that marked such '60s masterpieces as Black Fire and Judgment. As pianist, composer, and bandleader, Hill has a special talent for creating structural tensions that stimulate fresh improvisations. You hear it in the title track as saxophonist Greg Tardy and trumpeter Charles Tolliver (another veteran of the 1960s) weave through Hill's minefield of compound rhythms and dissonant chords to make their own powerful statements. Tardy's mastery of clarinet and bass clarinet adds to Hill's rich palette of instrumental colors, while bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson contribute to the dynamic flow of polyrhythms. Whether it's the joyous playfulness of "Smooth," the taut and spiky "Ry Round 1," or the welling emotional depths of the solo piano version of "Malachi," every track bears the stamp of Hill's creativity and commitment. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
A fitting swan-song to a genius of modern jazz piano.......2007-05-29
Blue Note Records founders Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff considered Andrew Hill to be "the next Thelonious Monk."
During his initial tenure with the label from 1963 to '70, Hill worked with some of the genre's most adventurous musicians, a factor which contributed to the pianist being able to immediately bring his musical vision to full fruition.
Through a string of classic records such as "Judgment!," "Smokestack" and "Point of Departure," to name just a few, Hill earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the most compelling composers and pianists to emerge in the post-bop era.
Returning to the newly re-launched Blue Note in 1989, Hill recorded a pair of albums that introduced saxophonist Greg Osby (who remains with the label 16 albums later). The past few years have seen him release a couple of wonderful discs - "Beautiful Day" and "Dusk" - for Palmetto.
Now at the age of 68 and battling cancer, the pianist comes full circle as he embarks on his third Blue Note era. Leading a quintet that includes front-line trumpeter Charles Tolliver and saxophonist/clarinetist Greg Tardy, along with a rhythm section of bassist John Herbert and drummer Eric McPherson, Hill's newest offering, "Time Lines" (due in stores Feb. 21) regales listeners with his engaging brand of supremely cerebral jazz, offering up a tantalizing introduction to the latest chapter of his storied career.
One of Hill's compositional calling cards is to eschew the obvious. Renowned as a master of "thinking man's" jazz, the pianist rewards astute listeners on these seven new original compositions as he continues to craft tunes that balance angular themes and interesting voicings against a spacious backdrop which imbues the proceedings with an air of understatement tempered with a gentle edge.
Among the many highlights is the title track, its buoyant lyricism and unfettered joy recalling South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim. Cast in an unusual 11/8 time signature and propelled by McPherson's skittering drums, Hill punctuates the tune with single notes and tasty clusters. Even as he sits out most of Tardy's sax solo - a move only a master would conceive and employ - he greatly varies and enhances the aesthetic of the tune.
Elsewhere, he pays homage to friend and colleague Malachi Favors Maghostut, bassist and founding member of the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, as he bookends the disc with an opening ensemble version of "Malachi" and a poignant solo reading to close.
"Ry Round 1" and "Ry Round 2" epitomize the creative, improvisatory spirit of jazz, as well as its power and potential in the hands of masters. Recorded a week apart, these two ensemble versions of the music are vastly different - the former is dark and foreboding as it is built on a spare ostinato bass figure and in straight 4/4 time while the latter alternates between 5/4 and 4/4 and digs a deeper groove, evoking a considerably more playful mood.
This is an essential CD which should be a part of every worthwhile jazz listening library.

The music comes from hidden places and becomes illumination itself...
or maybe its just an uncharted journey of a liberated soul?
Listen. Feel.

Hats Off To Andrew.......2007-04-13
Wow. All seven quintet tracks are luxurious - in length, in texture, in melancholy. Greg Tardy's bass clarinet seems like the perfect marriage of Jimmy Hamilton and Eric Dolphy. Charles Tolliver is a revelation - where has he hid all these years? Eric McPherson's drums are brilliantly tuned: snare and toms like Roy Haynes, cymbals like Billy Higgins, bass drum like Peter Gabriel(!) - it's wonderful. Brings to mind certain tracks on the exquisite Greg Osby 2000 release "Invisible Hand" which features Andrew's playing prominently (along with two comps). Perhaps I'll think of more to add to this review later, probably not. Words fall far short in the service of attempts to describe such unique beauty, though I can share one serendipitous discovery... try pulling out some of your favorite Kurt Vonnegut while Time Lines makes the background rich, wallow in reflectivity, smile.
african american offering.......2007-02-27
the tune, melody, theme, of the title tune, time lines, i can't get out of my mind, the last noncommercial jazz tune that had that effect on me was miles davis' nefertiti. the song is african influenced.
other songs are mellow. the playing is superb, the solos by the horns, hill's playing simply elegant, hebert on bass joins mcpherson on drums, which is marvelous playing, mcpherson at times sounds as if he's beating african drums.
Jazz record of the year!.......2006-12-23
A stunning and gorgeous recording!! As good as any of his 60's Blue Note records.

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.
