When one thinks of musicals from Hollywood's golden age, the initials MGM come almost instantly to mind. Indeed when veteran song-and-dance man George M. Cohan was negotiating a film based on his colorful life story, his first choice was Metro--until a falling out with studio chief Louis B. Mayer. But L.B.'s loss eventually became Warner Brothers'--and film history's--gain when the Burbank studio's Cohan musical became a massive, patriotic hit in the opening months of World War II. As chronicled in this vibrantly restored, first-ever complete soundtrack for the film, it was a compelling twist of fate. James Cagney turns in one of the screen's most ostensibly unlikely--and ultimately indelible--musical performances (netting him his only Best Actor Oscar ®), teaming with studio music director Roy Heindorf to update Cohan's once-quaint turn-of the-century patriotic ditties ("You're a Grand Old Flag," "Over There," "Yankee Doodle Boy") and infectious vaudevillian chestnuts ("Give My Regards to Broadway," "Harrigan") with bracing dollops of the studio's '40s orchestral sass--and, just months after Pearl Harbor, some crucial historical parallels. Also included are four bonus tracks that remarkably survived the film's preproduction, including an outtake of "You Remind Me of My Mother" and voice-and-piano-only rehearsal versions of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" that further underscore Cagney's deceptively effortless ability to sell a song despite his limited musical gifts. It's a long overdue showcase for a true American film musical gem. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy Review.......2006-11-03

It's an old movie with an old soundtrack, but I loved the movie, I love the music, and I'm very happy with my purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Yankee Doodle Dandy.......2006-06-30

Excellent in black and white and color. James Cagney also got a medal from a President. (President Reagan!} If you like entertainment...this is it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Wonderful! Just buy it - you won't be sorry!.......2005-03-05

I am so very glad I bought this CD. I own the DVD of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and watch it all the time, so I almost didn't buy this, wondering if I really needed yet another CD.

Well, thank God I didn't pay any attention to that dumb idea!

If you love "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and Cagney, you just have to buy this soundtrack. It's like being able to take the movie with you anywhere ... it's not just the songs - as others have said - but also includes bits of Cagney's voice-overs, even the tap-dancing from the end of "Little Johnny Jones." And since the audio system in my car is better than my TV's, it all seemed even bigger, richer and better. (George M. would love that!)

Wonderful, wonderful stuff!

5 out of 5 stars What a find!!.......2003-06-15

I haven't been able to see this movie on TV since Turner bought it (don't get TCM), but if you've seen the movie several tims, as I have, listening to this CD is very nearly as good as watching it all the way through. (I'm so delighted with it that I'm even willing to forgive TCM for putting a paper ad inside with the disc.)

Monumental effort must have gone into this soundtrack, given the age of the original recordings. The tracks here are crisp, clear, and bright, with no evidence of how long ago they were first put down. The editors were also generous in their inclusion of dialogue that ties some of the tracks together (for example, we hear the man tell Johny Jones to watch for the skyrocket, then we hear the skyrocket as it leads into "Give My Regards to Broadway"). There are a couple of places where the endings are slightly abrupt but this is because, in the movie, the music fades into extended dialogue.

The only bit of dialogue I expected to hear in a song, but didn't, is in "Over There" near the very end of the film, when Cagney/Cohan has fallen in step with the soldiers going off to WWII, as they're singing "Over There", when the soldier nearest him says something like, "What's wrong, old timer, don't know the words?" and Cagney says, "Seems to me I do" and starts singing along. That's minor and pales next to how wonderful the rest of this soundtrack is.

One of the biggest treats on this CD is that we get to hear some of Cagney's tapping, notably in "Give My Regards to Broadway", "You're a Grand Old Flag", and - one of my favorite moments in movie history - when he dances down the White House stairs to "Yankee Doodle" near the end).

The outtake is not a humorous one, simply a track they decided not to use. It and the rehearsal tracks are all just the performers voices with piano accompaniment. I especially enjoyed hearing Cagney rehearsing "You're a Grand Old Flag".

If you like Cagney, if you like Cohan's music, if you like movies "the way they used to make them", or if you're not ashamed to get a little choked up with patriotism once in a while, you will not be disappointed in this CD!

5 out of 5 stars A Soundtrack Every American Should Own.......2002-09-23

Finally! If you own that Hollywood Soundstage abomination of the "Yankee Doodle Dandy" soundtrack you can finally pitch it. Here is the real article. Rhino (Turner Classic Movies Music) lovingly restored the music from the beloved "Yankee Doodle Dandy" motion picture starring James Cagney. This soundtrack sounds astonishing considering it's 60 years old. It's very obvious some loving care was taken in it's production for which we all should be greatful. The liner notes also are great with informative text and wonderful photos from the movie. The marvelous George M. Cohan songs gives one goosebumps and bring tears to the eyes. We all need this type of patriotic pep rally, especially in these tough times. As I've said, this soundtrack belongs in every American's home just as much as that "Grand Old Flag"! I believe there are plans to release the movie on DVD, hopefully soon.

Alabama epitomizes the term people's band. Never a critics' favorite, the quartet from Fort Payne, Alabama, presents slick, sentimental songs that unerringly catch the ear of fans yet mystify those who don't hear the appeal. This two-CD career retrospective, which presents all 41 of the group's No. 1 hits, underlines just how successful they've been. The strengths are there: Randy Owen's clear, deep, intimate vocals; the focus on accessible melodies and musical hooks; and the straightforward song sense that plainly celebrates love, family, and home with all the simplicity of homilies stitched into a framed kitchen doily. Some might argue about Alabama's artistic value, but the band's 18-year track record offers a convincing retort. --Michael McCall

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Disc #1 better than Disc #2, but this is still a great Alabama retrospective.......2007-05-02

For The Record(called Essential Alabama in its most recent incarnation) is a collection of Alabama's #1 hits. The members of Alabama(lead singer/guitarist Randy Owen, lead guitarist Jeff Cook, bass player Teddy Gentry, and drummer Mark Herndon) paid their dues for years before finally hitting it big in 1980. Indeed, Alabama made history, being the first country band to make a big splash on the music charts. I was a fan of Alabama back in the early '80s, and although this collection includes only the band's #1 songs, it still is a great record.

Disc #1 is the stronger of this record's two discs. "Tennessee River", with its awesome fiddle work, was Alabama's first #1 song back in 1980. "Mountain Music"(Alabama's signature song), "Dixieland Delight", "Take Me Down", "The Closer You Get", "Roll On", "If You're Gonna Play In Texas", "Fire In The Night", "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" and "She And I" are also great uptempo numbers. The classic ballads "Why Lady Why", "Old Flame", "Feels So Right", "Close Enough To Perfect", "Lady Down On Love", "When We Make Love", and "There's No Way" are among Alabama's best. Alabama's newer songs, the workaholic anthems "Five O'Clock 500" and "Keepin' Up" and the romantic ballad "How Do You Fall In Love", are also very good songs.

However, I don't like Disc #2 as well as Disc #1. Alabama starts off the disc well, but I think some of the band's later upbeat numbers are kind of goofy. The Southern anthems "Song Of The South" and "Southern Star", along with the traditional-sounding "High Cotton", "Jukebox In My Mind", "Down Home", and "Born Country", rank up there with Alabama's early '80s songs. However, this record's second disc also includes "I'm In A Hurry", "Hometown Honeymoon", and "She Ain't Your Ordinary Girl", which to me border on the slap-happy. To Alabama's credit, "Reckless", "Sad Lookin' Moon", and "Give Me One More Shot" are solid uptempo numbers. They're well-done and well-written. As on the first disc, Alabama also has some excellent ballads: "You've Got The Touch", "Face To Face", "If I Had You", "Forever's As Far As I Go", "Then Again", "Once Upon A Lifetime", and "In Pictures". The latter song, where the man is looking at pictures of his daughter that his ex-wife sends him, is a haunting portrait of how time gets away from us.

The guys in Alabama were country music hitmakers throughout the '80s and '90s. Although Alabama's later music wasn't as good as their early hits, they have built a solid musical legacy. For The Record is a solid collection of chart-toppers from this legendary group.

1 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2007-04-11

Is Great seeing Alabama going the Christian Music way it so neat seeing Country Artist going the way to Christian Music! I do like this Album

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to your country music collection.......2006-02-06

This CD is a great addition to anyone's country music collection.
Not only does this Cd contain 41 number one songs for the group at the time it was released but some of the new songs that were put on the album eventually also were big hits.
Whether you are a big Alabama fan or just love country music you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars gotta have a fiddle in the band.......2005-05-18

awesome bluegrass/country sound.. back when country stations played.. well, country

3 out of 5 stars A non-fan's appraisal.......2005-02-11

I like country, but I'll confess I've never really been an Alabama fan. My wife however was a big enough fan to get this collection, so I decided to give it a 2nd listen. A band that hit the top of the country charts 41 times between 1977 and 2002 must be doing something right, right?

Having given these 39 songs (2 of them of unreleased tracks so it's not really fair to critique them as harshly..the band themselves had thought they weren't up to snuff..) an honest second hearing, my opinion isn't shaken a whole lot.

There are some great spots amid the collection, notably "Tennessee River" which is probably as close as the band ever flirted with southern rock on the charts, "Mountain Music" (which ironically doesn't have very much in common with the bluegrass it celebrates, save a VERY short fiddle solo...I think the gentleman who says they edited the songs for this collection is correct.), and "If You're Gonna Play in Texas" (which tips its hats to traditional country. Again, the fiddle solo seems to have been shortchanged.) "Close Enough to Perfect" is a tender love song and "Lady Down on Love" focuses on love's end. "Closer you Get" and "Reckless" are uptempo Charmers. "In Pictures" is a look at divorce from the side of the non-custodial father. It's truly touching.

But there are 2 big problems with this much Alabama in one place:

1) It points out how little risk they took lyrically and musically. "Workmanlike" is a very apt description for their work. Over and over, you can hear how they worked a "formula" to get hits. Do one about faithful wives. Do one about being from the country and/or the South. Do one about hardworking folks.

2) You can see the downward spiral. Notice that "Reckless" and "In Pictures" are the only ones I gave high marks to on the 2nd disc. The others are 3 star material (solidly mediocre) and below.

It's not that Alabama is downright bad..it's only rarely that the material here really stinks. It's just bland..played back to back to back, it's sometimes hard to tell which is which. Sadly, Alabama's lasting contribution to country music is probably going to be as part of the "Urban Cowboy" phenomenon that blurred the lines between country and pop.

Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante's third solo album isn't far removed from a demo. Taking the idea of a solo album literally, Frusciante is responsible for everything here, playing guitar over drum machines and adding occasional keyboards to the 15 songs, à la Bill Callahan's excellent Smog. The opener "Going Inside" offers promise that To Record will be an entertaining ride thanks to Frusciante's characteristically incandescent fretwork. The project is a little one-dimensional, however, hampered as it is by Frusciante's sub-J. Mascis yelp. --Mike Pattenden

5 out of 5 stars really great album.......2006-08-07

ok firts off, Id like to say one thing. this is my favorite john frusciante album except for the one that was released only on his website, which happens to be a collection of B sides from this album ( i dont know what happened that the best stuff was the B sides, but it did). Every song on here is beautiful, especially the instrumentals, not that i dont like his voice, i LOVE it but the instrumentals are stunning!
the best songs are probably remain, ramparts, murderers, invisible movement, and in rime

I, like most people, started listening to John Frusciante because Im a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers fan. But what I found was something even more amazing than the chili peppers.
This is John's first 'clean' solo album, after battling heroin addiction for many years. And the result is a much more lyrically improved effort from his past recordings. The album is very basic, with just johns guitar and words recorded over the top of a drum machine with a little bit of bass thrown in, it sounds very much like a demo. But the quality is once again in the guitar playing, it is clear why the chili's missed him for all those years.
Standout tracks for me are Wind up Space, Remain, Fallout, Murderers and Invisible movement.
Buy this album, you wont regert it...And thanks to amazon, as Johns work is almost impossible to get in Australia.

    1 out of 5 stars I Wish I Could Return This CD.......2006-04-17

A collection of forgettable songs made unbearable by the singing. Don't buy this CD. It's uninspired music sung by someone with an unpleasant voice.

Frusciante should emulate Beck and Santana, who usually follow Zappa's good advice: "Shut up and Play Your Guitar."

I like Frusciante's guitar playing elsewhere and that's what I bought this CD for. The guitar playing here isn't very good either. The average rating of this CD of 4-stars is utterly puzzling to me. A matter of taste indeed, but what is the matter with taste is more to the point.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Solid CD from Frusciante.......2006-02-22

The first CD i listened to from John Frusciante was "Shadows Collide With People" a couple years back. I personally love that CD, but "How to Record Water For Only 10 Days" is a very good record too, even if it doesn't live up to the more recent material. John Frusciante's lyrics are very profound and abstract, which I personally enjoy the most out of good music. Above his superior guitar playing, Frusciante is a true poet. Favorite tracks: "Going Inside", "Wind Up Space", "The First Season", "Saturation."

    5 out of 5 stars TO BE.......2006-02-07

This is one of the most beautiful honest albums I have ever heard.
There is something truly magical about John Frusciante's music. Either you really get it or you dont. But do give it a try..

What a grand collection this is of the legendary Barbra Streisand, full of unreleased verisons of Barbra's classics, landmark events in her career, unreleased studio and live tracks, original demo recordings, TV appearances, never-before-released show tunes, live nightclub performances, award nights and duets with Judy Garland, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond and more. This collection is approximately 4 hours long all together, it comes with a collector's book of rare photos and a song-by-song personal commentary by Barbra. "Just For The Record" covers every song that had a important impact in Barbra's career up to the point of releasing this boxset. The collection includes Barbra's first song that she recorded at 13 years old called "You'll Never Know". It also includes live songs from her first appearances on TV shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Johnny Carson Show", "The Judy Garland Show" and many more. It also includes Barbra winning the best actress Oscar for "Funny Girl" and winning the Oscar for best song "Evergreen" which she wrote. It includes Barbra winning the 1965 Emmy for "My Name Is Barbra", Barbra singing "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" with Neil Diamond at the 1980 Grammy Awards. This collection also includes Barbra's famous songs most of them live versions like "A Sleepin' Bee", a live solo version of "Happy Days Are Here Again", a live "Cry Me A River" and many many more that Barbra is known for. Demos include "What Are Doing The Rest Of Your Life (duet with: Michel Legrand), "Evergreen", "Papa, Can You Hear Me?", "The Moon And I", "A Piece Of Sky" and even a score from "Nuts" that Barbra composed herself. This is a must, a absolutely for any Barbra fan.

This collection is a must have for any one who considers themselves a true Barbra Streisand fan.

    5 out of 5 stars Rediscovering Barbra.......2006-08-20

I am wowed by this 4-disc set. It is a wonderful career retrospective with a generous selection of songs from the 60s (2 discs), 70s, and 80s. Also comes with a beautiful booklet that illustrates the career history.

There are many songs never heard on this album that are excellent. No cast offs here, just great stuff. I particularly enjoyed the songs recorded at the Bon Soir -- you feel as if you are there. One can see why Barbra caught fire -- this great voice and a wonderful New York personality -- and an infectious giggle. She was the real deal and bursting with life. No wonder people loved her. A breath of fresh air.

My favorite disk is the 70s and the song "The Singer" which was never released. There is a duet with Burt Bacharach and some wonderful renditions of 70 classic songs.

Woven in with the music are award ceremonies and the famous line "Hello Gorgeous" when Barb accepted her oscar with Funny Girl. Even original Funny Girl performance live on stage. The kid is giving it all she's got even if her technique wasn't perfected at that point.

This is a wonderful retrospective on Streisand's record breaking career and a must have for any fan or newcomer to "The Greatest Star."

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Diva!.......2004-06-14

This box set has many surprises and good songs. A definitely must have for Barbra fans and a great introduction to new Barbra fans out there. Barb has been around for a few decades and she has kept her voice nicely without staying in the same stage. From the first song to the last of this compilation, one will understand why she is still around. She is a special entertainer with many talents. With the people who she collaberates with, one should understand she is not that difficult to work with. There are songs that may not be the best of hers but the booklet tells you why she didnt chose them for her album in the first place. She has made a good choice on songs, not too new but stuff that we have not heard of. It is not that those songs she put in this boxset is crap, it is just because they were not "right" for the albums. The historical and pictures are wonderful to look at. Barbra is simply a diva!

5 out of 5 stars Marilyn Horne scintillates.......2007-05-20

This 2-CD set includes 32 separate "cuts." Thus, it provides a perspective on the broad range of works that Marilyn Horne mastered. While some pockets of work may be given somewhat short shrift (e.g., Rossini), overall this shows off her skills nicely. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania (one of the coldest places in the nation during winter), she made her operatic debut in 1954. In liner notes copyrighted in 2003, she notes that: "Can't believe it's time for a 70th birthday celebration. . . ." And neither can I, since I recall hearing her perform at the Met (via the old Texaco opera show), and it does not seem all that long ago!

Some cuts well depict her artistry across a range of genres and composers.

The "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen" is, to be sure, an old chestnut by now, but she sings it with a rich and lustrous voice. She sings a seductive aria seductively.

"Eccomi al fine in Babilonia" is from Rossini's "Semiramide" and shows off her skills nicely. This piece shows off the range of her voice well. Her voice is very agile, as it would need to be to do Rossini justice. There are some nice runs; the cabaletta showcases her agility and allows her to display well sung ornamentation.

From Handel's "Semele," we hear "Hence, Iris, Hence Away." This is a sprightly piece that is characteristically well sung by Horne.

Handel's "Rosalinda" features a nice work for mezzos, "Dove sei amato bene?" If I hear correctly, Horne begins this with a trill in piano; there are a number of nicely executed trills in this work. This cut is smoothly and richly sung throughout.

"Addio, addio o miei sospiri" comes from "Orfeo ed Oridice" by Gluck. A sprightly paced work. Horne shows off excellent ornamentation; her coloratura technique is terrific.

From "Norma" (by Bellini) there are 4 cuts (from a longer scene), featuring collaboration with Joan Sutherland. The two singers worked well together in a number of operas, and this set of works illustrates that synergy beautifully. "Mi chiami, o Norma!" starts things off. The two voices meld extremely well together. "Deh! Con te, con te li prendi" features fine work all around. Both singers display good vocal dexterity. Horne hits one high note with a bit of harshness, but not an issue of any moment. "Mira, o Norma" is ravishing; Sutherland's and Horne's duet is absolutely wonderful. Finally, "Si, fino all'ore estreme." This is a fast paced duet, with both singers manifesting considerable vocal agility and sound coloratura technique. When they sing together, their voices almost sound "twinned."

Finally, "Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair." Horne sings this straight, without the ghastly "opera-tizing" that some singers cannot resist. Sung simply and powerfully. Her rich voice produces a very good vocal effect.

    And so on.

Although this CD does not fully represent her repertoire, it does provide a good sense of the art of Marilyn Horne and it suggests the range of her singing. For those wanting to get a sense of Horne's oeuvre, this is one recording that provides entrée to her body of work.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Voices of All!.......2006-01-29

I am not the only one who regards Marilyn Horne's voice as exceptional. During the seventies and eighties she was regarded by The New York Times Music Critic as possessing the greatest voice of our time. One only has to sample this "golden" collection to prove how right he was. Her "mezzo" handles Handel and Rossini like no other. Brava all the way (To say nothing about Dalila's famous aria!) And I must even mention her "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair". This is a two CD that is a MUST for those who appreciate the glories of the human voice (To say nothing about the warmth and spirit than accompany it.)

5 out of 5 stars Not 100% satisfied with the selections, but what artistry!.......2004-11-03

Decca's release of this career-spanning Marilyn Horne recital contains many "golden" nuggets, but isn't the absolute best representation of her artistry, in my opinion.

There was certainly plenty of material to choose from, as Horne was one of the most recorded mezzos in the twentieth century. As advertised, Madame Horne personally approved the final recital list, and the diva undoubtedly has sentimental attachment to certain selections. Furthermore, a conscious attempt was made to represent the different genres explored during her decades-spanning career. This approach, however, leaves out some truly stunning material that would have made an even stronger case on why she was such an operatic institution.

    In summary:

The first disc begins with the Habanera from Carmen. Horne was very proud of her Carmen, noting that it surpassed sales of Callas's Tosca at one point. It deserved to be included, but I don't think she was "THE" Carmen, and besides, the whole opera is so warmed-over by now, it's hard to get anyone excited about it!

From then on, we are treated to a bonanza of wonderful arie and scena. The aria from Samson et Delilah is a real gem. Horne was certainly not the most glamorous singer, but My God, the interpretation is heavenly. This is what the aria sounds like in the hands of a world-class contralto. Eccomi in Babilonia follows, and by anyone's measurement, she is the finest Arsace on record. Blessed with an extraordinary range, she is as fulminating in both the top and bottom registers. What's more, her spirited delivery magnifies the pure genius of Rossini's music. As for Cruda Sorte, "ditto," as Marilyn herself might say.

Next, we are treated to two excellent Handel arias. Iris, Hence Away gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. This was recorded in the early sixties, for inclusion in the Age of Bel Canto recital she shared with Joan Sutherland and Richard Conrad. Now, if she had recorded this a few years later, she might have drove the coloratura harder. However, at this point, the voice had a somewhat lighter quality, thus the aria isn't sung with that all-purpose "Marilyn Horne" voice we are so used to. Speaking of lightness, Dove Sei, Amato Bene will send shivers down your spine. Again, Marilyn wasn't known for her subtlety, but she proves here that she was more than capable. Just listen to the fluttering trills and fil di voce, and dare to disagree with me! One of my major complaints is it there isn't more Handel on the recital. Sure, a whole recital of Handel arias by Horne is still available, but in this best-of disc, there was room at least for Or La Tromba, the trumpet aria from Rinaldo, and a personal favorite. Also, nothing is included from Vivaldi's Orlando Il Furioso, another travesty.

The pinnacle of the first disc is Addio, I Miei Sospiri, from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice. This is Horne magified to the nth power. Where to start? A scrumptiously sung recitativo, then the aria itself, with Marilyn pulling out all the stops. The bronzed tone, perfect breath control, spectacular coloratura fireworks, superlative diction, evenness and security from top to bottom, and Marilyn's own way of generating excitement will floor you. This is bravura singing at the highest level.

After a few other selections from the French reperetoire, the disc closes with two Rossini warhorses. Again, the "ultimate" Horne best-of would have saved room for more Rossini, on the second disc. But the evidence here is ample enough to proclaim her honorific as the leading interpreter of Rossini in the last century.

The second disc is less satisfactory. The first selection, Superbo Di Me Stesso sounds like it came from an inferior source, and wasn't remastered properly. Il Segreto Per Esser Felici, from Lucrezia Borgia is fine enough, but Marilyn could have ornamented more, and that snare drum is too loud! Then, we have an extended scene from Il Trovatore. Now, Marilyn herself stated that she wasn't perfect in Verdi. As she put it, she sang Verdi by not taking "both feet" out of the bel canto waters, so that she could go on singing the roles that brought her the most fame. This is understandable, but if that's the case, then we didn't need this long scene. Perhaps she wanted to highlight her collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti, and I'm sure Decca saw this as a way to lure the casual listener. For my money, though, they should have just included Stride La Vampa, and called it a day. This would have freed up lots of room for the stuff for which she's better recognized!

Now, another extended scene, from Norma, is completely justified. Equally important to Marilyn's legacy as an individual artist is her legacy as one-half of the Sutherland/Horne duo. I don't need to write more- the music speaks for itself.

The rest of the second disc throws in a bit of verismo (Horne is unrecognizeable in Ponchielli; Simionato she's not), a bit of German lieder, and some patriotic tunes. Along with Leontyne Price, Marilyn Horne was the most conciously patriotic singer out there, and to have left out her American recordings would have been a disgrace. But, again, we are given an ample serving of it, when it could have been scaled back some to make room for her operatic triumphs.

All in all, there is enough glorious material here for any fan of the legendary Marilyn Horne, and also those who want a taste of how a superlative mezzo/contralto sounds like.

5 out of 5 stars Vive Madame Horne !.......2004-01-09

    5 out of 5 stars In my mama's eyes...........2007-03-21

In my mama's eyes I never did a wrong thing....except not putting Family Album or David Allen Coe Rides Again...or Long Haired Redneck on CD in their original recorded entirety. Come on....give us the guy's music as it was intended. All these offerings are great for the Greatest Hits bucks...but the essential, laying off the night before in Atlanta or getting run out of Boulder music that is David Allen Coe is found in his concept of an album.

4 out of 5 stars David in Tune.......2007-01-14

This is a great CD. And David is in tune on all songs. Great country music. I recommend this CD for your Country collection.

    5 out of 5 stars A Country Legend.......2006-03-10

This is the best collection of David Allan Coe's out today. Period. Anyone who is a fan of current country superstars like Gretchen Wilson and Big and Rich owes it to themselves to check out the Outlaw Country movement and this collection shows that DAC had the songwriting skills to hang with some of the better known artist of that era, many of whom Coe name-checks in "Willie, Waylon, and Me."

The songs range from THE anthemic country sing along ("You Never Even Called Me By My Name"), to beautiful balladry ("Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)"), to honkey-tonk stompers ("Long Haired Redneck"); and if you have any respect for country music at all, I defy you to listen to "The Ride" and not get goose bumps.

There are a few covers, and a couple of songs written by Coe but made famous by other performers (Tanya Tucker on the aforementioned "...Field of Stone" and Johnny Paycheck with "Take This Job and Shove It") But it only takes a few listens to feel that Coe really makes these his own.

All and all an excellent set of songs by a rather under appreciated artist. Recommended for anyone who likes Outlaw Country, Southern Rock, or anything inbetween.

4 out of 5 stars If this album is not country..........2005-11-15

Great album for the person who wants a little taste of the DAC experience.

4 out of 5 stars The Quintessential Outlaw.......2004-09-15

I first came across David Allen Coe when I started DJing country music in the early 80's. Stations I grew up listening to didn't play his stuff at all, but I found out quick who he was, and his influence on the Outlaw movement, and that as a songwriter.

This is a best-of collection, mostly the radio hits, with a few interesting extras, "Jody Like A Melody" being one. That was a B-side which he still does live (as he says in the notes).

Look for his 70's vintage albums, when he truly was a rocking outlaw, and the rare "Penitentiary Blues." This is a blues album, and it is very neat stuff.

While the consultants and Madison Avenue types have hijacked country music in favor of GQ models and cheerleaders who couldn't cut it as pop singers, there are still outlaws that do it the right way...Coe is one of the few left, along with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and a few more.

While he may look like Kid Rock's dad nowadays, the man does what he wants, how he wants and IF he wants. DAC rules!

History occurs twice, first as tragedy, later as farce--or so the adage goes. With these new versions of old classics, Merle Haggard is somewhere between defying and fulfilling that fate. Some cuts are like faded carbon copies; others, given Hag's stately quaver, have a mellow poignancy; a few, like the duets with Jewel, Brooks & Dunn, and Alabama, are simply irrelevant. But just when you're ready to dismiss such misguided revisionism, there's a refreshed, superlative version of "Pancho and Lefty" and the perfected heartbreak of "Going Where the Lonely Go." To his credit, Haggard sticks with his long-running road band, and it's hard to imagine anyone else delivering these songs with more authority, more emotional insight. Anyone, that is, save their original interpreters: Merle Haggard and the Strangers of the '60s and '70s, whose definitive work can still be heard on collections like the four-CD Down Every Road and double-disc Lonesome Fugitive. Haggard may never make records that great again, but perhaps he'll find a new, and not redundant, way to harness his timeless gifts. --Roy Kasten

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection.......2007-03-13

All of the great hits in one collaboration. His duets with Jewel are priceless and should not be missed.

1 out of 5 stars Hag, you disappoint me man.......2006-08-27

There's something wrong with a process where you (or someone you trust) believe that you can show up in a studio 30 years after the fact and fool your audience into accepting one-take counterfeits as "43 Legendary Hits."

When you recorded these hits, YOU MADE HISTORY--Your fans knew it, bought your records, and rewarded you for it.

This is an insult to your audience.

Have some self-respect. If you want to continue to make a mark, act like a real artist and do what Johnny Cash did: Give us something NEW, something FRESH, something that will knock our socks off, like "Hurt".

If you want to retire, then RETIRE ALREADY. Nobody will hold it against you, and I for one wish you the absolute best. But for gosh sakes, if this is the best scheme you can come up with, then please stay home and keep your trap shut.

    4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Ripoff.......2006-01-28

Like many others, I was fooled by this cd. About all the Haggard I'd heard was Mamma Tried and Oakie from Muskogee, so I was looking forward to exploring his work. When Mamma Tried fired up, I realized this was a remake and in a fit of rage I tossed the cd into the back of my closet. Time passed. I realized that I still hadn't heard this man's work, and that I had this cd. So I played it.

What a revelation. The man is great. He has a wonderful voice, an awesome band, great tunes and amazing lyrics. This is a wonderful cd. I am looking forward to hearing the originals, and if they are better than this, then I will be truely blessed.

    1 out of 5 stars Remakes.......2005-08-13

A few years ago, Merle Haggard sat down and remade almost all of his biggest hits in a mamoth recording session. Now all of these songs are spreading around to every cheap record company who repackages them.

Be careful, everything here is remakes.

1 out of 5 stars Re-recordings. Avoid like the plague!.......2005-06-06

I bought this CD set thinking the songs were the original recordings. I was wrong. I still respect Merle, and think he's still making wonderful contributions to real country music, but . . . he just didn't have the original strength & punch of his original recordings. It's like listening to Johnny Cash sing "Hurt," and imagining him singing Folsom Prison Blues in the same voice -- painful.

    Avoid, avoid, avoid.

5 out of 5 stars Just For Perfection.......2006-02-06

If the Streisand fan in your circle doesn't already own this slice of heaven, what are you waiting for? With 4 discs covering 96 tracks, all the hits, non-hits, and even rehearsal demos are here, some of which have never been released. The elaborate booklet alone is like buttah. If you ever wondered why Babs was named the finest female pop vocalist of the 20th century, this audio biography of song should satisfy your curiosity.

3 out of 5 stars For the die-hard fan only.......2005-01-06

This 1991 box set, the only box set by Barbra Streisand so far, skips past the traditional make-up of most artists' box sets, in which a thorough and complete anthology of the artist's biggest hits are compiled together with the usual rarities, B-sides, and demos/outtakes. Instead, Barbra personally put together a sort of scrapbook of what seems to be her favorite recording moments. To the casual fan, this may seem a bit too much, and they may want to seek out the HIGHLIGHTS CD from this set. For the die-hardfan, this is a dream come true--four discs of pure Barbra. Well...almost. Barbra skipped past her most recognizable and biggest hits in favor of rare recordings that have never seen the light of day until now. The listener is treated to an early recording of Barbra when she was 13, plus some rare live performances from her nightclub and early TV appearances. The 1960's, which some fans consider her best years, take up two discs. Although the late 70's and early 80's were Barbra's most succesful years commercially, you'd never know it. Each of those decades is spared only one disc. The 70's is mostly tracks that she recorded that never made it to any albums, plus a few home demos, movie dialogue and themes, and a rather clumsy interview with Golda Meier. The 80's focuses mostly on her Broadway comeback, and the making of YENTL and NUTS. It would have been nice to hear more of the outtakes and rare recordings from those periods (I'm sure there's some unheard disco material out there from her). Seeing that this CD was compiled mostly by Barbra herself, you can't help but think some of the inclusions are a bit self-congratulatory. There are acceptance speeches of her Oscars and Emmys (including one where Neil Diamond basically gushes over Barbra before he announces her award), and most of the televised appearances begin or end with the announcer basically telling everyone that Barbra is the hottest talent to come along since who knows when. However, you can't but help be impressed with her successful track record, and some of the career choices she made.

4 out of 5 stars a really good box set.......2004-11-15

Barbara Streisand is truly one of the Most Versatile Artists Ever. this Box set captures Her Career&showcases her Range in so many styles&different arrangements with different producers,Arrangers,etc.... but like all the truly great Artists Streisand has always had Her Musical stamp all over whatever she has released through Her Career.she was able to connect with her Music in so many areas&Yet maintain Her Idenity.

    5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT BARBRA.......2003-09-25

... I came home and stayed up all night listening to every song, and loved them, and my respect and admiration for Barbra only increased all the way to the final note. This box set is absolutely magnficent! Not only does it have all the hit songs from 1961 to 1991 that we all know, it also has out-takes and never-released songs that are just as wonderful as any other she's ever sung. The 60s, the 70s, the 80s, it's all here and much, much more. No wonder Barbra Streisand is considered to be the greatest female singer of the 20th century-- no one else even comes close. Her vocal range, her variety of songs she has sung over her career-- over 40 years now! --she is simply amazing. And here it is the year 2003 and she is still as popular as ever and is on the verge of releasing what probably will be her most acclaimed work, "The Movie Album." Keep it up, Barbra! You will be the greatest female singer of the 21st century as well!

I happened upon this CD looking for songs about fire (A Bit of Arson Never Hurt Anyone). Skeptical, I downloaded the available mp3's from their website and FELL IN LOVE.

Anna Mascorella and Martina Grbac's vocals parallel the strange and wonderful noise of the cellos, drums and upright bass that accompany them. Not quite punk -- nowhere near sweet girl sugar-pop, Matson Jones is well on their way to becoming the band every indie rock kid talks about.

Comparing this Denver quartet to any artist is almost demeaning -- but if you must: think PJ Harvey's demo tapes with Rasputina's cellos.
