Customer Reviews:
GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13
I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!
cute for kids.......2006-08-13
I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.
Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25
This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.
A gem!.......2006-01-23
I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.
One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03
This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

Album Description
Music of the West and the Western movies, sung and played by the remarkable Nickel Creek Band, consisting of Chris Thile ( age 12 and now with 2 solo bluegrass mandolin albums by the age of 18), Sara Watkins (age 11 at the time),Sean Watkins (age 15), and Scott Thile (Chris' dad.) Great, vivid interpretations of America's cowboy standards, sung and played by children. Kids love to hear other kids singing, and adults will be entertained, and astonished by the singing and playing abilities of the Nickel Creek Band. (By the way, 6 years later, they're still together, and making a bluegrass (newgrass) record of their own music, produced by bluegrass great Alison Krauss.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD for Little Kids.......2007-06-08
It is not often that one can hear their favorite band singing as little kids. That is exactly what you get on this CD. Nickel Creek, known for it's folksy, soft melodies made this CD when they were all between 10 and 14. Now, if you are not into little kids singing high notes, then maybe this CD isn't for you. My niece and nephew love it. They even want to be cowboys someday too! If you love Nickel Creek, its worth it to get this CD.
Nickel Creek were already brilliant musicians as pre-teens.......2007-02-14
This CD is for the Nickel Creek fan who
A)already has all the other cds, and
B) Enjoys the "traditional Country/Western roots" that their music evolved from...or
C)is a parent or grandparent wanting some 'safe' and fun music to share with kids with NO element of today's 'trashy' side....
They are doing classic "gene Autry' style cowboy tunes from an era long since past....the band members are all between 10 and 12 years old on this album.(except a dad who helps out) Their performance is consistently flashy and their playing and singing could only be called 'virtuoso'.....Keep in mind, however that this is Nickel Creek BEFORE they were heavily influenced by everyone from Radiohead to the Beatles.......this is music for KIDS to enjoy, but it is neither modern/current, nor does it bear resemblance to the latest bluegrass/modern rock hybrid that we SOOOOOO love them for.

Nickel Creek Origins..........2007-01-20
I purchased this CD shortly after finding out that Nickel Creek would be disolving their union as a band. I hoped that this collection would be suitable for both myself (as a strong supporter of Nickel Creek) and my two children. This CD honestly fails to deliver a suitable substitution for the music that Nickel Creek produced over the past 7 years. Although, I guess that was an unrealistic expectation to have for this CD. You have to keep in mind that the members of Nickel Creek were just children themselves when they released this CD. I don't believe that they had found their true musical identity, and they obviously wouldn't have reached their full musical potential yet. This CD isn't really the best for a todler either, so I have to say that this purchase was a let down overall.
Starting Point.......2007-01-09
Considering their ages when this disc was recorded....there is only one word to describe "AMAZING"
Great cd for kids!.......2007-01-03
My 6 year old nephew loved this cd, but I have another 5 year old nephew that didn't like the "I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart" and gave his away!!!
The whole cd will not make mom go crazy listening to it over and over.
Well, maybe the 100th time will make her crazy, but the rest of the time she will sing along!

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi

And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

Tumble-N-Tunes is a Great CD.......2005-10-06
My son, who is almost 2 years old, loves the Tumble-N-Tunes CD. After I purchased the CD, my son wanted to play it all the time. We play the CD in a portable CD player so he can control how many times he wants to hear each song. He has played the CD non-stop for multiple hours at a time.
My son especially likes the songs "Tumble-n-Tune", "Pop-n-Hop", "Balance Beam-n", "Do the Bump!" and the "Tumble-n-Cheer!". During the song "Pop-n-Hop", he will go to the cupboard, where we keep the plastic grocery bags, and throw the bags around while he is jumping. When the "Balance-Beam-n" song comes on he walks on this piece of wood that joins our tile and wood floors together. When the song "Do the Bump!" starts, my son runs to find his tambourine and marches around playing the tambourine.
The songs are upbeat and are all different. I also like the songs because the words are easy to hear and understand. Even my son, who is not even two, understands the words in the songs. When the song says "jump" or "turn around" my son will perform these actions. In the song "Walk like the Animals" different animals are mentioned and whenever my son hears the word "elephant" he will do the hand sign for elephant.
Great for young children.......2003-03-23
I was looking for something to give to my five yr.old grandson.
I rarely get to spend any time with him, so I wanted something we could do together. Tumble n Tunes was great. He took to it right off. As an instructional CD it was very easy to follow and he had a ball. Frankly , so did I. Even after I was worn out,he continued and even added some of his own {Dancing} routine.
Aaron is now totally interested in tumbling and gymnastics.
Just the other day my son called to thank me again for finding it. He says that Aaron takes it to school now and the whole class
follows it. The teacher has asked for a copy--I'm looking forward to finding a video on the site soon.
Aaron calls it granpa's CD and at least for now it's his favorite.
That alone makes my heart stronger. Thanks Dayle and Renah
Tumble-N-Tunes is FUN!.......2003-03-11
Everyday, my children ask me to play this FUN CD. They sing, jump around and share it with their friends. I purchased another just to keep in the car! We love it!

Even Baby's Love Them.......2006-07-08
My baby Casey was 10 months old, unable to walk, but she could stand against the couch and shake her legs to "Big, Bad, Billy." My Church gave me inspirtation to help with our outreach ministry. My family loves to sing along with "Go Fish."
Warning to Parents.......2006-01-10
Music is upbeat but content is deceiving. It appears to be a Christian tape, but some songs were disturbing. "Lady Bug" is about a little boy that fries bugs with a magnifying glass. The majority of the song focuses on gross details with a brief tag that the boy is a thug. (Little boys are more likely to pick up on the how too's of bug incineration.) Very concerned with "My own Church". It encourages the mindset that corporate worship is on the same level as going to a circus. It is disrespectful and in poor taste. The artists are talented, but trying to appear not to take their faith too seriously so they appeal to secular market as well. Dissappointing at best, if you were looking for a good Christian cd.

Album Description
Hoover's Hoo-Ever collects 13 covers, most originally appearing on various tribute albums; several are unique to this album. All are gold. Klaatu's "Silly Boys" is a natural for the self-confessed Klaatu maniac; his reading of the song, essentially Klaatu's "Anus of Uranus" presented backwards, is glorious fun. Hoover reinvents Todd Rundgren's "Izzat Love?" as an ever-so-slowed-down lover's plea, breathing new life into the tune. Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly" is a love letter to one of the greatest pop songs ever written; this version originally appeared on the Van DeLecki's Ebum Shoobum Shoobum album.
Injecting a healthy dose of Queen's Brian May into Percy Faith's rendition of "Theme from A Summer Place," Hoover ramps up the percussion attack and fuzzes up the guitars, to great success. Now, a new generation can make out on Lover's Lane, saints be praised. The traditional "Barbara Allen" gets a warm, respectful, folkish turn, centered around Hoover's accomplished mandolin playing.
On an album chock full of keepers, there are two, absolutely mind-blowing out-of-the-park home runs: the Beatles' "Goodnight" gets the mandolin treatment alongside some of the most gorgeous harmonies this side of sleepy time. And Hoover's version of Bobby Fuller's "It's Love, Come What May" is the absolute gold standard of cover versions of any song: beautifully reimagined, creatively arranged, and song with gusto as only Hoover can.

Fun, Upbeat Covers Album.......2005-05-24
I don't know much about Jamie Hoover's previous work, but I am going to look into it after hearing this fun and enjoyable covers album. I've bought plenty of very interesting tribute projects, some very hit and miss, but this one reverse the model: a collection of contributions to various tribute albums by a single performer. His taste in music is excellent (let me rephrase: it's in keeping with my tastes)-- Beatles, Jeff Lynne, Klaatu, Todd Rundgren, Everly Brothers etc. His versions are intriguing and fun, very high-spirited, with washes of guitar and tight multi-layered harmonies. I especially like his update on Sukiyaki and a brilliant a capella version of You Were on My Mind. Well worth the purchase price, now it's time to check out the rest of Jamie's catalogue....

Album Description
Winner of the coveted Parents' Choice Approved Award, June 2002! "A sumptuous collection." - Parenting Magazine, August 2002 --- Composed and arranged by Sir J.W. Elliott, "Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs" was first published in the 1870s in London and quickly became a fond part of childhood for millions of children for more than a century. Recital singer Robin Hendrix presents the first recording of this wonderful music just as Sir James conceived it. The songs contain lyrics from Mother Goose's nursery rhymes and from popular English children's poems. The CD cover is an eight-panel foldout containing some of the charming engravings created especially for this music by the famed Dalziel Brothers studio. This recording is a unique and delightful means of introducing good music to young children.
At the time this music was composed, the nursery rhymes were already well known in England, but the new settings helped establish the collection as a national treasure. In addition to the nursery rhymes, the nursery songs give a charming glimpse of an idealized childhood at the height of the Victorian period. Some songs show the gentle humor of the time ("Three Children Sliding"), while others were used to convey morals ("Maggie's Pet", "Mother Tabbyskins"). The quality of compositions like "When the Snow is on the Ground" and "The Spider and the Fly" brings to mind composers like Schubert and Gilbert & Sullivan.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect example for Victorian times.......2007-05-15
This is just what I was looking for. If you're looking for simple nursery rhymes for your child to listen and learn; this is not the one. This is more sophisticated, and a better example of music in Victorian times.
great exposure for children.......2005-06-11
I think some people may have missed the point. This cd is victorian era nursery rhymes sung and arranged wonderfully, it is NOT Barney. Children will love it. I am a Children's Librarian and play this cd before story times. The children are very interested and entertained. This is a great chance to introduce classical music to children and help to enrich their lives. Give it a chance, it will help round out your children's experiences, and likely your own as well.
probably not what you want.......2003-11-25
I was looking for a simple CD of classic nursery songs play for and sing with my daughter. This is a classical music CD of a particular songbook from the 19th century - well sung, and perhaps kids might like listening to it, but it's not what I wanted. She could be singing Schubert for all you know - they're definitely not kiddy tunes. If you're looking for simple, classic, sing-a-longs, keep looking (I'm still looking! Why is everything either off the mark, like this CD, or adulterated with "original, fresh" looks at old tunes, how about just a normal CD of normal songs! I can't remember them after 30 years, but I'd like to). Incidentally, while I recognized some of the song titles, these are different versions.
Nursery Rhymes and Nursery Songs, Robin Hendrix.......2003-10-28
I wasn't able to listen to any tracks of this CD before buying it. Now that I've removed the plastic and listened, I can't return it, so thought I'd at least warn others. I was expecting more of a folk style, and this is classical, almost operatic music. I like classical music and even opera, but found it really awful in this context. We only listened to about 5 minutes in the car before I had to turn it off. My son (almost 2), however, was laughing. Maybe he likes it. I'll be sure to read more reviews and listen to lots of tracks in the future.
YUK!!!!.......2003-10-21
I was SOOOO disappointed. I checked my order to make sure I actually got the right CD?!??!?
It sounds like opera. A woman singing the rhymes in such a high pitched voice and you can barely understand what she is saying. For young children, you want something sinmple clear and fun. This is boring- they all sound alike. I think maybe a scholar would like this CD, but certaintly not young children. (...)!!I can't believe all the excellent reviews and how misled I was.

Clarinet Jazz by a Master.......2001-09-18
Chuck Hedges is better known in the Chicago-Milwaukee area and on the traditional jazz festival circuit than nationwide, but he deserves border-to-border recognition as one of the top clarinetists anywhere. "Just for Fun," his second CD for Arbors Records, features nearly 70 minutes of fine jazz by Hedges, pianist Eddie Higgins, bassist Paul Keller and drummer Ed Metz Jr.Tunes include "Night and Day," "You Stepped Out of a Dream," "Soon," "Black Butterfly," "Deep Purple" and the title track. Hedges, who toured Europe with the late Wild Bill Davison, can swing with the best of them, but his ballads are romantic and soulful.Once you've bought this album, you're sure to want to check on his other offerings on the Arbors and Delmark labels. Better yet, if you live in the Midwest or the West, catch him at a jazz festival near you.
