Good, Strong Album.......2007-03-16
This is a 5 star album. I have heard better by other artists, but this is definitely very close to top of the line. This was by no means a poor production...the quality and music were excellent, the arrangements were good, and the vocals were exceptional. Whoever gave this album a 1 star rating obviously does not know or appreciate the blend of country/popular/and bluegrass influences intertwined with one another. I am a hard-core country music fan, and even I found these pop influences to be rather refreshing. They are quite smoothe and blend very well with the country roots and influences imposed on the songs themselves. I didn't care for the song "All the Girls I Am"...I thought it was kind of dumb and the music sounded creepy (like Halloween or something)...but the rest of the songs were okay. Whoever gave this album a 1 star seriously needs to Get a Life! That was ungrateful and rude to rate the album in a way that was unfair. Definitely a good album and well worth the money. I liked it so much I went out and bought a second one (I have two of these same albums)!
Wonderful Album.......2005-08-12
I have played this album so many times I just about have the songs memorized. It is great!
amazing music.......2005-07-29
Never owned an album like this one before, but when I saw her live I wanted it...Beautiful music, beautiful lyrics, beautiful songs. Makes me realize, I am one of those girls! kk
Pleasant. Will listen over and over!.......2005-07-13
Thanks to all of you who produced very enjoyable pieces to which we'll be able to savor over and over--wonderful selections. Another piece of art from the Kendall family. Again, thanks!
Don't need words.......2005-07-13
Words aren't needed to express the joy of listening to this CD. Just listen to the music.

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

This is the companion CD to Canada-based CMT's live-concert television special recorded in March 1999, and it features four of the most-popular female artists of 1990s contemporary country--all of whom are not coincidentally BMG labelmates. If nothing else, it's an accurate snapshot of Nashville at the turn of the century: spunky two-steppers and heart-tugging ballads of widely varying quality; an album cover full of flawlessly airbrushed women in fetching poses; and a sonic production that's usually as airbrushed as the album cover. All four women have considerable vocal talent, although Evans seems to know best how to use it. The question, as usual, comes down to the ratio of country elements to adult-contemporary pop, and even when a fiddle or steel guitar pops up, it too often seems like a contrivance. Unfortunately, the pabulum has a tendency to obscure the real meat here, which is often quite rewarding. Problem is, even the spiciest of meals is lost when it falls on deadened taste buds. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
Girls Night Out: 4 Talented Ladies.......2002-08-04
CMT Canada had a special called GIRLS NIGHT OUT which featured Martina McBride, Mindy McCready, Lorrie Morgan and Sara Evans, and this CD was the result of it. This is a pretty good sample of what each singer has to offer, 3 songs a piece from each of them. Sara Evans sings "Cryin' Game", "Almost New" and "Three Chords And The Truth", which are captivating performances in the traditional country genre, much more than her current music. Martina McBride sings "Independence Day," along with the Tammy Wynette classic "'Til I Can Make It On My Own" and the upbeat "Happy Girl", showing off her fiery vocals and spirit. Mindy McCready probably best exemplifies the rock-hybrid that is modern country music, but her "Ten Thousand Angels," followed by "Over And Over" and a nicely done version of the Linda Ronstadt classic "Long, Long Time" are well worth repeated listening. "Over and Over" shows Mindy's incredible range from her opera training she received from age 9 to age 16. Then we have the veteran in country music, Lorrie Morgan. She delivers here with "The Heart That Jack Broke," "Go Away" and "Good As I Was To You". Overall if you're a fan of country music and want an introduction to these ladies music, join the GIRLS NIGHT OUT. If you enjoy captivating performances full of emotion and range, this is your CD as well, or even if your just a hardcore fan, you'll want this CD.
~Girls Night Out~.......2001-10-25
I'm not much a music fan of country music. But this CD is good! I really enjoyed Martina McBride's music on here! She sing's good. The other girl's sang good too. My favorite songs are Cryin' Game and Indipendence Day!!!! Buy this CD, if you like Country or if you just enjoy any kind of music.
Pretty good.......2001-04-20
This is a good cd. It has 4 artists on it. I recognized Martina McBride and Sara Evans, but the other 2 I'd never heard of. Martina Mcbride, of course, was awsome. And so was Lorrie Morgan. The other two artists were OK, I didn't relly like Sara Evans' song, Three Cords and the truth. Which is strange, because I usually love Sara Evans. The other artist, Mindy McCready, didn't really have any songs that sparked my interest. But, all in all, I liked this cd.
Exceptionally Soothing.......2000-06-11
With the talents of all 4 ladies, this CD is comprising of great tune after great tune. Sara Evans has an exceptional voice and her song "Three Chords and the Truth" is just amazing. A CD recommended for all.
An excellant intoduction to Ms Evans.......1999-10-21
This is one of the better /Albums in my collection. All 4 women present good material. Ms. Evans voice has great range. Mindy's 3 songs are among her best work. Martina's Independence Day is a classic, among the best of the very best ever recorded. Lorrie's songs are good, an her Albums almost always have a least one powerful emotion driven ballad.

Product Description
"Lost Men and Angry Girls" is 'Ameri-kinda' music - traditional American music influences with strong Australian roots. Recorded primarily in Australia and produced by Mezera's trusted collaborator, Bill Chambers, the album features duets with Chambers, Nina Gerber, Karl Broadie and Australian Idol finalist Raechel Lee. With humor and compassion, Mezera chronicles the past three years spent living on the coast of Northern California exploring American people and places (Bolinas, Gainesville, Luckenbach, the Carter Fold, Virginia) whilst missing her homeland way Down Under. Also included is the only known recording of a song written by Bonnie Parker of Bonnie & Clyde ("Morphine").

i hate to rain on the parade..........2004-08-04
it hurts me to give this soundtrack the lowest rating yet, since the movie--after watching it only twice--has become so dear to me as to give _amelie_ a run for its money. david gordon greene's story of young love touched me profoundly, spoke to me in my language, but unfortunately, i can't say the same for the soundtrack. of course, it works splendidly as a soundtrack, but not so well, i think, as an album of songs. i got it mainly for the promise ring tune that plays during the credits: "say goodbye good," which is fantastically gorgeous, and the opening song, "all these vicious dogs" by will oldham, a musician i'm loving more and more the more i listen to him. in between are an odd batch of soundscapes and mellow folksy pop tunes. overall, a pleasing listen, but a couple more mellow folk-pop tunes would have done well in place of the mogwai track, which, at 7 or 8 minutes--and no melody--seriously breaks the flow.
if you liked the movie then..........2004-01-15
...you will most likely enjoy this sountrack. listening to this cd you can almost retrace the precise scenes of the movie. it evokes those same melancholy yet strangely uplifting emotions. my only disappointment with the soundtrack was the exclusion of one particular track. it's the one where paul and his mom are dressed in clown costumes and dance for the children at the hospital. unfortunately i don't know what this song is called or who it is by. it was upbeat and a little more lively, and had it been included would have made for appropriate sountrack (assuming you agree that a soundtrack a collection of songs to represent the movie it is based on). it could have helped to convey the more light-hearted parts of the film. by the way, does anyone know what this song is...?
An expression of the inexpressible.......2004-01-06
What Matthew Burns said + the excellent Explosions in the Sky song "the moon is down" was also in this movie, but didnt make the soundtrack, so download it and add it to your iPod playlist for the ST.
Perfect companion piece to a stunning film..........2003-10-02
For those who, like myself, can't get the words, images, and sounds of David Gordon Green's lovely, lyrical film "All The Real Girls" out of their heads, the soundtrack to the film is the perfect remedy. Just as Green has shown his expertise in writing and creating films, he does an equally excellent job in choosing the musical accompaniment for them. The sountrack to "All the Real Girls" is simply haunting - one, for the songs that are beautifully moving, and two, for the way that it brings to life the feel of the film. Just listen to Will Oldham's "All These Vicious Dogs" (the song that opens the film and the album) - it is stark, pure, raw, and almost creepy in the way that it sneaks beneath the listener's skin. The other songs featured in the film are equally good, especially the Creekdippers' "Cactus Wren," which is perhaps the finest song on the album. "Cactus Wren" comes at a time in the film that makes it especially effective, and it's so beautiful it almost hurts to listen to it on the CD. An additional joy of the CD comes with the songs not prominently featured in the film: Isaac Freeman's soulful "Beautiful Stars," and Pyramid's "Body On Fire." The songs vary in a way that make the album more than just a collection of indie songs for an indie film - the stylistic gap between "Beautiful Stars" and "I Wanna Dance 4U" is HUGE, but they both seem to fit under the same roof thanks to Green's visionary film. All in all, the "All The Real Girls" soundtrack accomplishes the goal of any great film companion piece - it is great in relation to the movie, and it can also stand perfectly well on its own. Whether a fan of "Girls" or not, the soundtrack is an endlessly fascinating listen. One note of caution, though: you will be moved.

Customer Reviews:
More Holes Than Swiss Cheese.......2002-11-18
It's very difficult to put out a 4 CD history of Bluegrass music and leave as many gaps as does this compendium. There's some great music here, much of which isn't Bluegrass at all, but old-time Country Music (e.g. Gid Tanner, Uncle Dave Macon, Charlie Poole, etc). But Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, and Flatt & Scruggs account for 50+ cuts. There isn't a single inclusion by Reno & Smiley, The Osborne Brothers, Jim & Jesse, The Country Gentlemen, Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Jimmy Martin, Mac Wiseman and others, however. I gave the collection two stars because the purchase price was so low as to make it worthwhile for someone starting out a collection.
What a deal.......2002-05-06
Hard to find a better deal than this one--over 100 vintage songs in a four-CD set (lasting about five hours) at a price that doesn't break the bank. The selection of songs is well conceived: a strong emphasis on the Monroe Brothers (a total of about an hour and a half, including the entire second disk, is devoted to them alone), along with well known songs by other classic bluegrass singers (such as Flatt & Scruggs, Stanley Brothers, Delmore Brothers), and a very interesting first disk containing string-band songs from the 1920's and 30's (including my personal favorite, Uncle Dave Macon's version of "Buddy Won't You Roll Down the Line," a traditional song about the Coal Creek Rebellion of 1891).
The sound quality, as mentioned in the other review, is surprisingly good; some of the oldest songs are a little grainy, but most are quite crisp. The booklet, on the other hand, is somewhat disappointing. The information is generally accurate (disregarding the typos--for example, it's "Bringing in the Georgia Mail," not "Georgia Mill"), but the notes are conceptually thin, with very little discussion of the music itself, and virtually no reference to the lyrics.
If you love bluegrass music--and it isn't for everyone--you can't miss with this set: all your favorites are here, as well as dozens of genuine old songs that you may not have heard before.
some of the best music ever made in America.......2002-02-06
The 109 cuts in this box set document the evolution of bluegrass from its roots in early 20th-Century mountain string bands. Before the set ends in 1950, Bill Monroe, followed shortly thereafter by the Stanley Brothers and Flatt & Scruggs, has formalized a genre -- it had yet to be called "bluegrass" -- from which formula, more than half a century later, performers within the genre depart at their peril. The songs (and occasional instrumentals) are well chosen, and the sound quality is cleaner and sharper than one would expect from vintage recordings, some going back to the late 1920s.
Besides the old-time string bands, Bluegrass Bonanza highlights once-popular hillbilly-brother-duet groups such as the Monroe Brothers (of course) and the Delmore Brothers as well as neglected acts like the Armstrong Twins and the Bailey Brothers. One whole disc (#2) is devoted to the Monroes together and apart. Given how hard it is to find his solo work on CD, the Charlie Monroe sides are especially welcome. If you don't love his "Bringin' in the Georgia Mail" (which sounds like a traditional folk song, though written by Nashville producer and tunesmith Fred Rose, better known for his [later] association with Hank Williams), you might put a mirror to your mouth to see if you're still breathing. Though no bluegrasser, Grandpa Jones appears on #3 and #4, evidently in recognition of his role in keeping mountain music, without which there would be no bluegrass, alive on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Curly Fox's one cut, the traditional "Come Here, Son" (#3; actually, "Fire on the Mountain"), hints at what bluegrass might have sounded like if electric guitar had not been forbidden therein at any early stage. Disc #4, except for a single Molly O'Day side (the murder ballad "Poor Ellen Smith") and Grandpa Jones's standard "Old Rattler," is all early Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and Stanleys, the last sounding a bit tentative, their sound somewhere between the Delmores and Monroe, minus the blues influence. It would be a while before Ralph and Carter found their voice, but even here their devotion to the older Appalachian traditions is palpable.
Rather than pour on the superlatives and the flattering adjectives, just let me say that this box set does its subject proud. Whether you're new or old to country string-band music, you will want this collection. This is some of the best music ever made in America.
