Amazon.com essential recording

This robust collection is as good a place as any to start for those interested in revisiting Kenny Rogers's long, glorious run on the country and pop charts through the 1970s and early 1980s. It includes early countrified milestone hits like "Lucille" and "The Gambler," as well as later pop-flavored outings like "Lady" and "You Decorated My Life." It's rounded out with a sampling of the smooth pop duets he recorded with leading ladies like Sheena Easton ("We've Got Tonight"), Kim Carnes ("Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer"), and the late Dottie West ("'Till I Can Make It on My Own"). All told, this is among the strongest of the many single-CD compilations that have been culled from Rogers's long, prolific, and varied career. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Check your CD's & downloads before you buy.......2007-01-07

I love Kenny Rogers music and almost made the mistake of purchasing this one. Fortunately I double checked my CD list and found that I already had the "25 Greatest Hits" CD. the "20 Greatest Hits" CD is exactly the same except the last 5 songs have been cut out. The CD covers are even the same. The missing songs are:

Abraham, Martin & John/Precious Memories
Love Is What We Make It
Green Green Grass of Home
Desperado
Sweet Music Man

If you can't find the "25 Greatest Hits" then definetly go with with the "20"... it's great music. However - check your CD's first & make sure that you don't already have the "25". Either way, it's Kenny Rogers music and these were all from his best period. Also, if you don't already have it, the "Water & Bridges" CD (his newest) is very good.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better Kenny Rogers CD. you can't go wrong with Kenny Rogers greatest hits CDs........2006-10-13

First I just want to say that I'm a big fan of Kenny Rogers so I might be biased but I'll try to be objective.

You pretty much get most of Kenny Rogers greatest songs. but if you are a Kenny Rogers fan, you might want to also check the "42 Ultimate hits" album and the "21 Number ones". There are a lot of overlap though some with different version of the songs. I like this CD a lot too and I don't think you can go wrong by buying any Kenny Rogers Greatest hits CDs..

I like about 80% of the songs in this CD..

Lots of beautiful love songs in this CD: Through the years, Island in the stream, You decorated my life, She believes in me, Love will turn you around, We'ge got tonight etc..

For Kenny Roger's new fan, check out "21 Number Ones" album (this CD), "the greatest hit" album and the "Kenny Rogers live by request". Also check the new CD Water and Bridges. The song "I can't unlove you" is a hit.

Here are some of my all time Kenny Rogers favorite songs (almost all of them available in the "21 Number Ones" album. I call this list, Kenny Rogers essential:

The Gambler
Through The Years
Lady
Lucille
Coward of The County
We've Got Tonight (with Sheena Easton)
Crazy
Islands In The Stream (with Dolly Parton)
She Believes In Me
You Decorated My Life
Make No Mistake, She's Mine (with Ronnie Milsap)
Daytime Friends
Love Or Something Like It
Love Will Turn You Around
Morning Desire
The Factory
Twenty years ago
Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer (with Kim Carnes)
Ruby, Don't take your love to town
Buried treasure
I don't call him daddy
She's ready for someone to love her

Updated Dec 15th:
I went to see Kenny Rogers live recently (his greatest hits and chrismas song concert.) I had a blast, simply amazing. I recommend all Kenny Rogers fans to visit his concert Live at least once. (We never know how many more years he will do his tour but I do hope for many more years to come)

5 out of 5 stars great greatest hits.......2006-08-30

Many greatest hits albums make you wonder who was picking the songs, but not this one. All of the tunes are great if you like Kenny Rogers at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2006-03-14

It came in on time and was a gift for my mother and she is really enjoying it! Thank you for the fast service!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good For A Single Disc Compilation!.......2005-12-20

Yes, the sound quality could have been a tad bit better, but it's not like the CD's unlistenable or anything. The CD clocks in around 73 minutes and the song selection is great, so that kind of makes up for the sound. Every single song is great! Some of the later classics are missing, but I'm pretty sure this hit collection was made back in 83' so that explains that.

This would be the only single disc of Kenny Rogers I'd recommend. I actually recommend getting his 42 Ultimate Hits instead, but if you don't want more than one disc, this is definitely the one to get. You oughta listen to Ultimate Ronnie Milsap and Lionel Richie's Definitive Collection too, if you like Kenny!

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Rogers fan.......2007-06-10

I actually have this on a record not a cd. I love the record. It has all my favorite Kenny Rogers' songs on it.
This album, whether you have it on record format or cd format, is a must for all Kenny Rogers' fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother of Greatest Hits Albums!.......2005-01-28

This has got to be one of my favorite greatest hits albums from Kenny Rogers! I remember back when I was 4 years old and my uncle bought this album when it was actually on record. This was my first experience with listening to Kenny. My uncle just bought it to see if he liked him or not. But I was hooked from day one! When I got my first cassette player a few years later, this album was the very first cassette I got! And then eventually I bought the album again on CD! This is a must for any Kenny Rogers fan and for those just finding out who Kenny Rogers is! Not to mention this album has sold over 22 million copies world wide! It sold over 12 million in this country alone! And has earned Kenny his first and only Diamond Award for selling over 10 million of any one album!

5 out of 5 stars Twelve timeless classics from one of the true greats.......2004-05-07

The early 1980s was a strange musical time period. As a child, I didn't really know that pop and country were distinct genres because the local radio station played songs of both types all the time. My favorite singers around 1981 were Stevie Wonder and Kenny Rogers - weird, huh? Kenny Rogers was huge back then, though. Lucille, Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town, Coward of the County, Long Arm of the Law - these are great cross-over hits that made Kenny Rogers a star. Then there was The Gambler, a song so popular and enjoyable that it spawned a TV movie (as did Coward of the County). The kicker, though, was the song Lady (a song written and produced by Lionel Richie); I had a teacher who would melt at the very thought of this song, and I myself, a lad barely past the "cooties" stage of growing up, pretended to woo the young ladies with my own rendition of the song (in the utter privacy of my room, of course).

As an adult, I have an even greater appreciation of the songs included on this album. She Believes in Me is one of those rare ballads that speaks directly to your heart; it's a great tribute to all the women who put up with all of us men who don't deserve their love. A man doesn't want to admit he needs anything or anybody, but the love and trust of a good woman means much more than most men would ever admit. Just ask the husband of Lucille, who finds himself trying to raise four children by himself after his wife picks "a fine time to leave" him. You Decorated My Life is a beautiful homage to the miraculous life-giving power of love, and Love the World Away works the same kind of wonders. Lady, of course, is one of the greatest love songs ever recorded.

Story songs were one of Kenny Rogers' greatest strengths. Virtually everyone is familiar with the story of The Gambler. Coward of the County illustrates the point that, while you don't have to fight to become a man, sometimes you do have to fight when you are a man (especially when some ruffians hurt the woman you love). Long Arm of the Law is a rather moving song; here, a judge is determined to punish the young man who got his daughter pregnant - until the face of his new grandson softens his heart. Then there's Reuben James, who is still walking the fertile fields of our minds; there's plenty of giddy-up in this tribute to an ordinary, hard-working black man. Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town goes in yet a different direction, presenting us with an injured Vietnam veteran struggling to keep his marriage intact. This album also includes two duets. The husky-voiced Kim Carnes teams up with Kenny to deliver the energetic, pop-oriented Don't Fall In Love With a Dreamer, then the incomparable Dottie West joins Kenny for Everytime Two Worlds Collide, a classic country duet.

I'm not what you would call a country fan, but Kenny Rogers is much more than a country singer; he represents country, pop, and contemporary music all rolled up in one distinctive voice. This is a singer who still appeals to different generations of listeners. The great success Kenny Rogers enjoyed in the late 1970s and early 1980s can best be seen by his continued fame today, many years since his last bona fide hit song. Certainly, there are better, more complete Kenny Rogers collections out there than this one (which was released in 1980, after all, long before Kenny stopped releasing chart-topping hits), but I can't say anything bad about an album containing twelve songs of such high caliber and lasting appeal.

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only.......2003-01-07

This is the Kenny's Greatest Hits your Mama had on 8-Track. I think it sold like 7 million copies. It's got the best selection of songs from his late 70s / early 80s heyday. The only shortfall of this recording is the fidelity. Not much of an improvement over the 8-track. Always a favorite party CD. Pick this one up first and then go for one of the Kenny and th First Edition collections.

5 out of 5 stars I introduced Kenny to Lionel Richie in Las Vegas........1999-08-29

In 1980 Kenny (Rogers) wanted to do a soul album and was hoping to get some famous R&B groups to back him up. One night between shows, Bob Smith - the Riviera's stage manager - came to the dressing room and told me that Lionel Richie and The Commodores were downstairs and wanted to see Kenny. I brought them up and they told Kenny they were his biggest fans. Lionel had written a song for Kenny and wanted to play it for him. Kenny said he'd love to hear it and Lionel walked over to the piano. It was a magical moment. The song was "Lady" and the rest is history. "Lady" was on Kenny's Greatest Hits without having been on any other album. This set a precedent in country music which everyone has since copied. -- Garth Shaw

This is the greatest cd by Kenny Rogers. My husband isn't a country fan but he loves this cd.He is listening to it all the time.If I had to pick a favorite song I would pick "LOVE THE WORLD AWAY" When we were married that was the song we chose to dance our first dance as husband and wife.My husband loves "Coward Of The County" I guess I would have to say every song has become my favorite because Kenny Rogers is the greatest singer on the planet. He is a pure gold singer to me. I love all his songs that he sings.Ilove the new one also "By Me A Rose". The older he gets the better I think he looks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Million-Selling Classic from the country music king, Kenny Rogers........2006-01-09

"Kenny Rogers & The First Editions Greatest Hit's", has now topped millions of sales in the United States, earning an RIAA Platinum award. Of course, Kenny Rogers And The First Edition have been no strangers to fame, since they achieved a string of top hit's in the 60's and 70's that are collected here.

"Ruby" was one of the first singles I ever got and I'm delighted to now hear it on this breasted CD without tape hiss or clicks and pops. I also like "Something's Burning" (very erotic lyrics), "Good Time", "Tell It All Brother" and "Reuben James".

5 Star rating!

5 out of 5 stars Great Golden Oldies .......2006-01-04

Kenny Rogers is the best in country music with a long run of hit records and cd's. This is some of his best music, recorded with the first edition in the 1960's, he would later become an even bigger star without them in the 1970's, but that doesn't mean this music is anything to overlook, as great as his solo material is.

From the electric "Just Dropped In" to the easy on the ear ballad "Someone Who Cares" to the bubble gum 60's pop of "Good Time Liberator", through the world-wide number one hit "Ruby", there is something here for every taste.

This is the original hit's album. Everyone is a winner. In the 1960's and 1970's more than 20 million copies of the first editions records were sold, today that total is closer to 80 million. This is a fine collection of country, pop, easy listening and hard rockers. A must for any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Album.......2005-11-01

This album features music recorded between the years of 1967 and 1974. It is a fine collection of great songs. I do agree though with some of the other comments that this group made a heck of a lot of classic oldies and it would be great to see more of them on compact disc. As it happens most of the groups material has at some time or other been on CD, but not usually in the origanal album format, but as part of many complations.

Great classics that didn't make this one include "It's A Crazy Afternoon", "Then I Miss You", "Mamas Waiting" (Rogers later did this as a solo act - i think that version is even better), "Goodtime Liberator", "Mission Of San Nohero", "Calico Silver", "Hurry Up Love", etc, etc.

Notheless this CD is great and features all eight of the bands top 40 singles such as "Reuben James", "Heed The Call" and their world beating chart-topper "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town".

3 out of 5 stars searching..........2005-07-04

All of your compilation of Kenny Rogers and the first edition is marvelous, but I'm looking to one particular album tittle FOOL'S Sound tract from the movie Fool's with the best selling single " Someone Who Cares " & "Anais Song " I hope you would include this album record in your list.

3 out of 5 stars Kenny Rogers & 1st Edition ~ "HALF of Their Greatest Hits".......2004-09-30

ABSOLUTELY, NOT ONE OF ANY OF THE CURRENT 'GREATEST HITS' OR 'ANTHOLOGY' REISSUES LISTED AS EITHER 'KENNY ROGERS & THE FIRST EDITION' OR 'KENNY ROGERS' OFFERS A FULL [OR EVEN 'HALF' FULL] SELECTION OF THIS GROUPS EARLY, PRIME MATERIAL! I HAVE EMAILED THE OFFICIAL KENNY ROGERS WEBSITE IN REGARDS TO OFFERING A MORE COMPLETE 'FIRST EDITION' RETROSPECTIVE AND THEY JUST KINDLY [IN A COUNTRY-KINDA-WAY] BLEW ME OFF, STATING THEY SHOWED NO INTEREST ... WHATSOEVER ... IN THAT MATERIAL! GRANTED THE REMAINING UNRELEASED [IGNORED] RECORDINGS WERE NOT "MAJOR" HITS FOR THE GROUP, BUT IN RETROSPECT THEY WERE INDEED IMPORTANT SINGLE RELEASES ... AND A FEW OF THEM WERE ACTUALLY VERY, VERY GOOD SONGS! EXAMPLES: "TULSA TURNAROUND", "CAMPTOWN LADIES", "CALICO SILVER", "CHARLIE FER DE LANCE", "MAMMA'S WAITING" ... TO NAME THE MORE IMPORTANT SONGS! ALSO, WHY HAS THERE NEVER BEEN A CD RE-ISSUE OF THEIR CLASSIC "BALLAD OF CALICO" DOUBLE-ALBUM??!! THIS ALBUM WAS A VERY IMPORTANT RECORDING!! IT WAS ONE OF THE VERY FIRST 'CONCEPT' ALBUMS EVER RECORDED, AND IT CONTAINS A BOUNTY OF BEAUTIFUL WESTERN/COUNTRY SONGS - ALL OF WHICH WERE WRITTEN BY THE LEGENDARY "MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHEY". TRULY A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS WHEN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY NOT ONLY IGNORES IT IMPORTANT MOMENTS, BUT BLOWS-OFF ITS FANS!

I wish I could say I really loved this CD. But it's actually not what I expected. Probably this is due to the fact that I was misled by the listing appearing on the page. What I was sent was the album KENNY ROGERS - 20 GREAT HITS. It includes indeed 20 tracks, but I wouldn't call them 'Great Hits.' The tracks that appear on this CD are the following:1.Ruby, don't take your love to town; 2.Poem for my little lady; 3.For the good times; 4.Good lady of Toronto; 5.Where does Rosie go; 6.Me and Bobby McGee; 7.What am I gonna do; 8.All Go's lovely children; 9.Lay it down; 10.Tulsa turnaround; 11.Sunshine; 12.Goodtime liberator; 13.Reuben James; 14.Always leaving, always gone; 15.Elvira; 16.Shine on Ruby Mountain; 17.Loser; 18.Homemade Lie; 19.Ticket to Nowhere; 20.Ruby, don't take your love to town

5 out of 5 stars Kenny just gets better as time goes on.......2006-08-18

This CD by Kenny Rogers is a very good compilation of his second greatest hits CD. Islands In The Stream with Dolly is my wife's and my favorite song of theirs. This song came out when we were getting married and we have loved it ever since. Another good duet is the one with Ronnie Milsap, Make No Mistake, She's Mine. Morning Desire is a little risque and so is the video for the song but I do not care it is still a good song. Twenty Years Ago is about a person who hasn't been in his hometown for 20 years and he can't believe how much it has changed. A very good ballad on this CD is Crazy. The way Kenny Rogers sings it can tear your heart out and he can do that with some of his songs. What About Me with Kim Carnes and James Ingram is a good song with good harmony vocals that can give you chills. Other songs on this CD are I Prefer The Moonlight, Tomb Of The Unknown Love, The Factory and Evening Star. All these songs are also good. Kenny always makes good music.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Super Hit's.......2005-03-07

An early collection of Kenny Rogers songs while he was the lad singer of Country-Pop group, First Edition.

    1. Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town

This song, more than 35 years later, remains one of Rogers best know songs and that's saying something as he has recorded many more great songs such as "Reuben James", "The Gambler", "The Greatest", "Crazy In Love", "Coward Of The County" and many more since.

    2. Something's Burning

A nice fusion of Country, Pop, Rock and Disco.

    3. Me and Bobby McGee

A Country Classic, recorded by many singers both pop and country. My favourite version. A sad song with an upbeat arrangement.

    4. Elvira

This is the original version of the song with a very disco-country feel. Later covered by the Oak Ridge Boys.

    5. Goodtime Liberator

A classic album cut by The First Edition, originally on the 1969 album "Ruby".

    6. Reuben James

Also from 1969's "Ruby". One of my favourite songs. About the loss of a loved friend who will always be alive in your heart. A major hit single in 1969.

    7. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)
Kenny Rogers and The First Editions first top 40 hit. Psyedelic Country at it's finest

    8. Shine on Ruby Mountain

A very popular song, also one of their best. Powerful vocal performance.

    9. Sunshine

Another popular tune. Rogers later re-recorded this solo in the 1990s.

    10. Ticket to Nowhere

A classic album cut, from their 1967 debut.

This album costs less than $6, therefore it is great value. Most singers charge $20 for albums much worse than this. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars A below average collection of the First Edition's hits.......2003-12-18

I was never a big fan of Kenny Rogers, but I sure remember when the First Edition aired on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." In fact, although it is long gone, I remember an issue of the Smothers Brothers publicity newspaper that talked about how Tommy Smothers had "discovered" the group. Certainly the Brothers Smothers got the First Edition their first national exposure (they did the same for Simon & Garfunkle; whatever happened to them?). Of course the very best of these songs have been preserved on several Kenny Rogers albums, which makes sense because there was a point where the group was transformed into Kenny Rogers & the First Edition. So, there are lots of discs with "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town," "Reuben James," and "Just Dropped in (To See What Condition My Condition Is In)." However, where this particular collection falls a bit short is in terms of the next level of hits from this group. It has "Something's Burning," but not "Heed the Call" and "But You Know I Love You." It does have "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Elvira," but at that point we are getting away from Kenny Rogers and the First Edition and just doing covers. With only four of the six best songs, this is a below average hits collection. Keep looking because you can find several better ones.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah, yeah--oh yeah, my condition my condition was in..........2000-07-18

...bubble gum psychedelica. From who--? Kenny Rogers and the First Edition? You bet. It also have my favorite country pop tune "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" and the chart topper "Something's Burning". It's good music, ya'll.
